“A great leader is someone you can trust not necessarily to have all the answers, but to be able to find them,” he explained. “And it’s someone who will listen, who will not dismiss your concerns, who will take the time to take you seriously.” Read more.

How diverse is your club?

In Brazil, the Rotary Club of Resende-Campos Eliseos, Rio de Janeiro, has gained more female members by inviting couples to join. “It keeps our club balanced, plus members are already familiar with each other and Rotary,” says club president Renata Santos, a 30-year-old Afro-Brazilian.

Another approach to diversity enhancement is launching culturally based clubs. Don Kremer, a past governor of District 5230 (California, USA) who helped start the Rotary clubs of Fresno Latino and Monterey Korean, notes, “We have a great opportunity to develop new members while helping our communities.” Read more.

Rotaractors reach out to Rotarians

More than 60 Rotarians gathered in computer labs at a local college in Houston, Texas, USA, to learn how to set up Facebook and Twitter accounts, upload YouTube videos to their club websites, and download apps like the Club Locator to their smartphones. The workshop was taught by Rotaractors and Interactors from District 5890.

“Social and digital media are growing at an exponential rate, and for many Rotarians, it’s harder than ever to keep up with the strategies, tools, and tactics,” says Tommie Buscemi, the district’s New Generations committee chair. “Rotaractors are at that age where a lot of this valuable information is second nature to them.” Read more.

Trustees reaffirm urgent priority of polio eradication

At their March meeting, The Rotary Foundation Trustees reaffirmed that polio eradication is the urgent priority of the Foundation, and that continued support for PolioPlus is essential.

The Trustees also agreed to continue the match provided to Rotary districts for contributions to PolioPlus: US$0.50 from the Foundation’s World Fund for every $1 allocated from the District Designated Fund. The World Fund match, an incentive for districts to contribute DDF until polio eradication is certified, will be applied on a first-come, first-served basis and capped at $3.5 million annually for the next five fiscal years.

The trustee decisions underscore Rotary’s commitment to achieving a polio-free world, shared by its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Recently, Rotary also received a US$1 million contribution for polio eradication that came about because of its ongoing partnership with the Gates Foundation.

Editorial President’s Message

The theme for the month of April is Magazine Month. We are at the time of the year where we can submit working papers of projects executed previously in RY2011/12 for Presidential Citation award and Membership Development Initiatives – MDI award.

We have carried out many outstanding projects successfully throughout the year but three more prominent projects have been selected as nominees. PP Chow Tain will be heading the club’s nomination and all processes concerned; I would like to sincerely thank him for volunteering unselfishly to submit write ups for submission to these awards. The projects selected as nominee for these awards are as listed:

1. Best District Award for Club Administration Project – “Visitors’ Day”

2. Best District Award for Public Relations Project – “Visitors’ Day”

3. Membership Development Initiatives Award:- (a) Retention (b) Induction of New Members

4. Best District Award & Recognition Selection under category of Service Project and Public Relations – A Service to New Generation Project – “35th Interact Leadership Training & Motivational Camp”

5. Best District Award for Club Administration Project – Past Presidents Luncheon – “Colours of Glory”

6. Best Club Bulletin Award

We hope that these awards will help to spur the members a bit more than our usual high commitment to serve. These awards will also give future teams a certain standards of objectives to achieve. We hope that our projects nominated will receive certain commendation from RI. These awards are again a culmination of join efforts by all Rotarians of the Club consistently throughout the RY2011/12. Let us all keep up the tradition of the club and have more fellowship for the remainder part of the year with the theme of “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity” closely in our thoughts.

Dato’ Steven OonPresident RY2011-2012

GETTING NEW MEMBERS

Membership in Rotary worldwide it seems has been stagnant or worse on the decline. In the west membership has been confined to the more elderly and the younger set simply ignore the movement. It is not uncommon for some European Rotary clubs to have at least 60 years as the average membership age. The membership growth worldwide therefore comes mainly from the Asian Rotary clubs.

Why is it so? And is our club, the Pudu Rotary Club and many of the urban clubs following the western trend?

There are a number of possible reasons why younger people today are not joining the Rotary movement.

1. There are many distractions today which serve too as competitors. Development in new technology like the internet, facebook, and other IT social network has in a way displaced the traditional way of meeting people like in social clubs, religious gatherings etc.

2. Joining a Rotary club is relatively expensive for the younger people. In our club at least RM200 has to be spent every month if you are not active and much more if you are active. There is no provision to prorate subscription according to age.

3. Young people too have many obligations such as just starting a family, starting a career and other interests

4. In towns like Kuala Lumpur, getting around is not only more difficult, it is also expensive. There are traffic jams around Rotary meeting areas, like our club around the Shangri-La area during lunch and dinner time. Parking could be difficult and expensive. If one has no freedom of working time it would be difficult to come to a lunch time. Rotary meeting on time and difficult to go back to the office on time after the meeting which ends at 2 pm. So fellowship after the regular meeting is definitely out. It is the same for dinner meetings.

5. For the women it is double difficult especially if they are in family ways. Taking up office is fairly difficult especially it involves sacrifice of time.

There are many other reasons of course and some of the above reasons are also applicable to more established executive.

In other words every membership in the current Rotary clubs is important and there should be a concerted effort to retain them. Having said that, in recruitment it doesn’t mean Rotary clubs lower their standard. Quality is still important.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

Responsibility of the Individual Rotarian in International Service

Each Rotarian should make an individual contribution to the achievement of the ideal inherent in the fourth Avenue of Service. Each Rotarian should help to create a better-informed public opinion.

Rotarians should1) Look beyond national patriotism and share

responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace

2) Resist any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority

3) Seek and develop common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands

4) Defend the rule of law and order to preserve liberty of the individual so that all may enjoy freedom of thought, speech, and assembly; freedom from persecution and aggression; and freedom from want and fear

5) Support action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity elsewhere

6) Uphold the principles of justice for humankind, realizing that these are fundamental and must be worldwide

7) Strive always to promote peace between nations and be prepared to make personal sacrifices for that ideal

8) Urge and practice a spirit of understanding of every person’s beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards that, if practiced, will ensure a richer, fuller life

9) Exercise appropriate caution in conducting activities and programs where international tensions exist between countries

10 Rotarians to be honored at White House

Ten U.S. Rotarians will be honored on 20 April by the White House as Champions of Change for their volunteer work locally and internationally.

At the first ever Rotary Day at the White House, more than 160 Rotarians will attend a morning round of

community leaders briefing series. White House administration experts will speak on topics including maternal and child health, disease prevention, economic development, youth and education, water and sanitation, and peace-building.

See Rotary Day at the White House on a live video stream

The event can be followed live on the White House video stream <http://www.whitehouse.gov/live> starting at 9 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time).

Follow the Twitter chat with #atthewh

In addition, from noon to 12:45 p.m., you can follow a Twitter chat between Jon Carson (@joncarson44), White House director of public engagement, and John Hewko (@johnhewko), RI general secretary and CEO. The topic is how can you make a difference in your community and abroad. Send in your questions on the topic now and up until the start of the Twitter chat to @rotary and @joncarson44, using the hashtag #atthewh.

Rotary Day coincides with the U.S. presidential proclamation of National Volunteer Week, which is 15-21 April. Each of the Champions of Change will receive a copy of the president s proclamation. In the U.S., you also can find out more about serving through volunteering at www.serve.gov.

PP Chow Tain introduced the guest speaker for the day who was none other than Mr. V S Tan who spoke on the topic of Does The 5Cs Apply In Today’s Lending Decision By Bankers.

Brief biodata of V S Tan

V S Tan was a “salesman turned banker” before he founded his own consulting business.

Started as a salesman 20 years ago, V S has accumulated “on the ground” exposure particularly in dealing with the fundamentals of “getting business”. He was then promoting maintenance chemicals from factory to factory.

After that, he spent his next 8 years with Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank – handling both origination of deals and credit assessment & execution. Those years had allowed him to deeply understand the other core area of any business – that is “funding”. He then

saw the challenges often faced by entrepreneurs and corporations in getting their desired financing from banks. That led him to set up Vanhuey Consulting in 2004 to close the gap.

Vanhuey Consulting Asia Sdn Bhd is a firm specializing in optimizing business & project cashflow with bank funding. With a team of qualified & experienced bankers & professionals, they work with fast growing companies to get them more supportive bankers than they would find on their own. For the past 8 years, more than 20 banks have worked with Vanhuey to assist hundreds of businesses from various industries. That includes “project funding” for property developers & building contractors and “business funding” for importers & distributors as well as manufacturers & exporters.

VS has a burning desire to “live a balanced life” with happy family & business success.

His key to success is to build a “win-win & trusting” relationship with long term objectives in mind.

Professionally, V S is a Certified Credit Professional (“CCP”) accredited by IBBM – Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia and he has conducted courses on behalf of IBBM for member banks such as Maybank and Public Bank. He is a Finance & Marketing graduate from University of Stratchclyde, UK.
