  • Preface to the ThirdEditionNew technologies at the time the first edition of Color Atlas and Textof Pulmonary Pathology was published allowed us to create a uniquetextbook of digital age conciseness with all figures printed in color.Subsequently, those technologies have become widespread, but thedistinctive virtues of the original work have not been duplicated. Inthe decade since the publication of the second edition of this book,diagnosis in pulmonary pathology has undergone a number ofmodifications. New entities have been described, older entitiesredefined, and several major classifications revised: An update ofthe 2002 American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society(ATS/ERS) classification of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias waspublished in 2013; the Fifth World Symposium on PulmonaryHypertension was held in Nice, France, in 2013; the fourth editionof the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Lung,Pleura, Thymus and Heart was published in 2015. Since the secondedition, the introduction of testing for molecular targeted therapiesand other advances has forever altered the role of the pathologist inthe diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases.

    We elected to produce a third edition that is not merely anadjustment of the previous text based on new developments inpulmonary pathology, but one predominantly constructed by neweditors and largely written by new contributors. Even the title of thebook is modified to reflect this progress: Pulmonary Pathology: AnAtlas and Text, third edition. While it is a newly composed book, thegeneral format of a user-friendly atlas that is highly illustrated,divided into readily accessible individual entities, and offering brief
