Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Section Electronic Newsletter
July, 2011
Dear Section Members: Summer is in full swing so I hope each of you is able to take some time off to relax and rejuvenate! I attended the House of Delegates as our Section's Delegate in June. The minutes of the House will be available in September. You can go to the APTA website and see what RCs were brought forth before the House and the outcomes. RC 3-11 caused the greatest discussion and was about Physical Therapist Responsibility and Accountability for the Delivery of Care. After much spirited debate the RC passed. The new position will take effect July 1, 2012 and states "APTA recognizes and supports physical therapists' abilities to utilize appropriate support personnel, including but not limited to the physical therapist assistant, when directing and supervising selected aspects of physical therapy intervention." RCs 4 through 12, which deal with the model of the PT, PTA, and PT aide as the only participants involved in the delivery of PT services, were referred to the Board of Directors for further review. Any new motions will be submitted to the 2010 House of Delegates. Governance Review also was discussed at several meetings and there is general agreement that sections serve as the content experts. The section presidents met with APTA staff and Board members. Plans for CSM in Chicago are well under way. We voted to hire an external facilitator to help us develop and implement a process for a comprehensive review of CSM in part to help us face the challenges that growing attendance presents. I hope many of you will make plans to join us in Chicago and will come to our membership meeting. I wish all of you the best and as always please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions/suggestions. Best regards, Ethel Frese, PT, DPT, MHS, CCS President

DRIVE4COPD Campaign
Ellen Hillegass (Legislative/Reimbursement Chair), Bobby Belarmino, and Pam Bartlo (Public Relations Co-Chairs) have been working to form an alliance with the DRIVE4COPD
campaign.
What is the DRIVE4COPD Campaign? It is a multi-year public health initiative that aims to help people identify symptoms of COPD and
take action. It is supported by the major funding sponsor Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and has
the joint support of AARC, Country Music Association, the COPD Alliance, the COPD Foundation, NASCAR®, and the US COPD Coalition.
It is a large-scale education and awareness campaign to help bring COPD to the forefront. The goals of the campaign are to: Screen millions of people who may be at risk for COPD. Elevate COPD awareness and education to increase self-recognition of symptoms and put on par
with other major diseases. Cement COPD Population Screener as premier risk assessment tool; institutionalize in HRAs, HCP
offices & employer/community health programs. Ensure sustainable campaign backed by a network of influential organizations and campaign
ambassadors. Why should our section be involved? PTs are integral in the screening, risk management, and education regarding COPD. We are an important component of the subsequent treatment for people with COPD and we
should therefore be involved as early on as possible with this population. This campaign will allow our section to be involved with many influential organizations in the
pulmonary rehabilitation arena.

Watch Facebook, e-mails, and Oct’s e-newsletter for more information on
ways to be involved.
Any questions or comments please contact Ellen Hillegass
[email protected], Bobby Belarmino Bobbelarmino
[email protected], or Pam Bartlo [email protected].
Go to our section’s homepage and click on the DRIVE4COPD link in the left margin to go to the screening tool.
You may access the tool through the DRIVE4COPD’s website, but we are asking that you use our link as the campaign will track usage from our unit address. The more our members use that link to the tool, the more valuable that we become to the drive.
We want to be more valuable so that we may have more influence!
What CVP Section Members can do to help keep the DRIVE going? Encourage integration of the COPD Screener and educational materials into wellness
events & programs. Ask any employer partners to incorporate COPD Screener into annual HRAs Use the brief, validated COPD Population Screener™ which can help identify people age
≥35 who may be at risk COPD Population Screener™ Register for the DRIVE4COPD Screening Toolkit (available in July) to access downloadable
materials for hosting COPD risk screenings and educational materials for distribution in waiting rooms
Distribute educational resources in waiting rooms. Future Events to Participate in: DRIVE4COPD has a large scale art exhibit, called 24M, that will be touring 4 cites starting in
the fall. The exhibit will have an “opening ceremony” that the CVP Section would like area PTs to attend and be visible.
We will work with area members to find ways to incorporate our section and PT in general at the 24M cities. (New York and Dallas are the first two. We will send out more info as we receive it.)
Wear orange on Nov. 4 to show support for COPD awareness and the Great American Screen Off.
Promote Screen Off events nationwide; leverage National PT Week (Oct.), flu clinics or other screening opportunities

Section Member Profile
Kara Schworm, MSPT, PT, CCS
Kara Schworm received her BS at Springfield College
(MA) in 1997 and her Master’s of Science in Physical
Therapy in 1998.
Her initial practice was at Cape Fear Valley Medical
Center (NC), where she rotated through acute care,
rehab and outpatient settings. In 2000 she came back
to Massachusetts to Boston Medical Center where she
truly got started into the cardiopulmonary area. She
worked with individuals in acute care
cardiopulmonary settings, including post
cardiothoracic surgery, trauma and ICU. Kara says at
that time she was extremely fortunate to be mentored
by a supervisor who had her CCS.
Kara moved to Lahey Clinic Medical Center in 2005
where she is currently a Senior Physical Therapist,
working both in acute care and coordinating the
outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program. In 2007,
Kara earned her CCS, which she says is one of her
proudest professional accomplishments.
Kara has presented at a meeting of the Massachusetts
section of the AACVPR regarding musculoskeletal
impairments in individuals with cardiopulmonary
disease. She is a regular lecturer in the Lahey
education series for cardiac and pulmonary rehab
patients and also serves as a teaching assistant at
Northeastern University. Kara was a contributing
author to the 3rd
edition of the Acute Care Handbook
for Physical Therapists and is involved with the
APTA Portal project, writing about COPD. In
addition, Kara is working on a project analyzing
pulmonary rehabilitation outcomes.

Announcements and Member Information
Editorial Correction:
In the April e-newsletter there was a mistake in Komal
Deokule’s highlight. Komal has worked in several
healthcare centers in San Diego, CA not Florida as was
written. Also her teaching with the University of St.
Augustine is at the San Marcos campus in San Diego,
CA. We apologize to Komal for the error.
CVP Section Research Grant Awarded
The $5,000 section research grant for 2011
was awarded to Sandra Billinger, PT, PhD.
Her proposal entitled “Aerobic exercise,
cardiovascular regulation and metabolic efficiency during
in-patient stroke rehabilitation” has the possibility to
make an important contribution to the body of evidence
for CVP PT Practice. Congratulations to Sandra. The
section looks forward to the results of this study.
CVP Practice Examination and Intervention
Survey Results:
The CVP Practice surveys on examination and
intervention have been analyzed. Full results and
discussion of implications will be published in a journal
in the coming months. However, at this time, members
can see the results in table format on the website. Go to
www.cardiopt.org. On the top left under “News” you
will see a link to take you to the results.
Thank you to Gary Brooks, Meryl Cohen, and Pam Bartlo
for compiling and analyzing these results.
Invitation for CVP Section Members to
Join the PT in ICU Listserv
The Acute Care Section has created a listserv
devoted to PT in ICU care and they have invited
our section members to join. The expectation is
that this listserv will act as a resource for the
PTs and PTAs with an interest in the ICU. The
Acute Care Section hopes that this forum will
bring together people with this common interest,
and this group may develop into a Special
Interest Group of the Acute Care Section.
You can remain a member of the CVP section
listserv and you can still submit ICU questions
on our CVP Section listserv if you desire.
The Acute Care Section’s PT in ICU listserv is
on also yahoo. If you are interested in joining,
go to yahoo.com, click on “groups” on the
bottom left. Type in PTinICU (no spaces) and
request to join.
*Clarification that this group is administrated
through the acute care section so it may be
slightly different than the CVP Section’s
listserv.
