We are so excited about BPUMC’s upcom-

ing worship and home group focus! We

can’t wait to jump in with you! Star!ng on

Sunday, February 22 (the first Sunday of

Lent), we’ll begin a series based on Jacob

Armstrong’s The God Story. Read what

Armstrong has to say about it:

“I remember a conversaon I had with my

dad when I was eight or nine years old. We

were sing on our front porch in old wood-

en rocking chairs. It’s an interesng memory

for me because I have very few of

the front porch; it wasn’t a com-

mon place for us to spend our

me. But on this day it was just

Dad and me on the front porch. I

had been trying to find the cour-

age to tell my dad something that

I thought he would tell me was

foolish or childish. On the front

porch that day, I mustered up the

courage to tell him something that

I thought made me weird, some-

thing I would never have told my friends. I

figured he could tell me how to stop, how to

grow up.

“Dad, I feel like my life is a movie or a great

story. I pretend. A lot. I pretend that I am

the hero of my story and there are bad guys

and good guys, and I fight for the good side,

of course. Even at school or Cub Scouts or

wherever, I’m pretending it is part of my

adventure, my story, of which I am the

star.”

I didn’t tell him anything about my thoughts

of damsels in distress, or my deep fear of

the enemy. I didn’t tell him everything. I told

him a li,le and waited for him to reason

with me. I waited for him to share logic with

me to help me get out of my fairy tale. Joy in the Journey,

Bill & Kristen

Staring out into the field across from our

house, never looking at me, my dad replied,

“Yeah, me too.”

G. K. Chesterton said, “I had always felt life

first as a story: and if there is a story there is a

story-teller.” (1)

My dad’s affirmaon that day would grow

into my belief today that I am indeed a part of

a greater story. A story with good guys and

bad guys, adventure and romance, intrigue

and suspense.

I am a part of the God Story and you

are too.

It can be easy to look at the Bible as

a haphazard collecon of sixty-six

books from different eras, different

regimes, and different authors,

wri,en with different intents.

It can be equally easy to see our

fragmented lives as a haphazard

collecon of events with li,le to

nothing holding it all together. Neither one of

these vantage points is accurate.

I believe our lives change when we see the

threads that run through the great story of

God’s people found in the Bible, and when we

see our lives as a connuaon of that story.

If there is something in you that says where

you are right now is not how the story is sup-

posed to end, then you need to hear the God

Story.”

This 7-week series will take us right through

Easter, as we explore our place in God’s amaz-

ing story. We hope you’ll jump in too!

Power-Up

Last month in January the K-4th

graders learned what it

truly means to have commitment. All of the kids were

challenged to learn and memorize 1Timothy 4:8a,

“Training the body has some value. But being godly has

value in every way.” All month long we challenged the

kids to be commi8ed to God. True commitment is making

a plan and puDng it into prac!ce. OFen it is easy to make a plan but it is another thing to put

it into prac!ce.

Kindness is the key focus in the month of February and we will be focused on the key verse in

Luke 6:31, NIV “Do to others as you want them to do to you.”

MISSION & OUTREACH

"The

mission

of the

church

is missions."

Oswald J. Smith

Charlie Hodges

Coordinator of Mission & Outreach

BPUMC and Christ First UMC partnered to pre-

sent an awesome, colorful, brilliantly lighted

float for the annual downtown Christmas pa-

rade. With a candy cane theme the float cele-

brated how Jesus is depicted in the candy

cane. Candy canes with a poem explaining the

history were handed out to the crowds. Music

filled the air from the float and flyers with spe-

cial holiday prayers were also handed out. The

float was constructed by the young adult

group who meets at the Flip Side and many of

them par!cipated in the parade also. Thank

you to Phil Baker for the use of his trailer, for

pulling the float in the parade and the use of

his garage to construct the float in a warm

place. Phil and his daughter, Michele Terrill,

also spent a Saturday morning taking the float

apart. Thank you to everyone who par!cipat-

ed in this opportunity to raise Jesus up during

this !me celebra!ng His birth.

BPUMC and Christ First also teamed up to pro-

vide 550 pairs of socks to the Chautauqua

County Jail Chaplain to be handed out in the

jail as Christmas presents. The Young Adult

Group at the FLIP Side were able to wrap the

socks in a colorful ribbon and include a

“Forgiveness card” based on 2 Corinthians

5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a

new creaon; the old has gone, the new has

come.” Please watch for opportuni!es at

BPUMC in the near future to donate reading

glasses and appropriate reading material for

the chaplain to use.

The Men’s Mini Golf Tournament was held in

late January. The Child Advocacy Program re-

ceived the proceeds from this event. Thank

you to everyone who helped set up the course

throughout the church and to everyone who

helped the day of the tournament with wor-

ship, lunch, and golfing.

The Alpha Program kicked off on January 29th.

If you were not able to par!cipate that night

please see Pastor Bill or Kristen about a8end-

ing on Thursday, February 5th, and bring a

friend, rela!ve, someone you work with…

whoever might not know our Lord or who has

doubts or ques!ons….to ask ques!ons and

learn about the basics of Chris!anity.

At this !me the Hai, Mission team has 4 slots

available to go to Hai! March 29 – April 5th.

Contact Charlie Hodges or Heidi O8away as

soon as possible. Please help the team by or-

dering a sub on Sunday, January 25th, or Sun-

day, February 1, for pickup aFer worship on

February 8th. Dona!ons to the team can be

made by checks made out to BPUMC designat-

ed “Hai Mission Team.” Thank you to every-

one who pitched in for our cookie sale and

donated funds.

Strength is found in weakness. Control is found in dependency. Power is found in surrender.

HAITI SUB SALE

A delicious opportunity to help the 2015 Hai!

Mission Team is coming

soon. The team will be hold-

ing a submarine sandwich

sale and needs you to avoid mak-

ing lunch on February 8th and support this

worthwhile fundraiser. The team needs your

help raising money for traveling expenses, Bible

school supplies, and support for desperately

needy families in Hai!. Sub orders will be taken

on Sunday, January 25 and again on Sunday,

February 1. These sandwiches will be made

fresh in our kitchen to take home or eat in.

On Christmas Eve you donated $3,015 to help stop the spread of the

Ebola virus in West Africa. This money will be used by the United

Methodist Commi8ee On Relief (UMCOR) to provide supplies such as

face masks, gloves, protec!ve suits, and pop-up tents for holding

centers; training for healthcare workers and community educators;

and support for children who are Ebola survivors in Liberia, Sierra

Leone, and Cote d’Ivoire - all in the Jesus’ name.

One great thing about suppor!ng the work of

UMCOR is that nothing is taken out of our dona-

!on for overhead costs. One hundred percent of

our offering will go directly to UMCOR’s work with partners in West Africa to confront

the challenge of Ebola. Thank you for your generosity!

To learn more about UMCOR’s work, visit www.umcor.org.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING IN THE FIGHT AGAINST EBOLA!

February 18 begins our Lenten journey with an Ash Wednesday service at

7 PM in the sanctuary. Come for a quiet !me of music, prayer, and a fresh

start in your walk of faith. Those who wish will have the opportunity to

receive ashes on the forehead. Last year was an upliFing, powerful !me

together – you will be glad you came!

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

Here then I am,

far from the busy ways of men.

I sit down alone; only God is here.
