Newsletter of the Feingold Association of the United States
May 2016 www.feingold.org Vol 40, No. 5
Happy Birthday to us! This month the Feingold Association of the United States celebrates 40 years of helping.
I n October of 1977, 18 months
after FAUS was created, Dr.
Feingold addressed a standing-room-
only audience of parent volunteers.
All these years later, his words still
ring true.
He told us that pure food cannot be
legislated but that “consumer power,
along with organizations such as
ours, are what will make the differ-
ence.”
During the past year, we have seen
this prediction play out as a growing
number of huge corporations are
removing harmful chemicals and
turning their backs on GMOs.
“Changes in the food supply will
not be initiated by government or
industry.
“Changes will come as a result of
individual parents speaking out,
writing letters, and refusing to
purchase inferior products.”
Ben. F. Feingold, MD
It’s not only the food that is being
cleaned up, but as consumers learn
more about the risks of the materials
used in their containers, Big Food
will need to find safer ways to pack-
age it.
Del Monte has announced that it
will be phasing out the chemical
BPA (Bisphenol-A) in the linings of
their cans. Campbell’s and General
Mills will also be introducing safer
substitutes. This is welcome news,
but plastics are likely to continue to
pose serious problems. See page 3
of this newsletter for more details
and some steps you can take.
Feingold “kids”
doing great today! We have so many success stories
of children whose parents were told
not to expect much from them. The
experts were wrong, and children
who were not supposed to be able to
handle school now have top grades
and multiple degrees. You will meet
three of them on the following page.
Another generation of healthy, calm children
Our member grandparents tell us that Feingold is the gift that keeps on
giving as they watch their grandchildren benefit from the work done by
Dr. Feingold and countless volunteers.
“Our granddaughter just had her first birthday. She
is such a delight with a sweet, calm personality.”
“My sons continue to watch what they eat — even
the one who would have fought it back in the day.
The grandchildren are great too — the 3-year-old
granddaughter is very active, so I am grateful they
follow an organic lifestyle.”
“I have the sweetest, easy-going, happy grandson. People comment on his
happy nature. He is 8 months, and his diet is organic.”
Kori (one of our “Feingold kids” who had a dramatic success) had a little boy
last year. She followed Feingold throughout the pregnancy as well as today.
Her mom writes, “He is soooooo, calm her friend thinks she took the wrong
baby home from the hospital!”
2 Pure Facts/May 2016
We began using Feingold just a few months before McKenna started kindergarten.
She is now a freshman at the University of Wisconsin. (Go Badgers!) She graduated
3rd in her high school class while maintaining a crazy schedule practicing as many as
6 days a week as a very active competitive and performance-oriented Irish dancer.
Before Feingold, life with McKenna was rough, and even on the diet, she challenged
me regularly. But as difficult as it was, I tried to remind myself that the things about
her that made her difficult to parent as a child and young adult were all qualities that
would be admired as an adult. She was hard working (active), persistent (stubborn),
determined (strong-willed), and true to herself (headstrong) no matter what the cost.
But this is how she was able to qualify for the world championships of Irish dance,
how she maintained straight As all through high school, how she was able to get into
one of the top universities in the US, how she manages to carry on her daily life with
great integrity, and how she made us more proud than we ever imagined.
There is no doubt parenting a spirited child is a huge challenge, but let’s
take a lesson from our children and stay stubborn and persistent. If we work hard and
do this right (and do right by them) the end reward is well worth it!

In 1985, when my son was 8 months old, he suffered brain damage
from bacterial meningitis. As a result, he changed from a happy baby to
one who could not be comforted and had scream fests that lasted for
hours. With each passing year, he became more difficult to handle,
screaming, kicking and destroying whatever was in his reach.
I knew I needed help and visited a child psychologist who spent less
than twenty minutes with Tim and concluded he was just fine. He
told me I was an overly dramatic mom and I should just relax and
bake some cookies. After several more doctor visits and an MRI, I
learned he had suffered some brain damage from the meningitis. The
doctor told me I would have to put him on Ritalin if I had any hope of
him making it through high school. I refused to put him on drugs and had
nearly accepted that this is how it would always be. Then, I read a maga-
zine article about a mom whose story sounded just like mine and found
dramatic help from the Feingold Diet. I began using Feingold, added
some vitamins and taught him how to calm himself, and by the time he
started kindergarten, we finally had a good handle on his behavior.
In the early 1980s, my son Zohar was miserable and unmanageable. The doctor
prescribed Ritalin to “fix the imbalance” in his brain. Unfortunately, none of the
several medications worked well for Zohar, who had side effects ranging from
headaches and insomnia to hallucinations and Tourette Syndrome. After some
years, his neurologist took him off all medications, and two different psychiatrists
told us to “not expect much” from him. After the worst year of my life as a parent,
I learned of Dr. Ben Feingold’s work on food additives and behavior. With nothing
to lose at that point, we tried the Feingold Diet — and it worked dramatically. The
boy who was not expected to succeed now has a degree in chemistry and a degree
in engineering and is happily married with two wonderful children. He is a fine
young man who would make any parent proud.

This spring, the boy I was told had
no chance of finishing high school
without medication will be graduating
from college with a double master’s
degree — and without ever having taken
medication.

Chemicals added to plastic products have been linked with ADHD.
Plastic is found all around us, and it causes serious problems, but there are ways to minimize
exposure and damage.
What are BPA (bisphenol A)
and phthalates?
T hey are widely-used chemicals
that are added to plastics;
phthalates make plastics softer and
more flexible while BPA makes
them more durable. But plastic addi-
tives leach out and pose a threat to
humans and animals when they are
ingested or absorbed. Today, our
world is filled with plastics and their
unintended side effects. They are
found all around us — in plastic
bottles and other containers, shower
curtains, mattress covers, disposable
dinnerware, styrofoam cups, etc.
They are also found in plastics that
coat the inside of cans. These chem-
icals help to keep the color in
makeup, make lotions easier to
spread and help products retain
fragrances. This is another good
reason to avoid synthetic fragrances.
Flexible plastics widely used in hospital intensive care units
When infants were hooked up to plastic tubing and IV bags, their levels of
phthalates rose dramatically. Belgian researchers have studied the outcome of
infants who had long-term hospital stays in intensive care units and were ex-
posed to plastic tubing and other medical plastics. The researchers found that
when the children were four years old, they were much more likely than their
peers to have an ADHD diagnosis. In a recent presentation to the Endocrine
Society, Soren Verstraete, M.D. reported, “Phthalates have been banned from
children’s toys because of their potential toxic and hormone-disrupting effects,
but they are still used to soften medical devices. We found a clear match be-
tween previously hospitalized children’s long-term neurocognitive test results
and their individual exposure to the phthalate DEHP during intensive care.”
Earlier studies have shown similar
problems in children who had been
exposed to these plastic additives. A
study published in PLOS One found
that pregnant women who had high
levels of phthalates in their bodies
had children with lower IQ scores
than women with low levels. By the
time they were 7 years old, these
children’s IQ scores were 7 points
lower than their peers who had not
been exposed.
[Factor-Litvak 2014]
Until truly safe alternatives are
available, it is likely doctors will
need to continue to use such prod-
ucts to treat these fragile babies.
Plastic additives and reproductive problems
Chemicals used to make plastics softer and more pliable have been found to
be “endocrine disruptors.” This means they can play havoc with the endocrine
system — our hormones.
There are hundreds of published studies on the dangers of BPA. Among the
effects they have shown are: abnormal male reproductive systems, prostate
cancer, breast cancer, miscarriages, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian
disease, lower sperm count and reduced fertility.
These synthetic chemicals mimic
our natural hormones, resulting in
chronic inflammation, brain damage,
asthma, neurological problems, a
reduction of the neurotransmitter as
seen in Parkinson’s disease, type 2
diabetes, immune system damage,
and obesity. Numerous studies
have linked high levels of BPA with
obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
[Environ Health, May 31, 2015; JAMA,
Sept 19, 2012]
Many of the chemicals that pollute water-
ways are called “estrogen mimics” because
they behave in a way similar to the female
hormone estrogen.
Researchers in Canada found that introducing synthetic estrogen into a lake
caused remarkable changes in minnows, the tiny fish that provide food for
trout and other wildlife. The male fish began to produce eggs, and their sperm
cells were drastically reduced. After one year the fish stopped reproducing and
the minnow population was nearly wiped out. The number of trout declined
dramatically, and insects, normally kept in check by the minnows, multiplied.

Plastics, from page 3
Not so safe
Some manufacturers have replaced
BPA with similar chemicals, includ-
ing cousins that go under the initials
BPS and BPF. But the replacements
have many health issues as well, so it
may be wiser to avoid these plastics
when possible, rather than trust the
“No BPA” claim.
However, there are some plastic
additives that appear to have less
risk, although it might be too soon to
tell. These include:
PET Polyethylene Terephthalate —
bottles for water, juice and soft
drinks, peanut butter, salad dressings
and ketchup.
HDPE High Density Polyethylene —
containers for juice, water, milk,
and yogurt, cereal box liners, trash
bags and shampoo bottles.
LDPE Low Density polyethylene —
bags for fresh produce, frozen foods,
bags for bread, squeezable bottles,
linings for paper products such as
beverage cups and milk containers.
PP Polypropylene — containers for
take-out foods, yogurt containers,
some ketchup bottles, and medicine
containers.
Happily, there are many things you
can do to speed up the expulsion of
these foreign substances. Many health
professionals counsel that a diet rich in
organic foods can speed up the elimi-
nation of plastic chemicals. Probiotics,
those wonderful little critters that keep
our body humming, can be a huge help
in getting rid of them.
Fermented foods provide valuable
probiotics. These can include kefir,
sauerkraut and kimchi. Powdered pro-
biotics can be added to a high quality
yogurt to provide even more beneficial
bacteria.
4 Pure Facts/May 2016
When flexible plastics are
heated, they give off large
amounts of chemicals.
Perhaps the worst option is to heat
food in the microwave oven, in plas-
tic containers with a piece of plastic
wrap covering the food. When they
are heated, plastics leach out much
more of the chemicals. Use glass or
ceramic dishes in microwave ovens.
Don’t store plastic bottles of water,
soda, etc. in a hot place.
Consider replacing plastic drinking
bottles with stainless steel or glass.
Some glass water bottles have a
plastic covering to reduce the risk of
breaking.
Avoid canned foods when possible
since they have a plastic lining.
Canned tomato products are a big
problem because the acidity of the
tomato leaches out plastic. Tomato/
spaghetti sauce is readily available in
glass jars.
Seek out beauty products that are
made from natural ingredients —
things you can recognize like coco-
nut oil, shea butter, vitamin E and
almond oil. Plant based additives
and essential oils are generally well
tolerated, and some ancient practices
like clay beauty masks (using Ben-
tonite clay) are good options to keep
your skin radiant.
The good news about getting rid of plasticizers
A healthy adult’s liver will remove harmful chemicals, but children and those in poor health have a harder time excreting
them.
Another bad practice is putting hot
drinks in Styrofoam cups.
Consider giving up the coffee-
maker that uses plastic K cups. Some
eco-friendly options have been intro-
duced to avoid the plastic and the
landfill nightmares caused by those
cups. Ekobrew makes a stainless
steel cup, and many are discovering
the French press method.
An added bonus is that probiotics
are also helpful in ridding our bodies
of many pesticides [The Journal of
Agricultural and Food Chemistry,
May 2010]
Many health professionals advocate
foods high in fiber to help rid the body
of these toxins. Vegetables that are
high in sulfur, like broccoli, cabbage,
Brussels sprouts and kale, can activate
detoxification enzymes.
Dr. Isaac Eliaz believes that the
potent antioxidant glutathione can
help rid the body of endocrine-
disrupting chemicals.
Animal research has found that
two probiotics (Bifidobacterium
and Lactobacillus) significantly
reduced the absorption and in-
creased the excretion of BPA.
[Oishi 2008] Look for probiotics
with “live and active cultures.”

Annatto to be noted in Foodlists
In September, Pure Facts cautioned that the natural coloring annatto was causing reactions in
some of our sensitive members. Since then, we continue to receive reports from members that
they are seeing reactions to it.
A nnatto is a shrub that grows
mainly in South America, India,
East Africa, the Caribbean and the
Philippines. The coloring is extract-
ed from the coating surrounding the
seeds of the shrub. It’s a member of
the carotenoid family which include
foods like carrots, winter squash,
sweet potatoes, pumpkin, apricots
and oranges. But some foods that
are not orange, such as grapefruit
and green vegetables, are also rich
in carotenoids.
As more companies turn to
natural colorings, it is likely that
annatto will be more widely
used, especially since organic
versions are now available.
Annatto has a long history of use as
a dye for textiles, a ceremonial body
paint, and as a spice and flavoring
agent in many ethnic dishes, espe-
cially Filipino cuisine. It goes under
many names, the most common one
being achiote. It is used as a medi-
cine in some cultures to reduce acid,
kill bacteria, lower blood pressure,
and fight free radicals.
Both annatto and beta carotene are
widely used as colorings in butter
and cheese; we are not aware of
reactions to beta carotene. Natural
yellow and orange coloring can also
come from other sources, including
paprika, carrot oleoresin, paprika
oleoresin and turmeric.
Like salicylates annatto has
many health benefits, but can
cause problems for sensitive
people.
Carotenoids are known to have
cancer-fighting properties in addition
to being anti–inflammatories; and
are beneficial for the immune system
and for heart health. Some carot-
enoids are converted to vitamin A,
which is why carrots have long been
linked with good vision.
Annatto might help prevent
skin cancer
Researchers at the University of
Arizona Cancer Center have found
that when they injected mice with an
oil-soluble substance (bixin) from
the annatto plant and then exposed
them to UV radiation, the animals
were less likely to develop skin
cancer than mice that did not receive
the annatto compound. The bixin
does not kill cancer cells, but it
prevents them from forming. Unlike
sunscreen which is applied to the
skin, the bixin is used internally.
The down side of annatto
From the feedback we have received, it’s clear annatto can bring on any of
the reactions members have seen from additives and salicylates, so checking
labels for annatto and keeping a diet diary will be vital to identifying
annatto sensitivity. This might be especially challenging if it is not clearly
labeled. Annatto oil can be added to other oils without needing to be listed as
an ingredient. It can be used as a flavoring agent in pharmaceutical
products and is sometimes added to cosmetics.
One mom reported that 20 minutes after consuming annatto, her daughter
went from sweet little girl to something from The Exorcist; another described
her gentle 18-month-old boy becoming violent, repeatedly banging his head
against anything, including concrete. Others have also reported head banging
as an effect of this additive.
In Europe, annatto is listed as 160b.
Physical complaints that have
been documented in medical jour-
nals include IBS (irritable bowel
syndrome), swelling (edema), hives,
and even anaphylaxis. (Nish Annals
of Allergy 1991, Floch J. of Clinical
Gastroenterology 2009, and Mikkelsen
Arch. Toxicol. Suppl. 1978)
Foodlists will note annatto If a manufacturer indicates the
presence of annatto, it will be shown
as “(annatto)” beside the name of the
product, in the same way we now list
salicylates in pectin. This will apply
to the latest accepted products.
When you see items currently on the
Foodlist that contain annatto, please
email us at: [email protected] so we
can update them. Thank you!

Protecting those at risk for mental illness
Old-fashioned cod liver oil and other sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids could be a safe,
effective, inexpensive way to prevent many lives from being ruined.
A t-risk teens and young adults who were given omega-3 essential fatty acids
for 12 weeks were far less likely to suffer from psychosis than those
in a placebo group. What’s more, they continued to enjoy the benefits seven years
later, even though they did not continue to take the supplements!
The lead researcher was G. Paul Amminger, MD of the University of Melbourne.
He wrote, “This is the first study to show, to the best of our knowledge, that a 12-
week intervention with omega-3 PUFSs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) prevented
transition to full-threshold psychotic disorder and led to sustained symptomatic
and functional improvements in young people with an at-risk mental state for 7
years.”
Just under 10% of the participants ended up as
psychotic while the number for the placebo group was
a whopping 40%.
Most of the subjects in the treated group went on to
have full-time employment and were free of psychotic
symptoms.
Help for Depression
Scientists from the University of Amsterdam in The
Netherlands did a meta-analysis of 13 studies and
found that fatty acid supplementation was effective in
helping patients suffering from depression.
[Mocking 2016 in Translational Psychiatry]
There is growing evidence that brain inflammation is
at the root of most mental illness, and one of the
many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is reducing
inflammation.
Salmon and herring are not the only fish that are good
sources of healthy fatty acids. A little fish called
“menhaden” is not as well-known but has long been used
as a source of oil as well as a fertilizer. It is likely that
when the Narragansett Indians taught Pilgrims to plant
fish with their crops, the fish was the menhaden.
This amazing little creature helps keep oceans healthy
by filtering out huge amounts of plankton.
Causes of inflammation
Exposure to harmful chemicals in our food and environment, overuse of antibiotics that cause harm to the gut,
overuse of antacids, medications, and nutritional deficiencies all make it hard for our bodies to work as they
should. Our digestive system is designed to protect us from unwanted bacteria and viruses in our food but an
overworked gut is not able to function well, and is likely to become inflamed.
Here are some good options
to help reduce inflammation:
* Eat more food with omega-3s—
fatty fish, fish oils, algae, walnuts,
flax, avocado, whole grains, fresh
fruits and vegetables.
* Consider using some of the high
quality supplements in Stages One
and Two of your Foodlist.
* Eat fewer foods with omega-6s,
such as vegetable oils, margarine,
shortening, and partially hydrogenat-
ed oils. The diet most people in the
United States follow is unbalanced
— very high in omega-6 EFAs and
very low in omega-3s.
* Avoid synthetic food additives
and toxins in your water and the
environment when possible. Enjoy some “good mood” food.

Problems with accepted shortening - It has
come to our attention that many accepted grocery
store brand vegetable shortenings are using two
different suppliers. The manufacturer that does not
add TBHQ is Ventura Foods.
Always double check the ingredient listing and the
front of the can. If the product contains TBHQ, you
should see it listed. If you can’t find one of the
brand names that is free of TBHQ, then contact the
company and ask them where you can find the
version made by Ventura Foods. They should
have this information. While you are at it, you can
express your disappointment that there is TBHQ in
their shortening products.

America’s foodless foods
A recent study published in the British Medical Journal tracked the food
eaten by 9,000 children, teens and adults over a 24-hour period.
The researchers looked at the amount of added sugars in what they term “ultra-
processed” foods, which they found comprises nearly sixty percent of what
Americans eat.
They write, “Ultra-processed foods were defined as industrial formulations
which, besides salt, sugar, oils and fats, include substances not used in culinary
preparations, in particular additives used to imitate sensorial qualities of
minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations.” In other words
ultra-processed food is prepared by a chemist, not by a cook.
Not Things
Your body will thank you
...and so will your brain!
Eat Food
Writing in US News, K Aleisha Fetters quotes a registered dietitian, “We’re
not just talking about a small amount of processing here, these foods have been
so processed — refined, bleached, combined with lab-spun additives and then
refined again — that their chemical makeup doesn’t even resemble the whole
foods they supposedly mimic.” Ms. Fetters quotes another food professional,
nutritionist Rania Batayneh, “Their ingredient list resembles the back of a
shampoo bottle more than it does actual food.”
Ms. Batayneh also cautions against consuming reduced-fat foods which
contain lots of sugars and additives to compensate for the loss of fats, and they
do not provide the satisfaction found in food with healthy fats.
