rowing up, it was undeniable my passion was art and music. If I was not writing a new song, I was creating choreography with my
friends. Other times I would cut and recreate my mom’s clothing into something spectacular that could fit me. Of course, Mom wasn’t happy to find out her favorite skirt was now a dress that fit her eight year old.
It was easy for my parents to recognize my talents. Naturally shy, I would go on stage and become a different person. Music and art set me free, bring out the best in me, and make me happy. Running this publication and all that is behind it with an impending re-activation of my musical side, I am gratefully doing what I love!
In this issue of Pure, meet the exceptionally amazing Ooh Chic with Johnny Kelvin & La Ona and experience their connection with music. With a burst of energy, these two travel around the globe, entertaining an elite group of people and strengthening their motto: “don’t just look good, feel good.”
Doing what you love and loving what you do play a big role in your happiness, and this issue has a few more people who have chosen to follow their passions!
I am so fascinated by Peter Arndell’s good deeds; he is a young entrepreneur who believes in youth! Having got the chance to study in Switzerland at The Ecole D’Humanite, a school whose motto is “become who you are meant to be,” he now spends much of his time mentoring and inspiring the young.
Love for their country led Erika Cannegieter-Smith, Melanie Choisy and Anna Rabess - Richardson to start the new foundation Be The Change with the purpose of helping non-profit organizations and local causes get the support they need and promoting a volunteering culture. We also included two exceptional NGOs which need all possible support for the sake of the children. Get more familiar with the I Can Foundation and Smiles for Christmas.
This issue has much to love: fashion, beauty, lifestyle, entertainment. You will find something that speaks to you.
Read and enjoy!

& “Be the Change”.
e the change you wish to see in this world.”St. Maarten’s own locals, Erika Cannegieter-Smith,
Melanie Choisy and Anna Rabess - Richardson are doing
just that. Igniting a social philanthropic movement based
on the Gandhi quote above, Erika and her board at Be The
Change (BTC) are dedicated to positively improving life on
St. Maarten by way of a new “electronic membership
group,” actively encouraging the community -- from every
socio-economic background -- to contribute monies and
volunteer their time to various non-profit organizations
and local causes.
“Be The Change is a “grassroots foundation,” a middleman
for all the Non - Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on
island. One can consider it a monthly mutual fund for
charitable donations and an informative social map for all
the worthy causes we have here,” states Ms. Choisy.
What’s it all mean?Pure has learned BTC’s three objectives: First, increase
awareness for all the non-governmental organizations and
social causes on the island. Second, pool funds and goods
donated, allocate them to a monthly featured NGO and
broadcast it electronically to membership. Last, create a
philanthropic movement and promote a volunteering
culture.
Wow!The member’s newsletter and e-blast relates tangible ROI
on charitable investments by reporting how the NGOs are
doing, how your donations are assisting their cause and
how, when and where you can volunteer your time or
money in the future.
“Many organizations come up with certain incentives to
entice donations but we’re telling people it’s their national
duty to volunteer and give back. We’ve created an informa-
tive social networking platform, a place to learn how and
where their help is needed most. It’s a portal for caring!”
Be The Change chooses twelve NGOs yearly and always
welcomes more. For more information on how to Be The
Change as well, contact: [email protected] and

SMILES FOR CHRISTMAS.
hat could you do with others if you knew you couldn’t fail?Another newsworthy NGO, although not part
of Be The Change as yet, is Smiles For Christmas.
What exactly is Smiles For Christmas? SXM ladies Steph-
anie Vincent, Rita Friday, Simran Bharwani, Kantu Mirpuri
and Lilly Wathey had previously provided Christmas charity
outreach individually but realized they could pool their
energy and resources to increase their impact. They
formed Smiles For Christmas, aimed at enhancing quality
of life for St. Maarten children through Salvation Army
community outreach programs and of course, dedicated to
making Christmas a little brighter.
Amazing!“Several Salvation Army programs we raise funds for
include The Christmas Outreach Program, The After
School Program, The Soup Kitchen Program and the Meals
on Wheels Program,” states founding member Simran
Bharwani.
“An enormous challenge is many people think the Salvation
Army is an international organization where funding for
local projects is covered. Unfortunately, St. Maarten is
considered a wealthy country and consequently instructed
to raise funds locally,” she continued.
It became obvious to Smiles For Christmas that Salvation
Army Captain Jonas and his wife Laura needed to fund the
2012 Christmas Party. So they birthed Couture For Charity.
Pure Magazine joined Smiles For Christmas on June 2,
2012 for Couture For Charity, a memorable evening of tea
party fashion at the Westin Resort Hotel in Oyster Bay
sponsored by Pure Media Group, Revlon and Q104.3.
Spotted supporting that evening were local celebrities like
Miguel Alexander, Susha Hein, Indhira Marlin, Brenda
Wathey, Chet Euton, and Samantha Georges-Jacobs, as well
as the Hon. Prime Minister Sarah Wescott Williams -- all
enjoying the fashion of designer Roshny Mahbubani and her
breathtaking handmade embroidered Fusion Indian wear.
“Couture for Charity was a great success and exceeded
financial expectations! With over 250 in attendance, we
were even able to use some excess funds to purchase
backpacks and school supplies for 50 children in need!”
declared Simran.
Christmas day 2012, The Salvation Army welcomed over 350
children, young adults and volunteers from the Learning

Unlimited School who spend their time each year wrapping
Christmas presents individually. Hot food, fun, games and
a visit from Santa added to this year’s joy of being a child
around the holidays, thanks to Smiles For Christmas and
The Salvation Army.

The I Can Foundation of St. Maarten.
inally we report on the ‘I Can’ Founda-tion of St. Maarten, one of Be The Change’s
initial 12 NGO’s. The ‘I Can’ Foundation of SXM is a
most sensational and awe-inspiring group of individuals
working toward change and social commitment here on St.
Maarten. Establishing a foster home in 1996, ‘I Can’ has
since sheltered over 30 children, even providing refuge for
kids from neighboring islands.
Pure Magazine learned that President Cassandra Gibbs,
along with her crew Macario Giterson, Maria Alexis, Lester
De Graff, Ronald Pinard, Calvin Turner and Lydia Lake
have as their objectives fostering strong and capable young
adults, assisting families and parents in critical situations
and equipping children through life-long educational
programs that strengthen social development.
“We’re a foster home offering a real home to children,
victims of neglect, abuse or other social issues, where they
receive full time care, treatment, guidance and through
house life, we work to prepare them for the future,” reveals
Cassandra.
A most heartfelt and inspiring story! Generous benevolent
people have stepped in to fill the needs of the community
and work closely with The Family Guardian Supervisory
Foundation, The Court of Guardianship, local schools,
parents and guardians. ‘I Can’ is literally raising children
into well-rounded adults.
Incredible!“All community resources are utilized to ensure everyone
receives proper counseling, medical treatment, recreation
and individualized scholastic programs,” affirms Ms. Gibbs.
So imagine having (and housing!) 30 children: It takes
home improvement, maintenance, landscaping,
playgrounds, toys, school uniforms, utilities, personal care
and so much more. Sounds expensive. It also sounds like a
most worthwhile cause to volunteer your time, spare
supplies, or anything else.
Inquires contact +1.721.547.7013 or find them at
www.i-canfoundation.org or of course, you can always join Be
The Change and automatically donate to I Can and more!

arely does the word PURE describe the true essence of a person. A gentleman and a gentle man, young, hot, refined,
smooth, shy and sexy, Peter Arndell illustrates our definition of the purest of men on SXM!
“Quite flattering, I’d never view myself as any of that but thank
you nevertheless,” began Peter when read his intro.
Who is Peter Arndell?A young, aspiring and inspiring entrepreneur leading a community of youth island-wide through mentoring, educa-tion and love of his own passion, board sports. Local owner and operator of Rebl 7 Surf shop in Simpson Bay (art gallery, bar, tattoo parlor, community center, et al,)tourism and hospi-tality master, volunteer and teacher -- what an example!
With a Swiss mom and SXM dad by way of Aruba, Peter was born locally and a St. Dominick kid until age 15 but jumped at an opportunity to study in his mom’s homeland at The Ecole D‘Humanite -- a school with the motto, “Become who you are meant to be.”
“If you had talent or passion, they pushed you to nurture and foster it. I became completely enveloped in snowboarding. The school was right on the slopes and we had a mandatory three hour class weekly!” With an enormous love for board-ing, Peter remained years afterward to teach colleagues and underclassmen in Hasliberg and St. Moritz, Switzerland.
“Woodworking, silversmithing, rock and ice climbing; educa-tion doesn’t only take place inside the classroom. There’s more to life, more to you,” says Peter of his schooling. “We couldn’t go to clubs, smoke or drink alcohol. I starred in musicals and took Shakespeare. We were told to make our

own music and act in our own plays.”
Continuing at The Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality
in CHUR (East Switzerland,) Peter says, “It was quite an
experience, you can’t learn higher customer service and
hospitality skills, which included a year-long apprenticeship
at a 5-star hotel on Lake Zurich, learning the hotel and
hospitality industries from bottom to top.”
Returning in 2009, he continues here what he did there,
coaching others on passions -- but this time it’s surfing. He
teaches and volunteers for youth development programs
and instructs tourism and hospitality in hotels. An educator
and a natural mentor, the kids here seem to gravitate
toward him. A board sports Captain? An island Pied Piper?
Q: Tell us about the concept of your store Rebl 7.
A: I sell unique brands (Sullen, DGK, Matix, Aldum, Santa
Cruise, Bodyboards, Pride.) We’re the only Exile skin
board dealer on the island. I love sports and fun but what I
predominantly care about is the “intrinsic motivation”
board sports give to kids. Practiced with a minimum
investment, you can be creative, progress in your own
fashion, express how you feel to the world - it’s your
canvass, something I learned from snowboarding
yet not represented enough here.
Many kids are held down by their own mental
chains. They think they can’t do things
because of their race. I didn’t believe
in any of that. If I’d thought that way
in Switzerland I’d never have done
anything, never travelled the
world.
Q: “Intrinsic motivation”
through surfing?
A: I don’t teach surfing, I align
variables so it’s only natural
the kids have opportuni-
ties to get on the boards.
I provide opportunities.
The world is a place
to fuel passions.
What doors are open for youth? There are no closed doors
at Rebel 7. I teach skills and how to jump out of comfort
zones. With the right key, anyone can surf any wave or open
any door. I love staying on the water, always another wave,
another door. That’s how I stay positive.
Q: The future of land and water sports initiatives?
A: Sports is the perfect unity tool, yet we need to show
justification for fixing and expanding existing centers. The
more island-wide youth there are integrating their
passions, the higher the likelihood of future competitions
on international stages. That breeds sustainability, where
everyone benefits from every move. A more sustainable
tourism industry should incorporate everyone in our
growing nation. A perfect heavy interaction platform
between locals, tourist and businesses, combined with 37
beaches -- one can see the possibilities and island from
multiple perspectives. Surrounded by water with untold
possibilities, experience it on top of or under-
neath its waves.
As an organic progression to his projects,
Peters developed an apprenticeship.
“Everyone knows how to fill respective
duties within the shop and community.
Why not learn sales, inventory, repair,
maintenance? It prohibits kids falling
through the cracks, which I’m not
going to let happen. Everyone
benefits; no one just tags
along”.
With a honeyed, Bob Marley-
esque glow, Peter shoots me
a smooth glance from above
his shades. He radiates
when speaking of the
passion, promise and
future of the next
wave, the next open
door -- both for
him and his
collective.

hey used to throw us out three times a weekend just to recharge admission to the various parties. We’d fall sleep on the
enormous speakers because the bass was so loud. Infamous NYC dance denizens like Club Shelter, Save the Robots and Sound Factory kept us frenzied for days at a time.
Twenty-some years later... A glamorous 2012 Fall afternoon White Party at new Panlaan Restaurant in Cole Bay. With a few mic taps, my trained ear discerns familiarity; my heart races. Quickly I scramble to question the host about the live entertainment. There’s no other way to describe it: Ooh my Lord. OohChic!
Immediately whisked back to age 17, I’m up on the dance floor, swirling to the love emanating from the decks. Who and what is OohChic? Like hot butter melting into my nooks and crannies of a house muffin soul -- OohChic is DJ Diva La-Ona & Vocalist DJ Johnny Kelvin, internationally acclaimed superstars and live entertainment masters! “A PURE form of entertainment,” OohChic’s “don’t just look good, feel good” motto echoes the experi-ence created by their spectacular live acts that literally reach out to the passion of the audience during electrified performances. “Enthralling parties streaming with surges of energy created; let yourself go, enjoy the moment and release the mind of all.”
How has something this cool stayed so quiet? Does SXM even know about these parties with orgasmic feeling and emotion? Johnny and Ona have picked SXM for their home, choosing to travel worldwide with their entertain-ment firm. Only now (fortunately for us) have they been coaxed out of their most private shells and studio time to perform live for us at limited island-wide locales, sharing their talents locally at venues such as their Le Shore White Party (first Saturday of every month,) New Years Eve, St. Barts, etc... What makes an OohChic event so unique
and unsurpassed? They aim to inspire through music, fashion, entertainment and styling while sharing music, a positive energy and atmosphere geared toward making people feel welcome, special and appreciated. Additionally, Ona’s love of House music inconceivably outshines my own. Preposterous!
“We cross over, reaching a wide range of audiences, accessi-ble to all types of music lovers.” The core of the show is main act DJ Johnny Kelvin singing live while mixing uplift-ing dance and house music. With his six octave vocal range, he creates live mash-ups singing soul, R&B or even opera. “Depending on the event, venue and crowd, we utilize different types of live entertainment: rhythmic percussions, funky saxophones, acrobatic dancers, gospel choir or even a 28 piece orchestra. We love islands Bali and Ibiza for their

beats. We organize fashion shows, club parties, film festivals, corporate events, unplugged sessions. “We create different climaxes during our show. Johnny may cut the beat, blacken the room and sing ‘Nessun Dorma.’ Some audience members have been known to even cry at that moment! The show goes beyond what we know about DJ-ism, It’s a spectacle with highlights!”
Johnny and Ona write and compose music for themselves and other artists for OohChic’s own production company. They score commercials, design tracks and draft corporate identities for business, where Johnny picked up his love for a good whiskey and signature trademark fine cigar rituals, “a terrific bridge to the corporate world.”
The love of rituals - a good whiskey, a fine cigar, looking good, preparing for the evening - defines the OohChic
motto: “Don’t just look good, feel good! Looking good is the ritual of preparing for the night. Our party guests dress up and do their makeup. It’s part of the foreplay. The ritual of looking good provides the energy for the party. It’s very important for us: a woman in high heels has a certain proudness in her femininity, which makes a huge differ-ence in how she experiences her night,” coos Ona. Who are these crazy musical cats? From a small family on Aruba, six-octave range mid-soprano Johnny moved to Holland to study opera and modern jazz, only to meet Ona, a marketing major and professional House music DJ from Haarlem. A quick trip to do a show in Aruba; they spontaneously decided to marry. When I tell you Johnny is fervent and fanatical about Ona and he uncompromisingly drinks her ‘Kool-aid’ it’s an

understatement. “I’ve never been so possessed by a woman, the only woman I’ve never been afraid of or ran away from. I don’t love anything as much as Ona; she tames me in a beautiful way.” “I’m a fool for her. We have a higher frequency together; it’s a great relationship. Only music comes close to this frequency,” Kelvin describes the ‘frequency’ of his relation-ship with Ona, as well as his relationship with music. “We become better as we grow, as men, in music, the energy you exert is correlative to your frequency level. Compromise is from the head but accepting is from the heart.”
So what’s OohNext? Busy in the USA and St. Barts, performances, club events, publishing music and looking to create the ‘new norm’ on St. Maarten, improving the entertainment lifestyle here. “No matter what age group, the OohChic loyal target knows what music can do for them. Dedicated fans are our best promotional tools. (Uhhh… like me?) We don’t need to publicize or market our product too much; social media and our websites put us in a luxurious position, and displaying what we do transcends to our faithful devoted crowd who spread the word.
“We look to stimulate people, generate awareness and a
more romantic zone for quality entertainment, to use music as spiritual guidance. We create a passionate musical bubble to find new ways to get people to let themselves go, to lose themselves in the romance of discovery of self and setting. Music can be foreplay, the longer the foreplay, the stronger and higher the climax!” Back in the early 90s; DJs were rock stars who toyed with our emotions through music like foreplay, amping us up only to drop us off the next cliff, time after time. And of course, no one ever asked us for ID. We danced all night long. We were young, free and all we wanted was the music. Finally, we’ve got the music! A fierce performance to attend! It’s been all too long since we’ve felt the journey, experienced the climax or been part of an organic worth-while entertainment extravaganza. (Rapture me in the passion of the dance floor, please!) I’ll be seeing you at the next OohChic event, not to be missed!

Z Rock Gym, a gym for everyone!
Virginie’s Tip: “Combining Pilates with a healthy diet helps you achieve the lean and long body you’ve always dreamed about!”
The Party Way, Zumba!
If you’re ready to dance yourself into shape then Zumba is for you. A Latin inspired
veryone wants to be fit but what exactly does it take? Different body types and genetics mean we face very different and specific individual challenges. Virginie and her trainers at The Z Rock Gym in Cupecoy understand the
secrets, tailoring specific activities to keep you pumped and challenged!EThe Iron Way, Machines & Weights!
If you’re the type who likes to lift, weight training is perfect for building muscle mass, toning or definition -- depending on how heavy the lifting. Z-rock’s instructors recommend ‘‘Supersets,’’ 3 times a week; a faster way of building muscle in less time! Super-sets allow you to overload muscle without using heavy weights and with limited rest in between sets, adding intensity to your workouts.
Virginie’s tip: On opposite days jump on the cardio equipment -- ellipticals, treadmills and stationary bikes to burn calories, build cardiovascular performance and help with fat weight loss.
The Stretchy Way, Yoga!
If you’re looking to increase physicalities like strength, balance, flexibility and breathing then Yoga is the safe and effective way for you! Align your body and soul with Z-Rock’s qualified Yoga instruc-tors who guide you carefully through each pose.
Virginie’s Tip: She suggests regular practice; easing stress by involving breathing movements and meditation.
The Sweaty Way, Spinning!
If you are looking for a low-impact workout to shed stubborn fat and have fun at the same time -- Spinning is for you! An easy way to get fit rapidly, Spinning can be an intense and challenging cardio workout, achieving more fat-burning and lean muscles in no time. Higher rates of exercise burn more calories, utilizing music helps you sweat more and boost your metabolism -- up to 24 hours or more.
Virginie’s Tip: The key to a good spin class is changing tempo and pace by climbing and sprinting short intervals with a few seconds of recovery in between. Take Spinning to the next level with Z-Rock’s personal Spinning trainers who mix up the routine with surprises to maximize results!
The Strengthening Way, Pilates!
If you like a strong and solid core for strength and posture, Pilates is the conditioning for you! Z-Rock’s certified Pilates instructors say, “It’s all about the posture!” Poor posture comes from a weak core, causing shoulders to roll forward, lending to an appearance of looking significantly shorter. Pilates helps improve balance, flexibility and posture by developing your core abdominal strength.
exhilarating “fitness party,” Zumba doubles as an addictive calorie burning workout! People of all ages and shapes dance to easy choreo-graphed moves to Salsa and Merengue rhythms with the outstanding Z-Rock Zumba instructor.
Virginie’s Tip: Come and dance your calories away and have a blast at the same time. Regular classes can become habit forming!
The Whoopass Way,
Kick Boxing & Aikido!
Z-Rock’s certified MMA Instructor motivates you into shape with a different cardio approach. A combination of Martial Arts and cardio, a Kickbox-ing workout is a total body workout. Aikido, a modern Martial Art, teaches aggression control without inflicting injuries. Z-Rock’s AIKIDO master teaches techniques of holding, throwing and utilizing opponent’s motion to gain momentum.
Virginie’s Tip: With weekly adult and kids classes, come put on your gloves and get ripped with us, consistency is key!
You provide the determination and discipline, Z-Rock’s instructor team supplies the strategy -- “proper form and attention;” detailing exact movements to prevent injury within all exercise platforms. From personal tours and training to attention and answers, Z-Rock knows service and is ready to help you reach your goals!

ith elegance and style, our warm, hazy afternoons turn into hot, sultry evenings with long, lazy
island-style lounging, dining, cocktailing; nothing says romance, luxury (and money!) more than our all-day culinary love affair... Take a long French lunch!
Whether you live here or visit often, you know exactly what
we mean. Let’s go lounge and lunch! Can you (barely)
remember those lunches you never return to work from?
Pure (re)visits some of my favorite spots spanning decades,
gastro-chic eateries to sit back, uncoil, unbutton, be seen,
be fabulous and of course, uncork several bottles of our
favorite Rose! How many hours can you spend at a long
French lunch? Pure finds out!
I come from a family of sailors. Sailors who love to eat. (Does your family plan lunch at breakfast
and dinner at lunch?) Adventurers who sailed and ate their
way through Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia,
Grenadines, Antigua, the BVIs and of course, SXM. We
always came back to St. Maarten / St. Martin.
Windward or Leeward, we unfailingly returned to Marigot
year after year; were let loose on the quaint French village
at a fledgling age; danced in the clubs, shopped in the
markets, drank fresh coconut water at the Coconut Hut;
ran amuck in Marina Royal; the West Indies Mall was just a
shell of a construction site...
The first and fondest memory... Four - plus hour
long cuisine-du-France’ at the formidable La Vie En Rose,
at that time directly situated on the waterfront. As I was
forced to kiddie-lap the table for endless droning hours of
bottle after bottle, course after course, my parents
introduced me to their level of patience and fortitude.
Now with parents who sail, one might force themselves into
signing on for the necessary “seven years before the mast”
as well. Working on boats for several years, you can become
a seasoned crew diner at swanky St. Barts, Gustavia Harbor
cafes like Le Repair and L’Oblige, sacrificing monetary

W
offerings to the culinary French gods. “Pizza for five with
two bottles of wine = 300 Euro. What happened?”
What about endless hours spent eating fresh-grilled
snapper and lobster on Sandy Island, off stunning Anguilla,
surrounded by warm, sparkling, crystalline turquoise and
azure hues while sifting the softest pink sand through our
toes and drinking icy frozen adult libations and concoc-
tions? Can we stay overnight? Forever? (We may have to.)
Where’s the romance you ask? How about day
trips on our friend’s boat to Yellow Beach on Pinel, spent
basking in the sun and waist-high, bath-temp waters with
our floating beer cooler? The grilled langoustines, coupled
with the coldest Rose, turned every meal we ever had there
into a romantic swirl of dance, sex, heat, passion… I could
go on if you like.
Unable to forget our old Bamboo Bernie’s -- before the
permanent move (removal) so graciously assisted by host
Hurricane Omar? We sat eating fresh huge sushi platters
while salty waves crashed on top of our thatched cabanas,
laughing about it deep into the evenings. Sakified!
Grand Case. Stop right there. We can’t ever pass
by our favorite budget “Rib Shack,” where fresh snapper
grilled with the most outrageous garlic sauce devoured --
while we people/boat/sun/wave/Speedo-watch. We can sit
there and pick at it for hours -- or at least until way after
sunset, when they kicked us out.
Yet not one of us can get through a Grand Case long french
lunch locale debate without considering Blue Martini
Bistro; hours in the tropical courtyard garden bustling with
French-Creole spirit and flare. At the bar we find Leffe
Blonde on tap (tap beer? Yes!), together with a luxurious
and extensive wine list: champagnes, reds, rosés and whites
by glass or bottle. So French. Oui love it!
The true soul of the long French lunch lies in the Orient.
You may be able to tell this segment of the story with
thousands of your own, but my moment of devotion began
with a cobalt blue bottle shaped like a monkey. You gotta
love the French, always dishing out the after-meal shots!
Sun beach, La playa, Waikiki, Kontiki, Bikini. We can go for
miles and miles and miles.
The epitome? The penultimate? My highest rated long french lunch in SXM? We consistently
try to challenge the zip wires or perhaps a hike to the top of
Pic Paradise today? Yeah, right! Impossible to pass the
eco-pool grounds with chair side tapas / drink service. Let
the boys hit the “no fly zone” today; the girls have the
afternoon all mapped out. Our ‘eco-mountain orienteering
exam’ this afternoon consists of hikes from pool to
wine-chiller stand lounge-side! The favorite rose here? We
call it the “Blue Magic.” You call it “Clos Belise.”
So is food the spice of life on this island for you and me? Or
alternatively, is the spice of life on our island the food? We
challenge you to find out for yourselves. Where was your
last long French lunch and why isn’t it today?
While you’re reading this, in fact...
