Rabbi Baruch HaLevi
AIPAC
Dear Friends,
In times like these we must remain true to our core values. We must cling to our fundamental principle of strength through community by supporting Israel. This coming March, our congregation has a unique opportunity to do just that at the 2015 AIPAC Policy Conference, March 1-3, in Washington, D.C.
We have a chance to collectively stand with Israel in its trying hour—not as divided entities, but as a unified body. AIPAC is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, America’s pro-Israel lobby. AIPAC is bipartisan, and works with Congress and the administration to ensure that our country continues to stand with Israel. This annual gathering is a one-of-a-kind experience, and the largest gathering of pro-Israel advocates in the United States.
Our congregation has the chance to join the larger pro-Israel community to listen to presidents and prime ministers, diplomats and scholars, leading journalists and top thinkers. And on the last day, we will bring our collective passion to Capitol Hill to lobby our members of Congress face-to-face.
Together, we have the opportunity to join the pro-Israel community as one unified body, with one strong voice. I hope you will join me and the rest of our congregational family in Washington, D.C., to help keep Israel safe.
Please call the AIPAC office at 617-399-2552 to learn more about this year’s trip to our nation’s capital and to register for the AIPAC Policy Conference. For more information, register online, and to get a sense of what to expect at the conference, please visit www.aipac.org/PC.
L’shalom,
Rabbi B

Shabbat Olam/Tu B’Shevat
One of my most vivid memories of synagogue as a child, was when I would turn to my father to find him snoring. Needless to say, my father did not have narcolepsy or any kind of disorder that caused him to randomly fall asleep.
He, like many others in the congregation, was simply... bored.
Flash forward several years, and I have an entirely different experience. I am living in Jerusalem as a first-year cantorial student and I attend services on Friday night, at various minyanim in the area: "The Carlebach Minyan” (hippie-Orthodox), “Yakar” (neo-Chassidic, liberal Modern Orthodox), "Shira Hadasha” (Carlebach-style, Modern Orthodox), Ades (Syrian), The Italian Synagogue (Italian), and in each of these very different minyanim, people are singing, they are swaying, sometimes dancing; they are having a spiritual experience.
For a year, I attended these services: inspired, in love with my religion, and wondering: how can I possibly re-create this energy as a cantor?
During the next few years as a cantorial student in NYC, I attended services at "B’nei Jeshurun” (liberal world-music style service with professional musical ensemble), “Hadar" (traditional egalitarian, no instruments, but people sing passionately and with abandon), and “Kol Zimrah” (non-professionally led mixture of the above two services, always followed by potluck dinner). These Friday night experiences, and many others, were life-altering, and taught me how to use music to create a prayerful atmosphere for many types of people.
And that brings me to Shabbat Olam. When I arrived at Shirat Hayam, and Rabbi B introduced his idea of creating something called "Shabbat Olam,” I instantly knew what it should look and sound like, and I was ready to create it. I hired three of the best classically trained, improvizing musicians in Boston and I designed a service that brings out the sounds of Shabbat around the world. For these three musicians, Shabbat Olam is a spiritual experience and a connection to sacred music, not simply a gig.
At Shabbat Olam, we gather as a community, often over 150 people let themselves be enveloped by the music and transported to the local musical traditions of a chosen place somewhere around the world. Whether we learn a new melody of lecha dodi from Cameroon, sing along to a bossa nova-inspired lechu neranena representing the Jews of Barbados, or hold our breath to the sound of the lingering melody from a Turkish flute, we sing, pray and meditate together. Finally, the Middle Eastern percussion transports us to another time and place, often a place of singing and dancing.
Afterwards, we gather together in the social hall for dinner, and conversation, community and laughter.
Every time I lead a Shabbat Olam service, I look around at the congregation. And not a single person, not even my father, is snoring.
Hope to see you on February 6th for Shabbat Olam/Tu B’Shevat!

February is here and with it brings lots of new learning fun for the children in our Preschool! This includes learning about the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, while we all read stories about trees, create tree projects, and sing, sing, sing about the important roles trees have in all our lives. Stop by to view the children’s tree creations!
Our children and teachers are looking forward to Pajama Day on Friday, February 13. This will be a LUCKY day for the Preschool as it will find the children and teachers cozy and ready to learn as we are all dressed in our PJs. What a fun way to celebrate Shabbat, too! This day will also be the culmination of our school-wide collection of new pajamas for children in need. Thanks to Cheryl Schwartz for organizing this for Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization that provides homeless and low-income children with the essentials they require to thrive - to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued.
February is also the month when we open our Preschool registration to the public. Please contact me for information about our Infant, Toddler, Preschool, PlayCare (daycare), and Summer programs. We offer many options for children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years of age, beginning at 7:30 am until 6:00 pm, 5 days a week, 51 loving weeks a year!
We thank all our Preschool and Congregation families and friends for contributing to Shirat Hayam Preschool’s annual fundraiser at Uno’s last month. We know it was quite a TASTY way to show your support!

It is hard to believe that 6 months of the school year is already gone! The days have flown by, and each one of them is packed with discovery and understanding.
PK/K/1 students have been: learning the alef-bet; studying each holiday and Shabbat; participating in community T’Filah (prayer); reading and hearing about some of our bible heroes; seeing what makes a synagogue. The children hear stories each week, and have done some adorable craft activities. They sing and dance, enjoy a snack together, and leave us with a smile and a desire to return the following week.
Grades 2-5 are totally engaged in learning the Friday night service. They will be “showing off” to the CJE and CSH community on Friday evening, March 13. Wait until you hear their “L’cha Dodi” - - it is beautiful! They also: study bible; learn what it means to be a respected member of a Jewish community; listen to the adventures of Rabbi Rocketpower; and realize what it means to be a friend through the story of Emil and Karl. For 5 hours each week, these students are immersed in Judaism.
Grades 6 and 7 have embarked on a journey to find their roots. The program “My Family Story” is a project that is offered by the Beit Hatfutsot, the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel. For the next 6 weeks, the students will be learning about their family history and delve into the past of the Jewish people, thereby creating a connection between the two. We are indeed fortunate to have this program, and, if the first week was any indication, the students are hooked!
Please come by and watch us in action!

A Jewish Parenting Class for Everyone Parenting Through a Jewish Lens (PTJL) is a parenting program that explores core values through Jewish texts and wisdom. The class touches on numerous parenting issues, including how to incorporate daily rituals, how to parent during a loss, how to approach tzedakah or charity as a family, how to connect to a larger Jewish community, and so much more. PTJL will be coming to the North Shore in April, 2015.
Taught by knowledgeable, creative and skilled instructors, PTJL reaches a diverse background of participants ranging from Orthodox, Conservative or Reform to Jewish by choice and those of other faiths. The instructors are skilled at getting to know the participants on a personal level and tailoring lessons to meet their needs and concerns. As one parent stated, “Our instructor brings to each session incredible depth of knowledge, broad-minded perspectives, thoughtfulness, and experience as a parent.”
Parenting Through a Jewish Lens is a joint program of Hebrew College and Combined Jewish Philanthropies’ Commission on Jewish Life and Learning.
Classes are held throughout the Greater Boston area and the North Shore. For a complete listing of sites, times and instructors, or to register, visit: www.hebrewcollege.edu/parenting.
“PTJL has created a place for me to think through critical matters that get lost in the day-to-day. It has opened conversations between me and my spouse, and has given me access to ideas and texts I hope to pursue long after the class ends.” To begin your journey or for more information, please contact Marcy Leiman at 617-559-8734.

Early Mystic Minyan - 8:30 am weekly
As it says in the Mishnah, the early mystics would gather together and sit for an hour before even attempting to formally engage in prayer. So too at CSH we offer the Early Mystic Minyan as an option for practitioners of meditation to come and sit as we begin to open up the space of our Sanctuary on Shabbat and of our hearts in the early quiet hours before the crowds arrive. There will be minimal, if any, instruction for the first fifteen minutes. It is a time to gather one’s self and one’s thoughts together through individual prayer without words.
Renewal Minyan - 8:45 - 9:50 am weekly
The Renewal Minyan is an attempted synthesis of keva – the traditional structure of tefillah (Jewish prayers) with kavanah – spiritual depth within the prayer itself. During the Renewal Minyan we are committed to traversing the Shabbat morning tefillot structure (Birkot HaShachar, P’seukei D’Zimrah, Shachrit), but not necessarily davening (praying) each and every prayer along the way. Our aim, again, is to strike a balance between breadth and depth, and within a one hour period that is a fine balance, to be sure.
Living Minyan: Traditional Prayers and Learning - 9:00 am weekly
The great thing about being Jewish is to be part of a tradition that is thousands of years old! But if you can’t read Hebrew, don’t know the words, or maybe can’t carry a tune, tradition can feel a little daunting. Come and join Jan Brodie and friends in a safe, welcoming space to discover the beauty of traditional Jewish liturgy, prayer and song in a user-friendly format. Yoga Minyan - 10:00 am weekly
A full-body Shabbat experience. Yoga Minyan incorporates yoga practice with a Shabbat theme.

Please join our Chesed Committee to assist our congregation members at times, both urgent and on-going, with the generous energy of our congregation.
Chesed is our opportunity to give and receive a helping hand. Please volunteer for as little as a few hours a year to care for the needs of our members.
Chesed ‘Reach Out’ program is to assist in emergency situations with meals, rides, child care, or Shiva. Chesed ‘Reach In’ program is to address our members’ more on-going needs such as a phone call, a visit, a meal, a ride to services, a new member buddy, new parent outreach, or simply being in touch and lending a helping hand.
I invite you to email me with your name, email address and phone number where can you can be called on to help.
As a Chesed Committee volunteer, there are no meetings. All communications are by email and phone, when needed.
Please call CSH if you have any needs we can help with.
With lovingkindness,
Nancy Sheena Sarles

BrotherhoodBrian Cohen, President
Greetings from the Brotherhood!
Those who know us, know well that our Brotherhood is a fun group. We like to gather, eat, enjoy each other's company, and when we can, we work to improve our shul and our community. We are always looking for our next opportunity to have a good time and to strengthen the bonds amongst the men of our congregation.
2015 is already off to a great start. Our Poker Night in January was another success. Thank you for all those that came out and helped us to raise funds for our Burt and Becky Shepard Scholarship Awards.
Here is a summary of some coming events --
Plaques The Brotherhood has been asked to volunteer for a special project. This will be a Mitzvah for CSH. All of the yahrzeit plaques from Temple Israel, Temple Beth El and Anshei Tsfard are in the basement. We need a few handy men to help unscrew them from their racks and then categorize them alphabetically. The office will then be distributing them to their proper families. We would like to get this done before the end of February. Please contact me directly and we will pick a Sunday to get this done. Send emails to [email protected].
Scholarship Awards It's that time of year again. We will soon be getting ready for our annual Burt and Becky Shepard, Scholarship Awards. These are gifts that we give out to our congregation's High School Seniors. All applicants must be participating members of CSH. Interviews will be held on Easter Sunday (04/05), following morning Minyan. The Awards Breakfast will be on a Sunday in May (date TBD). If you wish to donate, please make checks payable to, The CSH Brotherhood; Note - Burt & Shepard Scholarship Fund. Every little bit helps! If you have not done so already, please contact us, ASAP, if you have an eligible high school senior. If you wish to be on the selection committee, please attend our next meeting.
Our next meeting... Another breakfast 02/22 -- Be there at 9:00 for Minyan. Afterwards, we will put out a wide spread to feed you (kosher \ dairy) while we discuss the issues of the day. Please RSVP so that we have the right amount of food. RSVP to [email protected].
We are always looking for new projects. If you have an event in mind for the Brotherhood, please do not hesitate to contact us. Send emails to [email protected].
L'chaim!
