Look No Further for Your

Man Cave Treasures Yes, there are times when shopping could get a little boring for Mr. Rugged. Those strategically placed benches along Auglaize Street have been known to call after time spent browsing cute decor, furniture, and flowers. But, before you think there’s little for you among the many shops Wapak boasts, think again. Quite a few shops have great things that appeal to guys, and Winding Road Sales is no different. They have exactly what you’ve been needing for that man cave. Whether you are a motorcycle enthusiast, a farmer, a hunter, love sailing, beer or the Buckeyes, you can find something here. Check out the handmade Ohio shaped signs which feed your love of John Deere or Indian Motorcycles. Is it a neon light you’re looking for? Have those, and can get more. How about handmade cases to hold those beer or pop bottles, complete with insignias of things you hold near and dear? In the right hands, quite a few pieces of furniture found in the store could double as a great bar, with mirrors and wall decor to finish the look. And, if you don’t find what you need, Ted has quite a few contacts to help find that perfect piece. If the store is not open, call for an appointment at 419-302-0825. Happy hunting!

Shawnee native Ted Spencer’s path has been filled with experiences which have led to Winding Road Sales. Starting his career as an automotive painter provided him with the skills needed to take something old and beaten up and turn it into something people would want again. Looking for an entertainment center and not finding anything that suited him, Ted bought an old dresser and repurposed it. It not only worked for him, but became a hit with friends who also wanted something similar. He started selling things out of his home, and four years ago this October opened his own store in Wapak. Ted has an eye for eclectic, one of a kind items, collected from estate sales, auctions, flea markets and the like. Loving the idea of repurposing to bring new life to an old piece, Ted started working on some of the many pieces of furniture he had acquired, making a great

discovery along the way. “Sometime,” he says, “the biggest mess ups end up making the best pieces.” He discovered that fact when he applied a crackle finish to a piece, left for lunch, then came back to what he thought was a ruined finish. Much to his surprise, a customer arrived a few days later, fell in love with it and took it home. Volunteering for several years for Habitat for Humanity turned into a full time job last year when Ted became manager of ReStore in Lima. Consequently, hours at the store have become infrequent, but if you call 419-302-0825, Ted will find a time to meet with you.

Private Classes Available!

Want to learn how to

repurpose things? Ted

offers private classes for

1-6 people. Using Webster’s

Chalk Paint Powder allows

for more variety because it

can be used with any brand

or color of latex paint.

Starting with practice

boards, students experiment

with different colors and

techniques before trying

their hand at repurposing a

chair.

No Summer Moon Festival would be complete without all the activities planned at The Armstrong Air & Space Museum! The wildly popular Run to the Moon 1, 5 and 10K runs begin at 7 am with an awards presentation from 10:30-11. The big surprise? This year the USAF and Pentagon has approved a FLY OVER for the awards and opening ceremonies! Col. BUZZ ALDRIN will be the honored guest! Needless to say, the AA&SM is out of this world with excitement! The museum has many other activities planned, including visiting animals from the Toledo Zoo, a Moon Pie eating contest, Mad Science’s Dr Bob Tesla, concerts by the Lima Symphony String Quartet and Lima Area Concert Bands, a hands-on Imagination Station, model rocket launches, and space-themed inflatables. Kids will also have fun interacting with Star Wars characters, WBGU’s Ruby the tree frog, Mike Mallory, the Apollo 11 Frog Man, and the Lost In Space robot. Whether you are downtown or out at the museum, there’s fun to be had!

Share Your Wapak Pride! Looking for a way to share your Wapak pride? DWP has just the thing. Area artist Michelle Walker draws inspiration from her surroundings, and has produced four watercolors depicting familiar and beloved spots in our own Wapakoneta. Each watercolor has been professionally reprinted on quality postcard size stock, suitable for framing or sending. It’s an easy way to send a little bit of Wapak to those family members living out of state. And, all sales directly benefit Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership projects such as the much needed Facade Improvement program. Cards are $4.00 each, or four for $15.00. You can choose one of each, or any combination. Cards may be purchased at Image Masters, The Armstrong Air and Space Museum, Casa Chic, Miracles on Mane, and through Summer Moon Festival at the Chamber of Commerce. Cards will also be on sale at the DWP booth on Saturday during the Summer Moon Festival where Michelle will be on hand to sign copies.

RADA cutlery is always available at Thrifty Treasures for purchase. Don’t

see what you need? Special order it! RADA makes great gifts and benefits Wapak in the process.

True story! A couple from out of town walked into a local shop recently and asked, “Is someone shooting a movie out there or something?” When asked why they would think Wapak was the setting for a movie, they explained things just didn’t look like small towns they had experienced. People were out and about with shopping bags in hand and smiles on their faces. Shop doors were open and flags were flying. People were sitting on benches and chatting. It just seemed like a scene from a movie. What that couple was experiencing is something more and more people have noticed: Wapakoneta is becoming a great place to shop, meet up with friends and family, and just have a good time. And a city’s downtown is the heart of such growth. A decade or so ago, a concerned and growing group of business owners, organizations, city government and citizens united with a common purpose, that of encouraging, enhancing and promoting what has become a viable social and economic downtown district. And the result has been positive. Our historic downtown district has seen buildings occupied and repaired, new businesses opening and successful, and increased shopping and dining traffic. The importance of our donors and supporters, from local businesses large and small to city government and local citizens cannot be denied. Without you, our downtown would not be where it is today. We are extremely grateful for the past vision and support of the City of Wapakoneta, it’s Economic Development Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Wapakoneta Antiques and Specialty Shops, Armstrong Air and Space Museum, the Auglaize County Public District Library, and Riverside Arts Center and look forward to continuing to work together in strong partnership to grow our community. All can help by visiting local businesses, supporting fundraisers, and enjoying this great sense of community!
