After a cold, wet winter, finally Spring is in the air! At the farm, the cool weather veg-

gies are growing in the field. The greenhouses are overflowing with tomatoes, egg-plants, peppers, basil, cucumbers, summer squash, and watermelon awaiting warmer weather and their time in the

sun. What a fitting time to invite everyone to the farm to celebrate spring and renew our connection to the earth!

Beyond celebration, the Green Earth Fair offers opportunities for learning about the environment, nutritional health,

and how we can practice sustainability in our homes, yards, and gardens. Take advantage of expert resources to learn more about the foot you eat and how to put green into practice.

Exhibition Booths: Local exhibitors will be providing information about their activities and products to help

you achieve a greener and healthier lifestyle. See the Exhibitor Guide (pages 8-12) and map (Page 7) for details.

Food: This year, we are pleased to have Braconi’s Pizza (Booth 41) and Two Mothers Foods

(Booth 43) offering food for purchase. Braconi’s is a local pizzeria offering traditional Italian pizza slices. Two Mothers is a minimal-waste, natural food vendor featuring ham

and veggie wraps.

Whole Foods will be offering a variety of free snacks and samples (Booth 44) in the

exhibit area, including food from Chef Ron Moore’s cooking demonstrations (available while supplies last).

Drinks: Arbor Vitae’s booth (42) will have a variety of beverages available for purchase. Com-

plimentary water will be available through the Green Earth Institute either in your own container or in recyclable paper cups.

Entertainment: Be sure to spend some time at the Main Stage. Sit under the tree and enjoy the tal-

ented entertainers! There will be live performances throughout the afternoon. See the Scheduled Events section (page 3) for details.

Natural Areas:

Take a walking tour of the restored natural areas including the wetlands, prairie patch,

butterfly garden, and rain garden, led by staff of The Conservation Foundation. This tour’s start time is 2:30 p.m., leaving from the Fire Circle near the barn.

Sales:

Purchase some greenery to take home with you! Organic vegetable and herb seedlings

grown by the Green Earth Institute farmers are in the entrance circle, along with native landscaping plants from Growing Place.

The Green Earth Institute leases 49 acres of farmland from The

Conservation Foundation. The farm was donated to the Foundation by Mrs. Lenore McDonald, who passed away in 2000 at age 92. She and

her late husband had moved to the farm in 1949. Historical records show that the property was first farmed by European settlers in the

1830s. With its prime location overlooking the west branch of the

DuPage River, no doubt this land was used by Native Americans for centuries before the Europeans came. The Conservation Foundation

uses the farmhouse for its office.

What is the Green Earth Institute?

The Green Earth Institute is a local nonprofit educational organization established in 2002, centered on an organic vegetable farm in Naperville. The mission of the

Green Earth Institute is to promote nutritional health and environmental sustainability. Using our organic farm as a demonstration and learning center, we grow healthful

vegetables in an earth-friendly way and educate about nature, nutrition, and caring for

the earth. The Institute leases the farm land at the McDonald Farm, 10S404 Knoch Knolls

Road, which is owned by The Conservation Foundation. The farm crew grows 40 vege-table and herb crops on approximately 20 acres, and the remainder of the land has

cover crops of alfalfa and red clover. Each summer the Institute conducts educational programs for children—Nature

Rangers summer camps for elementary school-age kids, Nature Buddies for pre-

schoolers and their parents, Green Scene programs for 6th through 9th graders, and new this summer, Families on the Farm, for kids of all ages!

The primary adult education event is the annual Green Earth Fair, which includes speakers, demonstrations, and exhibits about ways to use earth-friendly practices in

our gardens, yards, and homes.

Membership and contributions to support the Green Earth Institute are most appre-ciated. The Institute has 501(c)(3) tax status, so contributions are tax deductible. Vol-

unteers are always welcome.

The farm land used by the Green Earth Institute is leased from The Conservation Foun-

dation, a not-for-profit land and watershed protection organization established in 1972. The mission of the Foundation is to preserve open space and natural lands, protect rivers

and watersheds, and promote stewardship of our environment. The Foundation maintains a support base of nearly 5,000 members and donors, and

500 volunteers in the primary counties in which it works—DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will.

The Foundation focuses its work in four activity areas: Land Preservation, River and Water-shed Improvement, Public Policy Advocacy, and Environmental Education. For more infor-

tute and The Conservation Foundation are both committed to stewardship of the land, and they collaborate on various projects.

In 2010 The Conservation Foundation,

owner of the farmland leased by the Green Earth Institute, completed a water conserva-

tion and renewable energy project with practi-cal and educational value. The new wind tur-

bine and solar panels generate electricity that

is used by the Foundation for its business of-fice functions. The Green Earth Institute col-

laborated with the Foundation on construction of a rainwater harvesting and storage system.

Water from the roofs of the barn and granary is stored in a 25,000 gallon cistern, then used

in the farm's irrigation system.

Nature Buddies This program is geared for children ages 3 to 5 (entering kindergarten) with an accompanying adult. Nature Bud-dies meets once a week May through September on Thursdays from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Afternoon sessions are avail-

able in June, July, and August, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. In October a special mini-session will be held on two Friday mornings.

Parents and toddlers will have adventures of discovery in the garden, woods, wetlands, and farm yard using age-appropriate songs, stories, guided play, and nature walks. Activities will vary from session to session, and you may

sign up for multiple sessions.

Nature Rangers Summer Camps Elementary-age children are invited to participate in summer camps at the farm. Nine one-week sessions run Mon-day-Friday from 9:00-Noon. The children will explore gardening with hands-on activities including planting, tending,

and harvesting vegetables, herbs, and flowers at the farm. There will be nature exploration and learning about the food we grow through crafts and games. Each child will plant and take home a container garden. Two age divi-

sions: children entering grades 1-2 and those entering grades 3-5.

Green Scene Has your child outgrown our summer camps in age but not in passion? Youth entering 6th through 9th grades will

join us at the farm for an afternoon of unique experiences. We'll explore the fields, harvest organic veggies, clean

and prepare them for the freshest taste they've ever had. Participants will discover how to prepare a healthy meal made from fresh, seasonal, organic vegetables grown right on the farm. They'll learn how to make exciting, simple

dishes and sample what they've prepared. Sessions on Wednesday afternoons June 22, July 20, and August 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Monarch Butterfly (Table #48)

Don’t miss out on Monarch Butterfly (a.k.a. Carolyn Finzer)! She will be at a table near the Butterfly Garden.

Carolyn Finzer is a long-time Naperville resident widely known for her storytelling and colorful cos-tumes. Today she takes on the persona of Mon-arch Butterfly, the Illinois State Insect, and will provide education about ―puddling gardens‖ for the butterflies to drink and sun themselves.

Musical Craft Area Make a musical instrument from recycled materials. This will be throughout the day as supplies last. If you plan on participating in the musical parade at 3:15 p.m., please be sure to visit this area near the main stage.

Musical Parade (Main Stage Area) Kids may make musical instruments from recycled materials at the Musical Crafts booth near the Main Stage, then march in the Chil-dren's Parade at 3:15. The parade will be led by Carolyn Finzer, costumed as a Monarch Butterfly—the Illinois state insect!

All critters are adapted to survive in their habitats. You can learn a lot by looking at their skin, bones, homes, behaviors, sounds, and more. Which critters you will find visiting us depends on the weather and availability, so come by the exhibit of The Conservation Foundation and be surprised.

Baby goats will be onsite at our farm visiting from their dairy farm in nearby Carol Stream!

Truck Farm Chicago (Table #13)

One of our new, fun exhibitors will be dis-playing their truck.

Truck Farm Chicago is a mini-farm planted in the back of a pick-up truck. The biodiesel-powered Farm-On-Wheels is an edible exhibit used to engage youth about connections be-tween food, wellness and the health of the envi-ronment. Truck Farm Chicago is a Green Sugar Press and Seven Generations Ahead project.

#12 Bloom High School: Solar-Powered Oil Recovery Center (SPORC) web.mit.edu/invent With a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT program, the students of Bloom HS invented, designed and built a device for collecting waste vegetable oil and cleaning it for use as a fuel for waste vegetable oil cars or as a feedstock for biodiesel production. The device is solar powered and can be used to clean the oil at the site of collection.

was beekeeping during retirement and suggested Glen needed bees for his struggling gardens and fruit trees. When Glen finally gave in, his crop production tripled—and he was sold! Glen is a member of the Cook-DuPage

Beekeepers Association and the Illinois State Beekeepers Association. He keeps his bees here at the McDonald

Ed Beaulieu is Chief Sustainability Officer for Aquascape, Inc., the leading installer of residential and commercial rain water harvesting systems in the area. Believing that rain water is a resource that should not be simply

flushed away, Ed designs and installs water capture and reservoir systems, along with pumping mechanisms so

the water may be used, commonly for yard or garden irrigation. Ed will describe the farm's new system to harvest rain water from the roofs of the barn and granary for use in the Green Earth Institute's farm irrigation

system. This involves a 25,000 gallon cistern in the ground between the barn and the granary.

The Cattails - Musical Band 12:30 p.m. on the Main Stage

Established in 1996, the Cattails are a four-piece band based in Winfield Illinois. Joe Wadz on Fiddle, Clever Dave Allen on Gui-tar, Babette Dean on Keyboards and Mike Warfel on Bass bring together decades of experience playing folk, rock, jazz, country, pop, blues and other styles. Ten Penny Annie - Musical Band 1:00 p.m. on the Main Stage Ten Penny Annie started out as a ragtag group of parents whose children attended the same school. They have evolved into a more musical group, playing mostly Celtic tunes, with a few folk and country songs thrown in.

Japanese Koto Music - Musical Band 1:15 p.m. on the Main Stage Kazuko Narabayashi, Yuko Matsubara, and Mayumi Seino comprise this ensemble specializing in the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument with thirteen strings. They have performed at libraries, schools, museums and various festivals in the Chicago area.

Rick Alaska - Musician 1:45 p.m. on the Main Stage Rick Alaska performs US / UK & Canadian folk along with 60s/70s ballads on 6 and 12 string guitars. He also performs some originals. The Dollparts - Musical Band 2:00 p.m. on the Main Stage The Dollparts are a brand new band from the Naperville area. Dana DeStefano is the vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Gerald Rien-ton plays bass, Luke Ostojic plays lead guitar, and Nathan Alaska is the keyboardist, but they're still looking for a permanent drummer to make the band complete. They will be playing an acoustic set of indie, 90's inspired originals and a few fun covers.

Amy - Musician 2:15 p.m. on the Main Stage Amy Zoglauer is a singer/songwriter who has performed at various coffeehouses and restaurants in the Chicago area. She started playing guitar at age 11, and recorded her original songs at Steve Jacula's Old Plank Studio in 2007 & 2009. In addition to her original songs, she covers several of KT Tunstall's hits. Amy plans to finish recording her first CD in 2011 and looks forward to a bright future of musical productivity.

Indian Country - Folk Band 2:30 p.m. on the Main Stage Indian Country invites you to travel with them from the land of India to good ole’ country swing folk songs, with a dash of energy conservation thrown in for good measure. Clap to original songs about the past, as well as songs of the future. You’ll be thinking globally, all from your comfy chair. Audience participation invited on a few songs.

The Hominids - Musical Band 3:30 p.m. on the Main Stage

The Hominids were founded in Berkeley, CA in 1969. After their initial recording contract fell through, the group briefly disbanded then reformed in L.A. in 1973 only to disband again. The mists of time cloud the intervening years, but in 1996 the Hominids found themselves located in the Chicago area and began playing live gigs throughout the Midwest. Constant touring sharpened the band’s skills while shaping the meandering live show format they have become famous for. The Green Earth Institute sells its vegetables through its

Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. A CSA is a direct relationship between consumers and a local food grower.

Participating consumers contribute to the farm’s yearly operat-ing budget by purchasing in advance a share of the season’s

harvest. By making this commitment ahead of time, CSA share-

holders join the farmer in assuming the costs, risks and rewards of growing that season’s crops. Share fees go toward seeds,

supplies, labor, water, equipment maintenance, and other costs. In return, the farm provides fresh, nutritious vegetables

throughout the season. Forty different vegetables and herbs are being grown this

year. The 20-week Main Season harvest runs from mid-June

through October, and recently we added a 4-week Spring share and a 4-week Late Fall share. CSA subscribers come to the farm weekly or biweekly to pick up a ¾ bushel box of freshly-harvested vegetables. Some subscribers team

up with others in their area and take turns making the drive to pick up. The 2011 season will be the ninth year of this very popular program. Our produce is USDA certified organic.

at Fair time there are still shares available. Every year we have sold out, and we know that will happen again soon in 2011.
