Nelson Waldorf NewsTh e Nelson Waldorf is happy to an-

nounce that we are experiencing our strongest enrolment in 7 years with almost 175 children attending.

Beverley Barcham, School Admin-istrator, commented, “It feels good to know our school is in such a place of health, both fi nancially and socially. Part of our success is due to our ‘fi rst year free of tuition’ incentive which allows families to experience and try out Waldorf education with no fi nan-cial risk. We are fortunate too that we can off er an aff ordable education while still maintaining small classes.” (Th e average 1st-8th class size is 19)

“It really is a great start to the year,” says NWS Board Chair James Loepp-ky. “Th e expanded childcare centre, Kindergarten programs for both full and half day attendance, and the ex-panded Grade Five Class have all helped in this great achievement. It has also helped that the average tu-ition paid per student is $1350 per year (tuition reduction programs are available to all families). which real-ly makes the school aff ordable for a broad range of families.”

Debora Oese-Loyd long time Waldorf teacher and Class 5 teacher at the Nelson Waldorf School noted that “Once children join a class and take part in all that is off ered, their parents begin to see how the Wal-dorf curriculum is meeting their child at each stage of their emo-tional, intellectual, and physical development. It really is a joy to see how new children to the school blossom as they increase their skills and confi dence.”

Th anks goes out to the Nelson community for your support for nearly 30 years.

Parents who wish to see what Waldorf Education is about can come see for themselves. School tours, where parents view class-es in session, ie Windows on Waldorf tours, are taking place on Th ursdays, September 29, October 27 and November 24 at 8:30 am.

Call 250-352-6919 for regis-tration and information or visit the school website at http://www.nelsonwaldorf.org/

New to town in early 2010, MJ Biallas and her husband Harry began curling last fall to meet new people and try a new sport.

Successful in achieving both of those goals, MJ is excited about the upcoming season. She recommends that anyone who wants to give curling a try should do so. “You never know, you may have a blast. I did, and learned that cold sports can be fun too!”

NOTICE OF POWER INTERRUPTION IN THE KASLO AREA

3110

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

When: Monday, October 3rd, 2011We will be making electrical system improvements in the Kaslo area on October 3rd. To ensure the safety of our work crews, it will be necessary to interrupt electrical service for approximately 4 hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The area affected will be ALL customers north of the Kaslo Substation to Meadow Creek, including Schroeder Creek, Johnsons Landing, Lardeau, Argenta and Howser.

Please protect all sensitive equipment. We recognize the inconvenience this may cause, and will restore service safely and as efficiently as possible.

Shorten restoration time during a power outage by switching lights and electrical equipment off. Wait one hour after power is restored before switching on multiple appliances to allow the system time to stabilize.

Prepare for outages and stay informed by visiting bchydro.com/outages or bchydro.com/mobile from your handheld device. Please call 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766) if you experience any electrical difficulties or for more information.

For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart.

Fall Report From St. Andrew’s Heritage Centre

Kaslo’s St. Andrew’s church summer “Saddle-Bag” wor-ship series is completed, and the off season schedule of in-formal worship at 10 am on the 2nd Sunday of the month has commenced.

In a great spirit of generosity by the public at the Jazz Service on July 31, we were able to send a sizeable do-nation to the Horn of Africa Famine Appeal. A sincere thank you to all who contributed to this appeal.

Th e upgrade of our kitchen facility in Heritage Hall has been completed on time, and on budget. We are most ap-preciative of the grants we received for this project, and the quality of the work by those who did the upgrades.

Our appreciation to the project manager Aimee, as well.Th is upgrade now allows the kitchen to be used in a

broader way, and the Food Hub Management has sched-uled a variety of classes there this fall.

Th e Seniors Keeping Connected, stretching and exercise program will resume on November 1 through to April, and is held bi-weekly on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Membership to be enrolled in this group is now $10 for the season, or a $2 drop-in fee.

Bookings for use of the facility can be made by email at [email protected]

Good Fences And Good CansMake Good Neighbours

Nelson, Area E and F Bear Aware has now lent out 9 electric fencing setups to residents to protect chickens and fruit trees from bears. Properly installed and maintained electric fencing does discourage bears. Eleven people at-tended our recent electric fencing workshop (sponsored by the CBT and RDCK). We now have no more fencers to lend for this season, but you can still contact Bear Aware ([email protected]) for information and as-sistance with fencing.

Garbage is still the primary bear attractant in our area and across the province. Nelson now has a wildlife at-tractant bylaw (3198 Waste Management and Wildlife Attractant Bylaw), that among other things, restricts the presence of curbside garbage to the hours of 5 am to 7 pm on the day of collection. In addition, garbage must be stored in a wildlife resistant structure or garbage con-tainer. Please contact the city for more information and check the city website to read the actual bylaw.

Bear Aware has worked with Nelson Farmer’s Supply to bring a sample bear-resistant can from Rollin’s Ma-chinery into Farmer’s Supply. You can order similar or larger cans from Rollins through Farmer’s Supply. Th ere are other bear-resistant containers available and you can visit www.bearaware.bc.ca to fi nd the best option for your needs. Th ese cans have been properly tested against grizzly bears. Th ey provide an option for people unable to store garbage in a secure structure between collection days. Bear-resistant cans must be kept clean and secured to keep a bear from taking the entire can.

Nelson Area E and F Bear Aware will be tag-ging garbage out on the curb overnight with bright yellow “Bear Attractant” sticker. We hope such tag-ging will remind people to keep garbage secured in a bear resistant container or structure until the mor-ning of collection. Garbage is a bucket of bear food – let’s not create a bear smor-gasbord on our streets the night before collection. Learn how to live in bear country – explore more solutions at www.bear-aware.bc.ca.

Please contact the Con-servation Offi cer Service at the RAPP line (1-877-952-7277) with any bear sightings, property or safe-ty concerns. Bear Aware gratefully acknowledges support from the Colum-bia Basin Trust and the RDCK.

What’s Happening At Periwinkle Children’s Centre

To start the fall season, Kaslo’s Periwinkle Children’s Centre held a free Family Fun Day, put together by board members and staff . Th e event included a puppet show, treasure hunt, clay workshop, music parade, pizza from “Buddy’s Front Street Pizzeria,” homemade goodies, and marimbas for all to try. Come Sing TogetherYou are invited to a fun aft ernoon of singing and listen-

ing to songs at the Capitol Th eatre (421 Victoria Street) in Nelson on Sunday, October 2 at 2 pm to celebrate the launch of a new seniors’ Sing-along book: Sing Together. Th is event will feature individuals and singing groups of all ages from the area: Glacier Harmony, Second Winds, Barbershop Chorus as well as other individuals and spe-cial guests. Th is project was made possible by “Friends of Nelson Elders” and funded by New Horizons for Seniors Programme (NHSP).

Th ere will be general seating; donations at the door.

ODB Th anksgiving DinnerOur Daily Bread’s Annual Community Th anksgiving

Dinner is here once again. Th e turkey dinner with all the fi xings will be held on Monday, October 10, 5 pm at 812 Stanley Street (Our Daily Bread Hall) and will be a kick-off for the Nelson Action on Homelessness Week.

Th e Nelson Investor’s Group has donated $250 to this campaign; some of their employees will be volunteering to serve and cleanup at the dinner, as well. Th is is the eighth year that the Nelson Investor’s Group has been in-volved with Our Daily Bread’s Annual Th anksgiving Din-ner. We rely on our volunteers and donations to provide this Th anksgiving meal. Last year, there were over 150 people in attendance from the community.

Our Daily Bread, located at 812 Stanley Street, runs fi ve days per week year-round and is almost completely run

by volunteers. Our Daily Bread is a barrier-free environ-ment that is open to anyone.

Currently, Our Daily Bread receives no government funding and relies on donations from community mem-bers and corporate sponsors. Our Daily Bread has part-nered with S.H.A.R.E. (Supporting Humanity and Re-sponsible Ecology) Nelson, one of Nelson’s second hand furniture stores, and receives $18,000 in annual sup-port from them in order to continue its operations. It is the hope of the management of S.H.A.R.E. Nelson that S.H.A.R.E. Nelson will be able to completely support Our Daily Bread from its profi ts as well as other humanitarian projects in the near future.

Many of the guests who come to Our Daily Bread have commented that without the meal provided, they would be unable to survive. For many, this meal means that they don’t have to choose between paying the rent and feed-ing their families. Without the support of the community, Our Daily Bread would not be able to provide this basic need for the people of Nelson.

If you would like to support Our Daily Bread or join our team of volunteers, contact our offi ce at 250-352-7700, offi ce@kcfoffi ce.com, www.kootenaychristianfellowship.com or feel free to stop in for lunch and see Our Daily Bread’s success. Members of the community are also in-vited to come to the Th anksgiving dinner to enjoy good food and a time of fellowship.

Know About Carbon MonoxideIn certain weather it can be tempting to bring heaters

or portable generators into enclosed or partially enclosed camping spaces like tents, cars, campers or RVs. However, fuel-based camping equipment like heaters, stoves, barbe-cues and kerosene lamps are meant to be used outside be-cause they can emit deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas.

CO is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that blocks your body’s ability to absorb oxygen. It is produced when a fuel such as gasoline, oil, kerosene, natural gas, wood or propane burns incompletely.

When appliances like barbecues or stoves are brought into enclosed spaces, carbon monoxide (CO) can get trapped creating a toxic and potentially lethal environ-ment. As part of a carbon monoxide safety campaign, the BC Safety Authority is currently urging all campers to keep warm with extra clothes and blankets and leave appliances outside.

Immediately seek medical attention if you or anyone else shows symptoms of CO poisoning:

• Headaches;• Nausea/fl u like symptoms;• Dizziness;• Drowsiness;• Confusion;• Impaired judgment;• Lack of physical coordination;• Unconsciousness.For more information, visit the BC Safety Authority

website at www.safetyauthority.ca/carbon-monoxide
