Enhance Your Gardens WorkshopWant to improve the food production of your garden?

Looking for something new or unusual? Lardeau Valley Seed Savers (LVSS) off ers 3 workshops to help you achieve this goal. On the last Sunday of January, February and March a speaker/workshop series will be held at the Lar-deau Valley Hall in Meadow Creek. Th ere is no cost for these sessions; a donation to cover costs is appreciated.

Sunday, January 29 from 1 pm to 3 pm – mycologist Peter McAllister will present Enlivening your Relationship with Mushrooms. Topics include using mycorrhizal fungi to boost yields in the garden, how to harvest and cure mushrooms to increase the vitamin D levels and how to start, grow and harvest homegrown mushrooms indoors and out using local natural materials.

Sunday, February 26 from 1 pm to 3:30 pm – the developer of Mycrobz Bacteria Solutions (Kaslo), Todd Veri, will share Probiotics for your Garden. Understand how benefi cial bac-teria and yeast act as a fertilizer factory in the soil, protect your plants, recycle all your organic waste, germinate seeds, dispose of noxious weeds and seeds, and even save the bees.

A Seed Exchange will follow for you to obtain seeds which the LVSS members have grown.

Sunday, March 25 from 12 pm to 4 pm - Befriending Bees with entomologist Lynn Westcott. Learn why bees are our champion pollinators, how to identify native bees, and understand why we shouldn’t be afraid of them. Take home a list of the food-producing plants pollinated by bees through-out the growing season. Build your own native bee nest and learn how to provide pollinator-friendly yards and gardens.

Before this presentation a simple lunch will be provided and a chance for informal garden chats. Preregistration is required for lunch and for the nest building portion, which is limited to 15 participants who will need to bring some simple equipment. Th ere is no need to preregister for the presentation only, which will begin at 12:45 pm. To preregister, email [email protected] or call 250-366-4452.

Lardeau Valley Seed Savers encourages seed saving as one means of enhancing our local food/seed security by establishing our own local seed bank. Gardening with your own seeds, and continually reproducing them, excites the most modest gardener. We meet monthly for an education-

al session and informal discussion. Everyone is welcome to join us. Information will be available at the workshops.

Ski Bum: Th e Musical It doesn’t matter if you’re a musical buff , ski bum, ski

buff , or musical bum, Ski Bum: Th e Musical is a fast-paced, shredding good time for the whole family. Iron Mountain Th eatre (IMT) is proud to present the return of their smash hit: Ski Bum: Th e Musical on Friday, Janu-ary 27 and Saturday, January 28 at Rossland Secondary School. Th e show and laughs begin at 7:30 pm.

IMT (the company who brought you, White Star Lady, and Company jump) is the Kootenay’s hottest professional theatre company.

Ski Bum: Th e Musical tells the story of one ski bum near-ly cresting over the hill, with all of his youthful energy in-tact…and that’s the problem. Jeff Snowden needs to grow up a little, and act more responsibly if he wants things to go his way in adulthood. When an old fl ame at Big Snow Peak sparks a renewed interest in Jeff ’s heart, he starts to consider the benefi ts of gaining a level of maturity. With the help of cultural anthropologist, played by new cast member Grant Waters, studying the culture and practices of ski-bummery, and a sometimes-not-so-nice head of ski patrol, he begins to see that he doesn’t have to give up ski-ing and having fun in order to evolve.

Ski Bum is jammed packed with hummable tunes that span a wide range of genres, jokes that run the gamut of humour from slapstick to high comedy, and eleven inspired musical performances. Th e innuendo alone is enough to tickle even the most chafed of funny-bones. Don’t forget to take the ‘Ski Bums’ home with you! Th e cast has been hard at work on the release of their original soundtrack record-ing which will be available for purchase at the show.

So come on out you ski bums, snow bums, skinny bums, and large bums. Tickets are available at Rossland Pro Hardware for $15. Can’t make it to the Rossland shows? Not to worry, catch Ski Bum: Th e Musical in the BC ski town nearest you. Th is year the cast is headed to Nelson on Th ursday, February 9; Kaslo on Friday, February 10 and in Trail on Friday, Mar 2.For more information, please go to the website: www.ironmountaintheatre.ca

Kaslo’s Annual Amnesty International Film Fest

On Friday, January 20 Kaslo will be hosting its 4th An-nual Amnesty International Film Fest in conjunction with the Kootenay Regional Amnesty Film Fest with the show-ing of a very powerful fi lm.

Children of War (75 min) is a unique documentary which follows a group of former child soldiers from northern Uganda as they escape the battlefi eld and reach the sanctuary of a rehabilitation centre. Here they under-go a remarkable process of trauma therapy and emotional healing with the help of a remarkable group of trauma counselors. Th is fi lm won the “Best Feature Award” at the Los Angeles Film Festival and “Th e Justice Award” at the Berlin Cinema for Peace Festival.

Don’t miss this inspirational evening on Friday, January 20, 7 pm at Th e Langham. Suggested donation is $8/$6. Proceeds go to Amnesty International for the protection of human rights around the world through education and advocacy.

NELSON

Paige is an extremely sweet senior cat who would fi nd a place for herself in just about any household. She came into the Nelson SPCA as a skin and bones stray with a severe hyperthyroid condition. She has since been treated and sent to a loving foster home, where she is now very healthy and happy. She will need to be on medication for the rest of her life, so there will be no adoption fee for the home which can provide the love and commitment she needs.

Tobacco UseWhat if someone off ered you

$3,000 to throw away your ciga-rettes for good? Th at’s a lot of money – and it’s how much you’d save in just one year if you smoke a pack a day.

Money’s not the only incen-tive, of course. When you quit, even aft er decades of smoking, your body repairs itself and, aft er a while, it’s like you never smoked at all. Imagine… no coughing, no bad breath, no yellow fi ngers, no stained teeth… no more exposing your family and friends to harm-ful secondhand smoke AND extra cash in your pocket.

Amnesty International Film FestHope for the future begins at home, where the big

screen off ers the big picture on Th ursday, January 19 at Castlegar’s Amnesty International Film Festival, this year again the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College. As you likely know, Amnesty International is an independent organization that works to protect human rights around the world through education and advocacy. Th e annual fi lm festival is one way to reach out and engage, educate, and inspire, the better to foster understanding of human rights issues. Th e two fi lms to be shown are:

At 7:00 pm the Danish/German fi lm Blood in the Mobile comes close to home indeed. Most of us don’t know that the ubiquitous presence of cell phones in our society is contributing to violence in the Democratic Republic of

Congo, where the world’s thirst for the mineral cassiterite creates an industry rife with corruption, violence, and hu-man exploitation. Danish director Frank Piasecki Poulsen takes what he fi nds to the mobile phone giant Nokia.

At 8:45 pm the fi lm Cultures of Resistance asks whether music and dance be the weapons of peace? Director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world embroiled in confl ict. She found hope for the future in graffi ti artists fi ghting government oppression in Iran, musicians reaching out to slum kids in Brazil, hip-hop artists saying their piece in Palestine and other examples of art in the name of peace and justice.

Admission is by donation. For more information, please go to www.selkirk.ca/research/mir-centre-for-peace/peacecafe/
