Unique OperatingCharacteristics of an Enginewith On-Board DiagnosticGeneral Information

The engines supported by thismanual are required to meet HeavyDuty On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)regulations. EPA HD OBD is requiredfor all U.S. vehicles with a grossvehicle weight over 6350 kg [14,000lb].

OBD exists to make sure the engineis operating within emissions limits.OBD continuously monitors the engineand aftertreatment system to detectmalfunctions that adversely affectemissions. Once a malfunction isdetected, a malfunction indicator lamp(MIL) illuminates to inform the driverof the malfunction and a fault code, which identifies the likely malfunction,is stored in the engine control module(ECM).

An OBD system operates in a mannervery similar to the traditional PACCARdiagnostic system. Both systemsstore fault codes, induce derates whenrequired to protect the engine andaftertreatment from further damage, and illuminate dashboard lamps. These fault codes are used by theservice channel for troubleshootingand repair.

The differences between an OBDsystem and the traditional PACCARdiagnostic system are that an OBDsystem:

• illuminates the MIL

• detects deteriorated componentsand systems (not just totalmalfunctions)

• performs multiple trip diagnostics

Multiple trip diagnostics aremalfunctions that must occur in

multiple consecutive trips before theMIL is illuminated. A trip is a conditionor operating state the engine mustoperate for the OBD fault code togather information and determine if amalfunction has occurred. The MILturns on when an OBD fault code islogged, and in most cases, it requiresthree trips without a malfunctionoccurrence to clear the lamp.

For more information on the MIL andwhat the operator should do whenthe MIL illuminates, see MalfunctionIndicator Lamp on page 3-4.

Engine Oil Pressure LampTurns On

It is important to maintain oil pressurewithin acceptable limits. If oil pressuredrops below the minimum psi a RedWarning Lamp on the oil pressuregauge and the Stop Engine Lamp willcome ON.

CAUTION

Continuing to operate your vehi-cle with insufficient oil pressuremay cause severe engine damage, equipment or property damage.

• If the oil pressure fails to rise within10 seconds after the engine starts, stop the engine and determine thecause.

• See Lubricating Oil System onpage 5-17, for the correct oilpressure ranges for your vehicle'sengine.

• If the oil pressure suddenly drops,or the audible alarm and engineoil pressure warning light come onwhile driving, do the following:

1. Slow down carefully.

2. Move a safe distance off the roadand stop.

3. Place the transmission inneutral and set the parkingbrake. (See Parking BrakeValve and OPERATING THETRANSMISSION in yourvehicle Operator's Manual, for transmission shifting andparking brake information.)

4. Turn "OFF" the engine.

5. Turn "ON" the emergency flasherand use other warning devices toalert other motorists.

6. Wait a few minutes to allow oilto drain into the engine oil pan,and then check the oil level. (SeeInspection of the Engine Oil Levelon page 5-3.)

7. Add oil if necessary. If the problempersists, contact an authorizedPACCAR engine dealer as soonas possible.

WHAT TO DO IF...

Check Engine Lamp TurnsOn

The Check Engine Lamp turns onwhen a problem exists, but the vehiclecan still be safely driven. Vehicleshould be serviced to correct theproblem but the situation should not beconsidered an emergency.

Engine is Overheating

CAUTION

The cooling system may overheat ifthe engine coolant is at the minimumlevel. A sudden loss of coolant, caused by a split hose or brokenhose clamp could also lead to anoverheat condition. Always inspectto ensure hoses and clamps are notcracked, worn, or loose. Failure tocomply may result in equipment orproperty damage.

NOTEThe system may also temporarilyoverheat during severe operatingconditions such as:

• Climbing a hill on a hot day.

• Stopping after high-speed/high-load driving.

• Debris blocking air flow throughthe cooling module (radiator).

If the engine coolant temperaturewarning lamp comes on and theaudible alarm sounds showing anoverheat condition, or if you have anyother reason to suspect the enginemay be overheating, DO NOT TURNOFF THE ENGINE unless a low waterwarning device indicates a loss ofcoolant. Follow these steps:

1. Reduce engine speed or stop. When stopped, place thetransmission in neutral and set theparking brake. See the vehicleoperator's manual for instructionson transmission shifting andparking brake information.

2. Check to ensure that the oilpressure gauge reads normal.

3. Increase the engine speed to1,100 to 1,200 rpm maximum for2-3 minutes.

4. Monitor the engine temperature. After the temperature returns to

normal, allow the engine to idle3-5 minutes before shutting it off. This allows the engine to coolgradually and uniformly.

5. If the overheating came fromsevere operating conditions, thetemperature should have cooledby this time.

6. Check the coolant level at thecooling module surge tank.

WARNING!

Removing the surge tank fill capwhile the engine is hot can be dan-gerous. Never remove the surgetank cap while the engine is still hot;you could be badly burned. Failureto comply may result in death, per-sonal injury, equipment or propertydamage.

Removing the surge tank fill cap whilethe engine is too hot is dangerous.Scalding steam and fluid underpressure may escape and causeserious personal injuries. Whenremoving the surge tank fill cap, followthese steps:

1. Wait until the coolant temperatureis below 122°F [50°C].

2. Protect your face, hands, andarms by covering the cap with alarge, thick rag to protect againstescaping fluid and steam.

3. Carefully and slowly turn the capone turn to allow excess pressureto escape, then push down andturn for final removal. See thevehicle operator's manual forinstructions on checking and fillingthe cooling module surge tank.

WARNING!

To reduce the chance of personal in-jury and/or vehicle damage causedby engine overheating, never leavethe engine idling when the vehicle isunattended. If the engine overheats, immediate action is required to cor-rect the condition. Continued unat-tended operation of the engine, evenfor a short time, may result in seri-ous engine damage or a fire. Failureto comply may result in death, per-sonal injury, equipment or propertydamage.

WHAT TO DO IF...

CAUTIONDo not allow your engine to idle,at low rpm's (400-600 rpm), longerthan five minutes. Long peri-ods of idling after the engine hasreached operating temperaturescan decrease engine temperatureand cause gummed piston rings, clogged injectors, and possible en-gine damage from lack of lubrica-tion. The normal torsional vibrationsgenerated by the engine can alsocause transmission wear. If anengine must idle for an extendedperiod of time, it should be done atfast idle (1,000 rpm or greater).

NOTEAn idle shutdown feature, availableon PACCAR Engines, can be pro-grammed to shut the engine downafter a period of low idle speed op-eration with no driver activity. Aflashing warning lamp will inform thedriver of an impending shutdown.

NOTEThe power take off (PTO) feature, available on PACCAR engines, canbe programmed to adjust engine idlespeed with the use of switches topre-programmed set points.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

ON/OFF function is controlled by aswitch located on the dash of thevehicle. The engine (VGT) exhaustbrake works by retarding enginespeed by creating high exhaustback pressure. This back pressureis obtained by restricting airflowthrough the turbine housing of theturbocharger. This restriction throughthe turbine housing of the turbochargeris created through positioning of thesliding nozzle (1) located internally tothe variable geometry turbocharger(VGT). the position of the sliding nozzleis controlled by the engine electroniccontrol module (ECM). This optionmay not be available on your vehicle.

WARNING!

The exhaust brake is not intendedas the primary brake for the vehicle, nor is it an emergency brake. Theservice brakes must be used in anemergency. Relying solely on theexhaust brake to stop the vehicle inan emergency could cause an acci-dent and lead to personal injury. Theexhaust brake only helps the servicebrakes by using pressure to slow thedrive train. You must use the ser-vice brakes for quick or emergencystops. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

WARNING!

Do not use the exhaust brake whenoperating on surface with poor trac-tion (such as wet, icy or snow cov-ered roads). Retarders can causethe wheels to skid on a slippery sur-face. You could lose control of thevehicle and jacknife if the wheelsbegin to skid, resulting in an acci-dent. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING!

Do not use an exhaust brake whendriving bobtail or with an unloadedtrailer. There may not be enoughweight on the rear axle to providetraction. This could cause a lossof control and jackknife resulting inan injury accident. Make sure theexhaust brake is switched "OFF"when bobtailing or with an unloadedtrailer. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

NOTEWhen the engine (VGT) exhaustbrake switch is in the "ON" position, the engine's electronic control mod-ule (ECM) monitors inputs (such asaccelerator pedal position and en-gine speed). From these inputs, theECM determines when to enable theengine (VGT) exhaust brake featurewhen the proper braking conditionsare present.

Other features/switches like cruisecontrol, can also affect when theengine (VGT) exhaust brake activates. For more information on how theengine (VGT) exhaust brake functions, refer to vehicle operation manual orcontact a PACCAR Authorized RepairLocation.

WARNING!

To reduce the possibility of personalinjury or property damage, alwaysbe prepared to use the vehicle ser-vice brakes for emergency stopping. The safe control speed of a vehiclewill vary with the size of the load, the type of load, the grade, and theroad conditions. Failure to complymay result in death, personal injury, equipment or property damage.

NOTEThe exhaust brake can only be acti-vated when the accelerator pedal isat its low idle position. With the throt-tle at low idle position, fueling com-mands to the cylinders will not de-tract from the braking power of thebrake system.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

Under cold conditions, theWait-to-Startlamp will illuminate at key on, andwill stay on for a period of up to 30seconds.

NOTEThe length of time the Wait-to-Startlamp remains illuminated dependson the ambient temperature. Thelower the ambient temperature, thelonger the lamp will be illuminated.

Once the Wait-to-Start lamp turns off, turn the key to the starting position tostart the engine.

NOTESome engines are equipped with anengine starting motor protection fea-ture. If the starting motor is engagedfor 30 or more seconds, without theengine starting, the starter will belocked out from operating, allowingfor proper cooling of the starting mo-tor. During this time, the WAIT TOSTART lamp will flash for 2 minutes.Once the lamp discontinues flash-ing, the startingmotor will be allowedto function.

NOTEEngines equipped with air startingmotors require a minimum of 480kPa [70 psi].

CAUTION

Engaging the starter motor for morethan 30 seconds may cause itto overheat and can damage thestarter motor. Never engage thestarter motor for more than 30 sec-onds and wait 2 minutes betweeneach attempt to start the engineto allow the starter motor to cool. This caution does not apply to airstarters.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

NOTEFor engines equipped with the en-gine warm-up protection feature;this feature limits engine speed andtorque following engine start-up untilsufficient oil pressure is available tothe engine components. This fea-ture reduces the risk of engine partdamage due to operating at enginespeeds too high or loads before ad-equate oil pressure is achieved.

Some engines are equipped with aFast Idle Warm Up feature. Whenenabled, this feature elevates the idlespeed of the engine in cold ambientconditions, in order to shorten the timenecessary to warm up the engine. When the idle speed is elevated, theengine noise may change, this isnormal. To bring the engine back tolow idle speed:

• For vehicles equipped with amanual transmission and clutchswitch: Depress the clutch pedal.

• For vehicles equipped with a brakeswitch: Depress the service brakepedal.

• Depress the accelerator pedal.

For more information on the Fast IdleWarm Up feature, contact a PACCARauthorized repair location.

CAUTIONDo not operate the engine at low idlefor long periods with engine coolanttemperature below the minimumspecification in “Cooling System” onpage 5-18. This can result in thefollowing:

• Fuel dilution of the lubricating oil.

• Carbon build up in the cylinder.

• Cylinder head valve sticking.

• Reduced performance.

If an engine must idle for an ex-tended period of time, it shouldbe done at fast idle (1,000 rpm orgreater) until the coolant tempera-ture meets the specification.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

• An increase in oil consumption.

• An increase in fuel consumption.

• Fuel, oil, or coolant leaks.

If the truck is equipped with PTOequipment, the idle shutdown sys-tem can be deactivated when thePTO is operational; however, enginelow RPM idle periods should not ex-ceed 5 minutes whenever possible.

NOTEThe power take off (PTO) feature, available on PACCAR engines, canbe programmed to adjust engine idlespeed with the use of switches topre-programmed set points.

Cold Weather

It is possible to operate engines inextremely cold environments if theyare properly prepared and maintained.Satisfactory performance of anengine in low ambient temperatureconditions requires modification ofthe engine, surrounding equipment, operating practices and maintenanceprocedures.

The correct engine coolant, lubricatingoil and fuels must be used for the coldweather range in which the engine isbeing operated. See the MaintenanceSection on page 5-3 for these criticalengine fluids recommendations andspecifications.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

Tips for Operation onGradeswith Dry Pavement

WARNING!

The engine brake is not intended asthe primary brake for the vehicle, nor is it an emergency brake. Theservice brakes must be used in anemergency. Relying solely on theengine brake to stop the vehicle inan emergency could cause an acci-dent and lead to personal injury. Theengine brake only helps the servicebrakes by using pressure to slow thedrive train. You must use the ser-vice brakes for quick or emergencystops. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

WARNING!

Do not use the engine brake whenoperating on surface with poor trac-tion (such as wet, icy, or snow cov-ered roads). Retarders can causethe wheels to skid on a slippery sur-face. You could lose control of thevehicle and jacknife if the wheelsbegin to skid, resulting in an acci-dent. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

WARNING!

Do not use an engine brake whendriving bobtail or with an unloadedtrailer. There may not be enoughweight on the rear axle to providetraction. This could cause a lossof control and jackknife resultingin an injury accident. Make surethe engine brake is switched "OFF"when bobtailing or with an unloadedtrailer. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

Control speed is the speed at whichthe forces pushing a vehicle down agrade are equal to the forces holdingit back.

CAUTIONNever exceed governed enginespeed because engine damage canoccur. Operating engine beyond thegoverned speed causes additionalstrain on valve train and internal en-gine components. Operate the en-gine within governed engine speed.

NOTEOnce you have determined what thesafe speed is for your vehicle, oper-ate the engine brakes with the trans-mission in the lowest gear that willnot cause the engine speed to ex-ceed the rated engine speed. Theoptimum braking power of the en-gine brakes is reached at rated en-gine speed. Correct gear selection, therefore, is critical.

The two-position selector switch canbe used to vary braking power as roadconditions change.

The engine brake is NOT intended asthe primary brake for the vehicle, noris it an emergency brake. The enginebrake only helps the service brakes byusing pressure to slow the drivetrain.Use the service brakes for quick stops.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING!

Do not drive with frequent or con-tinuous use of the service brakes. This can overheat the brakes andresult in excessive lining wear, in-creased stopping distances, pos-sibly an accident and may lead topersonal injury. Before descendinga steep grade, shift to a lower gear, keep the vehicle speed low, andavoid continuous application to thebrakes. Failure to comply may resultin death, personal injury, equipmentor property damage.

NOTEThe longer or steeper the hill, themore important it is to use your en-gine brakes. Make maximum use ofyour engine brakes by gearing downand letting the engine brakes do thework.

If frequent use of the vehicle servicebrakes is required, it is recommendedthat a slower control speed be used byselecting a lower transmission gear.

Tips for Operation on SlickRoads

The operation of any vehicle is difficultto predict on slick roads. The first 10to 15 minutes of rainfall are the mostdangerous, as road dirt and oil mixedwith rain create a very slippery surface.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING!

Do not operate the engine brakewhen driving/operating your vehiclebobtail or with a loaded or unloadedtrailer on road surfaces with poortraction (wet, icy, or snow coveredroads) or in heavy traffic. Brakingcaused by the normal operation ofthe engine brake could cause youto lose control of the vehicle result-ing in an injury accident. Failureto comply may result in death, per-sonal injury, equipment or propertydamage.

When driving on slick roads, startwith the ON/OFF switch in the “OFF”position and the two-position selectorswitch in the "LOW" position.

If your tractor is equipped with atwin-screw rear axle, position thepower divider switch in the unlockedposition.

Remove your foot from the acceleratorpedal to make sure the vehicle willmaintain traction with the retardingpower of the engine alone.

If the vehicle drive wheels begin to skidor if there is a fishtailing motion, do notactivate the engine brakes.

If traction is maintained using theretarding power of the engine aloneand more braking power is required, switch the two-position selector switchto the "LOW" position and activatethe engine brakes by switching theON/OFF switch to the "ON" position.

If the vehicle’s drive wheels begin toskid or there is a fishtailing motion, switch the ON/OFF switch to the "OFF"position.

If traction is maintained when theengine brakes are activated and morebraking power is required, move thetwo-position selector switch to the "HI"position.

Fuel Recommendations

WARNING!

The use of diesel fuel that has beenmixed with other fuels may causean explosion. Do not mix gaso-line, alcohol, or gasohol with dieselfuel. Make sure you know your fuelsource and use the recommendeddiesel fuel as indicated in this sec-tion of the manual. Failure to complymay result in death, personal injury, equipment or property damage.

CAUTION

Dirt or water in the fuel system cancause severe damage to both thefuel pump and the fuel injectors.Due to the precise tolerances ofdiesel injection systems, it is ex-tremely important that the fuel bekept clean and free of dirt or water.Know your fuel source and makesure all steps are taken for dispens-ing or using clean fuel in your vehi-cle. Failure to comply may result inequipment or property damage.

CAUTION

Lighter fuel can reduce economy orpossibly damage fuel system com-ponents. Lighter fuels typically donot have enough lubricity elementsin the fuel to properly lubricate thefuel injection system. Be sure youfollow the fuel recommendations asindicated in this section of the man-ual. Failure to comply may result inequipment or property damage.

CAUTION

Using diesel fuels blended with lu-bricants may cause damage to yourexhaust aftertreatment system. Ser-vice intervals for aftertreatment sys-tems will be reduced. Do not usediesel fuel blended with lubricatingoil in engines equipped with an af-tertreatment system. Failure to com-ply may result in equipment or prop-erty damage.

CAUTION

Do not use high-sulfur diesel fuel asit will damage the exhaust aftertreat-ment system. Also, the engine willnot meet emission regulations. Useonly ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD)fuel. Failure to comply may result inequipment or property damage.

CAUTION

If ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel is notused, the engine may not meetemission regulations, and damagemay occur to the exhaust aftertreat-ment system. The use of high-sulfurdiesel fuel will damage the exhaustaftertreatment system and impactthe engine emission. Ultra-low-sul-fur diesel fuel is required for cor-rect operation of the aftertreatmentsystem. The engine has been opti-mized for use with an aftertreatmentsystem to meet the 2013 U.S. Envi-ronmental Protection Agency regu-lations. Failure to comply may resultin equipment or property damage.

NOTEThe engine has been optimized foruse with an aftertreatment systemtogether with ULSD fuel to meet the2013 U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) regulations.

Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel is definedas diesel fuel not exceeding 0.0015[15 ppm] mass percent sulfur content(ultra-low diesel fuel is also defined byASTM S-15). There are no acceptablesubstitutes.

PACCAR recommends the use ofASTM number 2D fuel. The use ofnumber 2 diesel fuel will result inoptimum engine performance.

At operating temperatures below 0°C[32°F], acceptable performance canbe obtained by using blends of number2D and number 1D.

The following chart lists acceptabletypes of fuels for this engine.

are acceptable.3. BTU Content/Degree API Gravity - Low API gravity fuels have a higher thermal energy content (BTU). As a general rule, there is a 3 to 5

percent decrease in BTU content for every 10 degree increase in API gravity, there is also a 0.7 degree API gravity increase with anincrease in fuel temperature. This decrease in energy content equates roughly to the same percentage of power loss. Use of fuels withhigher API gravity will cause higher than normal fuel consumption.

NOTEPACCAR recommends that thecetane number of diesel fuel be aminimum of 45 for engines that areexpected to operate at temperaturesbelow 0°C [32°F] and a minimum of42 for engines that are operated attemperatures above 0°C [32°F].

NOTEUsing diesel fuel with a lower thanrecommended cetane number cancause hard starting, instability, andexcessive white smoke. To maintainsatisfactory operation at low ambienttemperatures, it is important to spec-ify diesel fuel of the correct cetanenumber.

NOTEPACCAR requires all permissiblefuels to have adequate fuel lubric-ity. This means the BOCLE numberis 3100 or greater as measured byASTM specification D6078, Scuff-ing Load Ball On Cylinder Evaluator(SLBOCLE). Lubricity can also bemeasured by ASTM, specificationD6079, ISO 12156, High FrequencyReciprocating Rig (HFRR) in whichthe fuel must have a wear scar di-ameter of 0.45 mm [0.02 in] or less.

Lubricating OilRecommendations andSpecificationsGeneral Information

CAUTION

Extending the oil and filter changeinterval beyond the recommenda-tions will decrease the engine lifedue to factors such as corrosion, deposits, and wear. Engine oil filterscapture dirt and remove depositsfrom the oil to prolong the life of in-ternal moving components. Followthe oil and filter change intervalsas recommended in this section ofthe manual. Failure to comply mayresult in equipment or property dam-age.

The use of quality engine lubricatingoils, combined with appropriate oildrain and filter change intervals, is acritical factor in maintaining engineperformance and durability. Extendingthe oil and filter change interval beyondthe recommendations will decreaseengine life due to factors such ascorrosion, deposits, and wear. Referto “Oil Drain Intervals” on page 5-11to determine which oil drain interval touse for an application.

NOTEIt is the owners responsibility tocorrectly follow lubricating oil recom-mendations. If recommendationsare ignored, the engine warrantycould be affected.

API: American Petroleum InstituteCES: Cummins EngineeringStandard

PACCAR allows, for midrangeapplications, the use of lubricatingoils that meet or exceed CES 20078or CES 20081 with no change inoil drain interval. But, if a non-lowash lubricating oil meeting theCummins Engineering Standard(CES) classification CES 20078 isused, the service interval(s) for theaftertreatment system will be reduced.

NOTEA lubricating oil that meets theAmerican Petroleum Institute (API)performance classification CJ-4/SLmay not meet the CES 20081 re-quirement. Always make sure thelubricating oil used meets the CES20081 requirement in addition tothe API performance classificationCJ-4/SL.

PACCAR recommends the use ofhigh-quality SAE 15W-40 heavy-dutyengine oil.

The primary PACCARrecommendation is for the use of15W- 40 multigrade lubricating oilfor normal operation at ambienttemperatures above -15°C [5°F].The use of multigrade oil reducesdeposit formation, improves enginecranking in low temperature conditionsand increases engine durability bymaintaining lubrication during hightemperature operating conditions.Since multigrade oils have been shownto provide approximately 30 percentlower oil consumption compared with

monograde oils, it is important touse multigrade oils to be certain theengine will meet applicable emissionsrequirements.

Use of "synthetic engine oils" (thosemade with API group 3 or group 4base stocks) is permitted subject tothe same performance and viscositylimitations of petroleum (mineral)based engine oils. The same oilchange intervals must be appliedto synthetic oils that are applied topetroleum (mineral) based engine oils.

While the preferred viscosity grade is15W-40, lower viscosity multigrade oilscan be used in colder climates. Seethe accompanying chart. Any viscositygrade lower than 15W-40 must stillmeet CES 20081.

Synthetic engine oils, API GroupIII and Group IV basestocks, arerecommended for use in PACCAR

engines operating in ambienttemperature conditions consistentlybelow - 25°C [-13°F]. Synthetic 0W-30oils that meet the requirements of APIGroup III or Group IV basestocks, can be used in operations where theambient temperature never exceeds0°C [32°F]. Multiviscosity oils rated0W-30 do not offer the same level ofprotection against fuel dilution as dohigher multigrade oils. Higher cylinderwear can be experienced when using0W-30 oils in high-load situations.

As these oils have directionally thinneroil films than 15W-40 oils, top-qualityFleetguard® filters must be usedabove 20°C [70°F]. Some oil suppliersmight claim better fuel economy forthese oils. PACCAR can neitherapprove nor disapprove any productnot manufactured by PACCAR. Theseclaims are between the customer andoil supplier. Obtain a commitment fromthe oil supplier that the oil will give

satisfactory performance in PACCARengines or do not use the oil.

New Engine Break-In Oils

PACCAR does not approve the use ofspecial “break-in” engine lubricatingoils for new or rebuilt PACCARengines. It is recommended to usethe same lubricating oil for enginebreak-in that will be used during normaloperation.

CAUTION

A sulfated ash limit of 1.85 percenthas been placed on all engine lubri-cating oils recommended for use inPACCAR engines. Higher ash oilscan cause valve and/or piston dam-age and lead to excessive oil con-sumption. Failure to comply may re-sult in equipment damage.

CAUTION

The use of a synthetic-base oil doesnot justify extended oil change inter-vals. Extended oil change intervalscan decrease engine life due to fac-tors such as corrosion, deposits, andwear. Failure to comply may result inequipment damage.

Additional information regardinglubricating oil availability throughoutthe world is available in the EMALubricating Oils Data Book forHeavy-Duty Automotive and IndustrialEngines. The data book can beordered from: Engine ManufacturersAssociation, Two North LaSalle Street,Chicago, IL 60602; (312) 827-8733,(www.enginemanufacturers.org).

Aftermarket Oil Additive Usage

PACCAR does not recommend the useof aftermarket oil additives. Today'shigh-quality engine lubricating oilsare very sophisticated. Most oilsalready contain precise amounts ofadditives blended into the lubricatingoil to meet stringent performancerequirements. These furnished oilsmeet performance characteristicsthat conform to the lubricant industrystandards. Aftermarket lubricating oiladditives are not necessary to enhanceengine oil performance and in somecases can reduce the furnished oil'scapability to protect the engine.

Coolant Recommendationsand SpecificationsFully FormulatedCoolant/Antifreeze

The cooling system in your vehiclewas factory filled with Extended LifeCoolant (ELC) that meets or exceedsall ASTM D 6210 requirements.PACCAR recommends only using a50/50 mixture of distilled water andELC when cooling system serviceis required. A 50/50 mixture of ELCand distilled water will provide freezeprotection down to -34°F [- 36.7°C],which is adequate for most locationsin North America. For extremely coldoperating conditions, a 60/40 mixture(coolant/water ratio) can be used toprovide freeze protection down to-62°F [-52.2°C].

Good-quality water is importantfor cooling system performance.Excessive levels of calcium and

magnesium contribute to scalingproblems, and excessive levels ofchlorides and sulfates cause coolingsystem corrosion.

Water QualityCalcuim Magnesium

(hardness)Maximum 170 ppmas (CaCO3 + MgCO3)

Chloride 40 ppm as (Cl)Sulfur 100 ppm as (SO4)

Fully formulated antifreeze must bemixed with good quality water at a50/50 ratio (40- to 60-percent workingrange). A 50/50 mixture of antifreezeand water gives a -36°C [-33°F]freezing point and a 108°C [226°F]boiling point, which is adequate forlocations in North America. The actuallowest freezing point of ethylene glycolantifreeze is at 68 percent. Usinghigher concentrations of antifreeze willraise the freezing point of the solutionand increase the possibility of a silicagel problem.

PACCAR vehicle engine-coolingsystems are filled with fully formulatedextended-life coolant (ELC).

PACCAR recommends the use of fullyformulated extended life coolant thatmeets the requirements of CumminsEngineering Standard (C.E. S.) 14603for top off and service.

If the replacement coolant is ChevronTexaco, Shell Rotella or their privatelabel counterparts which do not meetthe elastomer compatibility sectionof CES 14603, the coolant must betreated by adding 0.24 liter [8oz]of liquid silicate fluid for every 45liters [12 gal] of total coolant systemvolume. It is critical to not overtreat the coolant with silicate fluid. Ifovertreatment is suspected, drain thecooling system and discard the filter.Clean the cooling system immediately.Symptoms of silicate over-treatmentcan be thickened coolant in the lowerradiator tank, water pump seal leakagesoon after silicate addition, reducedheater output and/or elevated enginetemperatures.
