12 October 2018 Welcome Back! A very warm welcome back to what promises to be a term full of events, excitement and opportunity to join in! It’s always wonderful to see that our students continue to ‘bounce in’ through the front gate full of energy and enthusiasm ready to start the term. Term 4 presents a very special term to our Year 6 students who are now in the final term of their primary education. With a very successful Student Exhibition behind them, which clearly displayed their commitment to learning and the skills and knowledge gained as members of the PYP IB world community, they are now looking forward to their graduation. In addition to Graduation, we have the Prep breakfast, Year 2 sleepover, Bike Ed for our Year 5 students, School camps for Years 3 ,4 and 5 and our Annual Carols Evening are also on the calendar for this term – ‘jam-packed’ really is an understatement! Hand Hygiene Good hand hygiene is extremely important at both home and school. With the help of the ‘Soapy Hero’ Teachers have discussed this with their students, ensuring that they are reminding the children to wash their hands thoroughly after going to the toilet and at other times throughout the day. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It would be great if this message is reiterated at home to promote good habits. I have attached a link that will take you to the Better Health Website that has some additional information for parents if you are interested. A reminder that if your child has been sick or feeling unwell please wait at least 48 hours after their last symptom before you send them back to school. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/soapy-hero Parent Opinion Survey The Parent Opinion Survey is sent out on an annual basis and gives parents the opportunity to provide commendations, considerations and feedback to the school. This year the survey was administered on-line and was sent to over three hundred families. These families were chosen randomly through a computer generated system which is managed by the Education Department and are not selected by the school. I would like to extend a huge thank-you to those families that completed the recent parent opinion survey. Your input is highly valued and I thank-you again for taking the time to provide us with your honest thoughts, considerations and feedback. Bullying- Working together to resolve concerns At KCPS we have a zero tolerance for any type of ‘bullying’ within the school. We take all concerns very seriously and dedicate time to ensure that all concerns are unpacked thoroughly and fairly. As we hope to work together with our families, when issues arise it is important that when discussing incidents or ‘bullying’ that we have a consistent understanding of what that means and the type of behavior that it entails. Below I have included some information from The Department of Education that supports us all with a clear understanding.

What is bullying? Bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological aggressive behaviour by a person or group directed towards a less powerful person or group that is intended to cause harm, distress or fear.

Types of bullying behavior There are some specific types of bullying behaviour:

verbal or written abuse - such as targeted name-calling or jokes, or displaying offensive posters violence - including threats of violence

sexual harassment - unwelcome or unreciprocated conduct of a sexual nature, which could reasonably be expected to cause offence, humiliation or intimidation

homophobia and other hostile behaviour towards students relating to gender and sexuality discrimination including racial discrimination - treating people differently because of their identity cyberbullying - either online or via mobile phone.

What is not bullying? There are also some behaviours, which, although they might be unpleasant or distressing, are not bullying:

mutual conflict - which involves a disagreement, but not an imbalance of power. Unresolved mutual conflict can develop into bullying if one of the parties targets the other repeatedly in retaliation.

single-episode acts of nastiness or physical aggression, or aggression directed towards many different people, is not bullying

social rejection or dislike is not bullying unless it involves deliberate and repeated attempts to cause distress, exclude or create dislike by others.

I would like to reiterate, if you have any concerns at all about your child please make sure that you contact your child’s teacher, an Assistant Principal or myself so that we can work with you and your child to ensure your child is feeling happy, safe and ready to learn at school. Front of the School It has been wonderful to see so many students and families enjoy our new space at the front of the school. The Amphitheatre will provide a fantastic learning environment for classes to enjoy as the weather improves over the coming weeks. Thank-you everyone for your patience throughout this process. The Green Team is excited to announce the introduction of fortnightly Nude Food Days at Kororoit Creek Primary School! ALL students will be encouraged to bring in healthy, wrapper free lunches to school for

snack and lunch.

We will be announcing the classes with the highest level participation at the alternating assemblies, as well as be

recognising individual students for their efforts.

NUDE FOOD day is a chance for our students to realise what they can do for their health and the health of the planet. An event like this can give us all at KCPS a taste of the benefits, ease and fun involved in packing a healthy, wrapper free lunch. Some suggestions on how to make your lunch a NUDE FOOD success are:

- Using plastic reusable containers for sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt.

- Bringing a re-useable drink bottle for water. - Cutting up vegetable sticks and dip! - Popping popcorn. - Packing whole pieces of fruit… and many more!

We are so excited to see the impact that NUDE FOOD lunches will have on building healthy bodies a healthy school

This month is walk to school month, we are promoting the use of active transport (walking, scooting, biking or public transport) in getting to and from school. Our Green Team captains have been learning all about why active transport is such a good thing:

It gets you active and healthy It reduces the environmental impact of the school community. Transport is the second largest cause of greenhouse gas

emissions in Australia and finding alternatives to car use is a fantastic way the school can make a difference to the environment.

It reduces the amount of traffic in and around the school. It's fun!!

The Green Team captains recently did a workshop run by Melton City Council on how to promote walking to school month and they have come up with some great ideas:

Every Friday is crazy sock day - If you use active transport to get to school you get to wear crazy socks! We are running a 'design your own shoe competition (further details can be found on compass) which closes on the 29th

of October. There will be great prizes for each year levels best shoe design! We will be collecting data each week on the number of students using active transport and using that to compare to

other schools in Victoria There is the 'walking to school bus' which allows parents to drop their children at the corner of Inglewood drive and

Arbour Blvd (across from the bus stop) where they will be met by teachers and they can walk to school together. We will be have a breakfast at the end of the month for all participating students.

Slushie Maker Cup Zoom Flying Disk A huge Thank You to all of our parent volunteers who process the students banking each week. For every deposit made at school students receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for exclusive School Banking reward items in recognition of their regular savings habits. There are two new items released each term so be sure to keep an eye out for them! Thank you for supporting the School Banking program and remember, School Banking day is every Wednesday.

Hi parents and carers,

Just an update for the whole school Camp Quality Incursion. Due to unforeseen

circumstances, the incursion will now be occurring on the 20th of November.

Many families within our school community have been affected by Cancer and as you

may know, we have a student who is currently undergoing treatment.

Camp Quality provide Primary School Education program that uses vivacious and

loveable puppets, Kylie, Dean and Melissa to help support children affected by cancer.

This program has been in operation since 1988 and shares an interactive and engaging

narrative that explains:

• The ins and outs of cancer • Why their peer who has undergone treatment may look a little different (due to the side

effects of chemotherapy) • Why it’s important to be supportive of their classmate who is either living with cancer or

has a diagnosed parent or sibling • That cancer isn’t contagious, so it’s ok to play • The importance of positivity and recognising our own strengths

This live, educational performance will also focuses on optimism, friendship and

tolerance.

The incursion will occur at no cost to the school, parents or students and is a great

opportunity for our students to learn how to create a supportive school community for

their peers who may be affected by cancer.

Following the performance, students are encouraged to ask questions and share their

concerns. If any concerns arise after the performance, please feel free to contact Camp

Quality or see one of the Assistant Principals.
