A Step Back In Time

With The Historical Society

Feb 27 1931

The Joe Blake’s Waterloo

A three-foot tiger snake was killed last Sunday night by

Mr. Jack Collins on the lawn of Dr. Hands' residence (Now

owned by Heather & Mike Moore) The continued barking

of the watch dog attracted Mr. Collins to the spot, and the

coupde grace was quickly administered. Only a few weeks

ago a tiger snake was killed just after midnight at about the

same spot.

February 1 1924

From Candle, Lanterns to Electricity

The Butter Factory. The remodelling and additions to the

plant are just about complete and are an immense

Improvement on the old works. It is intended to have a

formal opening in the course of a few weeks. There

appears to be opening a period of progress in the affairs of

the Company and a number of township business people

and other residents would be pleased to see the Company

progress in the electricity business. It is suggested that this

might be accomplished by the issue of some of the non

allotted shares, the authorized capital being £3,000, of

which less than £1,000 has been issued. This is one of the

avenues by which a great stride can be made forward.

In the town are ten separate power units, apart from the

factory, three of which are used to give electric light, a

wasteful system for a small community and one which

would be obviated by the establishment of a central station.

This, with lighting gives assurance of profit.

April 24 1931

Car Accidents

Mr. Jack Hassett had the great misfortune to lose his single

-seater Morris-Cowley car last Saturday morning. He was

out a little distance from Pyramid when he scented

something burning and stopped the car to investigate when

flames burst out and quickly reduced the trim little car to

ruins. A short circuit was probably the cause of the trouble.

The car was insured, but not for anything like its full value.

The accident had an amusing sequel we are told. A young

lady returning to Pyramid from her home at Mincha passed the car remains on the roadside, and perceived a pair of

trousers hanging on the fence. Immediately on arrival she rushed into the boarding house and excitedly asked: "Has anybody seen Jack Hassett? His car is burnt and his

trousers are hanging on the fence!" It appears that Jack had rushed with the spare pants to a nearby channel with the

hope that with its aid he might be able to beat out the flames.

MAYORAL COLUMN

Honour To Be Re-Elected

It was a great honour to be formally re-elected as Mayor of Loddon Shire Council at the Statutory Meeting on Friday 16 November.

I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for electing me to the role for a further 12 months. I look forward to working with Council, its staff and the community over the next year towards further improving the liveability of our Shire. This includes through advocacy to our governments (State and Federal), as well as continuing to work with our neighbouring councils towards common goals.

National Ag Day

Wednesday 21 November is National Agriculture Day. This year, National Ag Day is celebrating the good that our farmers do each year.

As we know, agriculture is the major industry (and our largest employer) in the Loddon Shire, and contributes to the state’s and our nation’s overall agricultural outputs. According to the National Farmers Federation, scientific advancements have seen agriculture feed more people, more sustainably with every passing year. As a result, we in Australia enjoy food that is safe, affordable and nutritious, while also wearing some of the world’s most popular natural fibres. The National Farmers Federation #GrowForGood campaign for National Ag Day is an opportunity to consider how agriculture makes the world a better place. To find out more, visit www.agday.org.au.

Rural Financial Counselling Service

Having previously mentioned the availability of drought preparedness and support in a past column, I would also like to remind our community about Rural Financial Counselling Service Victoria North West.

The organisation offers a free financial counselling service for farmers and small farm businesses in North West Victoria. Its financial counsellors can work with you to provide information and develop options, while you make the decisions. Counsellors can meet with you on your farm, at your business, or elsewhere if required. The service is free and independent, and confidentiality is assured. Rural Financial Counselling Service can be contacted on 1300 769 489 or visit their website www.sunrcs.com.au

Pyramid Hill Lawn Bowling Club News Midweek Pennant A friendly reminder that we are on an enforced break for Mid-week Pennant until 28th November when Division 1 will play Kerang Golf at home and Division 2 will host Leitchville.

60 & Over The chooks were all safely locked away in their coops for the week as the 60 & Over guys rested on their laurels. A profound thought about how they may have filled the gaping hole left by no bowls on Thursday: Men don't care what's on TV. They only care what else is on TV.

Saturday Pennant We roll up again this Saturday 24th November with both Divisions hosting Gunbower. It is planned to hold a bbq following the match to allow the opportunity for further social interaction with our Gunbower friends.

Something to Ponder Let’s face it … life is too short to dwell on our bowling wins and losses, so here are a few things of little or no importance to ponder: Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they just stale bread to begin with? Why is the cure for insomnia to get more sleep? If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners depressed? Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavour, while dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons? Why don't we ever see this headline: Psychic Wins Lottery? Why don’t pet food manufacturers produce mouse flavoured cat food? Who tastes dog food when it has a 'new & improved' flavour?

Social News Dinner at the Victoria Hotel: Fourteen folk enjoyed the food and the company of Wednesday night. It was a time of relaxation and good interaction. Thanks for the beautiful dinners of plates copiously brimming, Deb. Mayoral Dinner: Congratulations to Cheryl McKinnon on being re-elected for a second term to the position of Mayor of the Loddon Shire. You carry out your role professionally and dutifully. Your community is very proud of you and appreciate the work you do for our local area. Thanks to all bowlers who contributed to making the Civic Reception so successful.

The Moustache Thief

Good grief, good grief The Moustache Thief Is causing a sensation

You’ll see many a hairless lip On your next trip

To the policing station

He plucks and he plunders Every ‘tache in town

So there’s no hair there When their owners look down

Horseshoes and handlebars Pencils and the walrus

Are disappearing everywhere From Birmingham to Belarus

But the Moustache Thief

Is a lot nearer

Than all the police supposes

And if they looked closer

They’d find him

Underneath their noses!

Work Experience 2018

My name is Olivia Hampson.

I did work experience at St. Monica’s

Primary School, Kangaroo Flat.

My boss’s name was Max Lamb.

These are the main tasks I did helping

children with literacy, maths, reading ect.

Yard duty, went on excursions and ran

learning groups.

Working here made me feel like a real

adult, being treated like a real part of the

workplace.

My favourite part of Work Experience was

interacting with children of all different

ages and seeing the different levels of

learning.

The things I learnt were that different ages

of kids can be very difficult and that every

child is unique and a school is a very busy workplace.

I’d like to thank my boss for making me feel so welcome and not throwing me into any

difficult situations.

In the future I see myself working as maybe a teacher but I am leaning towards being a nurse or a midwife.

My name is EJ Fernandez

I did work experience at Filipino Store in

Pyramid Hill.

My boss’s name was Mark Lacey.

These are the main tasks I did cleaning,

serving, stocking and fronting up.

My favourite part of Work Experience was

serving people and failing at the cashier

and learning what I did wrong.

The things I learnt were to put stuff back

carefully and where they are meant to be

and also to not panic when I make a

mistake when serving.

I’d like to thank my boss for teaching me

things about the food/marketing industry.

In the future I see myself working as not in the market industry but maybe something to do with sport.

The U.F.O Has Landed!

On Saturday the 17th of November UFO held their launch party in Kelly Park. It was

great to see so many people coming together to celebrate with the United Filipino

Organization. There was delicious food, dancing, raffles with the major prize being

return flights to the Philippines, singing and live music. A fantastic night was had by

all. Thank You, U.F.O, for hosting such a fun community event!
