There was a lot of excitement and nervous energy as the girls arrived at Mitiamo for the 2014 grand final. Pyramid were taking on Marong for the third year running. The Pyramid girls came out firing from the very first whistle to almost blow Marong off the court. Our shooters made it look easy with lots of quick passing within the ring. They didn't miss any opportunities to score, finding the ring with accurate shooting. Despite our defenders being outsized, they made the Marong girls work overtime. This, combined with lots of mid court pressure, meant Marong found it difficult to bring the ball into their attacking end. The girls couldn't have hoped for a better start with a 10 goal lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second and third quarters, Marong found some form and managed to narrow the margin. Em called an injury time in the third. Some quick thinking by the coaches saw a shuffle of positions and the momentum swung back in our favour. In the final quarter the girls took control again. It was a fast, high scoring game with a wonderful display of skills. The Pyramid girls finished the game with a convincing win to claim the 2014 premiership. Congratulations girls - your coaches, the club and your families are proud of your success. Best on court- Morgan Dingwall. Pyramid Hill Netball Club congratulate these girls on their convincing 11 goal win to bring home the ultimate prize for this age team for the third year in a row.
The Score - Pyramid Hill 59 defeated Marong 48
The Coaches - Gemma Scott & Gabby Kennedy The Team - Morgan Dingwall, Abbey Dingwall, Megan Gunther (Captain), Tess Hampson, Rebecca Kellett, Jasmine Lacey, Emily Stewart, Olivia Webb, Teagan Stewart

A goal on the siren to Calivil restoring the margin back to 18 points at half time. The boys definitely felt they had worked their way into the game as coaches Fawcett and Scott encouraged the boys to keep persisting. The 3rd Q was a tale of missed opportu-nities as the boys started to become frustrated some undisciplined play lead to a critical goal for Calivil then another goal on the siren had the margin out 26 points at the last change, not great but a manageable situation given that we had boys that having played senior football were expected to finish the game full of
running.
In the last Q while the boys were doing well around the ground they had trouble penetrating the team defence of Calivil who had started to drop numbers behind the ball to preserve their well earned lead. Two goals each for the quarter left our boys ruing a lacklustre first Q with the final margin 22 points. Football Club Grand
Final Report Grand final day at Mitiamo with the U 17 footballers and Netballers once again flying the Bulldog flag. The boys were out to defend their title from last season while the girls were chasing a three peat. The young bulldog pups were on the back foot from the outset as a more ferocious and aggressive Calivil team applied immense pressure on our key midfielders. The undersized defence were working overtime as the game was mostly played in the Calivil forward 50, at Q time the margin was 18 points in arrears.
In the 2nd Q Pyramid started winning
the ball around the stoppages as
Nash started to get on top in the
ruck. Pyramid was able to gain
many entries into the forward 50
with a strong marking Fitzy
converting 3 goals for the Q.

Mitchell Dingwall, tried to lift his team after Q time from CHF and in the centre Bakery Cafe Nathan Fitzpatrick, was a colossus up forward continual-ly presenting and taking big marks. 5 goals out of 7 Coffee Bank Justin Moon, worked hard down back, a line breaking run in the 2ndQ resulted in a goal While it is disappointing for the boys to go down in the big dance, we have seen improvement all over the field and with continued hard work and dedication this team will form the backbone of future Pyramid Hill senior teams. Well done to coaches Matthew and Brad for their enthusiasm throughout the year. The clubs AGM is coming up soon watch the press for dates. Members of the community are encouraged to consider getting involved. The club exists for the community of Pyramid Hill and surrounding district. Well done to the U 17 Netballers on winning the grand final, once again in emphatic style. 3 years in a row.
With the local footy finished for the
year we can now turn our attention to
the Mighty HAWKS in the AFL.

More District History Part 31—By Ern Ferris
Many folk had stories about the dust, Dave Burke recalled hurrying to milk the cow but the storm beat him and he had to feel along the cow to release the bail after milking and then turn for the house. The milk was all mud when he arrived and visibility in the house was arms length The above dust storm was followed by another on Boxing Night which stopped all traffic for a time. This dust storm early caught folk going home from school. The teacher at Sylvaterre School, Miss Fordyce, was boarding at the home of Mr & Mrs Alf Ferris. a few miles from the school and walked to and from school. One dust storm she commenced to walk home to Ferris’ place and the dust was so dense she turned the wrong way and when Ferris’ went looking for her, found her sitting on the edge of the road in tears. Another student attending Mitiamo School was picked up by her father with his horse and gig. The dust storm overtook them so they turned away from the wind and sat it out. Another dust story is from Helen Stevens who says when she was too young for school and was out with her father feeding sheep when he looked at the sky and said we better hurry home because a dust storm was coming. We got inside just as it hit. We soon had to move from the kitchen area at the back of the house as the dust was pouring in through the vents and cracks although the doors and windows were shut. We moved to a bedroom and waited till the storm was over. I shall never forget the scene that awaited us in the back part of the house. The tea towel hanging on the rail was covered in dust and looked like a sugar bag. The sink, cupboards, table and chairs were covered in a thick covering of dust. For years after the west side of fences were piled up with fine dust.
Dust storm, February 7. 1945 It is generally conceded that Tuesday’s dust storm was the worst ever, even eclipsing the one in December when total chaos reigned for a few minutes. On this occasion the turn of the wind came more violently and raged fiercer and longer, even lodging indoors in greater quantity than ever known before. Fortunately the high wind caused no serious damage. The rain shower measured only 15 points, but streaks of mud mucked up the house exteriors making them unsightly in appearance. Rainfall Records. On January 24, 1945 it was reported that 1944 was not the driest year on record. Last year was not the driest on record since observations were commenced by the Metrological Bureau at Pyramid Hill. At Pyramid Hill in 1889 there have been three drier years. The years under 10 inches rainfall are :-- 1895, 1896, 1697, 1898, 1901, 1902 when the average would have been around 6 inches. But what made 1944 the worst year on record, from an agricultur-al point of view, was the extremely low rainfall during the four critical months of June, July, August and September, associated with heavy frosts throughout June and July. The wettest year was 1890 when 223 inches fell. Droughts January 24, 1945. The Pyramid Hill Advertiser reported huge cracks in the earth and the Herald reported that at Pyramid Hill the sheep must be constantly shepherded as their feet are catching in the cracks. Sheep are being droved along roads, as the grass is very scarce. Bad Harvest January 31, 1945. No grain of any sort has been lodged at Pyramid Hill railway station from district farms this season, the second successive e season of practically a total failure outside the irrigation area. We hear of a Sylvaterre farmer garnering N0 bags, and another getting one bag after a day’s stripping. Some nice little crops are grown on irrigation blocks, and mostly all were cut for hay.

Sunday 12 October, 12.30pm –
4.30pm. The day will feature Andrew Lang from the World Bioenergy Association. Andrew will present on his experience in family-owned forestry and the many biomass-to-energy options available from farm forestry. These include NZ and Victorian examples of the production of heat and electricity from chipped farm forestry harvest residues, thinnings, or woody weeds. Ben Boxshall from wood4good will provide an on-site silviculture demonstra-tion encompassing productivity, stocking and coppicing and the subsequent wood product uses. This on-site demonstration will showcase some tools and techniques for farm forestry maintenance. Phil Dyson, Northern United Forestry Group member and geologist, will examine the below ground benefits of farm forestry observed at the Kamarooka demo site, particularly its effect on water tables and salinity. “If you’ve ever thought about getting into farm forestry, or brushing up on the newer aspects and innovations, this is the perfect opportunity to do so, with experts on hand to answer your questions” said Anthony Gallacher, Landcare Facilitator of the Loddon Plains Landcare Network. To RSVP or for more information, contact Anthony Gallacher on 0447 095 501 or email [email protected].
