Why Technical Apprenticeships?

Need to bring young people in to health care and develop effectively into new roles, career pathways. Admin and HCSW well catered for.

Gaps in provision locally for apprenticeships in Pathology and Pharmacy identified in 2013.

– Anticipated benefits Keen motivated, flexible support staff, improve competence/knowledge base of workforce Promote PHT as a great place to work and learn Salary cost savings could be re-invested into further workforce development

In 2014 in other technical areas, need identified from service eg Audiology, Medical Equipment Library, Imaging, NICU

Alice’s story

Alice was in our first cohort of level 2 Apprentices in the Blood Sciences lab

“I didn’t know what to expect before starting, this was a whole new area of learning, I had enjoyed science at school and college, and was excited about what I was going to be learning from the apprenticeship.”

Alice has now completed her level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships and is employed as a Trainee Associate Practitioner, currently undertaking the Bridging the Gap study skills course and will start the Southampton Solent University Foundation Degree as a Higher Apprentice in Jan 2016.

“I have enjoyed working on the apprenticeship and I have gained knowledge and experience with in a subject area. I’m glad I have chosen this pathway and I know it will be one that I stay in and progress further”. Alice would like to progress further and undertake a Biomedical Science Degree and is looking beyond even this, she tells me she would like to do a PhD eventually.

A Manager’s Perspective

“We have seen more opportunity for progression from Apprentice to higher grades, (band 3 support workers & Pre-registration Trainee Technician). Retention has improved, we also feel that the knowledge and skills of leavers into community Pharmacy will be improved and there is the potential to attract these individuals back after community experience as Trainee Technicians so both acute and community care benefits”.

“Our apprentices receive both the BTEC and NVQ qualification, this goes beyond our professional body guidance, involves more rotation, and produces staff who are much more knowledgeable and flexible, this will translate to a safer service to our patients”.

“I was very sceptical about taking apprentices at first but I now see them as a valuable future resource, we have already seen individuals progress to Assistant Practitioner posts, this bodes well for the future. Staff retention, motivation and quality has improved significantly in our busy sample handling area”.

Further Development

Introduce further specialist qualifications and apprenticeships where it is both cost and quality effective to do so.

– New Pharmacy level 2,3 and 4 qualifications/Apprenticeships

– New Health Care Science level 2,3 and perhaps 4 qualifications/Apprenticeship frameworks across the HCS/ Technical workforce

Expand provision to external sites where there is demand

Further Foundation Degree specialist pathways

– Potential for Genetics, genomics, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Molecular Pathology, Research support, Further modalities of Imaging, Pharmacy, Clinician’s Associate.
