MURRAY, DJOKOVIC ONE WIN AWAY FROM HISTORIC DOHA FINAL

The Top 2 players in the Emirates ATP Rankings have never met at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, so Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic could make history in the tournament’s 25th year. First, Murray must extend his 27-match win streak by beating No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych in Friday’s semi-finals. Murray has swept six straight meetings and 14 straight sets against the World No. 10.

Djokovic also meets a familiar foe Friday in Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Neither player has lost a set this week, with the defending champion Djokovic increasing his Doha set streak to 16. Verdasco has suffered seven straight losses against Top 2 opponents, including a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Djokovic last year in Doha. Likewise, Berdych has lost 13 consecutive matches against World No. 1s.

In the doubles final, No. 3 seeds Vasek Pospisil and Radek Stepanek face Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin. The two teams took different paths to the championship match. Pospisil and Stepanek received a walkover from Verdasco and Nicolas Almagro on Thursday, while Chardy and Martin upset year-end No. 1s Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 7-6(3), 7-6(6).

AGELESS KARLOVIC, STEPANEK JOIN MURRAY, DJOKOVIC IN QFS

Born three months apart in the 1970s, No. 6 seed Ivo Karlovic and qualifier Radek Stepanek have defied their age at the 2017 Qatar ExxonMobil Open. Karlovic, 37, has not dropped a set despite not earning a break point in Doha this week. He opens play Thursday against Fernando Verdasco. Stepanek, 38, looks to end his 11-match losing streak against World No. 2 Novak Djokovic.

o Karlovic is the oldest Top 20 player since 43-year-old Ken Rosewall on July 31, 1978. o The Croat won two ATP World Tour titles in 2016 to become the oldest champion since

37-year-old Marty Riessen won 1979 Lafayette. Karlovic was 5 months old at that time. o Stepanek is the oldest ATP quarter-finalist since Jimmy Connors, 42, at 1995 Halle

and bids to become the oldest semi-finalist since Connors, 40, at 1993 San Francisco. o The last player older to win an ATP match was Younes El Aynaoui, 38, at 2010 Doha.

After Karlovic and Stepanek take to Centre Court, World No. 1 Andy Murray puts his career-long 26-match win streak on the line against Nicolas Almagro of Spain. During his unbeaten run, Murray has defeated 23 different players from 17 countries, highlighted by 13 wins against Top 20 opponents. He is 53-6 in sets since September 18, sweeping 24 straight sets to begin his streak.

In the last quarter-final match of the day, No. 3 seed and World No. 10 Tomas Berdych meets No. 5 seed and World No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Both men have competed in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open championship match, but only one can return to Saturday’s final. Tsonga defeated Gael Monfils to win the 2012 Doha title, while Berdych fell to David Ferrer in the final three years later.

PAST CHAMPS MURRAY, DJOKOVIC, TSONGA ON CENTRE COURT

A star-studded, second-round schedule awaits fans at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Wednesday, featuring World No. 1 Andy Murray. The two-time Doha champion is on a career-long 25-match win streak. Murray meets Gerald Melzer in a match-up of little brothers. Melzer’s older bro Jurgen is a former World No. 8, while Murray’s older sibling Jamie reached No. 1 in doubles last season.

Also in action on Centre Court are defending Doha champion Novak Djokovic and 2012 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Both players are 8-1 lifetime at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, with Tsonga making his first appearance since defeating Gael Monfils in the final five years ago. Murray vs. Melzer, Djokovic vs. Horacio Zeballos and Tsonga vs. Dustin Brown are all first-time match-ups.

Czechs Tomas Berdych and Jiri Vesely meet on Court 1 in a rematch from Wimbledon, where Berdych won on his eighth match point. Their countryman, 38-year-old Radek Stepanek, is the oldest player to win a match since Younes El Aynaoui at 2010 Doha. If he beats Arthur De Greef on Court 2, Stepanek will be the oldest quarter-finalist since Jimmy Connors, 42, at 1995 Halle.

QATAR EXXONMOBIL OPEN TALKING POINTS

TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: The 25th edition of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open is led by World No. 1 Andy Murray and No. 2 Novak Djokovic. Murray, who won back-to-back titles in 2008-09, is one of three former champions in the field. Djokovic is the reigning champ. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the No. 5, is making his first appearance in Doha since winning the title in 2012. Here is a look at the other seeds: No. 3 Tomas Berdych, No. 4 David Goffin, No. 5 Tsonga, No. 6 Ivo Karlovic, No. 7 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis.

TOP TWO IN DOHA: This is the first time the top two players in the Emirates ATP Rankings are

appearing in Doha since 2011 when No. 1 Nadal reached the semi-finals and No. 2 Federer won the title. The No. 1 and No. 2 players also appeared in Doha in 2010 when No. 1 Federer reached the semis and No. 2 Nadal advanced to the final. In 2009, No. 1 Nadal advanced to the quarter-finals and No. 2 Federer reached the semi-finals.

DAY 1 PREVIEW: It’s a busy opening day at the 2017 Qatar ExxonMobil Open as there are nine singles and three doubles matches on the schedule.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR… In the opening match on Centre Court, World No. 1 Andy Murray teams up with Mariusz

Fyrstenberg for the first time as they meet David Marrero and Nenad Zimonjic. This is the fifth time he’s playing doubles in Doha. His best result was the SFs with brother Jamie in 2007.

In the first of three singles matches on Centre Court, reigning champion Djokovic plays German Jan-Lennard Struff for the first time. Djokovic has won 13 matches in a row against Germans since losing to Tommy Haas in the 4R at 2013 ATP Masters 1000 Miami. In the next match on, No. 4 seed David Goffin makes his Doha debut against No. 1 Dutchman Robin Haase. In the final match, Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil takes on Fernando Verdasco for the first time.

There are six singles matches on outside courts, including No. 8 seed Marcos Baghdatis against qualifier Radek Stepanek, who is playing his first singles match in Doha since 2004. The 38-year-old Stepanek is the oldest player in the singles draw. Baghdatis is also making his first Doha appearance since 2007 when he reached the quarter-finals (l. to Soderling).

MURRAY IN DOHA: Murray is making his first appearance in Doha since 2014 when he lost in the

2R (l. to F. Mayer), his earliest exit in four visits. He has a 15-2 career record, reaching the final in his 2007 debut (l. to Ljubicic) and winning back-to-back titles in 2008 (d. Wawrinka) and 2009 (d. Roddick). Murray closed last season by winning his last five tournaments (nine overall in 2016), capped by finishing No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings with his win over Djokovic in the ATP Finals in London. He compiled a 23-1 record last season as the top seed, winning four of five finals.
