As the fuel prices has been rising recently, the question is how to get better fuel mileage. If you want to know how to improve fuel economy, aim for the obvious in your fuel con-sumption habits and be willing to try

what you haven’t tried. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

1: Tire inflationIt is an old saw but you would be amazed how

many of us overlook this one. Tire pressure must be checked once a month. Most of us check it once a year and only if we see a bulging sidewall. Tire pressure must be maintained for fuel economy, and also for your safety. The latest thing is to inflate tires with nitrogen, which runs cooler and main-tains pressure better than air. Checking tire pressure periodically when filling up is a good habit to develop.

2: Modify driving habitsWe’ve heard this one before, too, yet it applies

now more than ever. Drive like there’s an egg between your foot and the accelerator. Drive with a light throttle, and do your best to stay in over-drive or final drive once you get rolling.

Other fuel economy driving tips include aiming for the smoothest pavement, which requires less power. Consolidate errands and take the UPS approach to planning each journey to the letter. Are you a left foot braker? Left foot brakers tend to ride the brake pedal while accelerating. Maintain a steady throttle and make finite adjustments to power.

3: Ignition timingIgnition timing is always the subject of debate

when it comes to both power and fuel efficiency. For optimum efficiency, you want ignition timing just shy of spark knock, where you achieve peak power and efficiency. You want to allow enough room for poor fuel quality and hot/high-load con-ditions, yet push the ignition timing as far as you can without doing engine damage.

4: Clean air filterThis one makes a lot of people sigh, but it

remains an aspect of maintenance we don’t check often enough. And if you live in the dusty and dry Southwest, air filters should be inspected frequently (monthly), when you check tire pressure.

5: Sensors inspected and replacedElectronic engine control (EEC) sensors are the

nerve endings of your fuel injection and ignition systems. Without them, your engine’s computer cannot do its job properly, if it can be done at all. Sensors include coolant temperature, intake air temperature, mass-air flow, throttle position, oxygen (O2), crank trigger, cam triggers, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), manifold air pressure, evaporative emissions canister purge, and auto-matic transmission. Each of these sensors provides input the electronic engine control needs to provide proper engine function. Every 100,000 miles have all electronic engine control sensors checked and, if necessary, replaced for optimum performance and fuel economy. Follow your manufacturer’s recommendation.

6: Clean fuel injectorsOh the endless debate addressing fuel injector

cleaning and replacement. It is true fuel injectors can live indefinitely. Even the most neglected fuel injectors still perform valiantly because fuel injectors are largely self-cleaning. They rotate as they open and close, which cleans the needle and seat. And unless your automaker suggests injector cleaning, forget it. If you feel like you must replace fuel injectors, do it every 100,000 miles and sleep peacefully.

7: Own an older car? Install overdriveIf you own an older collectible car, especially

one of the classic muscle cars, and desire better fuel economy for extended cruising, consider installing overdrive. There are complete turnkey manual five- and six-speed overdrive packages available. Bolt-on overdrive packages for a variety of vintage manual and automatic transmissions are available in the market. These are stealthy over-drive systems you can install in a classic car and no one will know they are there but you. When in overdrive, your car will sip fuel rather than gulp it.

8: Get a dynamometer tuneSome car buffs visit dynamometer (dyno) shops

all the time for real-world dyno tune performance in their quest for power. But did you know a custom dyno tune can also improve fuel economy? The key is to communicate what you want from the dyno tune. By recalibrating fuel and spark curves, fuel economy can improve along with power. What’s more, a good dyno shop can also find trouble items that require attention, such as O2 sensors,

malfunctioning fuel injectors, a misfire and more. Do be sure that the work is done properly and that it doesn’t void your manufacturer’s warranty.

9: Sticking EGR valveThe EGR valve gets very little notice until it fails.

And when it fails, it can cause a rough idle or an engine that won’t idle at all. The EGR valve cycles open and closed based on throttle movement and intake manifold vacuum to reduce exhaust emis-sions. If it sticks open due to carbon deposits and heat distortion, it creates a vacuum leak and rough operation. This will adversely affect fuel economy. Check your manufacturer’s recommendation for replacing the EGR valve.

10: Evaporative emissionsYour vehicle’s evaporative emissions control

system indirectly affects engine function and fuel economy. The evaporative emissions system con-sists of vacuum hoses, a charcoal canister, and purge solenoids. The job of evaporative emissions is to trap fuel vapors in the tank and route them to the engine to be burned. With time and use, hoses become dry-rotted, the canister becomes contaminated, and purge solenoids can quit. If your vehicle has over 100,000 miles, check these parts and follow your manufac-turer’s recommendation. You can replace 100 percent of the evaporative emissions system every 100,000 miles. This is the environmentally responsible thing to do and it will indirectly help fuel economy.

11: Fresh spark plugsThe “100,000 miles between scheduled tune-

ups…” manufacturer’s claim has made us negligent. We believe automobiles are maintenance free aside from worn brake pads, tires, shock absorbers and filters. However, spark plugs should be replaced every 50,000 miles. Oh sure, you can get away with 100,000 miles and even more on a set of platinum tip spark plugs. However, as high-energy ignition systems hammer away on the cross elec-trodes, the gap gets wider and the spark less con-sistent and intense. Get yourself a fresh set of spark plugs for better mileage. And while you’re at it, check your coils and ignition harness.

12: Vacuum leaksVacuum leaks are easily one of the most

overlooked malfunctions because we tend to think the worst and miss stray suckage completely. Often-times, vacuum leaks defy detection. Because so many operations beneath the hood depend on intake manifold vacuum, there are seemingly miles and miles of vacuum hoses from bumper to bumper. Vacuum hoses dry rot, as do tees and other unions. And when they do, they create vacuum leaks, which can upset the electronic engine control system. O2 sensors pick up on lean conditions and enrich the mixture to compensate. You get a rough or unu-sually high idle and less power. The result is poor fuel economy.

13: Fuel pressure regulatorFuel pressure regulators are typically life-of-

the-vehicle components, but they can fail. Check your manufacturer’s recommendation, but it’s a good idea to change them every 100,000 miles to keep fuel pressure in the ball park and your vehicle on the road. A failed fuel pressure regulator can cause either too much fuel pressure or none. Too much means high fuel consumption and poor performance.

14: Ignition coils and harnessesAgain, we often hear the “100,000 miles

between scheduled tune-ups” recommendation. High-energy ignition systems and sizzling underhood temperatures, however, take a toll on ignition components. Coil-on-plug ignition systems have virtually eliminated ignition wires. However, there remain a lot of conventional coil pack and distributor ignition systems. When you change spark plugs, consider checking and, if necessary, changing ignition wires and coils while you’re in there. This keeps your entire ignition system fresh and on top of the business of ignition. As usual, check your manufacturer’s recommendation.

15: Crankcase ventilationMost never consider the positive crankcase ven-

tilation (PCV) valve in the same thought process as fuel economy, but it can have an effect. Every time you change your oil, check PCV valve function. With the engine at idle, pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover and check it for vacuum. The PCV valve keeps your engine’s crankcase ventilated and free of moisture and other contaminants. It can also be a huge vacuum leak source.

16: Fuel capAn unsecured fuel filler cap will get you a Check

Engine light on most late model vehicles. It will also cost you fuel economy because fuel has a high evaporation rate. A loose filler cap allows fuel vapors to escape, also causing the evaporative emissions system to malfunction.

17: Fans and fuel economyCooling fans can either enhance fuel economy

or torpedo it completely. Inflexible steel fans rob you of power and fuel economy. The most efficient engine-driven cooling fan is the thermostatic clutch fan. It engages and functions when it is needed and freewheels when it isn’t needed. Electric thermo-static cooling fans remain the single greatest path to fuel economy. If you choose and size yours properly, you can get better cooling and improved fuel economy.

18: Still fooling with points? If you drive a classic car and are still cruising

the interstate with breaker points, you’re burning excessive amounts of fuel. The Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition conversion installs in 30 minutes and improves both drivability and fuel economy. Every time a spark plug misfires, it is precious fuel lost out the tailpipe. The Ignitor virtually eliminates misfire.

19: Live without air conditioningWhen temperatures make the thermometer

red, run your vehicle’s air conditioning. However, we’ve gotten soft. Motorists run air conditioning even when temperatures are in the pleasant 70s because we like things constant. When tempera-tures fall into the 70s and even 80s, resist the urge to run air conditioning. If you have an older car with a big heavy piston compressor, consider changing over to a rotary cam plate-style Sanden compressor from Classic Auto Air, which is more efficient.

20: Friction reduction = fuel economyEngine technology has brought us great after-

market components that reduce internal friction, free up power and improve fuel economy. Roller camshaft and rocker arm technology improve fuel economy because they greatly reduce internal friction. If you take this logic even further with needle cam bearings and thrusts, you reduce friction even further. More generous piston to cyl-inder wall and bearing clearances will improve fuel economy, but pose some risk of premature wear.

21: Bolt-on electronic fuel injectionThe aftermarket has brought us a wealth of

great bolt-on technology for classic muscle cars. Enterprising companies like Edelbrock, Holley, and a host of others bring us electronic throttle body fuel injection that bolts in place of a carburetor. And if you install it properly, it can be stealthy so no one knows it is there but you.

22: Synthetic lubricantsSynthetic lubricants such as Mobil 1 motor oil

can provide better protection and performance than conventional motor oils. They also provide superior lubrication to moving parts, which can help those parts last longer. And because of their durability, you can drive a greater distance between oil changes. Synthetic lubrication improves fuel economy and frees up power.

23: Front-end alignmentProper front-end alignment isn’t just about

drivability. It’s also about rolling resistance and fuel economy. If your tires in all four corners are fighting with the pavement because they aren’t tracking properly, you’re not only buying more fuel, you are sacrificing tire life. Overall rule of thumb with front-end alignment is a pinch of neg-ative camber for good cornering and a pinch of toe-in for a good return to center after you turn a corner. If you are fighting the wheel, your tires are battling the pavement and consuming fuel.

24: Blocked catalytic convertersIf performance is floundering and fuel con-

sumption is up, chances are good that catalytic con-verters are blocked. Check with a reputable exhaust/smog shop and have your ‘cats’ checked for proper flow. Fuel economy gets lost via a clogged exhaust system.

25: Poor brake adjustmentBrakes adjusted too tightly (drum brakes only)

will slow you down and consume more fuel. You want light shoe drag, but not so tight that they get hot, causing you to burn more fuel — and brake linings.

When Benjamin Jacob stops his new scooter at traffic lights in Malay-sia’s capital, fellow drivers some-times flash their lights or honk their horns at him, though he has

done nothing wrong. With his silent electric motorcycle, other users

of Kuala Lumpur’s congested roads wrongfully assume the 29-year-old has turned off his engine or fallen asleep at the wheel.

But the delivery driver is always alert - espe-cially since he was picked to take part in a new electric-vehicle pilot project run by logistics giant DHL eCommerce.

When drivers beep at him or wind down their windows, Jacob lets them know he rides an electric bike that makes no sound.

Parcel delivery firm DHL eCommerce is testing electric vehicles in Malaysia and Vietnam for a year as it works towards a goal of cutting its logistics-related greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.

As well as helping companies boost their green credentials, electric vehicles ease air pollution and can reduce a country’s costly oil imports.

If the electricity that powers them is from renewable sources, they can also help meet the emissions reduction targets submitted by govern-ments for the 2015 Paris Agreement to curb climate change.

Cities in the Asia-Pacific region have seen unprecedented growth over the last two decades. Many face air pollution crises, crippling congestion and other challenges related to mobility and infrastructure.

Tackling noise pollution is also becoming increasingly important to improve the wellbeing of residents.

The DHL project is rare in Asia, which experts say lags other regions in creating the right incen-tives, regulatory frameworks and infrastructure needed to make electric vehicles more attractive to both drivers and businesses.

At first, DHL wanted to pilot the project in three countries, but regulatory issues and limited avail-ability of e-bikes in Thailand prevented it from launching there, it said.

Globally, the group hopes to replace 70 percent of all the vehicles it uses for “first and last-mile” delivery services with cleaner energy versions by 2025.

“After one year, we will see which bike does the best and how practical it is to scale up and look at more fleet joining us,” Anil Gautam, managing director for DHL eCommerce Malaysia, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Right SignalsAround the world, electric and plug-in hybrid

cars topped 3 million in 2017, a 54 percent jump from 2016, according to a 2018 report by the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA).

China was the largest electric car market, accounting for half sold last year - about 580,000 cars. Facing public health risks from increasingly polluted cities, the Chinese government has put in place clear targets for electric vehicle sales, said Nick Twork, general manager for innovation and technology communications at the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance in Paris.

China has also invested in technology and mass production to bring down costs and make electric vehicles more affordable, he added.

The United States had the second-highest number of plug-in vehicles, with about 280,000 cars sold last year, although Nordic countries lead on market share, the IEA said.

Norway was in the top slot, with electric cars making up 39 percent of new car sales.

China and Japan aside, experts said Asian gov-ernments should consult more with industry and consumers to improve policies on electric vehicles, especially as the economic advantages of switching to electric from fossil fuel vehicles are slim.

There is a need to expand infrastructure for electric vehicle charging beyond homes and work

places - a key barrier to take-up of electric vehicles in the region, said Dominic Patella, a transport spe-cialist with the World Bank in Brussels.

Governments can also provide incentives or subsidies for electric vehicle buyers - including

low-cost registration - and tax breaks for sellers, experts said.

“Where this generally works is when you have close cooperation between industry and gov-ernment, and there are economic incentives for

both infrastructure and the purchase of vehicles,” said Twork of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

Preferential parking and lane access are other options for cities, many of which already ban diesel vehicles from the centre at busy times of day or have late-night curfews to reduce noise pollution.

Governments, meanwhile, can make it easier to import electric vehicles, and play a role in per-suading public and private transport providers to go electric.

“Sometimes it takes government intervention to enable the uptake of electric mobility - and that’s where you need good policy, good programmes, good investments to enable good things to take place in the transport sector,” said Patella.

Sea-ChangeBusinesses like parcel delivery and taxi com-

panies have an easier route to switching to electric fleets because they can track routes and busy times, and recharge during quiet periods.

Charging time for the DHL scooters is between 60 to 90 minutes for a range of about 140 km (87 miles), but this differs depending on the make of motorcycle tested, weight of the load and driver, battery age and the type of charger used.

Most privately owned electric vehicles take hours to charge up, a process usually done over-night, but experts said the cost of batteries and charge times are falling fast.

Between 2016 and 2022, Renault-Nissan-Mit-subishi aims to cut the cost of its batteries by 30 percent, with a 15-minute charge time and an overall range of 600 km.

While electrified delivery fleets are expected to take off in other parts of the world first, Asia is a “fast follower”, given the rise in parcel delivery and freight across the region, especially from China, said Andrew Campbell, who provides technical support for the Philippines’ e-Trike Project.

The government-backed programme aims to electrify and replace all the country’s rickshaw-style tuk tuks, and has rolled out about 3,000 e-trikes so far.

“Somewhere between the five and 10-year mark, we are going to see a sea-change,” said Wel-lington-based Campbell.

The king returns, stronger than ever. Jaidah Automotive is set to introduce the 2019 Chev-rolet Corvette ZR1, during the 2018 Qatar Motor Show, a

supercar that pushes Corvette’s per-formance legacy with the highest power, greatest track performance and most advanced technology in its production history.

The Corvette ZR1’s exclusive LT5 supercharged engine, which is rated at an SAE-certified 755 horsepower (563 kW) and 715 lb-ft of torque (969 Nm), is establishing a new benchmark in per-formance. Further, the ZR1 elevates

Corvette’s track capability with two wind tunnel-honed aerodynamics packages, including an available High Wing that provides an estimated 950 pounds (430.91 Kgs) of downforce.

Most powerful everThe ZR1’s LT5 6.2L V-8 engine

advances Corvette’s supercharging legacy, which began with the 2009 sixth-generation ZR1 and continued with the 2015 seventh-generation Z06. The LT5 delivers the highest output ever for a Chevrolet production vehicle, thanks in part to a new, more-efficient

intercooled supercharger system that offers 52 percent more displacement than the Z06’s LT4 supercharger. GM’s first dual-fuel-injection system, which employs primary direct injection and supplemental port injection, helps the LT5 achieve its record output.

Seven-speed manual and eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmis-sions are available with the LT5. It’s the first time an automatic transmission has been offered in a ZR1.

Fastest ever The 2019 Corvette ZR1’s aggressive

appearance is driven by function, con-tributing to its distinction as the fastest production Corvette to date.

An all-new front fascia is designed to channel air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling, with four new radi-ators bringing the heat-exchanger total to 13. A special carbon-fiber “halo” hood is open in the middle to clear the LT5 engine’s supercharger/intercooler assembly.

Additional features, including aero packages with stanchion-mounted wings, help push the ZR1 harder onto the track for more confident handling and faster lap times. Top speed of the ZR1 is over 210 mph (337 kph).

The ZR1 will offer two aero packages: a standard rear Low Wing, which delivers the highest top speed and helps generate up to 70 percent more downforce than the Z06’s base aero package, and an available two-way-adjustable High Wing that offers maximum downforce on the track for the quickest lap times — about 60 percent more downforce than the Z06 with the available Z07 Performance Package. All models also feature a Chev-rolet-first, downforce-enhancing front underwing.

The adjustable High Wing is part of the new ZTK Performance Package, which also includes a front splitter with carbon-fiber end caps, Michelin Pilot

Sport Cup 2 summer-only tires, and spe-cific chassis and Magnetic Ride Control tuning for greater cornering grip.

Both of the ZR1’s wings are tied into the chassis, like the Corvette Racing C7.R racecar, for strength and stability.

Sebring Orange design packageDuring its global launch last year in

Dubai, the Corvette ZR1 also debuted a dynamic, available Sebring Orange Design Package. Centered on its Sebring Orange Tintcoat exterior colour, the package also includes orange brake cal-ipers, orange rocker and splitter accent stripes, orange seat belts, orange interior stitching and unique, bronze aluminum interior trim.

The new design package comple-ments the Corvette ZR1’s tradition of offering maximum performance with refinement and design distinction. The driver-focused, well-appointed cockpit includes standard leather-trimmed seats, with sueded microfiber inserts offered. Heated and vented Napa leather-trimmed seating is also available, as well as a carbon fiber-rimmed steering wheel, competition sport seats, Performance Data Recorder, Bose premium audio system and more.

The 2019 Corvette ZR1 went on sale in the second half of 2018 and is ready to take on the world’s best.

You’re cruising toward a column of cars waiting at a stoplight. You apply your brakes and are rewarded with a sound that, like fingernails on a chalkboard, raises goose bumps on your neck –

and maybe the blood pressure of the driver in front of you. Sound familiar?

Like everything else automotive, an annoying noise can be one of the first signs that something is wrong, or it might mean nothing is amiss. It’s up to you to quickly figure out which. Keep in mind that in most cases, a persistent noise, even after the brakes have warmed up, indicates that a repair is in order. To help determine whether squealing brakes are simply a nuisance or an ominous sign, here’s a quick run-through of the disc brake action that starts with the foot on the brake pedal and ends with a stopped vehicle.

Car brake actionThe pedal pressurises a hydraulic system that

pushes the brake caliper pistons out of the cal-ipers, contacting the brake pads and pressing them against the spinning brake rotors. The contact of the pad’s friction material on the rotors converts kinetic energy into heat and slows the vehicle. The obvious first step in the squeal search is to eliminate serious system problems. Brakes do not simply fail – they deteriorate. One element of the system wears and, over time, takes the rest of the system with it.

Brake system wearThe most common example of deterioration

is a badly worn brake pad, a simple and inex-pensive fix. The next component in line for wear is the brake rotor that the pad rides against when the brakes are applied. A brake pad, worn down to its backing plate, will eat grooves in the rotor, which is not an inexpensive fix. To avoid the domino effect of worn brake parts, check for excessive pad or shoe wear. Look for oil or grease on pads or shoes, warped or scored rotors or drums, misaligned or loose calipers and sloppy wheel bearings. Also be on the watch for glazed pads or rotors or sticky pistons. If there are rust or corrosion deposits on brake elements, this could be a sign that the piston is sticking. If pads or shoes are worn unevenly, side to side, a sticking piston could also be to blame. Even after you and/or your mechanic have determined your brake

system is in tip-top shape, the squeal, out of sheer automotive spite, can sometimes continue. All you get for your trouble is peace of mind that the brakes are functioning more or less normally.

Reducing car brake noiseThere are a few options, though, to quiet the

noise. If you’ve recently purchased high-per-formance carbon-metallic brake pads, know that this material is prone to noise. So you may have to either live with the squeal or go back to original equipment pads. If the squeal occurs only when your brakes are hot, that’s normal. If you’re using your brakes to control speed down a steep grade, you may want to let the engine do the work by shifting to a lower gear. As brakes heat up, they become noisy and less effective. If the noise pops up just before your vehicle comes to a complete

stop, as opposed to squealing throughout the entire range of braking, the cause could be a brake pad that is vibrating against the rotor. A set of brake pad vibration damper pads could cure the squeal, but there’s no guarantee. The vibration damper pads are made of a self-sticking fiber material that sticks to the back of the brake pad backing plate. Some come with a mushroom-shaped button spring in the center. The theory is that the pad and button spring cushion the vibration and create extra clearance to either reduce or com-pletely eliminate the vibration or squeal.

More optionsAnother solution to the pad vibration problem

is a good coating of anti-squeal compound, either in spray or liquid application form. These heat-resistant polymer adhesives go on the back of the

pad to cushion it from the caliper pistons. Be sure to apply it only to that part of the back that comes in contact with the piston. If it ends up on the front contact area of the pad or shoe, the stopping function of the component will be reduced. The spray helps the pad retract from the piston and quiets the squeal. Another option for reducing the vibration is to use a thin coating of a high-tem-perature anti-seize compound applied to the same area indicated for the anti-squeal compound. This is a less effective anti-squeal solution, but it also facilitates easier brake pad changes. Unless you use your vehicle on the track and go through brake pads quickly, stay with the first two solutions. There’s no guarantee with either the vibration damper pad or the anti-squeal compound. Used together, they eliminate the squeal or at least reduce it to a much less irritating decibel level.
