2015 opens another chapter for Qifa Primary School as she celebrates her 30th anniversary as a government school. The school commemorated the event on 25 July, 2015, with a fund-raising event, the Qifa Carnival. The theme for the 30th anniversary celebration, ‘Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future’, gives greater impetus to the school to be reflective and to continue to ‘develop a community of lifelong learners’ among staff and pupils.

A team of teachers in the school worked together to chronicle key milestone events and achievements in a variety of forms. A wall mural, that was specially designed to memorialise the anniversary, showcases the school’s significant events and successes. The mural, which now graces one of the walls in the school canteen, captures the

interest and attention of many. It was aptly chosen to be a launching point for Qifa Carnival by the third principal of Qifa Primary School, Mr Leong Chee Kong, who was the Guest-of-Honour for this special occasion.

Stories and well-wishes from former staff and pupils were compiled into a book of reflections - one of the many display items showcased during the anniversary celebrations which was held in the school hall. A video montage was also prepared to pay tribute to the pioneer educators and pupils of Qifa Primary School over the span of 30 years. It showcased key events and programmes over the last 30 years and it was played throughout the event as visitors and pupils watched keenly for familiar faces and places.

An album of old photographs took visitors down memory lane as they browsed and recollected Qifa’s illustrious history. A guest book was made available for visitors to pen their wishes and thoughts for the school. All these memorabilia will continue to be on display in the school’s Heritage Gallery. To take our visitors on a meaningful journey, an extensive display of exhibition panels which proudly displayed many vibrant and significant school programmes and activities were also displayed in the hall.

Another highlight during the anniversary celebration was the experiences created for visitors to travel back in time. There were hands-on activities at the exhibition in which they could put on past Qifa school uniform, with the aid of standees. Visitors also sat through a lesson conducted in a mock-up classroom of 1950s, with real artefacts used in classrooms of yesteryear on display.

The theme ‘Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future’ was indeed befitting of the occasion as the school continues to take stock of her achievements while forging ahead with spirit anew. Onward Qifa!

Our bi-annual Qifa Carnival took place on Saturday, 25 July, 2015. The carnival for this year was particularly meaningful as we also celebrated the school’s 30th anniversary as a government school.

It was heartening to see many parents coming to the carnival with their children, all smiling and chatting excitedly. The celebration kicked off to the energetic sounds of the Chinese drums welcoming the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Leong Chee Kong, our ex-principal and other honourable guests: Mrs Rathi Parimalan, West 1 Superintendent, Mr Lam Phin Chong, Chairman of School Advisory Committee as well as esteemed School Advisory Committee (SAC) members.

Our carnival began with our special guests unveiling our school mural entitled, “Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future”. The mural showcases the key milestone events in Qifa. This was followed by the opening of our fun activities which included our very own House of Horrors, fun rides, garage sale and games booths.

Proceeds from the Carnival will be mainly donated to Children’s Cancer Foundation.

This year, Qifa celebrated Children’s Day based on the theme “A World of Colours” on 8th October 2015. The theme exemplifies our children’s vibrancy and unique identity. The day was packed with many fun-filled activities. Apart from receiving presents from their teachers, pupils were given a special treat of candy floss and popcorn during recess. Some pupils had the opportunity to challenge their peers to an improvised and enlarged version of the traditional game “Kuti – Kuti”. Excitement was palpable in the air as pupils took on one another in this giant eraser ‘war’.

Later in the day, during the Children’s Day Concert, the Principal delivered a speech reminding the pupils to consider the less fortunate children in the world even as we celebrate and count our blessings. The first performance kicked off with a bang, with our Parent Support Group sizzling the stage with their salsa dance. The pupils were thrilled to watch our Primary 1 and 2 teachers present a synchronised air swimming show, showcasing their gracefulness and fluid dance moves. 3 of our teachers played musical instruments and belted out a song on our school values which they composed themselves, keeping our pupils fully entertained. A quiz segment where pupils guessed who the teachers were based on their childhood pictures drew much laughter and fun. For the grand finale, teachers clad in uniforms became models for the day as they sashayed down the stage amidst loud cheers from the pupils.

The concert ended with the pupils breaking out into a rendition of “Semoga Bahagia”. We hope the beautiful and inspirational lyrics of this song will resonate in the hearts of our young as they journey through their childhood with fond memories etched in their minds.

Celebrations & Commemorations QIFA CELEBRATES

TOGETHER! Qifa Primary School celebrated Singapore’s 50 years of independence, the Golden Jubilee on 6th August 2015. The theme for this year’s National Day celebration was “Majulah Singapura”.

Prior to 6th of August, every pupil received a box of “Building My SG” Lego set, a gift from Singapore to the young. Through the Lego building activities, our pupils understood how Singapore’s past has shaped its present and to be inspired to build their vision of Singapore’s future.

In addition, the National Day Committee commemorated Singapore’s Golden Jubilee by organising a slew of fun-filled and meaningful activities - colouring of bookmarks of Singapore’s prominent landmarks, playing of traditional games during recesses and a quiz to see how much our pupils know about Singapore. The objectives of these activities were to celebrate the shared values that make us uniquely Singaporeans.

During the Observance Ceremony, our Principal, Mrs May Wong, delivered an inspiring speech from the then Minister of Education, Mr Heng Swee Kiat.

After the observance ceremony, the pupils proceeded to the hall for the SG50 celebrations. The Kampong Games Challenge drew cheers as the pupils supported their friends and teachers. As for Qifa Talent Search, we saw the pupils all dressed up in national colours, ready to sing for their country. A meaningful video was also prepared for the pupils entitled, “Fascinating Singapore 50 Years Ago”. We ended the concert with a meaningful tribute to Singapore by singing the theme song, “Our Singapore’.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our founding Prime Minister, once mentioned that he hoped the generation of the future will pursue their rainbows with courage, determination and strength as one united people. They should build a home that is greater, stronger and even more beautiful than it is now.

On this note, we would like to encourage our pupils to persevere, to build upon what our pioneers had accomplished and work together to realise our vision for a brighter and more successful Singapore over the next 50 flourishing and brighter years. Majulah Singapura!

“50 YEARS ON, REMEMERING OUR EVERYDAY PIONEER HEROES - A DIGITAL STORY”

To commemorate SG50, CIVCA organised a competition titled “50 Years On, Remembering Our Everyday Pioneer Heroes - A Digital Story” to encourage the younger generation to pay tributes to the pioneers of Singapore who had contributed to the growth and success of the country over the past 50 years. Participating schools have to create a digital story based on the lives of ‘ordinary heroes’ and their contributions to Singapore.

A group of pupils from Qifa’s Infocomm Club led by Information Technology Executive, Ms Sabrina and teacher-in-charge, Mdm Koh took part in the competition. The team put in a lot of effort and time for the competition while

managing their schoolwork at the same time.

The main character is Mr Wong Ah Hong, one of our pupils’ grandfather. He is 77 years old this year. During his growing-up years, he lived in poverty. Though he had to struggle to make a living, he persevered and did not give up.Our pupils emerged the winner under the Primary School Category. The members are Suu-Ning Aung (6 Diligence), Fauziah Begum Bte Eliyas (6 Fortitude), M Selimul Haque (4 Exemplary), Moh Zenn Kit, Justin (5 Diligence) and Tan Jing Wen (6 Exemplary).

The Mother Tongue Department unveiled Kidzania @Qifa on 7th July, 2015, in line with the school efforts to mould our pupils into effective communicators.

This event was initiated to provide a platform for Primary 1 and 2 pupils to practise conversational mother tongue languages in a meaningful and authentic environment.

There were 11 stations which included a police station, a bank, a clinic, a cinema, café at the zoo, provision and grocery shop. Helmed by parent volunteers who doubled up as station masters, pupils visited all stations. Authentic and realistic opportunities were created to enable pupils to converse in their mother tongue language.

The planning committee as well as the parent volunteers deserve a pat on their backs for the successful event. Pupils’ reflections and comments are a testament to the success of the event.

The Parent Support Group (PSG) chairperson, Ms Serena Lim, commented that despite the sheer level of difficulty in pulling off this event, the school and the parent volunteers had done a fantastic job. At the end of the day, the camaraderie fostered between parents and teachers was awesome, resulting in a fun-filled and meaningful learning experience for our pupils.

Lower Primary Sports Carnival 2015

SWIMSAFER PROGRAMME @QIFA

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during Term 3 and 4, our Primary 3 and 4 pupils look forward to the swimming sessions at Clementi Swimming Complex. MOE’s Swimsafer Programme aims to equip our pupils with fundamental water skills. Pupils are grouped according to their level of swimming competency. Besides having to learn different swimming skills, our pupils enjoy their time at the pool with their friends too.

At the end of the programme, pupils will be tested on their swimming competency and water readiness. Upon completion of the programme, all participants will be awarded with Swimsafer participation certificates.

Good job, boys and girls. Any Joseph Schooling in the making?

The lower primary sports carnival was held on 28th May 2015.

Pupils not only have the opportunity to demonstrate their athletic prowess but also to apply the fundamental movement skills that they have learned during their physical education lessons. Adopting a holistic approach, pupils were encouraged to take on pro-active roles in inculcating team values and resilience. These were principles which served them well when they came together for the games and cheering competition.

Teachers who managed the game stations ensured all pupils were fully engaged. The event drew enormous support from parent volunteers whose efforts created enriching and meaningful experiences for the children. The importance of healthy living through sports served to reinforce on one of our school values ‘Healthy Body’.

self-disCipline & inquiring mind OVERSEAS IMMERSION PROGRAMME TO NANjING, CHINA & kUCHING, SARAWAk

Two teams of Primary 5 pupils and teachers went on overseas immersion programmes to China in June and Malaysia in September 2015. These programmes were designed to expose Qifa pupils to Asian cultures and schools outside of Singapore, as well as to enrich their learning beyond the classroom.

28th May to 3rd June saw 23 Qifa pupils participating in a school exchange programme with pupils from Xingzhi Primary School, a school in Nanjing known for its emphasis on experiential learning. Besides attending daily lessons with pupils from Xingzhi, Qifa pupils were also involved in various interesting activities including hiking, tea harvesting, clay pottery, Chinese calligraphy and lobster fishing with their new friends. Visits to historical sites in Nanjing such as Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s Mausoleum and Zheng He Treasure Ship Park have deepened pupils’ knowledge of the history and culture of Nanjing.

From 3rd to 6th September, another group of 26 Qifa pupils travelled to Kuching, Sarawak. At Chung Hua No. 1 Primary School, Qifa pupils learnt that their new friends had to master three languages in school: Bahasa Malayu, Chinese and English. Qifa pupils also experienced art and music cultures of the Bidayuh tribes as they stepped on bamboo-covered floors of a 500-year-old longhouse and ate, danced and wove their way through the day. To learn more about the diverse cultures and language of Sarawak, pupils visited places such as the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and the Sarawak Museum.

Reflecting on their experiences, pupils agree that they have learnt much about the history and culture of the cities they visited. They have also become more confident, responsible and independent individuals.

self-disCipline & inquiring mind

During the month of July and August, a total of 142 Primary 4 pupils and 16 teachers embarked on a 2D1N Overseas Immersion Programme to Malacca, Malaysia.

Upon arrival, the pupils spent their first afternoon immersed in the kampong spirit and lifestyle. They made wonderful memories through their participation in making ondeh-ondehs, weaving baskets and ketupats, creating batik paintings and playing traditional games like gasing (top spinning).

The pupils were treated to the mouth-watering Peranakan dishes during dinner. During the dinner, some of the pupils donned colourful Peranakan costumes and courageously performed the ethnic dance onstage before their friends and diners in the restaurant!

Pupils visited the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum on the second day of their trip. It was a home to a Peranakan

family 100 years ago. This museum was an eye-opener; a visual representation of the unique eastern and western adaptation and life of the Peranakans.

A city tour of Malacca was also arranged; it covered the Portuguese Fort of A’Famosa, St Francis Xavier Church and Christ Church. Along Harmony Street, pupils were intrigued by the Indian and Chinese temples, as well as mosques, all located on the same street. It was a sight they found familiar – depicting religious harmony in Singapore.

However, the highlight of the trip for the pupils was probably the opportunity to share rooms with their classmates and to be independent. They learned to compromise and take charge of everyday activities like allocation of beds and bath-time, getting themselves ready in the morning and packing their own luggage.

It was a fulfilling trip for our pupils. They agreed that they have learned much about the history of the state. They have also become more independent and responsible.

BUILDING EFFECTIVE & SUSTAINED PARTNERSHIPS

SINGAPORE-jAPANESE SCHOOLS EXCHANGE PROGRAMME 2015

It was not the first time that our Primary Three pupils participated in the Singapore-Japanese Schools Exchange Programme but they were nervous at the beginning nonetheless. Pupils exchanged their name cards and introduced themselves.

A few minutes into the welcoming ceremony, pupils from both schools soon warmed up and were seen chatting among themselves. Occasionally, one could hear the hearty laughter from the jokes they told one another and many were delighted to have made new friends.

In commemoration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, Qifa hosted the exchange programme and introduced our visitors to a variety of the traditional kampong games - chapteh, pick-up sticks and kuti kuti. The games were good ice-breakers and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

During the ‘Tanabata’ activity hosted by the Japanese school, pupils did paper cuttings and each hung their written wish on a ‘tree’.

The programme concluded with three loud and excited cheers. Cheers to many more years of friendship and collaboration!

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Yes, indeed and that’s why the Staff Well-Being Committee organised various activities for the staff in Qifa.

There was a health screening exercise organised for the staff at the beginning of the year so that they could keep their health in check. After all, health is wealth!

The staff also went on a staff learning journey to S.E.A Aquarium and the Trick Eye Museum. The staff had fun learning more about the marine animals and snapping many fun photos at the museum. The experience at the Trick Eye Museum was a reminder for the staff to unleash creativity and powers of observation.

Can the teachers dance, cook or play any sport? Our teachers who strive to be lifelong learners took up the challenge to learn new skills. There was also an activity day where they got to choose from 5 different activities to take part in. Take a look at the photos to catch a glimpse of the fun the staff had with zumba, pilates, badminton, art fun and baking!

Performance by ELDDS.

The theme for this year’s Teachers’ Day Celebration was “Take a Break, Teachers!”. The theme aptly acknowledges and appreciates the hard work and dedication that teachers in Qifa have put in for the pupils.

Teachers, pupils and parent volunteers came together to put up a fantastic concert. The concert started off with the teachers’ red carpet entrance to the hall led by the school leaders. Our very own Angklung Ensemble, Choir and ELDDS members put up sensational performances, showcasing their talents. The audience was also enthralled by the items put up by KidsRead pupils and Primary 1 Exemplary Stomper. Qifa K-Pop dancers put up a spectacular performance too, dancing energetically to the rhythm of the music.

The joyous celebration continued with the presentation of the ‘Most Caring Teacher’ awards. Congratulations to our winners: Mr Kenneth Teo, Mdm Linda Tiang and Mr Tan Hue. It was a moment to remember as their dedication and passion had won the trust, hearts and support of many pupils and teachers. The head prefect presented a ‘Quilt of Qifa’ to Mrs Wong and Ms Uma. It was a gift from the Qifa pupils. The ‘Quilt of Qifa’ signifies the pupils’ gratitude to the school leaders and teachers.

The celebration ended with a cake cutting ceremony. It was a beautiful cake from our Parent Support Group.

The celebration continued in the evening with our School Advisory Committee (SAC) generously hosting the staff of Qifa to a sumptuous Teachers’ Day dinner at Grand Shanghai Restaurant. The theme for the night was ‘Super Stars’ and many of our staff dressed up to the theme. It was an evening of fellowship, bonding and laughter. 3 cheers to our teachers!
