ORDINARY BOARD ATHREE POSITIONS - AUTUMN ‘11 - SPRING ‘12

Robin Callaghan . Euan Murphy . Alice Stearn

My name is Robin Callaghan & I’m a 20 year old second year student studying Psychology.

While I think we run some great evening events and club nights however feel that not enough is done to entice members into our building during the day. This is some-thing I would like to work on, especially having drop in events or clubs and society taster sessions.

Having been a part of the recently rebranded Campaigns and Charities committee for almost a year now it is no secret that I shall have a vested in-terest in helping organise the committee’s events, both new and old. I think one way to do this is by networking. I think we’re missing out on a valuable resource by not approaching other unions around the country to open up channels of communication to learn from each other. Whether it be on issue of fundraising, social events or club nights there’s no harm in chatting to other unions and seeing what is, or what isn’t, working for them and seeing how we may improve our services for the membership.

Last but by no means least as an ordinary board member I will uphold my duties to the members and the union to the best of my abilities.

ORDINARY BOARD ATHREE POSITIONS - AUTUMN ‘11 - SPRING ‘12

Robin Callaghan . Euan Murphy . Alice Stearn

Hi. I’m Euan Murphy, a second year elec-tronics engineer.

From last year’s Freshers’ Week, where I spent most of my time, through to this year’s, where I also spent all my time as a Helper, I’ve been impressed by what the QM has to offer. I’ve seen it all, and tried it myself – I think what is on offer is brilliant, and well supported by the Board of Management. I have been attending Social Committee since the beginning of semester, getting involved with the running of the evenings’ offerings, but I’d like to help more.

I wanted to get more involved with the Board after seeing their dedicationweek in week out to the union, and I want to play my part. I think it is the least I can do after enjoying personally what is on offer. I’m not the one fi lled with loads of ideas, but I am fi lled with the passion and enthusiasm to help carry ideas through to projects.

My chat isn’t the greatest, so if you read this far, thank you. I hope I have somehow convinced you that I am the one deserving of your vote in my wee box; I’ll happily take the time to listen to your excellent chat.

ORDINARY BOARD ATHREE POSITIONS - AUTUMN ‘11 - SPRING ‘12

Robin Callaghan . Euan Murphy . Alice Stearn

Hello I’m Alice, I’m a second year Scot Lit and Italian student.

Being elected to board last Autumn has taught me a lot and I truly feel that I’ve become a strong board member who has contributed to the work of the board and the union. I have worked to be a dedicated member, taking up lieutenancy of the Pub-lications committee and being vocal and productive in meetings as well as dedicating time to other committees and projects.

If elected this term the main thing I’d like to see is a return to the idea of a ‘students’ union’. I would strive to spread the sense of ownership and involvement that I myself feel towards the union and I would always aim to voice the concerns and wishes of all our members. I’d like to see more ini-tiatives in place to encourage membership involvement. Examples includeopen lectures/talks on a variety of subjects – arts, politics, music etcfurther use of Qudos as a venue for clubs, societies and members, and to host events which are more education/work basedworking to further promote affi liation of clubs and societies and to offer more to their members.

Cheers for reading, hope to see you on the 17th to Vote Alice #1!

ORDINARY BOARD BTHREE POSITIONS - AUTUMN ‘11 - AUTUMN ‘12

Evgeny Zhdanov . Laura-Anne Porterfi eld

My name is Evgeny Zhdanov, and I am running for the position of Ordinary Board Member. I have been on the board since March of last year serving in the same position. During this time I have gained a large amount of experience in fulfi lling the duties of a board member, as well asworking with the other members of the board. I feel that I am a good candidate for this position due to my ability to be forward-thinking, and to create innovative ideas to improve the services of the union, as well as having an easily-approachable character that allows me to converse with the majority of the membership base.

If elected, I will work on the following areas:

- Publicising and raising awareness of the services the unionoffers, with a focus on catering and our two wonderful pubs.

- Improving working relationships with societies and attempting tobring their events to the union to improve the variety of services offeredby the union.

- Working with committees to make sure the union caters for all ofour membership to the best of its capabilities.

Thank you for reading, and I hope I can count on your vote.

Evgeny Zhdanov . Laura-Anne Porterfi eld

My name is Laura-Anne Porterfi eld, I’m a second year student studying Primary Edu-cation and I think you should vote for me in the Ordinary Board category B.

In my fi rst year, the Queen Margaret Union really became my second home and I suc-cessfully joined the Board in March, going onto help with countless projects through the Ordinary Board and trying to make the union a more inclusive place for all of its members. Throughout my time at uni, I’ve always been involved with the QM and I hope to con-tinue and expand on my contributions to the union by being re-elected for another year by you, the members.

As part of my re-election, I’d continue to encourage more regular members of the union to get involved with the many aspects of the QM. From Fresh-ers to Post Grads to students living at home, I’ll do everything that I can to make you part of our lovely QM community!

I hope you vote for me, I really love making a difference to the QM. I’ve got good chat, a love for some Cheesy Pop and a massive passion for this union, what more could you ask for?

ORDINARY BOARD CTWO POSITIONS - AUTUMN ‘11 - AUTUMN ‘12(IST YEAR)

Mhairi Bruce . Jamie Kargas . Tom Kelly . Suki McFarland

My name is Mhairi Bruce, I am 19 year old fi rst year and I study Electronic and Electri-cal Engineering.

I am currently a member of the Campaigns and Charity Committee; regularly taking part in the charity projects such as the sell-ing of glow sticks for WestGAP and hand-ing out free condoms to promote safe sex. I also attend the sub-committees.

I think I would be good on the board as I am friendly, passionate and com-mitted while also being very approachable and able to work with a variety of people. I want to be on the board as I really want to get more involved with the Queen Margaret Union and learn more about how it is run. If elected I would be especially interested in fi nding out how to improve the club nights to encourage more people to attend. Furthermore I would like to fi nd a new sponsor so that I could change the really ‘attractive’ board member t-shirts to a different colour.

“Jamie” Vytautas Kargis, 19, 1st year, bsc Genetics

I was born in a small town in Lithuania. Ever since I was a kid, I have had a feeling I didn’t belong. I was always “the weird [insert homophobic slur here]”.I have worked hard to get into the Uni-versity of Glasgow. This was my ticket to freedom.

The QMU is the fi rst place that made me feel like I am not alone. The peo-ple of the QM do not care what you are. They will help you out in your hour of need. This is why I want to dedicate myself to this marvellous student union.

I plan to give all of my energy to help every person that needs help. This is what QM is about – the individual matters most.

I am a member of the Campaigns & Charities Committee – this is what refl ects my personality the most. I have always fought for the people that have been less lucky than I was. I am a proactive person. I have proposed a charity event that was taken into consideration.

All in all, I think I am an appropriate person for the position on the board, but that is up to you to decide!!!

If elected to board, I will use my position to become involved in as many aspects of the union as I physically can. I have already gotten inovolved with three of the commit-tees and feel I have a fi rm grasp of the ins and outs of the union. In becoming a board member I will use my natural highly vocal nature to represent and present some of the great ideas some of you have voiced to me:

Establishing a student union advice centre-where volunteers in older years can come and give younger students advice in the non-threatening union environment on wide ranging issues, such as letting, workloads and meth-ods of money management

Promoting digital formats e.g. video as formats for qmunicate news, so that you can keep up with union news even more easily on your compute

I will also work to maintain the great parts about the QMU that you love and work in a spirit of brotherhood with other board members to ensure we are doing the best we can for you at all times and make sure you have good nights out for a whole year to come.

Also, 100% more bacon.

Coming to University was one of the scari-est things I’ve ever done, as I felt certain that I would both make no friends and never leave my room.

However, I was wrong, and I know that I for that I owe the QMU a massive thank you. Whether you come for a night of banter at Cheesy, or to run a society, or even to get involved with any of the Committees, it is hard not to feel welcomed here. Members are not merely permitted to get involved at the QMU, they are encouraged and supported.

I am so lucky to have had many great experiences in my mere three months in the QMU! And, having already joined the Events Committee, I want to do even more to give back! My most important aim is to help enable others, particularly my fellow Freshers, to have as much fun here as I have had!

If elected, I hope to achieve this by giving First and Second Years living at home Free Passes to Cheesy Pop and Quids, as well as having the Qmunicate delivered to halls so everyone knows what’s happening in the Union.

ORDINARY BOARD DONE POSITION - AUTUMN ‘11 - SPRING ‘12(IST YEAR)

Joanna Reid

My name is Jo and I’m a 19 year-old fi rst year, studying English lit & History.

Before coming to uni, I had no idea how involved you could become in the union, so after an amazing Fresher’s Week, I man-aged to get involved with the Campaigns and Charities Committee.

Having been involved in charity work from a young age, I wanted to con-tinue at university, and I believe that by being on board I’d be able to help expand fundraising within the QM.

If I was to be elected, I’d focus more on how we could get more people interested and involved in charity events that aren’t just for well-known charities, such as the charity of the semester (WestGap). Furthermore, I’d aim to ensure wider promotion for the Free Condom service.

FORMER STUDENT MEMBERONE POSITION - AUTUMN ‘11 - AUTUMN ‘12(IST YEAR)

Edward Furmston-Evans

Hello,

I’m Edward and I’m running for former student member.

I’ve just graduate in Chemistry and while I was a student I was heavily involved in the QM. I was am active member of the social committee, through which I was the BWNPQ DJ and also wrote rounds. I also spent a year as student resident DJ which meant I DJ’ed the fi rst hour of club nights Cheesy Pop and Quids and DJ’ed Jim’s Bar during Quids. I was also a freshers helper for two years.

Now i’ve graduated I am working as a chef and do occasional DJ work as well as staying involved in the QM. I believe my working knowledge of the QMU and the entertainment industry puts me in an excellent position to be a board member in assisting the running of the union as I already have insight into the union and can bring in external knowledge from my other work.

During my time at uni I really loved the Union and unfortunately never had any time to run as a board member due to the intensity of my course. Now I have the opportunity to give back top the place I love the most.

CAMPAIGNS & CHARITIES CONVENOR

ONE POSITION - AUTUMN ‘11 - SUMMER ‘12

Ellie Munro

When I started doing this job about half-way through the summer, I think it’s fair to say that I was somewhat reluctant. I knew that I could do an OK-job, but I didn’t think I could actu-ally make a difference. But 3 months on, I’ve got a committee that’s raising £400 a month for WestGAP, a local anti-poverty charity, that are giving out about 300 packets of condoms a month and that are dedicated to making this place and the wider community better for everyone.

Now, this is all great, and I’m very proud of all of my committee members, but I know that we can do more. I would like to see a greater focus on bringing the com-munity into the building. For next term, I would like to establish a speaker series, inviting a range of speakers to talk about interesting and controversial topics, from poverty to technology, and a lot in between. I want to give more opportunities to members to raise money and host events for causes that are important to them, working much more through clubs and societies, as well as outreach to individuals. I would also like to see the Union as a whole becoming much more a part of the community, getting involved in movements and events that are important to our di-verse membership, making sure that we’re all aware of and connecting to the world outside of University.

It is the change I have already made, and the change that I have yet to make, that makes me run for this position. I know that we can do more, both in terms of giving back to the membership, and in giving back to the community. I would like the op-portunity to try to make this happen.
