As cloud computing expands, more companies are exploring intelligent vehicle-mounted
services. Qoros, an automotive manufacturing company, developed Yiyun, the first hybrid
cloud platform that provides telematics services to customers. To support Yiyun and its other
services in this fast-growing market, Qoros needed a fast, scalable, and stable cloud solution
and chose Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. As a result, the company improved
system operation and management, security, and costs.

BIG DATA CREATES HIGH TRAFFIC FOR AN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY
Qoros is the first automotive manufacturer using a hybrid cloud architecture for telematics, which
encompasses telecommunications, vehicular technology, electrical engineering, and computer
science. The company uses a public cloud to support big data processing and rapid business growth
and a private cloud to maintain security and accumulate critical user data. To support rapid iteration
and adjustment of its evolving technologies, Qoros uses a flexible, agile, and scalable cloud-based IT
infrastructure.
“In terms of technical framework, Qoros’s telematics service is the first hybrid cloud platform in
production, which is just a dream for other brands in the vehicle industry. But Qoros was the very
first case,” said Rui Song, telematics system application engineer for Connected Services, Marketing
and Sales at Qoros.
Qoros collects and shares data with each car as frequently as multiple times per second to ensure
that drivers receive accurate, real-time traffic and service information. Millions of bytes of data are
generated every day, creating high interactivity for their cloud solutions and high server traffic.
“What is most difficult in telematics is providing users with cloud services while also collecting
data on driving habits and processes, such as road conditions and tire pressure, from the vehicles,”
said Song.
To support its hybrid cloud architecture and improve application operation and integration,
processing performance, and process automation for its telematics services, Qoros needed a
fast, lightweight middleware product.
“The traditional technical architecture is too huge, and replacing its core components usually
means massive risks and workloads,” said Song.
As early as 2008, Swedish WirelessCar — a telematics service provider for BMW, Volvo, Audi, and
other luxury car brands — chose Red Hat JBoss Middleware to support its open architecture, leading
Qoros to consider Red Hat.
“After testing, Qoros found that only Red Hat can provide the efficient, flexible, and scalable services
we need while reducing our costs,” said Song.
FLEXIBLE, SECURE MIDDLEWARE FOR A HYBRID CLOUD ARCHITECTURE
Qoros selected Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform as the middleware solution for its
hybrid cloud vehicle networking architecture. Qoros used Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application
Platform alongside the HornetQ messaging system and RESTEasy RESTful frameworks to create a
complete solution to fit their hybrid cloud vehicle networking architecture.
“Qoros chose Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform to build our telematics product, Yiyun,
to boldly embrace new ideas and the demands of modern users. Qoros is also using new technology
to ensure secure access, instead of using a traditional IT hardware solution,” said Song.
Red Hat solutions can be flexibly deployed on Microsoft Azure, a public cloud platform, as well as
Qoros’s private cloud platform to meet the diverse needs of the company’s telematics services.
Red Hat’s enterprise-grade middleware solution provides enhanced functionality, performance,
and support compared to open source community versions, as well as higher reliability and security.

IMPROVEMENTS FOR QOROS AND ITS CUSTOMERS
INCREASED AGILITY AND FLEXIBILITY
The flexible, lightweight components of Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform provide
scalability and space for future development. Features can be added quickly, without complex-
ity from a lack of software or hardware integration. Qoros can quickly, cost-effectively replace and
update core components — for example, transitioning a database from Oracle to NoSQL MongoDB.
With Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, Qoros was able to quickly create a development
roadmap for Yiyun, improving agility and innovation. In addition, convenient, automated cluster
deployment let Qoros automate maintenance, resulting in operation and maintenance time
reductions of at least 50% compared to a larger, traditional IT system.
INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS FOR SIMPLIFIED OPERATIONS
Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform offers a full set of integrated solutions that has
dramatically simplified system development, deployment, operation, and maintenance. Previously,
deploying all core technical components would take several days, but now these components are
consolidated under a single installation. This consolidation also eliminated the need for many
reference components and simplified the code design module for faster, simpler development cycles.
A single, streamlined solution reduces development and deployment time, helping Qoros focus more
resources on research and development to meet market demands with faster product launches.
“The Red Hat platform unifies the telematics products for Qoros by connecting with all of their
services,” said Song.
ENTERPRISE-GRADE STABILITY AND SECURITY
Due to automotive industry regulations, Qoros requires military-grade security for its vehicle net-
working products. Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform provides comprehensive security
configuration, including Kerberos authentication and flexible, dynamic password changes, for the
underlying systems as part of Yiyun’s strict application-layer security strategy. In addition, the
Red Hat product security team provides 24x7 tracking and rapid response to resolve issues quickly.
FASTER CUSTOMER RESPONSE TIME
Response time is key to customer satisfaction of Qoros car owners and critical for communication
with operators of fast-moving vehicles. Sales growth resulted in slower networking service response
times during peak hours.
With Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, server capacity was upgraded tenfold. Qoros
is able to respond to drivers 20 times faster, reducing average response time to 900 milliseconds,
even during peak hours.
“Faster data analysis and real-time traffic data make Qoros the most accurate real-time intelligent
transportation display service. We provide users with intelligent route recommendation and interest
points, such as parking guidance,” said Song.

REDUCED COSTS
With Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, Qoros was able to drastically reduce
costs, including:
• Development costs. Avoiding costly software vendor lock-in helped Qoros reduce
development costs by nearly 50% compared to previous solutions.
• Hardware costs. Reducing the number of servers from 50 to fewer than 10 has reduced
hardware costs by more than 80%. Qoros also anticipates reduced costs for future expansion.
