Welcome to Rosewood State High School

Secondary education has been available in Rosewood since 1962. However, Rosewood State High School was opened in 1980 to replace the original secondary department attached to the Rosewood State School. With the commencement of the 2018 school year, Rosewood State High School is entering its 39th year.

Our school motto, In Pursuit of Excellence provides a clear direction for our work day by day. In keeping with the school motto our goal is to work with each student towards the realisation of the student’s individual potential. Students have the opportunity to do this through active participation in academic, cultural, sporting and community pursuits. They are actively encouraged to assume an increasing personal responsibility for their action within a supportive school environment where the rights and responsibilities of all are acknowledge and valued.

In working to achieve this goal, the school has the active support of staff, students and parents as well as a number of individuals and organisations from the wider Rosewood community. The School Council, Parents and Citizens Association, Tuckshop Committee, Student Council and the Leo Club contribute significantly to the achievement of the school’s goals and are indicative of the quality partnerships that underpin the success of Rosewood State High School. Students and families new to the school are encouraged to seek active involvement in the school.

Rosewood State High School is:

a creative, challenging and stimulating school an inclusive school a welcoming, happy and safe school a distinctive school a clean and green school a school in productive partnership with the community an active and healthy school and it is equipped with capable and flexible staff.

As Principal, I am committed to creating a culture of high expectations and enhanced school performance. I encourage you to become part of the daily life of our school, to hold us to our commitments and work with us to achieve excellence in everything we do.

ACCIDENT PROCEDURESIn the event of a student sustaining a serious injury or medical emergency an ambulance will be called. Where possible, the parent will be contacted immediately. Upon enrolment, parents are requested to provide the student’s medical information and the details of emergency contacts.

ABSENCESRosewood State High School is a full time high school. Absence must be explained with a written note or phone call, or text message from parent or care giver outlining the reasonable absence (explained absence). The student absence line is 5461 9466 or you can send a text message to M. 0429 362 351.

Paid employment is not a legitimate reason for being absent from school. It is, in fact, against the law for students to be employed during school hours unless it is an approved program such as a negotiated school based apprenticeship or traineeship.

All absences must be explained. Students who enrol in Years 11 and 12 are doing so by choice, therefore, there are higher expectations for all Senior Students. Senior students who do not attend school regularly risk:

An absentee comment being recorded on any school reference, Withdrawal of credit for subjects studied, Failure to qualify for an OP, Failure to qualify for a Queensland Certificate of Education.

Senior students who fail to meet the requirements of the Attendance and Participation Policy risk cancellation of their enrolment at Rosewood State High School.

ARRIVAL TIME AT SCHOOLClasses begin at 8:50am. There is no need for students to be at school prior to 8:20am unless a specific activity has been organised.

Students arriving late are required to report to the office to sign in and receive a ‘late pass’. Failure to do so, results in the student being marked absent.

8

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

The Education Act 2006 states that all students under the age of 17 must be engaged in full time study or full time work. Therefore students are expected to attend school on every school day, to attend every timetabled lesson and complete all assessment as required by work programs and QCAA policy.

CASH COLLECTION OFFICEThe cash collection office operates from the Administration Building, Monday to Friday.

COMPLAINTS RESOLUTIONPutting Things Right - Our Commitment to Positive Complaints Management

Effective partnerships between parents, students and our school are important to educational success. One part of that partnership is trust and openness. We need to be able to talk to each other when we have concerns, so that those issues can be worked out. From time to time you may have concerns or complaints relating to our school. It is important that you share these with us. Perhaps we haven’t explained something very well. We need to know so that we can put things right. Perhaps you don’t agree with a decision. We need to talk the issues through. As a result, you could gain a better understanding of why we made that decision. Or we may need to reconsider our decision. Your contribution can help us improve. We are committed to dealing positively with your concern. It helps us to learn how we can do things better for you.We will try to make sure that your complaint is resolved quickly. Sometimes a complex matter will take time. We will always make sure you understand what we are doing and why.

COMMUNICATIONTelephone Contact

We ask that you minimise messages to students via the office – especially in the afternoon, as it is sometimes difficult to pass them on by 2.55 pm. We are only too happy to pass on urgent and/or important messages but sometimes receive more than we can easily manage close to 2.55 pm.

Parent/Teacher InterviewsThe School uses an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO).Using this system you are able to book the interview times that suit you best. All you need to do is logon to:https://bookings.parentteacheronline.com.au/Logon2.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fdefault.aspx%3fschool%3d588tr&school=588tr

FacebookThe school has a Facebook page which is posted on daily with events from the school notices, calendar and what is happening in the classrooms. Please visit our page at:https://www.facebook.com/rosewoodstatehighschool/

DIARYDiaries are issued to students at the beginning of the year. The diary is used every day to record tasks at hand and is an important method of communication between home and school. As such, it needs to be kept in an acceptable condition. The diary should be kept free from graffiti and pictures. Replacement diaries may be purchased from the Cash Collection Office at a cost of $8.00.

EVACUATION/LOCK DOWN PROCEDURESEmergency evacuations and lock down procedures are practised regularly. An alarm system operates and is frequently tested. Full evacuation drill instructions and lock down procedures are on display throughout the school and all visitors must make themselves familiar with the procedures. Fortunately, the design of our school is such as to minimise the risk of fire damage, and at the same time maximise the ease of evacuation. As with all ground level/cement constructions, we have little to worry about but it is best to be prepared.

EXCURSIONS AND CAMPSFrom time to time throughout the year, teachers may decide to illustrate sections of the curriculum by conducting excursions or camps to places of educational interest. On each occasion the full instructional benefits will be explained to parents. Students may only participate upon prior payment and receipt of a signed permission form with medical details disclosed. Most excursions will require some expenditure for accommodation and or transport but be assured that all efforts are made to keep costs to a minimum. Students who do not participate remain at school and receive normal classroom instruction.

Year 7 CampYear 7 students at Rosewood State High School have the opportunity to attend the year 7 camp which is held at Tallebudgera Beach School. This camp enables students the opportunity to take part in teambuilding activities, beach challenges, bodyboarding, surf awareness, a kayaking adventure and a high ropes challenge. These activities are not only very fun and exciting but they also help to teach our students some very important life skills. . More information will be available early 2018.

FEESFees are charged at $180 per annum.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEAbstudy

Students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent according to the ABSTUDY definition may be eligible for financial assistance. Please see the Guidance Officer (Mrs L Harlow) or Community Education Councillor (Ms G Semple) for further details.

Youth AllowanceThis scheme of financial assistance is income tested. It is available to young people studying full time.

HAIRHair must be clean and tidy and comply with workplace health and safety provisions. Hairstyles should be conservatively styled and be a natural hair colour. Multiple coloured, bright or fluorescent colours are inappropriate. Hairstyles such as mohawks, dreadlocks, shaved or partly shaved heads are also inappropriate. Students who present with inappropriate hairstyles will be required to rectify the situation.

10

HATSA sun safe hat or cap is essential for all sporting activities, outdoor education or outdoor lunch activity.

HOMEWORKHomework is an integral part of any study programme. It is expected and indeed essential that students do some form of home study each week night, if they wish to succeed in secondary education. Prescribed homework may not be set in every subject every night however the industrious student will endeavour to review work done in class during the day. A particular time and a particular place, free from distractions are the needs of every student to be successful with homework.

A diary is issued to all students at the beginning of the year. It is essential that all students take this diary to all lessons to copy down homework tasks. Parents are asked to check their student’s use of the diary. If necessary, a replacement diary may be purchased from the Cash Collection Office at a cost of $8.00.If students are unable to complete their homework they must present their teacher with a note of explanation signed by a parent before the lesson.Students achieve success at various rates but a suggested time allowance for both written homework and study is as follows:

Years 7, 8, 9: Up to but generally no more than 5 hours per week.

Years 10, 11, 12: In the senior phase the amount of time devoted to homework and independent study will vary according to the student’s learning needs and individual programme of learning determined through their Senior Education and Training plan.

HOUSE SYSTEMStudents are allocated to a house for the purpose of athletics and swimming carnivals. Our house names have a local flavour and consist of: Normanton (Red), Oakleigh (Yellow), Rosemount (Blue) and Smithfield (Green).

ID CARDSTo make Resource Centre borrowing fast and efficient, all students are automatically issued with a Student ID card upon receipt of a signed Student Resource Scheme form. This card includes a photo, borrower number and an expiry date (one per calendar year). The card remains the property of the school and must be cared for appropriately and responsibly. Failure to present the card for borrowing will result in the student being refused permission to borrow.

It is the student’s responsibility to report lost or damaged cards to the Resource Centre as soon as possible after the event and to arrange for a replacement card.

The cost to students who do not participate in the Student Resource Scheme or have lost or damaged cards is $5.00.

WARNING: DO NOT LEND YOUR ID CARD OR USE IT FOR OTHER STUDENTS TO BORROW.

11

ILLNESSStudents should not be sent to school sick as we have limited sick room space and supervision.

Students who become ill during school hours must notify their teacher and report to the office. Our response will be determined by the apparent seriousness of the signs and symptoms. Often, a student will be sent to the sick room where recovery sometimes occurs after a short rest. If the illness is more serious, we will try to contact you at your home or place of work, with a view to sending the student home.

Sick students will not be sent home to an empty house. Therefore, it is important that the school be promptly notified of any changes to emergency contact information.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGYAll students are required to have School Computer Network access. Students are also expected to maintain a printing credit balance. All curriculum areas use computers for class work, electronic information retrieval and assignment writing.

The school computer network is provided to:

give students access to the Internet and the information available there;

give students access to programs that are being used in the workplace;

assist in the completion of class tasks or preparation of assignments; and

enable students to develop skills needed for further study or employment.

You will be asked to sign an agreement on enrolment that you understand the ICT Policy and your rights and responsibilities as a student as outlined in the Responsible Behaviour Plan.

12

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Rosewood State High School offers an instrumental music programme for students already learning or wishing to learn Brass, Woodwind or Percussion instruments. The school does not offer guitar or piano lessons.

Lessons are part of an initiative to equip students with worthwhile lifelong learning and leisure pursuits. As a part of this programme, students are given the opportunity to apply for leadership positions.

All students who played an instrument in primary school are encouraged to keep with the programme! Lessons are 35 minutes per week and work on a rotational timetable. Lesson times are very flexible and can be catered around students’ specific needs so that they do not miss out on other subjects. We offer Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble as well as an exciting number of performance opportunities, workshops and camps.

In order to maintain and expand the programme at our school, the P&C association agreed to put into place an Instrumental Music levy in addition to the Student Resource Scheme.

JEWELLERY

Only a watch and two studs or sleepers in each ear are allowable. Any facial piercings must be clear plastic, very small and unobtrusive. NO SPACER, GAUGE, TAPER, STRETCHER OR PLUG EAR JEWELLERY.

LUNCH PASSES/EARLY DEPARTURE

Students are allowed to leave the school grounds during the lunch break or at other times during the day only when the following procedures have been followed.

Temporary Lunch Pass/Early DepartureA temporary lunch pass or permission to leave the school early will be issued to students only when requested by a parents’ note. These notes must be presented to the office before school starts and the Early Leaving Pass must be collected before the student exits the school grounds.

13

Conditions of Issue: The pass must be carried by the student when absent from the school during 2nd break and

must be produced on demand to a teacher. The pass is valid only for travel between school and their parent’s home by the most direct

route. Any variation of the direct home route must be covered by a temporary one-day pass valid

on day of issue only and on receipt of a written request from a parent. The pass is issued on the understanding that the parent/guardian is at home. No other student is to accompany the pass holder.

MAKE-UP

No make-up should be worn at school.

MEDIA CONSENT

A “State School Consent Form to Use, Record or Disclose Copyright Material, Recording, Name or Personal Information” is provided upon enrolment. This form enables student images and works to be published on the school’s website, newsletter, promotional material, advertising, displays, competitions, year books and local media. It is not compulsory for you to provide consent and limitations may be applied. The consent will remain in place until the student leaves the school. If you wish to modify or revoke the consent, you should notify the school in writing. After that notice is received, the Department and the State will not make any new additional use of the individual work, but any existing uses will continue.

MEDICATIONAll medication, including over-the-counter medication such as paracetamol and alternative medicines, treatments or supplements, must be authorised by a medical practitioner before it can be administered to students.

Prescribed medication must clearly state (on the container given by the pharmacist) the child’s name, dosage and times for dosage. It should be brought to the school in such a container. A “Declaration for Medication” to be given at school must be completed by a parent and handed to the school office. Strict records of administered medication are kept.

Medication sent with a child will not be administered unless the Request to Administer Medication at School form (available from the office) is completed. All medication should be handed in at the office on arrival at school.

Exception to the above guidelines are Asthma puffers (such as Ventolin) which may be kept by the student, however a letter acknowledging the child’s capacity to use puffers properly must be presented to the office.

MOBILE PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICESThere are times when it is genuinely appropriate and beneficial for students to have access to a mobile phone. Students may, for example, need to contact parents to confirm a collection time after school. Our focus is on uninterrupted teaching & learning, therefore:

It is important that students display courtesy, consideration and respect for others when using a mobile phone or other devices.

14

Students may only use their mobile phones or other devices before or after school, or during first or second break. They are not to be used in any manner or place which is disruptive to school routine.

Students need to ensure that their mobile phones or other devices are always stored in a safe and secure place. Existing arrangements for checking them in at the office will remain in place.

Students must have their mobile phone or other devices switched off and out of sight during classes. Students found using these devices during exams will face disciplinary action and possible assessment penalties.

Any mobile phone or other device use which disturbs the teaching/learning environment of the school i.e. seen or heard in the classroom will result in confiscation of the item and consequences as outlined in the Responsible Behaviour Plan for students.

Cameras/In-phone cameras are not to be used anywhere on the school grounds without the consent of the person/s involved and the supervising teacher.

Appropriate action, as outlined in the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan, will be taken against any student who photographs or films other individuals without their consent or who sends harassing or threatening text messages. The dissemination of images or sound captured within the school is illegal and will not be tolerated. Students involved in this practice will be subject to disciplinary action including suspension and recommendation for exclusion.

Mobile phones or other devices are brought to school at students’ risk. No liability will be accepted by the school in the event of the loss, theft or damage of any device.

This policy also applies to students during excursions, camps and extra-curricular activities.

What is a QParents Account Owner (QPAO)?

The school will nominate one parent or legal guardian for each student to be the QParents Account Owner (QPAO). The QPAO will be able to register for QParents to access and manage the student’s information online. A student’s QPAO will be able to view the student’s information and submit requests to update some of the student’s details. The QPAO will also be able to invite other people (such as another parent or family member), to view the student’s information. Once invited, these people can register for QParents as “delegated viewers”. A delegated viewer can see the student’s details, but cannot make updates.

Registering for QParents

You will receive an invitation email or letter from us containing your unique invitation. Simply follow the instructions in that email or letter to complete the QParents account registration process. If you do not want to register, you can just ignore the invitation and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents. Or, if you want another parent to be the QPAO, you can advise us and we will send them an invitation email or letter with their own unique invitation code.

Identity verification

When registering as a QPAO, you will need to verify 100 points of identity documents online. The 100 points can be made up of documents in the following list:

Australian Passport 50 pts Australian Marriage Certificate 40 ptsAustralian Driver Licence 50 pts Australian Citizenship Certificate 40 ptsAustralian Birth Certificate 50 pts Change of Name Certificate 40 ptsMedicare Card 20 pts Australian Visa (foreign passports) 20 pts

If you only have 60-90 points of the above ID documents you can still register for QParents, but you will need to attend the school for an additional check after you have registered online. If you don’t have sufficient documents, you might like to nominate another parent as the QPAO.For more information on the online identity verification process, see https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/help

Where does the information about my child come from?

All of the information that is presented in QParents comes from the IT system that is used by all Queensland state schools. Schools will continue to manage student information in this system, and the information will be extracted and presented in QParents.

Will my child’s information be secure?

Yes. QParents is a secure portal that meets strict industry standards. Only people with the right to access information about their child will be given an account; no one else.

19

If you don’t want to register for QParents, your account will not be created and your child’s information will not be made available through QParents.

REFUNDS

At Rosewood State High School, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students, staff and volunteers. This commitment includes the health and safety of staff and students when conducting curriculum activities in the school or in other locations.

School excursions and camps enhance a student’s learning by providing opportunities for the student to participate in activities, both curriculum-related and recreational, outside the normal school routine. All planned school excursions are approved by the Principal and endorsed by the Parents and Citizens Association. State schools are able to charge a fee for:

an educational service including materials and consumables not defined as instruction, administration and facilities for the education of the student

an education service purchased from a provider other than the school where the provider charges the school and

a specialised educational program.

A school fee is directed to the purpose for which it is charged. School fees for extra-curricular activities are calculated on a cost recovery only basis, according to the number of students who have indicated their attendance. Participation of students in an extra-curricular activity is indicated through payment of the fee and provision of a permission form completed by the parent.

As the school budget cannot meet any shortfalls in funding for an extra-curricular activity due to the subsequent non-participation of a student who had previously indicated attendance of the activity, fees already paid for an extra-curricular activity may be refunded in full or in part or not at all, having regard to the associated expenses incurred and the circumstances of the non-participation.

If a parent wishes to apply for a refund due to their child’s non-participation in an extra-curricular activity, they may do so by completing a Request for Refund form available from the school office. Where possible, the request should include the receipt relating to the payment for which a refund is being sought.

It is preferred that refunds be made as a credit against the student’s account at the school, and used to offset any future charges.

RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLANRosewood State High School is committed to providing a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment for students and staff, where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing. All parents are provided with a copy of the Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students upon enrolment.

Our plan is designed to facilitate high standards of behaviour so that the learning and teaching in our school can be effective and students can participate positively within our school community.

20

All areas of Rosewood State High School are learning and teaching environments. We consider behaviour management to be an opportunity for valuable social learning as well as a means of maximising the success of academic education programmes.

Our Rights and Responsibilities and Code of Conduct have been agreed upon and endorsed by all staff, the Rosewood State High School and our school P&C. They are aligned with the values, principles and expected standards outlined in The Department of Education’s Code of School Behaviour.

In cases of serious illness or accidents, the school attempts to contact a parent to ascertain the parent’s wishes about sending the student home, off in an ambulance, etc. For this reason, it is important that the school be supplied with up-to-date information about addresses, phone numbers and contact places.

SUN SAFE POLICYQueensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Of all new cancers diagnosed in Australia each year, 80% are skin cancers. Research indicates that childhood sun exposure is an important contributing factor to the development of skin cancer later in life. Given that students are at school during peak ultraviolet radiation (UVR) times throughout the day, schools play a major role in both minimising student’s UVR exposure and providing an environment where policies and procedures can positively influence student behaviour.

Skin damage, including skin cancer, is the result of cumulative exposure to the sun. Research shows that severe sunburn contributes to skin cancer and other forms of skin damage such as sun sports, blemishes and premature ageing. Most skin damage sand skin cancer is therefore preventable. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) levels are highest during the hours that students are at school. As students will spend a portion of their day outdoors, we are committed to protecting them from the harmful effects of the sun.

Our policy aims to:

provide ongoing education that promotes personal responsibility for skin cancer prevention and early detection;

provide environments that support SunSmart practices;

22

create an awareness of the need to reschedule work and outdoor activities to support SunSmart practices where possible;

recognise that winter sun also contributes to skin damage;

implement the policy throughout the year.
