    main contractor.

    b) Sanitary appliances to be supplied and fixed by a nominated sub-

    contractor.

    c) Joinery shelving is required but the designs have not yet been finalized

The client would go to the main contractor, supplier or sub-contractor and selects

that person who he would like to do the works. After the selection these

person/people, they must stay in contact with the main contractor.

The only thing that the supplier could be affect is the cost of the material.

The last factor is the provisional sum.

The value of the provisional sum could change because of the changes occurring

during the work being done. This could result in material, overheads, labor and the

    profit to increase.

Give examples of three different methods of tendering that can be used

for the main contract, sub-contract works or supply packages and explain

how these may affect pricing strategies.

The three methods of tendering are:

    The Open Tendering,

This type is used where it could create or provide benefits for the potential

    providers.

Benefits of open tenders are: Ensuring fairness to potential providers.

Improving decision making by considering a range of potential purchasing

    options.

    Identifying new potential providers.

Assisting to establish reasonable prices for services.

Using competition to improving the efficiency and quality of services for

    clients.

If opting for an open tender the number of potential responses is larger and as so

the lead agency may use a multi-stage tender comprising requests to guaranteethat the responses is manageable and as big as possible so that the costs are kept

    to a minimum.

    The Selective Tendering,

A selective tender takes place when the client selects which company or companieswill be invited to tender for the business. An example of such could be that aparticular company could have left its contact details to this particular client in thepast and when that same client started a project he would choose them.

    The Negotiating Tendering

The Negotiating tender method is a simple method of how to do the work. Here the

same people who do the tender decide on a contractor. After the contractor is

chosen, they would set up a meeting regarding the tender. By using the

negotiating tender one could distinguish the difference in prices that other

contractors would have given them for that tender. In such situations the

client would know the people and companies selected and as so many times work

are carried out faster and better.

From the given sheet, prepare the relevant Bar Bending Schedules for the

required reinforcement. From such schedules prepare appropriate Tender

BOQs and explain how your chosen method of tendering matches the

different nature of each project listed below:

    a) The supply only of all reinforcement and related accessories

    b) Sub-contract works for all the cutting and bending of all the required

    steel, and

    c) The main-contract package including for the supply, cutting, bending

and fixing on site of all the required concrete, formworks and

    reinforcement.

Examine and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of Microsoft

Excel and AutoCAD for facilitating the estimating, tendering and on-site

    progress measurements and bills.

There are quite a few advantages and disadvantages in using Microsoft Excel. The

    advantages are;

If you have the Microsoft Office in your PC, you don't need anything else to be

installed in your computer. You are good to go and can start with your

    programming straight away.

If you are a beginner, you can easily learn the Excel VBA Programming

because you are half familiar with the programming platform that you are

going to use, which is Excel.

you can start with small Excel application and as the need grows especially

on records that are getting huge, you can still use the same Excel

application and upgrade your database platform from Excel to other high-

end like Access, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, etc.

Excel is capable of connecting directly to OLAP databases and can beintegrated in Pivot Tables.

Excel is portable. You can send it to someone through email.

Excel application also has its disadvantages. But these disadvantages are

sometimes having some workaround that can be done to fix or sometimes there are

    little effect that you can just live with them;

When you develop your application into one file it can be huge and will make

    your program execution very slow

When you separate functions to multiple files, Excel files are prone to get lost

in your hard drive especially when you break your application to too many

files. You should practice a good folders/sub-directories management.

Excel worksheet as a database has a limited number of rows or records that

you can store. But when you reach the 65k lines limit, you can convert it

easily to Access and the rest of the application is can still be used.

If you can send Excel via email, you can accidentally send your file to

someone who should not have it or not authorized to have it.

If you compare 2D CAD, against old-school design / draughting using drawing

boards, you'll already know, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

A few advantages of 2D CAD:

    Reduced design timescales.

Reuse of designs. Drawing errors can be corrected easily.

Drawings can be sent/received via email in seconds.

    Disadvantages:

Time & cost of implementing the CAD system.

Time & cost of training people to use the CAD.

Time & cost of migrating legacy drawings into CAD format.

If you compare the use of 3D CAD against drawing board draughting. The list of

disadvantages pretty much stays the same, whilst the list of advantages growsfurther.

    Advantages of 3D CAD:

More stylish /complex products can be designed using 3D surfacing.

Parametric modeling allows many design iterations to be generated &

    evaluated quickly.

Designs can be analyzed and optimized virtually using finite element

    analysis.

Clearance/interference checks can be made easily

3D CAD data can be imported directly in to CAM software, further reducingtimescales and mistakes from interpretation of 2D drawings.
