Generate mesh and smooth mesh

grasshopper is able to offset multiple curves at same time, which is more convenience than doing it in Rhino.

Creating a curved tube, it is same as adding thickness to simple line. It will be helpful to cre-ate structure thickness in future practise.

Page 5: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Project surface to 2D, easy for having simple elevation of a structure.

Creating section surfaces from a single surfaceLabeling those surface in a grid for later fabri-cation. Grasshopper has a easy method to achieve this process. This is a good sample for labeling and fabrication.

puting geomatries on curves along the surface

Creating Gridshellthis is a process of creating structure form along the curved line, this can be helpful to generate a line structure for fur-ther development.

The yellow panel shows the output data in a list, it is good to use to when there is problem with form shape and structure

Patterning listsCreating different types of pattern on a surface, the surface can be plat. Can the surface be curved? Further development

Problem with cull

Why some are not connected

Page 9: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Creating Voronoi pattern based structure. “soild difference” commend can combine two solid form into one.Different scale can give this structrue dif-ferent meaning.

Page 10: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

From case study oneUsing field to create patternsThe pattern can be changed by entering different parameter, it is a good starting point for people to study and generate different kinds of curves.

Page 11: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Random pattern mesh surface.Use a new plug-in “weaverbird”, it is very easy to use as a mesh creatorPutting the random value into the definition, the results are interesting. Maybe use them as type of modern window frame.

Page 12: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Studying “cull pattern” and “dispatch” command

Cull pattern can remove elements from a existing list, it often help people to select the thing that they want from list.

Dispatch command is separate a list into two and how to separate can also be controlled by entering true false pattern command.

Dividing surface into series parts, creating pattern along the surface.Remind me of Michelin.

REVERSE-ENGINEER

The definition i made has the limitation on controlling curve and changing patterns. Some triangular pattern are clash with each other, which is not a successful result. Need to add some command for controlling curve.

Page 15: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

After adding the graph mapper to the evaluated curve, all the curves are able to be controlled. Furthermore, there is no clash between pattern.

Page 16: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Want to develop some surface, first think in my head is wavestart to create wave surface, using sine expression.

Limits: wave can only move in one direction, how about creating some wave surface that is capable to move in multiple directions.

Page 17: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Water drop effectOther attempt for creating wave surface. this time I was able to a kind of water wave effect, the expression is based on sine too, but much more complicated. Maybe can collect some curves from those surface and use them as a water wave data.

Page 18: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Urban city experimentAgain using random factor and voronoi to develop some ran-dom urban planning. Why we like random stuff, because it always give us surprise

Low density low rise

Medium density medium rise

High density high rise

DEVELOPING SPINE

Creating basic spine shape form

ONE

Page 21: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

Change each panel’s shape by putting a attracting point

Limits: difficulty due to control the size changing for panels

Page 22: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

TWO

Similar result but different approachThis time a graph mapper is added into the definition to give a control of the size changing in each panel

CURVE MANIPULATION

Use point to change push lines on the Z axis

point on line point pushes line changing push value

push in negative direction

multiple points

point doesn’t need to be on the linethey can be anywhere around the linemagnetic field based logic

STRUCTURE AND DESIGN ISSUES FOR NEXT PART

Fins are thin and without pro-tectionFurther develop the fin for top level

Jointing problemHow to connect each core structure?Using a joint (has to be rotatable & able to have 360 degree rotation in order to achieve design intent)

DESIGNING JOINT

Due to the difficulty of using grasshopper to design the whole joint, the definition is showing the relation between the core structure and joint

For me many detail part are not able to be make by grasshopper in a short period of time, therefore i used rhino to refine the joint design

Page 49: Qu liheng 581800 algorithmic sketch pages

using 3mm MDF material to fabri-cate the jointconsidering the thickness and size in the fabrication method.
