Twenty crude oils from 10 wells in a North Sea oil field were correlated by multivariate analysis of gas chromatographic parameters. The whole oil chro- matograms showed distinct differences between oils from different formations due to differences in biodegradation; however, they were insufficient for a complete classification. Sediment with the largest harmonic amplitudes was also that with the longest residence time within the cascadograph; that is, it takes longer for more irregularly shaped particles to pass a sieve than more equant and smooth particles. Thus, sieve analysis results are a function of the sample shape distri- bution as well as size distribution.
