Quantum PhysiCs & ConsCiousness

4th - 5th February 2017Rabindra tirtha Complex , Kolkata, india

Dr. T. D. Singh received his Ph.D in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of California at Irvine in 1974. He is a scientist and spiritualist known for his pioneering efforts for the interface and dialogue between science and religion towards a deeper understanding of life and the universe. He has contributed papers in the Journal of American Chemical Society and the Journal of Organic Chemistry in the field of fast proton transfer kinetics in model biological systems using stopped flow technique and NMR spectroscopy. He also worked on gas phase reaction mechanisms using Ion Cyclotron Resonance (ICR) spectroscopy. He was trained in Vaishnava Vedanta studies from 1970 to 1977 under His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He was appointed as the Director of the Bhaktivedanta Institute by Srila Prabhupada in 1974. He has organized four International Conferences on Science and Religion – First and Second World Congress for the Synthesis of Science and Religion (1986 & 1997), First International Conference on the Study of Consciousness within Science(1990) and Second International Congress on Life and its Origin(2004) where many prominent scientists and religious leaders from around the world including several Nobel Laureates participated. He has authored and edited several books including What is Matter and What is life? (1997); Theobiology (1979); Synthesis of Science and Religion:Critical Essays and Dialogues(1987); Thoughts on Synthesis of Science and Religion (2001); Seven Nobel Laureates on Science and Spirituality. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Savijìänam:Scientific Exploration for a Spiritual Paradigm, the Journal of the Bhaktivedanta Institute.

“Now is the time to think scientifically

about consciousness (and its relationship, if

any to the hypothetical immortal soul) and,

most important of all, the time to start the

experimental study of consciousness in a

serious deliberate way.”

— Francis CrickNobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine

Consciousness is mystery for all of us. What is consciousness? How it arises? Even after decades of research by philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, artificial intelligence scientists, biologists, quantum physicists, and many other scholars in myriad of today’s available fields, it is beyond our grasps. Even its precise and clear definition is still not available to us, let alone its comprehension and deeper understanding.

Among all the disciplines, a small but very significant branch of physics, called quantum physics has a special role to unlock the mystery of consciousness. The very development of this field from the early 20th century compelled all the founder of quantum physics, whether, Max Planck, Niels Bohr, Max Born, Erwin Schrodinger, Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisernberg, John Wheeler and many others to consider the role of consciousness. As Heisenberg mentioned, “... it is in quantum theory that the most fundamental changes with respect to the concept of reality have taken place ....”

The present conference aims to explore the mystery of consciousness especially through the lens of quantum physics. The conference aims to explore questions such as these: Is there really such a thing as consciousness? Could quantum physics help us to explore consciousness and if yes, then how? Could we develop a more precise physics of consciousness, perhaps broadening the very meaning and domain of term ‘physics’ as many physicists talk of new science? What specific elements may be required to sketch this new science and its laws? Could age old spiritual and mystical traditions helps us with their profound wisdom to deepen our understanding of consciousness?

The conference will bring together some of the most renowned thinkers from all over the world to reflect on these questions and will provide a feast for thought for all the thoughtful minds through various plenary lectures, panels, workshops and interactive sessions.

O bjec t ives

The conference will focus on the following areas to appreciate the synergy between science and spirituality in the study of consciousness :

Foundations of Quantum mechanics: Lessons learnt•

Physics and Spirituality: Wisdom from religious •traditions.

Towards a holistic life” by Science of Consciousness: •Brain, psychology and health

Quantum imprints in Life•

Theistic interpretations of Quantum mechanics•

Copenhagen Interpretation and alternatives •

SchrÎdinger, Heisenberg, Planck — Thoughts of •Founding Fathers.

Pauli, Einstein, Bohr – Thoughts of Founding Fathers •

Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Mind •

Probability, Statistics and free will•

Unsolved problems of Quantum physics•
