WATER WORKS

In line with being sunsmart is the need to keep hydrated, especially during the warmer months when we tend to lose body fluids quicker due to the heat.

Did you know, that by the time you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated? This is because our thirst mechanism lags behind our actual level of hydration.

Here are some more interesting facts about the role water plays in our bodies....

* Your body weight is approximately 60% water

* Your body uses water in all it’s cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions

* Water does more than just quench your thirst and regulate your body’s temperature, it also keeps the tissues in your body moist. You know how it feels when your eyes, nose or mouth get dry? Keeping your body hydrated helps it retain optimum levels of moisture in these sensitive areas, as well as in the blood, bones and the brain.

* The body loses water through breathing, sweating and digestion, which is why it’s so important to rehy-drate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water.

How much water do you need?

There’s no hard and fast rule, however a good indication of whether or not you are dehydrated can be found by looking at your urine....if it is dark yellow this is a sign that you are more than likely dehydrated. A clear colour is a good sign. The average recommendation is 8 standard glasses, or approximately 2 litres per day. However this should be increased with physical activity.

SUNSMART

Spring is here, and although some days still feel like winter, it’s important to be Sunsmart! Here are some good reasons why....

* In Victoria from September to April, UV reaches damaging levels of 3 and above, increasing the risk of skin cancerAustralia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world for both males and females.* Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.* In Victoria, more than 40,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually* In 2013, 460 Victorians died from skin cancer – more than the state road toll

The best way to be Sunsmart is to follow Sid the Seagull’s advice.....

You name it, it was made on Clay day!

Summery school lunches

It seems like yesterday we were discussing winter lunches for school, and now here we are with summer just around the corner.

Here are some simple, but different lunch ideas that will have your kids intrigued, pleasantly surprised and ready to eat during summer....

Lego Sandwich

If your child is a Lego fanatic this is one sandwich recipe that will see their lunch box empty.

Ingredients:

* 2 slices of bread cut into 4 x 7cm rectangles* 1 slice bread cut into 6 x 1cm circles* Any filling of choice eg. chicken and mayo, ham and cheese

Method: Spread your filling of choice onto one of the rectangles and place the second on top to form a “finger”.Using cream cheese, glue the discs on top in 2 rows to form the Lego press studs.

Keen to provide something other than a sandwich? Why not give these a go....

Cheese and bacon scones

Ingredients:2 cups self-raising flour1 tsp sugar1/4 tsp salt2 tbsp butter4 slices shortcut bacon, diced1 cup tasty cheese, grated3/4 cup milk

Method

Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. In a bowl, sift the flour and add the salt and sugar.Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips. Add the bacon and cheese and combine.Using a blunt knife, stir in the milk until you have made a dough.Lightly knead the dough on a floured surface. Pat dough out to 2cm thick.Cut out using a scone cutter that has been dipped in flour and place, touching together on the baking tray.Brush a little milk on the tops.Bake for 20-25 minutes.

A Little Christmas surprise in their lunch box...

* Use a basic cake recipe to make your prefered cake flavour of choice (chocloate, vanilla).* Cut the cake into triangular shaped wedges* Push a wooden skewer through the middle of the outside edge* Add green food colouring to icing sugar that has been mixed with water to make a smooth, thick consistency* Pipe icing onto top of cake in a zig zag manner* Decorate with mini smarties and sugar snow flakes
