QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER!!! QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER!!! QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER!!!

OCTOBER:

Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ’s Love never ceases to embrace nor surprise us! With the dawn of the

tenth month of the year, we were serenated to the news of the approval of our Sponsorship Application by

Masibambisane Board in The Netherlands. From July without a guaranteed Budget for Food and Supplies

purchase, it now became possible, through this intervention, to afford and have a 4 months (from October

to January 2017) delivery of Food and Supplies from Moloto SuperSpar.

Not only did it end there. It also became possible for us as Staff to afford toiletries which enabled us to come

to work in a presentable and motivated way through a Stipends Budget Allocation. Glory to God! We

therefore invite all those with goodwill, whose eyes are able to peruse this Newsletter, to please follow the

Masibambisane Board’s example and partner with us in meeting the needs of the children we serve here in

Thembalethu, in the Greater KwaMhlanga Area in Mpumalanga Province. (Details at the bottom page).

It is this kind of “blessings from above” that also sparked our long-time associate, Danita Nel’s desire to visit

us with the aim of facilitating a Fine Motor 4 Joy Training for the Early Learning Centres in the Greater

KwaMhlanga Area. Danita is a Speech Therapist and Principal of Pathways-Pretoria. She was accompanied by

her colleague teacher, Angela Mayne. The Training was conducted on the 29th, from 08H: 00 to 14H: 00. It

was offered for free, punctuated with Tea Breaks and Lunch. Sixty (60) Practitioners from Nineteen (19)

Centres (including Phumula, Thembalethu and Vezubuhle) had participated in the Training. It was the second

that Danita had facilitated here, the first having taken place (with a different theme, of course) way back in

October 2013 (attended by Pre-School teachers from our neighbouring Lindokuhle, Phuthumani,

Sibongimpumelelo and Siyaphambili Primary Schools). We therefore hope and pray that God would, once

more, make it possible for Danita to visit us again next year for further Trainings.

As it ended, participants were issued with Certificates and Toolboxes (containing Teaching Aids and

Manuals) that they could use in Class.

Having, earlier on, referred to the concept of partnerships, it is, at this stage, worth mentioning how

honoured and privileged we had been, to have been identified at the beginning of this year by Acorn

Foundation as their beneficiaries. The decision was tactical in nature in that we had just completed a 5 Year

Contract with our Northern Donor the previous year-end. Thanks that we were, through them, able to

survive the aftermath of this Contract-end. Besides donating Stationery, School Textbooks and Study Guides,

Puzzles, Tissue Papers and Office Chairs to our Centre, they also established (based in Midrand) new

partnerships for us in that they would order and pay for meat at KwaMhlanga OBC and then ask us to go and

collect. What a generosity! Equally worth mentioning is the fact that the “new partners” also made their

mark in this relationship by giving Prices at discounted rates!

As if not enough, on this month in question, they paid us a working visit whose aim was to install a Vegetable

Tunnel in our garden. They also donated 16 bags of Organic Compost. What remains is to allow the seeds to

germinate and then start transplanting them into the Tunnel and the garden over. What a boost to our

Feeding Scheme and members of the community who, from time to time, purchase some vegetables and as

a result, generate some income for our Organization.

Meanwhile, it is expected that our harvest would continue to improve, year after year.

Thanks to the intervention by Sharon Tlou, the Farming Trainer from KwaMhlanga Department of Agriculture

(based in the Legislature Office), in parting state-of-the-art knowledge, skills and information to our

caregivers-turned-farmers (parents/guardians of children attending at the Centre who work in the Vegetable

Garden). In addition to plant-spacing for various crops, she also addressed the issue of Pest Control.

Hardly a week had past when Sharon’s colleague from Kwaggafontein invited us to assemble at Mrs

Maseko’s Vegetable Garden Project (in our vicinity) in order to collect Vegetable Seeds (Onion, Cabbage,

Beetroot, Pumpkin, Butternut, Carrots, Green Beans, Green Pepper, Lettuce, Tomato, Spinach) and

Insecticides (Bulldock). In short, we remain grateful for the support that we continue to get as an

Organization from our Local Government Departments of Agriculture. With the apparent Thembisile Hani

Municipal Water Supply challenge in this area, we hope that they would move with speed into relieving us

by way of a Borehole.

On the academic side, we held an Afternoon Assembly to pray for those who were to start their End-of-the-

Year Final School Examination. The Grades 12 learners were starting theirs on the 26th, whilst the Primary

and Junior Secondary Schools were scheduled for November the 14th and 17th, respectively.

Subsequent to that, our focus has been onto encouraging children to bring along to the Centre their School

Books for Revision and Study as a way of preparing themselves for their Final School Examination, as it were.

Having analysed the children’s End-of-the 3rd School Term Examination Reports/Results, our respective

teachers were on the alert to attend to those in need of special assistance so that, as they prepare

themselves to sit for their Final 2016 Examination, they all pass and graduate into their next School Grades.

In addition, we also gave space to Grades 12 learners from our community to attend Evening Study Classes

in preparation for their Final Examination as well.

Meanwhile, it is also befitting at this stage, that we should commend our children on their off-the-Class

conduct towards our establishment of an Orchard alongside the Vegetable Garden. Twenty (20) Peach and

Pomegranate trees (ten, respectively), were donated to us by the Acorn Foundation (See September

Newsletter). Thanks for their time and labour in making this a reality.

It is hoped also that Social Worker Simphiwe Seswike from KwaMhlanga’s Group Sessions with them would

help shape them into mature, responsible citizens of our Republic. Topics they covered include, among

others, Positive Peer Pressure, Secret of Happiness, I can understand and be understood, as well as I know

what’s important. Contact Sessions were started during the September School Holiday, to date.

Perhaps as an important stakeholder in our community, our Organization was invited to Thembalethu CHC‘s

Open Day on the 6th at 10H: 00. As it was explained by the Clinic’s Operational Manager, Mr PG Mtshweni,

the primary aim of the day was to bring services to the members of the community, thus enabling them to

undergo, just mention few, Eye, TB, Cervical Cancer, HIV, Diabetes and Hypertension Tests on the spot. In

addition, the Department of Home Affairs Officials were also in attendance to assist those in need of proper

documentations. Besides the community’s Local Ward Councillor, Mr Sipho Ngoma’s attendance, were also

Health Dignitaries from the District. Most importantly, the Clinic had used the opportunity to announce the

yet-to-be-introduced Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution Programme (CCMDD).

Whilst still on these “community-issues-front, let us take this opportunity to thank Sesi Nomsa Tlou and her

Community Works Programme (CWP) colleagues for rendering their time and labour into coming to clean

our premises. Hopefully, more would follow your example, Sesi Nomsa!

Reciprocally and as a “Community Centre/CBO”, we also offered our premises as a Venue for community

members to meet and market their Golden Products.

That is not all! Not only do ordinary members of the community get to benefit from our establishment. Even

our Staff does, in terms of Trainings which empower them to be the best in the work that they do! By way of

example, our FDP (Family Development Programme) Practitioners, affectionately known as Care Workers,

had taken an advantage of the recent September School Holiday (from the 30th/09 to the 10th/ 10) to attend

a for-free 5-days-long Home Based Care Training at the Charity Church (in the proximity of Einel Filling

Station) from the 3rd to the 7th, between 08H: 00 and 16H: 00.

Most importantly, they were, together with other attendees (estimated at 60), capacitated on, inter alia,

Adherence Counselling for ART (Anti-retroviral Treatment) as well as Counselling and Testing. Facilitators

were Dr Masha and Lindiwe Nkosi from the FPD (Foundation for Professional Development) in Pretoria. At

the end of the Training, participants were handed two (2) Manuals with the undertaking that their

Certificates would be available for collection within a three months period.

Consequently, our thanks as Management Team and the Board go to the Nakekela Manager, Dorcas

Mathibela as a convener of the Training, for her thoughtfulness in inviting our Staff to be part of the event.

Equipped now to be the real Salt and Light of our Greater KwaMhlanga Area, we hope that they would

become real agents of healthy transformation of our communities.

SEPTEMBER:

Once more, the practical acts of Jesus Christ’s Love were in action. For example, there was an event that was

organized by the Education Department at KwaMhlanga. At the end, it was decided by the Officials there

that the left-over Food Hampers be donated at our Centre for our children.

Again, it was at this period that we have received a donation of ten (10) Peach and ten (10) Pomegranate

trees from Acorn Foundation with the aim of partnering with us in establishing an Orchard for our Centre.

Expectation is that more variety of Fruit Trees would be donated in future.

At the same time, we had just come out of a School Holiday, beginning the last 2016 School Term. As a

result, children were submitting their End-of-the 3rd School Term Examination Reports/Results where the

focus was on encouraging them to design their “School Performance Barometer Graphs”.

As children roll their sleeves in their education, we remain encouraged and motivated by some community

members who, from time to time, make Clothing Donations for them. Equally, we are heartened by our

caregivers’ (parents/guardians of children attending at the Centre) commitment and dedication in working in

our Vegetable Garden with the view to producing fresh vegetables for our Feeding Scheme.

Furthermore, we also had an opportunity to host our Amazing Graces friends from Centurion. A number of

activities had taken place, inter alia, English Story Books reading, Farming God’s Way and Cooking Lessons.

In the final analysis, we would like to commend our caregivers in leading the process of an establishment of

an Orchard by hastening to extend the current Vegetable Garden to give space for planting the Fruits Trees!

AUGUST:

We remain grateful to our friends from the Wapadrand Church in Pretoria for the Computers that they have

donated to our Centre for our children. Hence the prospect of our teachers to transfer Computer Skills to the

children.

In the same breath, we are also grateful to the Masibambisane Board in The Netherlands for the Budget

Allocation which they have provided us that enabled us to purchase beading materials in Pretoria for our

Beading Class.

Meanwhile, we also take pride in our Extra-Mural Activities. Both our Netball and Soccer Teams have been

motivated by an acquisition of new Sports Kit. Besides their Fridays practice, they also organize matches

against local teams. The younger ones too, get an opportunity to indulge themselves into various games and

puzzles.

Academically, we supported those who still owed their respective Schools Monetary Donations (ranging

between R40 00 and R60 00) by paying on their behalf so that they could be able to get their School

Reports/Results at the end of the School Year. Further than that, we were honoured and privileged to have

been invited by the Amazing Graces to attend a Democracy Education Session in Hammanskraal.

As a cherry on top, we were pleased to offer Nakekela a Venue to conduct HIV Workshop for the Upbeat

Youth Centre youth.
