Member, Fraternity Communications Association

This issue’s feature article hit home to me. As a working mother and dedicated volun-teer, my plate is definitely full! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I started volunteering for the Fraternity as an Advisor and House Association Trea-surer after college graduation, followed by many other roles, such as Director of Finance, International Vice President-Collegians and President of The Leadership Institute—Women with Purpose Board. All of these roles have given me the satisfaction of serving our sisterhood and also the op-portunity to make connections with sisters across the globe. The Alumnae Development team has made great strides in locating valuable volunteers for many efforts. Read page 7 for ideas about how to share your talent with the Fraternity. I hope you are inspired!

The ambition and hard work of our volunteers and International Headquarters staff has paid off! The Fraternity is launching the Alpha Experience, Alpha Gamma Delta’s updated and fresh approach to new member programming! A revised New Member Guide, supporting the Alpha Gamma Delta Experi-ence website and New Member Coordinator resources are all components of this innovative program. We hope that with this new programming, new member retention will be in-creased. A special thanks to Liz Harriss York, the collegiate sisters of Gamma Phi Chapter, Lauren Allen Hammack, Lee Woodham Digiovanni, Mary Farrell, Jill Lewman and Eliza-beth Hoover for their tireless dedication to this project. More about the Alpha Experience is on page 36.

Significant changes to our Alumnae Dues Program were made this year. In addition to moving the campaign start

date from August to June, we encouraged all Alpha Gams to pay their Alumnae Dues by July 15 to be entered into a drawing for a gourmet coffeemaker and Alpha Gamma Delta coffee mug. Congratulations to Dona Maddux Cooper from Epsi-lon Kappa Chapter—Pittsburg State University. By supporting the Fraternity through paying Alumnae Dues, she is receiv-ing the coffeemaker and mug! Nearly 1,500 sisters have paid their Alumnae Dues. We have made much progress, but that is still only three percent of our living alumnae sisters. Please pay your Alumnae Dues! More about the Fraternity’s Alumnae Dues Program is on page 35.

In addition to paying your Alumnae Dues, please support the Alpha Gamma Delta Foun-dation. Starting on page 14, you’ll see the Foundation’s an-nual list of donors. Many thanks to the numerous donors listed. I hope everyone will consider being a part of supporting Alpha Gamma Delta by a generous gift to the Foundation!

As the cover wrap of this issue states, the Quarterly is going green! Starting in winter 2010, two issues per year will be electronic—winter and summer. The other two issues—spring and fall—will be printed issues. To ensure you will continue to receive four issues of the Quar-terly per year, please sign up for the electronic Quarterly! Also, to commemorate the centen-nial issue of the Quarterly, the magazine is undergoing a make-over! More about the electronic Quarterly and the upcoming changes to the magazine are on page 40.

Much like our collegiate chap-ters and the financial institu-tions of the business world, the Fraternity has been focusing on finances this fiscal year, includ-ing implementing contingency

plans for the current economic environment and utilizing better internal systems. Alpha Gamma Delta is making strides in the ar-eas of membership, scholarship and extension. Our collegiate chapters’ overall GPA is 3.05! We have some smart squirrels among our membership! Our membership has increased in total new members and new members being initiated this past year. We hope to see an even greater increase with our new Alpha Experience. There have been some sad and dif-ficult membership situations in that we have resolved three chapters this past year: Zeta Mu Chapter–Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Alpha Kappa Chapter–Bowling Green State University and Theta Phi Chapter–University of Tam-pa. The Fraternity’s extension efforts have continued with the installation of Theta Iota Chapter—Western Kentucky University, Westminster College in Missouri and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Learn more about how to extend to campuses close to you on page 38.

Thank you to all of the vol-unteers who help make Alpha Gamma Delta thrive!

An everydAy Commitment.

Our plates are full of commitment. We are intelligent, hard-working women; no doubt as Alpha

Gams, we are going into the world each day and truly making an impact within our communities

and our families. How can we meet all of our obligations and still make time for Alpha Gamma

Delta? In this article, we’ll give you reasons why you CAN play a role in Alpha Gamma Delta,

Think back to your time as a collegian. What memories can you recall? Perhaps it was staying up all night watching movies with your sisters. Maybe you remember the time when your sisters reached out to you in a time of need. Or perhaps you remember meeting your best friend during your new member retreat. Whatever your collegiate memories, they likely have one thing in common—connections. The foundation of a women’s Fraternity is all about building connections. Why not continue making connections as an alumna?

Jennifer Monk, Epsilon–University of Kentucky, and recently-appointed Volunteer Service Team (VST) member, came right out of college with a desire to build connections. She got involved with Alpha Gamma Delta after graduation when she received an invitation to an alumnae event near her house. She thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know the city and meet other Alpha Gams. “I was pretty young for the group, but they were happy to see me,” Jennifer says. “Getting involved in the alumnae chapter, getting to know the city, asking [sisters] questions about dentists they recommend and what side

of town to live on [are all benefits of being involved in an alumnae chapter or club].”

To Jennifer, being a busy woman was no excuse for not volunteering. For five years after college graduation, she was Atlanta Junior Circle President, worked full-time and took classes at night. “It’s a matter of being organized and having people there to help you out,” she says. After serving as Junior Circle President, Jennifer became Atlanta Alumnae Chapter President and was recently appointed as a Fraternity Programs Specialist on VST. As a Fraternity Programs Specialist, Jennifer will help maintain and establish new Fraternity programs, such as Junior Circle, Alpha Gam Always and Rosebuds. She also plays a role in International Reunion Day (IRD) for her area.

Building and maintaining connections as a young mother can be difficult. With little time in the day for ourselves, the childbearing years are definitely challenging. Fortunately, there are ways for young mothers to continue to connect with sisters during these seemingly frenzied years. The Rosebuds

Building a ConneCtion.program was established in 2006 to foster strong adult-girl relationships, to provide fun activities in which members and girls can participate and to increase visibility of Alpha Gamma Delta in our communities. Rosebuds is an ideal way to include your loved ones in mutually beneficial activities. From walking on a nature trail or visiting a museum to a weekend at the beach or volunteering at a walk-a-thon, the opportunities for Rosebuds involvement are plentiful. It also gives you an opportunity to meet other Alpha Gam moms!

For Alpha Gamma Deltas who don’t live near an alumnae chapter or club, collegiate chapter or Junior Circle, the Rose Sisters program is a way to meet sisters. Rose Sisters connect electronically through a Yahoo! Group, sharing stories about their families, careers and upcoming activities. At International Reunion Day (IRD) 2008, several Rose Sisters gathered in Berlin, Germany, and celebrated Alpha Gamma Delta sisterhood.

Jennifer urges Alpha Gams “to branch out and get to know people, gain new skills and never stop learning.”

Our Purpose tells us to “contribute to the world’s work.” How are you living this line of the Purpose in your daily life? One way to do this is to make an impact on Alpha Gamma Delta.

Anna D’Agostino Clarke, Sigma–Univer-sity of Illinois, served on the Marketing Task Force and evaluated the Frater-nity’s Bank One credit card program. During a brief time of unemployment as her former employer relocated across the country, Anna put her professional background to good use for the Frater-nity. “The women on the [Marketing Task Force] were really energetic and had a lot of great ideas,” Anna recalls. “It was great to connect with people from differ-ent areas of the country with marketing backgrounds like myself. It’s always good to build a network of people in your field.” With over 20 years of market-ing experience, Anna is now the Vice President of Marketing and Communica-tions for the Chicago Theological Soci-ety, which manages the Brookfield Zoo.

Anna’s position on the Marketing Task Force is an example of a SWATT project, or Sisters With Available Time and Talent. SWATT allows sisters who have a unique and/or professional skill to bring to the Fraternity for a short-term project. Bonnie Brown, Director of Alumnae Development, leads the

SWATT program and is always looking for new volunteers. Whether you’re skilled at flower arranging, finance applications, conversation skills or website creation, there is a job for everyone on the SWATT team. Busy moms, career women and graduate school students alike can con-tribute to the SWATT team.

For members who want to be integrated into the daily workings of our collegiate chapters and/or alumnae chapters and clubs, consider serving on the Volunteer Service Team (VST), being an officer in your area alumnae chapter or club or serving as a collegiate advisor. The VST has nearly 200 opportunities for involve-ment, ranging from Recruitment Special-ist and Education Committee Member to Province Director and Area Coordinator. To serve on VST, one must be appointed by International Council; however, avail-ability and desire to serve are major con-siderations for these appointments. VST appointments are for two year terms; the most recent appointments were officially enacted in June 2009. Serving on VST allows Alpha Gamma Deltas the opportu-nity to view the Fraternity at the regional and international level.

Being involved in an alumnae chapter or club allows you to interact with women in your geographical area and help coordinate opportunities for sisterhood, community service and collegiate chapter assistance. Jennifer Monk, who served as Alumnae Chapter and Club President for the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter for four years at a young age, wants to break down the myth of hierarchy within the volunteer system. “[Alpha Gamma Delta] is our group,” Jennifer says. “We have to make it [work]. Let’s help each other make [the Fraternity] great.”

In addition to helping the Fraternity with your time, you can also help by paying your Alumnae Dues and making a dona-tion to the Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion. By paying your $35 Alumnae Dues, you will be contributing to the Fraternity’s Operating Fund, which supports the Quarterly, website and support for Inter-national Convention and other Fraternity events. The Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion is the only charity in the world that exists to support the Fraternity and her sisters. The Foundation provides scholar-ships to Alpha Gams, supports sisters in need and provides funding for educa-tional and training programs. Currently, only three percent of alumnae give to the Foundation. Please consider making a contribution to the Foundation this year.

Volunteering for Alpha Gamma Delta has so many benefits; you can make an impact on others, reconnect or build connections with sisters and even benefit your overall career worth. Human Resources expert Alexandria Hayden Fontecchio, Omega–University of Akron, believes that volunteering is “absolutely” important on your resume. With over 13 years of human resources experience, Alexandria owns her own business—Bell Recruiting Limited—which provides HR generalist services to businesses and corporations. If you have just graduated from college and you do not have a lot of experience, Alexandria says that volunteer work shows commitment, time management skills and outside interests. All of these qualities are pleasing to potential employers. “Many companies have some [interest in] community giv-ing, where they give back to the com-munity,” Alexandria says. “So, any time you volunteer, I think that just shows that your goals are in line with the company that you’re working for.”

In today’s economy, networking is as important as ever. With over 80,000

living alumnae, Alpha Gamma Delta is a great place to hone your networking skills. A sister you meet at International Reunion Day (IRD) could connect you to your dream job or an alumna you meet through your work as a Chapter Advisor could link you to a new client or prospect. You never know what opportu-nities lie ahead unless you continue to make connections by volunteering and/or becoming involved in the Fraternity. In fact, Anna D’Agostino Clarke (quoted earlier in this article) received helpful tips for an interview, thanks to an Alpha Gamma Delta connection who worked for the company in which Anna was interviewing.

Alexandria says that while social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook are wonderful to build your network, you could be cultivating a lot of opportunities within your volunteer work. “[Volunteering is] very important, regard-less of where you are in your career,” comments Alexandria.

Whether helping with a local philan-thropic organization or mentoring a

collegiate chapter, sisterhood contin-ues to build when you give back to the Fraternity. “I love when I see an Alpha Gam resume come through,” Alexandria says. “I am going to give them a call regardless. Maybe they aren’t fit for the job I’m looking for, but I definitely want to help them. It’s a great way to continue to enhance my sisterhood experience but also to enhance others as well.”

Soccer practice. Graduate school exams. Meetings. SWATT Team. Mentor-ing a collegiate chapter. Contributing to the Foundation. Our plates may be full, but if we give a little bit more of our time, we are sure to reap the benefits of Alpha Gamma Delta involvement. You may meet a sister from a different collegiate chapter who becomes your best friend. You may encourage a collegiate chapter to raise more money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. You may even build a connection that leads to the per-fect career. You’ll never know until you make it happen.

Epsilon Epsilon–William Jewell CollegeIn addition to a game night, bowling mixer and Homecom-ing activities, Epsilon Epsilon Chapter hosted a campus-wide food fight. Currently, William Jewell College is building a $12.5 million sorority com-plex, which is scheduled to open in August 2009. All pro-ceeds from the food fight were used to dedicate a suite in the complex to Hanna Dobber-stine, who has been our Chap-ter Advisor for 34 years. This year our chapter raised over $2,000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation through our annual event called Trick-or-Treat for Those Who Can’t on Halloween. We organized our annual Knock Out Diabetes dodgeball tournament to raise even more money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion as well as prepared to participate in a local Relay for Life event. Although a lot of changes are in store for our chapter during the upcoming year, we are excited to move forward and become an even more successful chapter. As always, we continue to strive to be the most involved Greek organization on our campus. –Anna Warm

Epsilon Omega–Truman State UniversityEpsilon Omega Chapter has been involved in numerous ac-

tivities this semester. We have done a great job of improving our visibility on campus with activities such as our Get Cozy with Alpha Gams and our Hug an Alpha Gam Day. We are also proud of our scholarship improvement. Our chapter received second place last se-mester out of five Panhellenic sororities on campus, and we hope to improve even further. Additionally, we are happy with our $1,078 donation to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foun-dation for last semester. We were able to raise the money through our annual philan-thropy events Frats at Bat and Say it with a Squirrel. We are excited for our spring 2009 new member class and their contribution to another philan-thropy event, Sweet Talk with the Alpha Gams.

Delta Omicron– University of Nevada, Las Vegas Delta Omicron Chapter has taken part in many activities such as UNLV’s Greek Week in the spring of 2008. We took first place for spirit, service and philanthropy and placed third overall. We have had sev-eral sisterhood events, which have really inspired our chap-ter to have a stronger bond. During one of the sisterhood events we came together and voted in the 2008 elections. In our annual Texas Hold’em Tournament in 2008, we raised nearly $1,000. In our Battle of the Gods philanthropy event we raised $2,828 and collected over 2,400 children’s books for the Kids to Kids literacy program.

Zeta Eta– Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Throughout the past year, Zeta Eta Chapter has participated in a variety of campus and community events, including the Greek Lip Sync contest, Panhellenic Council’s Greek Week and interfraternity sports. All of these events have helped to make our sisters become very well recognized across campus. We presented ourselves to other members of the Greek community through reverse trick-or-treating, where we baked and delivered Halloween cookies to vari-ous fraternities. We have also taken part in several commu-nity service events in the sur-rounding area, such as Project Linus blanket making, Relay for Life and the Victorian Stroll in downtown Troy. We also spent a great deal of time and effort raising money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foun-dation through Money Wars, our annual 24-hour volleyball tournament and co-hosting a Rock-a-Thon with another fraternity. Our sisters continue to have a strong desire to par-ticipate in bonding events and sisterhood activities through-out the semester, especially to welcome our 20 new members from fall and spring recruit-ment.

Omega– University of Akron Omega Chapter started our year with Formal Recruit-ment, with our Bid Day theme of Tiffany & Co. Our new members participated in “mocktails,” incorporating our colors into a “One Love” Bob Marley theme. We partici-pated in Greek Week and also had many sisterhood events, including Warm Fuzzies, where each sister gave each other positive notes on their character or other encouraging words. This spring, we visited Zeta Iota Chapter–Miami University and Theta Chi Chapter–Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to help with their recruitment. We loved helping out our sis-ters and are very proud of both chapters’ hard work! We then held our own recruitment and reached our total. We raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society at the Uni-versity of Akron’s Relay for Life. We then ended the year with our Red Rose Formal and Hugs Day. We are looking forward to another great year in the fall!

Zeta– Ohio University The women of Zeta Chapter have had a very successful and exciting 2008-2009 school year. We moved back to school a week early to prepare for recruitment and par-ticipate in Spirit Week, during which we went door-to-door to collect canned goods for those less fortunate. After an excellent recruitment and the

addition of several wonder-ful women to our chapter, we held Initiation in the first few weeks of winter, followed by the Feast of Roses. In addi-tion, our chapter participated in several Homecoming activi-ties, a Dad’s Weekend brunch and a Greek garage sale. At the garage sale, we were able to work with other sorority members on campus to raise money by selling items that we no longer use. We also attended a Greeks Go Green seminar, which taught us what we can do in order to be more environment friendly. We ranked third for best grades among all the sororities on campus.

–Christine Friscic

Alpha Iota– Baldwin-Wallace College The school year started off busy, as Alpha Iota Chapter raced to plan and practice for recruitment activities. September was packed with recruitment events, but the sisters of Alpha Iota Chapter were happy to welcome 20 new members. The rest of the fall focused on sisterhood and acclimating our new mem-bers. We went to Akron to

support the sisters of Omega Chapter at their annual Lip Jam. It was a fun way to help other Alpha Gams support the Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion. Mr. Baldwin-Wallace, our annual philanthropy event, had quite a large turnout and helped the sisters of Alpha Iota Chapter raise $500. Before the semester started in January, some sisters traveled to Miami University to help Zeta Iota Chapter with their Formal Recruitment. All in all it has been a busy year for the sisters of Alpha Iota Chapter. We are always glad to spend time together no matter what the circumstances.

–Hayley Kotowski

Alpha Lambda– Ohio State University Alpha Gam is becoming a force on the Ohio State University campus. We have continued to get our name out around campus in a positive light by holding an Ultimate Frisbee tournament to raise money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. We worked on improving our recruitment events, obtaining 43 women throughout the past year. A major part of our success

was due to multiple recruit-ment training sessions. These workshops were critical in polishing our recruitment strategies. Teaching the women new to recruitment what we like to focus on is a priority. In the fall quarter, we won the Letters at the Library, a competition between all of the sororities on campus. The winner was the chapter that had the most women (based on a percentage of the total women in the chapter) going to the library to study. We are placing more emphasis on academics and continuing our high academic standards by holding a 3.25 average as a chapter. All of these efforts are helping to expand our chapter in numerous ways.

Oklahoma

Upsilon– University of Oklahoma The 2008-2009 term saw an explosion of accomplishments here at Upsilon Chapter. This fall we improved in grades and welcomed many wonder-ful women into our sister-hood. In the fall semester, many fun events were planned for philanthropy as well as sisterhood. We participated in Arbor Day and local Greek events. Parents had a great time celebrating Alpha Gam with their daughters during Family Weekend. Families were encouraged to attend A Night at the Arts presented by Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and Oklahoma University Alumni Association, and many

enjoyed watching the football game the next day. With a newly elected group of officers, we expect continued growth and positive changes in our chapter.

–Lizzy Howell Epsilon Xi– East Central University In the fall, Epilson Xi Chap-ter had Formal Recruitment, along with Continuous Open Recruitment (COR) events and pledged two new members. Our first spaghetti dinner was called Defeating Diabetes One Plate at a Time, which raised over $300 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Also in the fall, we had our annual Hay Maze, which had a petting zoo, corn and hay maze and a huge slide! COR in the spring brought five new members into our chapter, just in time for our spring dance. At the end of March, we held out biggest philanthropy event, Squirrel-a-Palooza, for the fifth year in a row! Pennsylvania Alpha Epsilon– Westminster College Our chapter’s goal for the 2008-2009 term was to become a member of the Jewel Society. Last semester, we hosted The Newlywed Game, featuring the 10 Homecoming candi-dates. We also participated in a T-shirt sale and sang Christmas carols for the New Wilming-ton community. These events helped our chapter raise over $1,300. In order to reach our $2,000 Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation Jewel status goal, we hosted a campus-wide event called Battle of the Sexes and sold T-shirts.

–Christina Alducka

Alpha Omega– Duquesne University After becoming a member of the Jewel Society and being named the Most Improved Chapter at International Con-vention, we began the school year with our annual Juvenile Diabetes Walk in Schenley Park. As the year progressed, our Vice President Recruit-ment worked diligently to plan one of the best Formal Recruitments we’ve ever had with “Timeless. Unique. Outrageously Sweet.” as the theme. Recruitment ended with 18 wonderful additions to our chapter who helped make Grab-a-Greek, our annual philanthropy event, a greater success than ever. During this student-run auction, repre-sentatives from each Greek

organization on campus were auctioned off to the student body with a gift certificate or tickets to a sporting event. This year we exceeded our prior goals and raised over $4,680 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

–Melissa J. Eppolito

Zeta Beta– Lehigh University As a chapter, Zeta Beta Chap-ter was dedicated to continuing its involvement on campus and within the community. We participated in many campus wide activities and community service events. Sisters took part in a breast cancer awareness walk and Spooktacular, a Hal-loween event with crafts and games that provided a fun and

educational activity for children in the community. The Hill Rocks the Vote was an event for Greek support and promotion of the 2008 presidential elec-tion. Our philanthropy chair also coordinated our annual Strykes for Tykes. We spon-sored a bowling tournament to raise funds for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. It was a major success this year! The Zeta Beta Chapter sisters not only enjoyed spending time and learning from each other, but held scholarship, faculty and alumni dinners, where we were able to learn and inter-act with Lehigh professors.

–Michelle Gee

Zeta Gamma– Gannon University Zeta Gamma Chapter has been involved in many activities this year, especially focusing on improving our visibility on campus by designating certain attire on different days of the week. Efforts were also made to gather the chapter for lunch to strengthen relationships and spend more time together as a chapter. We started out the quarter with recruitment, receiving nine new members who spent Tuesday evenings going through the new member education process. A fashion show highlighted appropriate clothing for occasions such as Initiation and other formal events. Speed dating was anoth-er fun event we used to encour-age communication and to get to know each other better. As a chapter, we also paired with the Panhellenic Council and cancer survivors in the area to promote breast cancer awareness by sell-ing candy, as well as calendars.

With a focus on philanthropy, Epsilon Phi Chapter sisters organized three different events to raise money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

Zeta Kappa– University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown With scholarship tips in hand from International Convention, Zeta Kappa Chapter offi-cers implemented many new programs to ensure academic success in the chapter. The hard work and extra effort paid off when we ended up hold-ing the highest grade point average. We raised money for Walk for Diabetes and later participated in the event, once again sponsoring a young girl with juvenile diabetes. For Halloween, we volunteered with the Richland Police Department to bag candy for area children. Our efforts were rewarded when the chief of the Richland Police Department recommended our chapter for a community service award. With the arrival of spring came a successful recruitment, adding 10 new members to our chapter.

Tennessee

Theta Tau– Belmont University The women of Theta Tau Chap-ter have represented the Fra-ternity proudly on the Belmont campus these past months. Our chapter received the most hon-ors at Belmont’s 2008 Greek Awards and also maintained the highest Greek women’s grade point average for the spring and fall semesters. Our chapter was honored to send the initiating team for the re-installation of Theta Iota Chapter at Western Kentucky University. Addi-tionally, we take pride in our work for the community. Early in the fall, we participated in a local Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Walk for the

Cure. In October, we raised a considerable amount of money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation by asking door-to-door for donations during our annual Trick-or-Treat event. To continue with tradition, we also volunteered at Vanderbilt’s Diabetes Family Day, which was quite a success.

Texas

Epsilon Phi– Texas Woman’s University Epsilon Phi Chapter began the school year by welcoming 13 beautiful new ladies following

Formal Recruitment. We hosted the First Annual Walkin’ Out Diabetes Walk, Dine Out for Diabetes at Applebee’s and an Alpha Gam Wing Eating Con-test. We were able to raise over $2,000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. In support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, we teamed up with our sisters from Epsilon Psi–University of Texas at Dallas and participated in their annual walk in Plano, Texas. Academics play a major role in our sisterhood, and for at least the last three years, we have had the highest Greek grade point average on campus. We are always striving to serve as a positive example for our campus and were thrilled to be 2008 Greek Week champions. We have had an amazing year

and cannot wait to see what the future has in store.

–Andrea Ainsworth Epsilon Psi– University of Texas at Dallas For Epsilon Psi Chapter, the year was filled with much joy, excitement and community service. We attended events with children at the Scottish Rite Hospital of Dallas and raised over $4,000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion through a raffle and our annual Mr. University of Texas male beauty pageant. Epsilon Psi Chapter also participated in UT-Serve, a campus-wide philanthropy event, and we teamed-up with members of Epsilon Phi Chapter and the Dallas Alumnae Chapter to walk in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Walk. After an amazing recruitment this year, we added 23 new sisters to our chapter. This year, we also began the Delta Experi-ence for our graduating seniors, and we piloted the Automated Collegiate Online Reporting Network. In addition, several of our members applied for scholarships from the Founda-tion, and we are very proud of our two members who were recipients of $750 scholarships this year!

Delta Nu– University of Calgary Delta Nu Chapter has been involved in various activities over the course of the past year. We recruited 13 women through Formal Recruitment, achieving quota. Some of the members of our chapter volunteered at a Football Club Fundraiser in October, raising $1,100. We organized and held out first annual event, 24 Hour Teeter Totter for Tots, which raised over $7,000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Founda-tion and the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The annual Sweet-heart’s Ball was held, giving all ofour ladies an opportunity to dress up and spend an eve-ning with one another. We also held a workshop to generate some excellent ideas and goals for our chapter and its future.

Delta Zeta– University of British Columbia At the year-end Panhellenic Awards, Delta Zeta Chap-ter was again awarded the Marjorie Leeming Award for the best all-around fraternity. Individual members were also recognized for their scholar-ship, leadership, volunteer work, athletics and contri-bution to the University of British Columbia community. To prepare for recruitment this year, Delta Zeta Chapter took

the support we have received since our beginning in 2006. So we, sisters of Theta Chi Chapter, thank you all!

Washington

Iota– University of Washington Many sisterhood and phil-anthropic events, multiple exchanges with fraternity gentlemen and our successful philanthropy, Mr. Greek, has kept our chapter very busy. However, even with all this excitement, we have been able to hold onto our rank as

second in grades out of 16 sororities on campus. Most of our work went toward plan-ning and executing our Mr. Greek philanthropy. Sixteen fraternities participated in a comical pageant in order to raise funds for the Treehouse for Kids Foundation as well as the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. We exceeded last year’s total of $45,000 and raised $63,000 this year!

our chapter. The new members were then initiated on Novem-ber 15. The sisters of Theta Nu Chapter came together to par-ticipate in many philanthropy events throughout fall 2008. These activities included the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Walk to Cure Diabetes and the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, for which we joined the brothers of Alpha Kappa Lambda. In October, our chap-ter had a Denim for Diabetes drive, where designer jeans were sold for 50 to 80 percent off in order to raise money for diabetes. While being ex-tremely active in philanthropy, we received the highest grade point average on campus for the 12th consecutive semester. Five sisters received 4.0 GPAs and over half had GPAs of 3.0 or higher. We are thrilled with the accomplishments of fall 2008 and are excited to continue the trend!

–Elizabeth Walker

Theta Chi– Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University In the last few months in Theta Chi Chapter, we have gained a much stronger sisterhood under the guidance of our wonderful Leadership Consul-tants. We started off the spring semester with a very success-ful recruitment, doubling last year’s new member class. For our philanthropy week-end in April, we organized a round robin wallyball tourna-ment called the Battle of the Courts. Sisters helped coach while cheering on our peers and raising money for a great cause! During this growth and sophistication, we are pursu-ing our goals with more deter-mination. It was amazing to put smiles on chil-dren’s faces as we made their stuffed animals feel better and showed them that being in a hospital isn’t that scary after all. Some of our other philanthropy events involved raising money and collecting food for Winnipeg Harvest for the Thanksgiving season. We also held a highly successful Cupcake Sale for purchasing World Vision gifts for third world countries. The year was a fast-paced one, but surely a wonderful one; we have grown closer as a sisterhood and hope to continue doing so.

Introducing the Alpha Experience!

Alpha Gamma Delta and Theta Sigma Upsilon: Celebrating 50 Years

Alpha Gamma Delta is commemorating its 50th anniversary of its union with

Theta Sigma Upsilon national fraternity. At International Convention on June 29, 1959, Alpha Gamma Delta happily solidified the union of Theta Sigma Upsilon with Alpha Gamma Delta, adding 13 chapters to our roll. Similar traditions and ideals encour-aged the joining of these two groups; in addition, all of the new chapters were installed on colleges and universities that did not have current Alpha Gamma Delta representation. As a result of this union, the Fraternity grew significantly, from 33,000 members to 39,000 members. Past Grand President Lulu Good Vo-gelsang, who formally announced the unanimous decision to acquire Theta Sigma Upsilon, said, “It is a privilege for Alpha Gamma Delta to bring into the Fra-ternity these women who come from the fine educational institutions of the country, where for many years the instructors and teachers of our youth have come.” Former Theta Sigma Upsilon chapters that became Alpha Gamma Delta chapters include:• Alpha Rho-Temple University • Alpha Tau-Edinboro University of Pennsylvania

• Alpha Sigma-Indiana University of Pennsylvania• Alpha Upsilon-Central Michigan University• Beta Theta-University of Wisconsin- Whitewater• Gamma Kappa-Northwestern State University• Gamma Lambda-Longwood University• Gamma Mu-James Madison University• Delta Iota-California State University, Chico• Epsilon Kappa-Pittsburg State University• Epsilon Iota-University of Northern Colorado• Epsilon Lambda-University of Central Missouri• Epsilon Mu-Fort Hays State University Theta Sigma Upsilon was pleased with the opportunity to join a strong, success-ful fraternity like Alpha Gamma Delta. Theta Sigma Upsilon Founder Frances Hashbarger, the first Theta Sigma Upsilon initiate into Alpha Gamma Delta, said, “Our hearts are gladdened as we unite our rose with your roses, our pearl with your pearl, our ideals with your ideals. We hope to shed radiance on our lives with the new we find in Alpha Gamma Delta, and to make the Purpose of Alpha Gamma Delta our Purpose—that those who know us will esteem Alpha Gamma Delta for her attain-ments, revere her for her purposes and love her for her womanhood.”

Managing the extension pro-cess is much like searching for a new job. It is complicated, takes good strategy to ensure the best match between the campus and Alpha Gamma Delta and requires significant preparation and cul-tivation. So, when the Fraternity proudly announces a new colony, what had to occur to get to that “job offer?”

It begins with the announcement stat-ing that a campus is looking for a new chapter. The Fraternity’s Extension Committee, led by Sheila Kelley Sola, In-ternational Vice President-Extension and International Headquarters staff diligently work to gather data, compare the find-ings to establish key criteria for evaluat-ing new colonization opportunities and formulate a recommendation based on op-portunity for success and organizational match. When a recommendation is made to “apply” to a new campus, the extension packet of materials is submitted. Think of this packet as our cover letter and resume. In addition, a portfolio of supporting ma-terials and work samples is submitted to further substantiate our qualifications. An exploratory visit is often offered by the campus allowing candidate organizations to meet members of the selection com-mittee, explore the campus and further determine if there’s a match.

The selection committee at the univer-sity reviews the packets and determines an average of three groups to invite for a presentation. Alpha Gamma Delta selects a presentation team tailored for the campus. The presenters each bring a specific viewpoint and Alpha Gamma Delta experience, as well as a connection to the campus, that make our presentation relevant.

The interview – This typically involves a full day of meetings with various campus constituencies, including the extension selection committee, staff and administration and Greek students. Throughout the day, Alpha Gamma Delta representatives field questions and create opportunities to discuss the qualifications and experiences Alpha Gamma Delta can offer the campus. The day concludes with a formal presentation.

The offer – Once the interview day is completed, the Fraternity’s presenta-tion team discusses what they learned and offers insight to confirm or dispute that there is a match between the campus and Alpha Gamma Delta. International Council is involved in these discussions and takes all information collected to determine whether or not to accept an in-vitation to colonize. Assuming that there is a match, much like that job that you re-ally want, we sit in anticipation and wait for the call to come. Then the real work begins to plan and prepare for recruitment and the ongoing success of the colony.

of chapters is not our aim; that would be unworthy. Let us be known as a Fraternity satisfied with only the highest attainment of character and scholarship.” Establish-ing new chapters offers the opportunity to extend the circle of sisterhood to women in new communities. Not only does that allow us to grow in numbers, which is important for long term sustainability, but more importantly brings exceptional women into our organization. When more talented women whose ideals and personal values align with those in our Purpose join the organization, we are all strengthened.

Your membership in Alpha Gam-ma Delta is a result of an exten-sion opportunity. Each and every one of us has benefited from membership in Alpha Gamma Delta because another group of women had the foresight to establish a chapter at your undergraduate alma mater.

How can you be part of grow-ing our sisterhood? You may be wondering how you can contribute to the continued growth of our Fraternity—well, we have a few opportunities for you. If you live in the area of a new colonization opportunity and are invited to attend an alumnae reception or the formal presenta-tion, please go. You will meet new sisters, see a new campus, learn more about how you could be involved and be a part of pos-itively sharing all that Alpha Gamma Delta has given to you. When you read about a new colonization effort—we have three of them occurring this year—send a note of encouragement to those new members and volunteers supporting them. Welcome them, share your experience with them, encourage them!

Want to learn more? Contact Sheila Kelley Sola, International Vice President-Extension, at [email protected] or Stephannie Sack Bailey, Executive Director, at [email protected].

Current Colonizations: Westminster College in Missouri, University of Ontario Institute of Technol-ogy (UOIT) in Ontario, Canada

Coming in Spring 2010: Delta Xi–Arizona State University!

The Extension ProcessBy: Stephannie Sack Bailey, Executive Director of Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity

Position Available: New Chapter University seeking new women’s organization to join our campus community. Qualifications include: Offer comprehensive and values-based member programming, demonstrated abil-ity to recruit a membership comparable to other existing groups on campus, provide ongoing volunteer and staff support dur-ing colonization and beyond, significant and engaged alumnae support in the local area, positively contribute to the Greek community through participation in campus activities and community service initiatives, and capacity to create and maintain comparable housing situation. To apply, please submit materials demon-strating how the organization possesses the required qualifications. Materials should be submitted to the Director of Student Life/Greek Affairs. All applica-tions will be reviewed and final candidates will be required to make an on-campus presentation to the Extension Committee and members of the campus community.

Why does the Fraternity apply for new “job” when we have plenty of existing jobs to do? Ongoing, measured and strategic addition of new chapters is essential for the overall growth of the Fraternity. One of my favorite quotes from Founder Jennie Titus Smith Morris is, “To surpass in mere numbers

Treasuring Our History

The Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly, published continuously since 1909, is celebrating its centennial issue in fall 2009. Can you believe that the Quarterly was first published only five years after the Fraternity was founded? The original intent of the Quarterly was to foster the ideals of Alpha Gamma Delta, which is still true today. Contemporary readers, however, also find that each issue focuses on a specific feature or topic relevant to members of all ages. The Quarterly strives to serve as an ongoing, contemporary forum to inspire and educate members on Fraternity, Greek and women’s issues. The Quarterly has also been an important part of the documentation of the growth of the Fraternity, serving as a permanent, historical record of each chapter and the organization as a whole. In the fall 2009 issue, learn more about the history of the Quarterly—why it began, how it is created and how it evolved—and how it will continue to impact Alpha Gamma Delta for decades to come!

Sign Up for the Electronic Quarterly! In order for you to continue to enjoy the new design and layout of the magazine, you need to sign up for the electronic Quarterly! Instead of producing four printed issues per year, starting in winter 2010, only two issues per year will be printed—spring and fall. The other two issues—winter and summer—will be delivered directly to your inbox. To ensure you will receive the electronic Quarterly, please update your e-mail address. You can do this three ways:

News

Adding Alumnae Chapter/Club Reports: Alumnae chapters and clubs are encouraged to submit news about their chapters/clubs, including philanthropy events, social activities and overall updates. E-mail your stories and pictures to [email protected] by September 1.

Changes to Collegiate Chapter Reports: Instead of annual updates being featured in the spring and summer issues, collegiate chapters are encouraged to submit brief articles based on pre-determined topics. Our first topic relates to a line of the Purpose: “To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships.” How is your collegiate chapter fulfilling this line of the Purpose? E-mail a high resolution photo and your essay to [email protected] by September 1.

Sister Spotlight Article: The Sister Spotlight article acknowledges an outstanding Alpha Gam for her commitment to the Fraternity. This could be a Volunteer Service Team member, Chapter Advisor, International Headquarters staff member, etc. Send your recommendations and three reasons why each person should be recommended to [email protected] by September 1.

Letters to the Editor: The Quarterly is for YOU, the sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta. We want to hear what you think about your magazine! Send us your comments about this issue by September 15.

Additional features will include sharing stories from our archives, quizzes and brief Fraternity news updates.

The Quarterly staff and International Council would like to thank all of the sisters who provided feedback on our maga-zine. Thanks for your suggestions for improvement. We are confident that you will enjoy the updated and innovative Quarterly planned for our next issue!

Alpha Gamma Delta and Omega Financial: A Green Partnership

Alpha Gamma Delta is excited to an-nounce that the Fraternity will continue

its partnership with Omega Financial, Inc. Several new initiatives for the 2009-2010 school year that will save chapters time, money and paper have been planned. New members will be able to electronically com-plete and sign several forms, including our anti-hazing policy and financial obligation statement. These forms will then be stored digitally. Previously, these forms required two printed copies for each member.

This year, new members will also be able to order their official Alpha Gamma Delta jewelry right on their Omega Member Ac-cess Plus website. As soon as the New Member Coordinator enters the new mem-ber information, each new member will be able to go online and select her Badge and guard. The jewelry order page will allow new members to see all of the options to

choose from when selecting their Badge, including the new Sterling Silver and White Gold options.

The Fraternity partnered with Omega last year and put Alpha Gamma Delta at the forefront of a national trend to streamline chapter finances and member management. Utilizing Omega has allowed United States chapters to reduce the number of financial reports a chapter has to file from 51 to 18. Along with simplifying the job of the Vice President Finance and Finance Advisor, it goes right along with the Fraternity’s initia-tive to go green and reduce our use of paper. Omega allows chapters to electronically submit reports, which means chapters are saving time, money and paper when they don’t have to print and mail each report.

Omega will continue to offer the same high level of customer support and service to our

“How I love those Alpha Gams so deep, deep so down, down so deep, deep so down, down in my heart. Woo!”

Flashback to the summer of 1984 ... It is the opening session of The Leadership Conference (TLC) in Alpha Xi Chapter’s chapter house at the University of Maryland. As the recently elected President of Zeta Beta Chapter, I’m attending as the of-ficial delegate. It’s rumored that Grand Council members (that’s what they were called back then) are somewhere in the house, and I’m not quite sure how I feel about all of this. My chapter was placed on probation a week after I was installed and my wider Fraternity experience thus far has consisted of grudgingly writing, probably not very truthful, monthly progress reports to the Grand Vice President–Undergraduates, outlining how our chapter (which is quite certain we’ve done nothing wrong) intends to change our ways. As I stand there greeting other col-legians, my emotions run the gamut from nervous, to skeptical, to maybe even a little bit bitter, when suddenly into the room bursts an exuberant little old lady who begins to lead the room

frazzled mother of an infant and a toddler, so desperate for adult conversation that I was brave enough to venture out one cold, February night to a local alumnae club meeting. Someone learned I was an en-gineer and must have thought “Hmmm… she must be good with numbers.” I was soon asked to be club treasurer, a position I held for four years and was able to fulfill either by mail or by strapping the kids into their car seats and using the bank’s drive through window. That led to other offi-cer positions within the group and eventually to province, area and director positions. It also led to some quirkier one-time opportunities such as serving as Convention Recorder (pressing record, pause and stop repeatedly for three days) and serving as videographer for several grave marker medallion placement ceremonies for our Founders.

Volunteering for Alpha Gam can begin at any age and con-tinue as long as one is willing. E-mail, text messaging and social networking sites have added the flexibility to com-municate and complete many tasks at whatever time of the day or night might be con-venient for you. Deep, deep down, down in our hearts I think we all have something to give.

in a rousing rendition of the above song, complete with exaggerated motions and a kiss and “Woo!” at the end of each chorus.

Her name tag reads “Jackie Foy Messmer, Grand Vice President-Extension.” What? This little dynamo is a mem-ber of Grand Council? That can’t be. She looks human. She’s singing one of our songs! My chapter had never been known for our singing (still isn’t, as a matter of fact)but we knew that song. We loved that song. We sang it all the time. The lady singing that song was still involved with Alpha Gam? I was intrigued.

I don’t even recall if I met Jackie that weekend and I don’t remember what she said to us that night, but looking back, I realize that she was my inspiration for a lifetime of involvement. She made me look around the room that night with new eyes and recognize the awesome sister-hood that surrounded me. Don’t get me wrong. Up until that point I was very active within my chapter and on the Lehigh University Panhellenic Council. I felt pretty passion-ate about what Greek life could offer the women on my campus, who were in the distinct minority. I’d worked to bring new NPC groups to

campus and to gain equitable housing for Greek women. Those Lehigh fraternity expe-riences infected me with a bit of an activism bug that still burns brightly within me. But, before that night, I don’t think I really thought about Alpha Gam beyond that little corner of my world and certainly “International” was something or someone to be regarded with caution and suspicion. I know for sure that before that night I did not see or appreci-ate the big picture of Alpha Gamma Delta. I never thought about the countless women it takes to run this organization or why they do what they do. I never thought that I might one night, 24 years later, be sing-ing with sisters from across North America after my in-stallation as International Vice President-Alumnae.

In the intervening years, there have been many other sisters who have inspired me, mentored me, coached me and often pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Their trust in me and each new adven-ture usually began with a late night phone call, often with a southern-accented voice on the other end of the line say-ing, “Mary Beth, would you be willing to …?” My volunteer path began when I was 24 years old, the
