These three point to Christ and flow from Christ. Jesus shows His disciples His hands side, from which blood and water flowed, saying “Peace be with you.” He presents the wounds which turn our fear to gladness and which restore us to the Father. Jesus breathes on His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:23). His breath, His words are Spirit and life. QUASIMODO GENITI (SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER)

April 19, 2020

As We Gather ~ The Wounds of Christ Give Us Life“For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood” (1 John 5:7). They raise up our dry, dead bones and give us new and everlasting life (Ezek. 37:1–14). Christ now gives His ministers to speak His forgiving, Spirit-filled words to the penitent in His stead. Our Lord continues to come to His people, presenting His wounds to us in the Sacraments of water and blood. He bids us to touch His side at His table, to re-ceive His risen body and blood in true faith, that believing we may have life in His name.

Antiphon (Easter)

Additional Psalms Psalm 33; antiphon: v. 6

6By the word of the LORD the heav- | ens were made,* and by the breath of his mouth | all their host.

1Shout for joy in the LORD, O you | righteous!* Praise befits the | upright.2Give thanks to the LORD | with the lyre;* make melody to him with the harp of | ten strings!3Sing to him a | new song;* play skillfully on the strings, with | loud shouts.

4For the word of the LORD is | upright,* and all his work is done in | faithfulness.5He loves righteousness and | justice;* the earth is full of the steadfast love | of the LORD.

6By the word of the LORD the heav- | ens were made,* and by the breath of his mouth | all their host.7He gathers the waters of the sea | as a heap;* he puts the deeps in | storehouses.

8Let all the earth | fear the LORD;* let all the inhabitants of the world stand in | awe of him!9For he spoke, and it | came to be;* he commanded, and it | stood firm.

10The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to | nothing;* he frustrates the plans of the | peoples.11The counsel of the LORD stands for- | ever,* the plans of his heart to all gener- | ations.12Blessèd is the nation whose God | is the LORD,* the people whom he has chosen as his | heritage!

13The LORD looks down from | heaven;* he sees all the chil- | dren of man;14from where he sits enthroned he | looks out* on all the inhabitants | of the earth,15he who fashions the hearts | of them all* and observes | all their deeds.16The king is not saved by his great | army;* a warrior is not delivered by his | great strength.17The war horse is a false hope for sal- | vation,* and by its great might it cannot | rescue.

18Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who | fear him,* on those who hope in his | steadfast love,19that he may deliver their | soul from death* and keep them alive in | famine.

20Our soul waits | for the LORD;* he is our help | and our shield.21For our heart is | glad in him,* because we trust in his | holy name.22Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be up- | on us,* even as we | hope in you.

C Glory be to the Father and | to the Son* and to the Holy | Spirit; as it was in the | beginning, * is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

6By the word of the LORD the heav- | ens were made,* and by the breath of his mouth | all their host.

+ READINGS +

Reading Ezekiel 37:1–14 1The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the val-ley; it was full of bones.

Page 7: QUASIMODO GENITI (SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER)

7

2And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. 3And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I an-swered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” 4Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” 7So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came to-gether, bone to its bone. 8And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. 9Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. 11Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off.’ 12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.”

A O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Reading 1 John 5:4–10 4For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who be-lieves that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spiritis the truth.

Page 8: QUASIMODO GENITI (SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER)

7For there are three that testify: 8the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.

A O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Reading John 20:19–31 19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you with-hold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.” 24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thom-as was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the dis-ciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

A O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Lord’s PrayerC Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Collects

Introduction to Collects LSB 227

Collect of the Day Almighty God, grant that we who have celebrated the Lord’s resurrection may by Your grace confess in our life and conversation that Jesus is Lord and God; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.C Amen.

Prayer of the Church Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. O God, Your Son came as the Son of Man to breathe His Word and Spirit upon the dry, dead bones of Adam’s children. Grant that we may hear Your holy Word, receive Your Spirit, and rise each day from the death of sin to live in new-ness of life before You; Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, Your Son appeared to His disciples in His resur-rected flesh to ordain them and to send them out into the world, that repentance and the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name. Continue to raise up for us faithful men to serve in the Of-fice of the Holy Ministry, and bless their service among Your people who, with St. Thomas, confess Jesus as their Lord and God. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Loving God, You sent Your Son to proclaim liberty to the captive, and You delivered the apostles from imprisonment according to Your will. Remember those who are imprisoned or held captive, whether justly or unjustly. Deliver them according to Your wisdom and mercy, and grant that they might hear Your Word and rejoice with penitent hearts that they are set free from sin, death and the devil. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful God, remember those who have wandered from the house-hold of faith. Faithful to Your promises, work all things in their lives to remind them of their need for Your unending grace and stead-fast love, that they might return to the faith and rejoice in Your Son who has died and is risen for them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, You appoint rulers and officials for the sake of order and peace. Bless those whom You have placed in authority over us at the federal, state and local levels. Give to them the desire to serve with integrity and honor, and to work for the benefit of all. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, look with mercy upon all who suffer in this vale of tears, the sick, the lonely, the shut-in, [especially Carmen, Susan, Ruth, Dianna, Zoey, and those we name in our hearts]. Provide them with loving and compassionate care, and comfort them with the reminder that everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world, and that, believing that Jesus is the Christ, they have life in His name. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Page 13: QUASIMODO GENITI (SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER)

Almighty God, heavenly Father, give us grace to trust You during this time of illness and distress. In mercy put an end to the epidemic that afflicts us. Grant relief to those who suffer, and comfort all that mourn. Sustain all medical personnel in their labors, and cause Your people ever to serve You in righteousness and holiness; Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort, deal gra-ciously with all those who mourn especially the family of Tricia, that, casting every care on You, they may know the consolation of Your love; Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Collect for GraceL O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Stewardship: John 20:19 – “On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ ” Jesus spends a lot of His time tell-ing the disciples to not be afraid. Our fears constantly hem us in and prevent us from following the Lord’s will. But there is no need to fear. Jesus has conquered. No fear can keep us locked up. We have been set free by Jesus for lives that declare His marvelous deeds.

Building Healthy Families for April 19th: Did You Know: April 9th is National High Five Day. Who knew? Encouragement can come in a multitude of different forms. Whether it’s a high five, a handwritten note, or a word softly spoken, you can make a difference today by building someone up. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11 ~ Lutheran Family Service of Iowa: Des Moines (515) 251-4900. www.LutheranFamilyService.org

Life Quote for April 19th: “Did the soldiers wonder about Jesus in years to come? Surely, a Man of such power could have avoided the cross. But that wasn’t what Jesus was doing with His authority. He was in charge that night, because He was about the business of saving us. And now that He has risen from the dead and ascended into heaven, we know that He is in charge of everything in heaven and earth—and we are safely His forever.” Dr. Kari Vo, Lutheran Hour Ministries ~ A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life www.lutheransforlife.org

Life Thought in the Church Year for April 19th: Conditions like cancer and dementia pose significant struggle. Pregnancies affected by poverty, disability, or sexual assault involve real difficulties. Abor-tion or physician-assisted suicide may seem like resolutions. Yet in-tentionally ending innocent life opposes God and will fail (Acts 5:38-39) to secure any ultimate peace or comfort. Instead trust, wait, and rejoice (1 Peter 1:5-6): God’s gifts and His works—even amid suffer-ing—no one and nothing can overthrow.

COVID-19: Spring Retreats & Summer Camp: A few key updates include: The Family Campground is closed indefinitely. The gover-nor also ordered recreational camping be stopped at least until April 30. Because of financial concern due to the pandemic, we’ve imple-mented a soft spending freeze until we feel confident our ability to spend dollars will be met with income. So once we’re given direc-tion as to when recreational camping opens up, we’ll need a bit of time get our Family Campground ready to go. We’ll update you as soon as we get it up and running.

16

Page 17: QUASIMODO GENITI (SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER)

With regards to summer camp, we’re going to continue patience in this time. We’re waiting to see what the coming weeks bring to see how our upcoming summer camp season is impacted. We’re still hoping on summer camp as we have planned it, but we have also developed some alternative summer camp contingencies should the pandemic disrupt our current summer camp schedule. We’re going to announce those possibilities on April 24, with final decisions no later than May 22, and we certainly want to have a decision before that. Our first day of summer camp is scheduled for June 17.

We’re still receiving registrations, and if you want to secure your spot for summer camp, do so today by registering online at campiodiseca.org. Prices go up $10 after April 27, so you have a great chance to save money by registering before then.

If you are one of our spring or summer retreat groups, outdoor edu-cation groups, or family reunions, you’re likely waiting on direction from our public health officials just as we are. A key consideration in hosting any event for the foreseeable future, aside from direct health and safety from COVID-19, is restrictions on mass-gatherings. Cur-rently, gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited in Iowa. We are uncertain when that order and/or recommendation will be lifted, but when it is lifted, there could be a new recommendation of 25 or 50 people to go into effect, rather than unlimited amounts of people. Again, the next few weeks will be key in identifying whether or not mass-gathering limitations will continue and for how long.

Our next Camp update will be on April 24, which is the end of next week. Our hope is that we’ll have a better picture of what things look like at that time. After that, we plan to give you an update each Friday as we have new information.

God be with you in this time, and keep you safe from all danger, especially from COVID-19! We look forward to serving you soon!

Peace in Christ,
