The crowd does not know that 0uasimodo has se:uestered 2smeralda andtaken her to the only place he knows? his bell tower. The unruly gang try to gainaccess to the 'athedral. They are confronted by Phoebus, the captain of the guard.2smeralda, on seeing the man she loves alive, as she believed him dead, rushes intohis arms. !ittle does she know that Fleur 7!ys has convinced Phoebus to have2smeralda hung. The crowd, believing 2smeralda safe disperses. 2smeralda is taken

    away and 3ung in ail awaiting her dawn encounter with the gallows.
