Principal’s news: Thanks to all who gave me a warm welcome back from LSL. I have had a very refreshing break and it was great to come back to work when every-thing was running so smoothly. We wish Christian Smith and Russell Taylor -Shaw a great time away with their families on their LSL. We also wish other staff members who are taking LSL before the school holidays a happy and restful break away. Working Bee: A huge thanks to the many families who came to help us on Sunday morning. It was wonderful to have beautiful weather and being able to achieve most of the tasks that we planned for the day. Our grounds are looking superb at present thanks to Dave Pace and those who came to assist. Dave needs special credit as he was working as a volunteer monitoring threatened bird species and only returned from the Northern Territory in the early hours of Sunday morning. Tribes: Teachers often revisit the Tribes agreements and we ask families to reinforce these at home with your children.
Appreciations - No “put downs”
Personal Best - In every situation
Mutual respect - Respect for others feelings and ideas
Attentive listening - Listening with our ears, eyes and heart.
State School’s Relief Footy day: On Friday 21st September students are invited to bring a gold coin and come in the colours of their favourite footy team. They may like to wear a beanie, a scarf, socks, a footy jumper or simply have streamers in their team colours. We do not want parents to go to any additional expense as it is a day to raise funds for less fortunate children in state schools who need school uniforms and shoes. Prep 2013 Enrolments: We have noted that there are still some siblings of our current students not enrolled for prep next year. We do need your forms to be in to secure a place for your child. Enrolment confirmation letters were sent out last week. Service Awards: Congratulations go to Mrs Di Dendle, Ms Marianne Mc Lennon, Mr Geoff Cameron and Mr Andrew Young who gained service awards from the DEECD this year. They have all given outstanding service to education and we are fortunate to have them teaching at our school. Farewell: We will also be farewelling one of these teachers who retires this week. I know many of you will have personally valued the experience of Andrew Young during his time teaching at Torquay College. Andrew is a highly respected teacher and I know that many of you will join us in wishing him all the very best in his retirement. Assistant Principal Report Dear School Community Members,
I would like to acknowledge the dedicated teaching staff at Torquay College for providing professional support and mentorship to
the many student teachers from various Universities in 2012. Throughout the year we accepted and trained 21 teachers at various
times and year levels throughout the college.
Teachers immerse the student teachers in the day to day activities of particular classes as well as whole school operation. The class
program and professional dialogue enables student teachers to teach a series of lessons, build positive relationships with students
and reflect on their teaching practise. Schools are instrumental in the development of the teaching profession and our teachers main-
tain high standards and quality mentorship that build the capacity of student teachers in readiness to teach young people.
Swimming Program Over the next two weeks our 3/4 teachers and students are extremely busy with students actively participating in a daily Swimming
program and Bike Ed program.
The students are having a wonderful time at the pool building their skills and water safety knowledge in the daily swimming pro-
gram. These are important skill leading into summer and the need to understand water safety living on the coast.
Students are also participating in a Bike Ed program that enables students to learn the skills and knowledge required to ride a bicy-
cle safely and independently. The program involves a mix of practical activities conducted off-road (in the school grounds) togeth-
er with classroom activities. The five modules include: getting started; basic bike skills; building skills for riding in traffic; riding on
paths.
Athletics Congratulations to all years 3-6 students who competed in the district athletics completion at Landy Field last week.
There are 42 Torquay College students who qualified in a variety of events for the next stage, Bellarine Divisional Athletics carni-
val held at Landy Field on Monday 17th September. The students are congratulated for this achievement and we wish them well.
Sun smart Hats for Term 4
A reminder to parents that all students will need to wear their sun smart hat throughout term four (and term one) during outside ac-
tivities. This is part of the School Council’s ‘Uniform’ and ‘Sun Smart’ policies. Students will be required to play in a designated
shaded area if they don’t have their sun smart hat. This is a great time to find the school hat and prepare for a sunny term 4.
Thank-you for supporting Torquay College and have a great week.
Kind Regards
Nadia Tkaczuk and Christian Smith

http://wwm2012scope.gofundraise.com.au/ but if you can't make it, perhaps consider sponsoring Finn (all

See the person
Watching the Paralympics gives you such an insight into the way sport could be. Rather than com-
peting with each other, there is a sense that each of the participants is competing against themselves, their disability
and the clock! Over and over we see competitors celebrating each other’s achievements, waiting to congratulate
the last person over the line or to touch the edge of the pool. It is inspirational to see “rivals” clapping and cheering
each other on . There is a refreshing lack of disappointment when gold medals are not won. Instead we hear
phrases like “I am so happy to be here.!” “I am so happy I got the chance to do my best.” The faces are full of de-
light and the culture is a heartening atmosphere of celebration for endeavor and the human ability to overcome
adversity and to achieve the amazing . I believe our young people can often learn more from the Paralympics
approach to achievement than from the Olympic and indeed the AFL focus on winning at all costs, and celebrating
only the Premiers or the Gold Medalist. Wouldn’t it be great if the runners up on Grand Final Day also got a med-
al celebrating their great achievement in making the Grand Final? There is no shame in doing your best even if it
wasn’t good enough to win on the day. Isn’t that what we tell our children? Then why don’t we model it at the
elite level like the paralympians do?
This Sunday our own Finn Henderson (D19) will lead the” See the Person – Not the Disability “ walk in Geelong,
(see this newsletter for details). We celebrate with him and we encourage as many who can to walk in solidarity
with him on Sunday at Eastern Park.

Homework-your feedback is appreciated Homework Policy 2013
This year the school is updating the Torquay College Homework Policy. Over the next few weeks the staff will be discussing and redeveloping the Policy for 2013. The process will entail a number of objectives, with particular focus on the following points: 1. Amount of homework – age appropriate 2. Set tasks - requirements 3. Number of projects per term/semester 4. Homework books and text books for home tasks 5. Communication home to parents in regards to homework tasks 6. Parent communication to class teachers in relation to homework tasks – what should parents do if they note their child is having difficulty We also value your feedback, as parents. Homework is a part of schooling and education and is beneficial to your child’s education and personal growth. It is important that the connection between home and school is supportive and positive. If you would like to give us your feedback in regards to the amount of homework and tasks your child is required to complete, please follow the link to a 1 page survey monkey to fill out and provide feedback. It is anonymous and will take no more than 5 minutes. The survey will close on Friday 21st September, 2012.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YRZCQ3C We would really like your feedback to inform the writing of the whole school policy. Thank you for your continued support.
Robotics Robotics is run by Mr Kiss and is a great club because you use Lego to
build robots. You can build things like: aeroplanes, legs that can kick a
ball (careful with this one, it’s too fun) and a monkey that plays the
drums. It is a great chance to learn new skills and to meet new people.
We would love it if you you’d come to robotics, lots of people have al-
ready come and had HEAPS of fun and all went “Noooooo!” when they
had to leave.
Robotics is on Wednesday, lunch time at D15 in the 5/6 area. 3, 4, 5
and 6 are the only year levels that can come, sorry for the inconven-
ience.

Torquay Debaters
Torquay B debating team had a fantastic time debating over the year with a new debating coach, Miss. Brasier. It was a
slow start but we finally made it with a three-point win.
Our first debate was against Geelong East. It was at Torquay so, we were lucky to have our first debate where we are
comfortable, at our own school. We were negative and the topic was ‘Handwriting is an out dated skill’. Our second
debate was against Bellaire, at Bellaire. We were affirmative and the topic was ‘Olympics are a waste of money’. In
the third debate we versed Lara, at Torquay. We were negative and the topic was unseen. When a topic is unseen, it
means you don’t have a topic to practise leading up to the debate and you have to think really quickly! Finally, it had
come to the final debate, Torquay versus Roslyn. We were so excited when ……… WE WON BY THREE POINTS!
The topic was again, unseen.
The Torquay B debating team had five students, Kahliah Zois, Zeesha Cummins, Kyra Hughes, Eden Bacon-Hall and
Monique Rawlings. A special thanks to Miss Brasier and Mrs Swan for being the world’s best debating coaches and
making it the best experience!
