VIDEO from QUÉBEC

Video, the living medium: never ceasing to push its limits whileinvariably rejecting them, the ideal vehicle to research and exploreimage and sound. This selection of Québécois video shorts of the1990s reveals a marked interest in electronic matter translatedinto experimentation with motion and a sustained preoccupationwith texture. Yet the search for the image is not disembodied but rooted in performing bodies or bodily fragments which in theirdiversity show as many distinct experiences as there are understandings and approaches in video.

These tapes embody a fascination for the real, the daily, the banal(Manon Labrecque, Nelson Henricks), the pleasure of storytelling(Monique Moumblow), the creation of spaces for mockery andabsurdity (Pascal Grandmaison), fiction and the circulation of thehallucinatory or the whimsical (Yudi Sewraj, Diane Obomsawin). An urge to work with electronic texture, with the pixel itself, becomes progressively more apparent, along with a concern forbreaking down the image (Robin Dupuis), laying it bare (MarioCôté, Julie-Christine Fortier), even to the point of atomisation(Laura Jeanne Lefave).

LA LA LA HUMAN STEPS > Salt

For its 20th anniversary, this famous Montréal troupe, directed by Édouard Lock, presents the British premiere of their latest creation, Salt. Lock’s revolutionary language has influenced anentire generation of dancers and this work pushes his fascinationwith speed and complexity one stage further. Set at a freneticpace that never lets up, Salt is a cascading series of lyrical andintense pas de deux, choreographic phrases and sequencesunfolding at the speed of thought, stimulating the senses and confounding the perception. Four male and six female dancers, occasionally supported by evocative images of the passage fromchildhood to adolescence, barely touching the ground, float above this world as if they were their very souls.

Salt was first performed at the famous Saitama Arts Theatre inJapan on the 22nd October 1998 before going on world tour. La La La ended 1999 on a tour of 5 Japanese towns and start themillennium touring Europe, Canada and South America.

MICHEL TREMBLAY> Solemn Mass for a Full Moon in Summer

This glorious new play by one of Québec’s most celebrated playwrights will receive its European Premiere at the TraverseTheatre in Edinburgh and will then transfer to London’s BarbicanCentre for a limited season as part of BITE : 00 – the BarbicanInternational Theatre Event. In a robust new Scots translation thisdrama resonates to the sound and structure of the sung mass.Eleven characters (who live in apartments in the same tenementbuilding) representing different aspects and stages of love, comeout onto their balconies on a bright moonlit night to expose theirheartbreaks and vent their rage.

Born on the rue Fabre in Montréal in 1942 Michel Tremblay is one of the pillars of the literature of Québec. His universe, peopledwith dropouts, ordinary folk, disillusioned women, lovers, is hisown universe; he speaks to us of life, our life. Winner of a multitude of awards he works variously as storyteller, novelist, adapter, screenwriter, writer of musicals, radio and televisiondramatist and songwriter.

DYNAMO THEATRE > Mur-Mur (The Wall)

A wall, with its graffiti and its secrets, alternates as a playgroundand a refuge from the world for five characters. It echoes the whispers and murmurings of earlier times. Mur-Mur (The Wall)speaks of the friendships among two teenage couples and apesky and incorrigible younger brother. With humour and sheerinnocence, these five characters are swept up in an air-boundacrobatic ballet. Their flirting, teasing and fearlessness become amoving and scintillating reflection of a very special time in life, aworld of young love and discovery.

DynamO Theatre performs for audiences of all ages and from allcultural backgrounds. Since its beginnings in 1981 over 900000people have enjoyed more than 2100 performances in North andSouth America, Europe and Asia. In Mur-Mur (The Wall) dialogue iskept to a bare minimum, leaving way for soaring and explosivegymnastics. Telling of quarrels, shared schemes and stolen kisses, the acrobatic choreography allows the performers to unleash theirenergy as well as their acrobatic virtuosity in the exploration of theexuberant elqouence of movement.

PME> En français comme en anglais,

it’s easy to criticise

Tentative incessante de communication et de ’traduction’, cetterencontre Montréal-Toronto explore nos attitudes en matièred’analyse critique, tant personnelles qu’artistiques, voirethéoriques. Criticism is a way we can express our deepestthoughts and feelings while at the same time maintaining a certainobjectivity and distance. And it’s easy. For people who like thefilms of Hal Hartley and Leos Carax, the music of Pavement andSerge Gainsbourg, the novels of Nicholas Moseley and GeorgesPerec. And for people who hate name dropping. Tout en créant unrapport désinvolte et convivial avec le public, nous admettonsqu’un contact véritable est perturbateur.

As much in the theme as in the form the relation between Montréaland Toronto is at the heart of this production which sees itself asan incessant translation - sometimes correct, sometimes not –between French and English, between two different universes. If it is easy to criticise, it is difficult to act. Since 1990 PME hasbeen calling on artists from a variety of disciplines to create ratherbizarre and preposterous theatre. This is a collaboration withToronto writer-director Jacob Wren whose world may bedescribed as the Bermuda Triangle of metaphor.

LES DEUX MONDES > LeitmotivLove War Fate

A woman writes to her daughter and reveals why she abandonedher at birth, leaving her country behind, torn apart by a war whichfirst made an enemy out of her lover, then a deserter at the samemoment as she was joining the resistance. But the war catches upwith them, wounding them both, each fleeing reality as they may,now become unbearable since restored to what is awkwardlycalled peace. In a continually changing environment, generated byshadow play, video projection and the ingenious use of props andlighting, two actors and a mezzo-soprano play out this musicaldrama: the birth of desire and the rise of a murderous conflictwhich crushes individual lives.

Since 1973 Les Deux Mondes has given some 4000 performanceson all five continents. Language, culture and the peoples of theEarth are the global village which Les Deux Mondes’ particularstyle works to discover in all its richness of fable, struggle andquery. The point of departure in the creation of Leitmotiv was therich musical score and sound environment of Michel Robidoux towhich was added video and the text of Normand Canac-Marquis.Daniel Meilleur directs.
