I very much enjoy my tutorials. We’re taught to form our own

opinions on things and I love debatingtopics with my tutors. The groups arejust the right size. They are smallenough that everyone has a chance to speak but large enough that there is a wide variety of opinions. Daphne McRae, LLB English and European Law

I strongly advise students to use the GSA service as much

as possible. I’ve been in there a fewtimes and they were most helpful.Emily Millgate, LLB

The most interesting part of mycourse is learning from lecturers

that are highly experienced in theirfield of Law – in particular ContractLaw and Criminal Law. Their anecdotes of their work life made the learningexperience much more interesting and memorable.Amudha Vaidyanathan, Senior Status LLB

Mooting at Queen MaryThe School of Law has a very strong andsuccessful mooting body. We host our internalGeorge Hinde Moot annually, in which over 150students compete. Our external mooting teamsare also very successful in competitions againststudents across the country.

Theo, one of this year’s moot officers, provides us with more information... Mooting is the verbal presentation of a legalcase. It is designed to simulate the courtenvironment, and to show and improve your advocacy skills.

Mooting provides the invaluable practicalexperience of using knowledge learnt on thecourse. It’s also great for improving researchskills, and teaching you how to think on yourfeet. Participants also get the opportunity tonetwork with legal professionals, which isalways a good thing! At Queen Mary we moot both externally and internally.

The George Hinde Moot is our internalcompetition, which has been running for overforty years. It is open to all law students andyou should definitely get involved from your firstyear. The final of the George Hinde was great;there was a chance to network with manyreputable professionals afterwards.

Do you have any professional contacts? This year we had a workshop run by a QC, whogave very helpful tips on advocacy to everyonewho made it to the semi-finals. The GeorgeHinde is adjudicated by practitioner judges, including The Right Honourable Sir StanleyBurnton.

What happens in the external moot competitions?Teams from Queen Mary compete against otheruniversities in established national and regionalmooting competitions. In 2012 the QMUL teamwere runners-up in the prestigious EnglishSpeaking Union/Essex Court Chambers NationalMoot Competition, and our team won theLondon Universities Mooting Shield. In 2013,we were runners-up in the London UniversitiesMooting Shield (LUMS) Competition.

How has mooting helped you as an individual? It has greatly improved my confidence, advocacy and research skills; all of whichproved to be highly useful when studying forexams! It’s also a really great competition toencourage reading full cases, and to improveskills in quickly absorbing relevant informationfrom a large volume of text, which is in myopinion the most important skill for a lawstudent to have.

Our School

Queen Mary Pro Bono SocietyThe Pro Bono Society is a 350-strong student-led organisation working to increase access to justice; seeking to engage members involunteering and fundraising activities, as well as creating networking opportunities.

Current president Axel-Charles Monin Nylundtells us more...Pro bono publico means “for the good of thepublic” and is at the heart of the activities weorganise. Our members participate in a rangeof activities such as volunteering andfundraising for the Whitechapel Mission andHoly Cross Centre; assisting solicitors from big City law firms at free legal advice clinics;organising secondhand book sales; andsupporting environmental projects, for example,Energy for Old Fadama, and FIELD. We alsofocus on developing our members’ skillsthrough career events and workshops. We haverecently secured subsidised placements inSingapore, Australia, India, Ghana and SouthAfrica. These internships involve providing legaladvice to prison inmates, documenting countryprofiles, and carrying out legal research.

My favourite event this year was a fundraisinglecture given by two former death row inmates:Sunny Peters and Peter Pringle. They spent 15and 17 years respectively on death row; thestory of their wrongful conviction and near-death experience was absolutely incredible.

How would a new student get involved? The best way to get involved with QMPBS is to apply for a committee position. There areabout 30 of these available each year, and theyprovide you with an opportunity to showcaseyour skills and accomplish projects. Writing forThe Advocate is also a fantastic way to getinvolved, and is an excellent addition to your CV.

What is The Advocate? The Advocate is the Pro bono society’snewspaper, providing a platform for students toexpress their views on legal issues and engagewith current events. It is read by some of thetop law firms and chambers in the City, manyof whom are keen to be involved with thepublication and the QMPBS in general.

Queen Mary Law SocietyLast year the Law Society had 200 registeredmembers. The Society aims to provide you withall the opportunities you might need to pursuea legal career and have a great time atuniversity.

Shaun Malone, president of the Law Society, explains who they are and how to get involved...The Law Society helps students to plug thegaps in their CVs and ensure they are asemployable as possible. As members of theSociety, students gain exposure to all possiblelegal careers; from working for a City firm tobeing part of an in-house legal team.

What kind of events do you run?The Society’s events are split into two distinctcategories: careers and social. Last year wehosted commercial awareness workshops inconjunction with BPP Law School. We also ransessions in conjunction with QM Careers. Forthose not sure where to take their career, weco-ordinated a panel discussion with lawyersfrom top London firms to discuss what it is liketo work in the niche areas of law. Social eventsthroughout the year were held both on campusand in the City, allowing members to relax withfriends and enjoy a couple of free drinks.

What is the best event your Society hasorganised this year? Our Negotiation Competition is always verypopular. Over 100 students enter, and afterfour rounds of intense competition, the finalistsnegotiate over a scenario created by a topLondon firm. They are judged by partners ofthe firm in their central London offices andcompete for a cash prize. The competition is agreat opportunity for our members to hone theirnegotiation skills, as well as networking withtrainees and qualified lawyers at some of thetop firms in the UK.

The Queen Mary Law JournalThe Law Society produces the Queen Mary LawJournal quarterly; it is full of articles producedby Queen Mary students. The Journal is nowcirculated across the UK and has achievedcritical acclaim by industry experts.

How would a new student get involved? We will have a stand at the Fresher’s Fair socome and chat to us. Once you have joined, we will keep you updated via email, Facebook, and Twitter.

Queen Mary Bar Society The Bar Society at Queen Mary is for thebenefit of students across all years of studywho have an interest in joining the Bar, orsimply want to learn more about being abarrister. Currently they have over 200members.

We asked their president Kristine Moeller-Jensen to give us more information about who they are and what they do...

What could a new student expect from the Bar Society? We offer lots of networking events, educationalevents, trips to various relevant institutions, workshops, socials, as well as variouscompetitions and panel debates on topicalissues. I think the best thing we organised thisyear was an essay competition in conjunctionwith Blackstone Chambers. The first prize wasa three day mini-pupillage at the Chambers. We also arranged a debate on assisted dying, which a number of prominent barristersattended, including David Perry QC.

What are the benefits of being part of the Bar Society? Being in London we are fortunate enough to be very close to the Inns and Chambers, which has enabled us to forge strong ties withnumerous sets, spanning a wide range ofpractice areas. We are invited to formal dinnersevery year at all the Inns, as well as receivingtheir sponsorship and the opportunity tonetwork with, and learn from, some of the best legal minds in the country.

We are committed to supporting andencouraging our members by equipping themwith practical information and advice to helpdemystify the Bar, making it more accessibleand less daunting. Meeting the barristers reallyhelps this. At our first event last year one of thenew students asked a panel of barristerswhether you have to ‘sell your soul’ to becomea barrister! That definitely lightened theatmosphere and was a great demonstrationthat even very serious barristers will oftenappreciate an (appropriately) humorousapproach.

The Bar society has organisedextremely useful events helping

me to understand the work of abarrister. For example, the Networkingevent was an invaluable experience, as Iwas able to hear about the peculiaritiesand everyday life of a barrister fromthose involved in the profession.Indre Kazlauskaite, LLB

Senior Status SocietyGeared towards the students on the SeniorStatus LLB programme, the Society’s aim is to support their members both socially andacademically throughout their time at QueenMary.

Travis and Graeme, Co-Presidents of the society, tell us more...We have around 40 members, and primarilyexist for Senior Status students, though ourevents are open to everyone.

What does the Society’s calendar look like?Like the other societies we run a range ofevents throughout the year, both careersfocused and opportunities to socialise and get to know each other. We have an annualChristmas party, which is always a popular one as it is a great time for meeting new peopleand celebrating the end of term. We also holdregular pub nights, which is a nice way to relaxafter a long week of study!

This year we held a Training Contractinformation session; we are always looking for opportunities to support students on thecourse, enabling them to understand itsuniqueness, and how to use it to its bestadvantage.

How do you do that?We use our connections with former SeniorStatus students, many of whom are nowemployed in the legal profession. This isparticularly useful for overseas students whomight not know how their degree is convertedwhen they return home; in fact, we ran an NCAevent for the Canadian students to give theman understanding of how they will qualify inCanada.
