Fr. Marty’s Musings In the early weeks of Ordinary Time, a feast takes precedence today, the Presentation of the Lord, or Candlemas. In some traditions, today marks the end of the Christmas season. So, if your Yuletide décor is still up, you had an excuse until today. The feast originated in 4th century Jerusalem with the name “Feast of the Meeting,” recalling when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, witnessed by Simeon and Anna as a light to the world .

Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Monday, February 3, is celebrated as the Feast of St. Blaise. He was bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth century. He became associated as the patron saint of those suffering from throat illnesses. A story from the legend of St. Blaise tells of his prayerful intercession helping to dislodge a fish bone from a boy’s throat. The blessing traditionally uses two candles (unlit!) and follows on the heels of Candlemas Day. We will offer a general Blessing of Throats as the final blessing today. If you prefer an individual blessing, you will be welcome to come forward at the end of Mass. We will also offer individual Blessing of Throats at the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Monday.

Our Pastor Emeritus, Fr. Ed Mikolajczyk, has been chosen to receive the St. John XXIII Award from the Association of Chicago Priests & Deacons. The award has been presented for 53 years to a Chicago priest in recognition of his service to the Archdiocese. See the information included in this bulletin and let us know if you can attend.

Today is also World Day for Consecrated Life, intended “to help the entire Church to esteem ever more greatly the witness of those persons who have chosen to follow Christ by means of the practice of the evangelical councils.” Women and men who dedicated their lives to consecrated life as sisters, brothers or religious priests have been instrumental to education, health care and parish ministry in our area. Let us appreciate their ministry and encourage vocations.

Are you registered as a parishioner here at Queen of Martyrs? I often am asked to sign a form for someone asked to be a sponsor at Baptism or Confirmation that affirms the person is a registered and active parishioner. I have had people say that they regularly go to church, but surprised that they are not on our registered rolls. If you are part of our community but do not receive envelopes (except for those registered but who use GiveCentral for their stewardship support), please fill out a registration form. Forms are in the rack at the back of church and at the Rectory. Call (708) 423-8110 with questions. If you are asking someone to be a sponsor, or have been invited to be a godparent or sponsor, please make the practice of our faith a commitment.

Fr. Marty Marren

Sandwich Schedule for Adult Members at 9:00 a.m. in the Convent on the following Wednesdays:

2020 February 5 & 19

In this week’s gospel we find Joseph and Mary following the law of their belief. They have taken Jesus to the temple for his presentation to the Lord. While there both Simeon and Anna sense Jesus as the redeemer. Upon completing their duty, they return home to Nazareth and go about their daily lives unaware of what lies ahead. Eventually all will soon recognize the saving powers of Jesus in their lives. Don’t forget to thank Jesus for all the saving grace he shows you daily.

Would you like to inspire how you pray

as we look ahead to Lent?

To better prepare yourself to be more positive about your faith?

Please Make Your Gift to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal

Come, follow me… and heal our world

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes, and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible.

The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal our world.”

In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help here in our parish.

As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal.

CRHP Spotlight

The CRHP Welcome weekend I attended, was a game changer for me. I had not felt connected to the parish, the church or Jesus. Spending time with women of the parish and sharing stories helped to find my way back to the Church. I’m inviting all the women of the parish to join us February 2020. Let us help you to become

a better wife, mom, sister, friend, a better version of yourself.

*Please RSVP by February 9th for interest in tickets. Final payment due Sunday, February 16th.*
