Queen of Martyrs Sunday Comparison—July 22, 2018

Fr. Marty’s Musings

Today’s Gospel presents John’s narrative of the feeding of the multitude—a precursor to the Eucharist. We appropriately give credit to Christ for the miracle, but it was not the disciples who were secondary agents in the feeding but a humble boy who generously offered his meager meal of barley loaves and fishes. Jesus did not feed the crowd from nothing but transformed the boy’s sharing into a feast sufficient to feed thousands. Jesus’ miraculously transforms bread and wine into his saving Body and Blood, and in doing so transforms us. We believe that every Eucharist is a miracle in that the Real Presence of the Body of Christ comes in a divine gift in the form of what was once bread and wine. We believe in the transubstantiation of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. We also say “Amen” to the call in Communion to become the Body of Christ as the Church. We become what we receive. Not only did Jesus make the boy’s simple offering enough to feed the multitude, but there was plenty remaining to fill twelve baskets. The number twelve is not an accident—it recalls the number of tribes of Israel and the apostles. It reminds us that we should share the miracle that we receive. The remnants of today’s Gospel remind us to call others to experience the wondrous feeding of Christ’s grace.

I was talking recently with some parishioners who bring Communion to the homebound. Communion for those unable to come to Mass is a vital ministry and the original purpose of tabernacles in churches. Let us know if you are interested in this ministry or in liturgical ministries at Mass. Please reach out to witness your faith and invite someone to join us in celebrating wonders of the Eucharist.

Weather has been tough for farmers and households—either too much or too little rain. Last weekend’s rains complicated many people’s outdoor plans. A couple weeks ago some of the gym windows developed leaks in a driving rain—a big problem as the new wood floor is being installed. The floor is progressing—the first coat of polyurethane has been applied—and the windows have been caulked. Please remember our Capital Improvement fund in the envelope packets so that we might have the resources to maintain and update our parish plant. Today’s gospel is one that most of us know well – the miracle of the multiplying of the loaves and fish. Just as Jesus feeds the hungry, we, too, can feed the hungry in different ways. Just take a look at the people around you – what can you do for them? It doesn’t have to be as huge as Jesus’ miracle to feed the crowd. You can simply spread a little bit of love, knowledge, and help and watch it go a long way. What can you do to spread Jesus’ word this week?

Queen of Martyrs Adoration Chapel of Divine Mercy

“When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, ‘This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.’”

(John 6:14)

The multitude of people who followed Jesus did so with such eagerness, forgetting their own needs, and Jesus supplied them with a wonderful miracle. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His justice, and all these things will be given you besides.” (Mt 6:33) SEEK GOD FIRST! Become a committed adorer. These are the open hours where an adorer is needed. We have other hours where a committed adorer could use a prayer partner, even if only occasionally. The complete list is at the chapel. Sign up there or call Marion, at 708 424-8433, for more information.

The members of QM Parish Outreach would like to thank everyone for their generous donations to the food drive last weekend. Your food and household donations were shared with St. Leonard’s Ministries, The Port

Ministries, and the food pantries at St. Germaine’s and St. Bede’s. We were also able to allow several of our clients to “shop” our tables for items they need - and a little extra. Your monetary donations will also help fund our sandwich program and various client needs.

Thanks again for all you do!

The other two groups were next to each other working on new construction from a worksite QMYM demoed two years ago. One site was framing and putting up walls while the other way building the floor. After work adventures included Walmart, a waterfall, BBQ at the lake, hiking at Knobby Rock, and reflecting in the rain.

Queen of Martyrs 5th Graders Demonstrate “How To”

Students in Mrs. Creevy’s English class had the opportunity to choose a topic and plan a presentation to show their classmates how to make different types of food, explain how science experiments work, or teach how to play an instrument. The students were required to write a paper about the subject they chose and read it during their presenta-tion. The 5th Graders enjoyed this hands on lesson and were treated to various food items including chocolate covered strawberries. They listened to trumpet playing from one of their classmates and also observed how “Slime” is made. The students were very engaged during this English lesson and received excellent grades on their well written papers!

Sick List

Queen of Martyrs publishes a list in the bulletin of those who are in need of healing. As we move into a new fiscal year and have a new pastor, we want to start fresh with our list. Prayer is a powerful prescription for whatever ails you. Please remember our sick in your prayers. Parishioners' names will be kept on the prayer list at Mass for two weeks and listed in the bulletin for 90 days. Immediate family members are asked to call after two weeks if they wish to still have their names read at Mass. (The sick person who you are praying for MUST know and give permission to have their name announced or published.) Names of non-parishioners who are immediate family members of our parishioners, will be read at Mass for two weeks but NOT listed in our bulletin. To be added to the sick list, please email the Rectory office at [email protected] or call 708-423-8110. If you would like the name included in the following Sunday’s bulletin, please call the office by Monday at noon.
