...to the launch issue of QueenBee - the brand new local women’s magazine.

Our goal is simple - to create a magazine that local women can relate to. Where you can read stories about other women in your community who are overcoming tough obstacles and achieving personal and professional success. We knew this idea could only work if women were willing to support us and share their joy, their triumphs, their pain, their pride, and their fears. So a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in making this happen.

In this issue we have covered a wide range of topics from health, hair & beauty to inspirational stories and helpful advice from women and local businesses.

So sit back and enjoy! You may be surprised at what is available to you right on your doorstep...

PS: Please tell your friends, spread the word and share the QueenBee buzz!

FOCUS ON

This issue we checked out the Cosmetic Clinic, a private clinic based in Peterborough, specialising in eyelid plastic surgery including

blepharoplasties and non-surgical medical aesthetic treatments. They offer a wide range of surgical and non-surgical anti-ageing and rejuvenating treatments, carried out to the highest standards by a NHS consultant surgeon, Zahida Butt and highly trained nurses/aesthetic practitioners. We chatted to business owner Zahida...

Cosmetic Clinic

What’s the history of your career? I trained in Ophthalmology and Ocular Plastic surgery in Edinburgh for 10 years. One year was spent in Australia where I did my Plastics Fellowship and gained great experience in treating Facial cancers and blepharoplasties (eyelid plastic surgery, which is my speciality). I am 55 Years old and have three lovely daughters aged 27, 25 and 23.

What’s special about the Cosmetic Clinic? We rejuvenate our patients very naturally using anti-aging treatments like Botox, fillers, lasers and chemical peels. My policy is “less is more” so people get a very natural result without looking over done. All patients receive a consultation and are advised to consider recommended treatments in an unhurried manner. We provide a friendly, warm environment; Jean, my Peterborough Manager, has a lovely manner with all my customers.

What would you say is your signature treatment? My most popular treatment is Botox, with fillers a close second. When done well, these treatments can give very natural results and can turn back the clock by 5-10 years.

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date? Achieving Consultant status for the last 18 Years and establishing three Cosmetic Clinics from scratch; Peterborough, Kings Lynn and Norwich. Each of these have been extremely successful.

What do you do to de-stress after a long day? By cuddling and stroking my 17 year old dog who is a Bichon Frise! It has been lovely having him all these years, he is quite a character and still has his mad puppy moments believe it or not! I also relax by listening to nice music, especially opera.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? We have a great trained therapist called Lea who does my laser and micro-dermabrasion treatments. She is extremely kind, caring and experienced in her field. She offers laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation, including thread vein and pigmentation treatment. We have special offers on MDA/peels at present which is a very refreshing facial for summer, to achieve smooth, bright and radiant skin ^

When we have a skin breakout, most of us attempt to clear spots with off the shelf topical products. But should we really be

slathering potent face creams and lotions on our delicate skin? Or instead, should we be cleansing it from the inside?

If the latest Japanese beauty trend is anything to go by, it seems so! The women of Japan swear by the ‘beauty from within’ philosophy and prefer to sip on tincture tonics to cleanse the system internally, encouraging clear, unblemished skin.

Neal’s Yard Remedies created a tincture similar to the traditional herbal treatment for acne, which has been used by tribes for medicinal, food, and ceremonial needs for years. It is a purifying blend of the skin-loving botanicals gotu kola, schisandra and calendula.

Gotu kola helps stimulate collagen and tissue formation. It also improves circulation, benefiting the skin tone with anti-inflammatory and skin-regenerating actions. Meanwhile, schisandra has been used historically for immune support and skin care.

Modern research suggests it has a protective effect on the liver, enhancing the overall cleansing benefits.

It is recommended to add 2ml to a cupful of water three times a day to reap the rewards. Head over to Neal’s Yard Remedies in Stamford to adapt the latest Japanese trend ^

Diminish the lines without needles! Instantly ageless is an anti-wrinkle cream that works quick and effectively to diminish the visible signs of ageing. The revolutionary ingredient is argireline, a peptide that works like Botox, but without the needles.

How it works: Visibly diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and erases the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. It minimises the appearance of pores, helps to even skin tone. Works in two minutes and lasts for up to 7-8 hours.

We are looking for distributors for this amazing product and other products in the new health and beauty range that has just been launched in the UK by Jeunesse. This is an amazing opportunity - please call or visit my Facebook page for more information.

Suffering from troublesome hot flushes and night sweats? Not all women can, or want to, take HRT. And sometimes dietary supplements and complementary remedies

aren’t effective. If this applies to you, speak to your GP, who may be able to prescribe some alternative medicines for you to try.

In the Spring 2015 issue of The Menopause Exchange newsletter, GP specialist Dr Sarah Gray looks at the evidence behind four prescribed HRT alternatives: clonidine; antidepressants; gabapentin; and progesterone/progestogens. Her article also includes the herb black cohosh, which may help hot flushes in the short term >

“HRT isn’t suitable for everyone, but some women find it difficult to cope with severe flushes and sweats without any medication,” says Norma Goldman, founder and director of The Menopause Exchange. “If this applies to you, it’s important to be aware of any prescribed alternatives, especially those backed by clinical research, such as clonidine, certain antidepressants and gabapentin. If you prefer something natural, black cohosh may be suitable.”

Black cohosh root extract is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the relief of symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats and temporary changes in mood, based on traditional use only. It’s available from Holland and Barrett, priced at £10.35 for 30 tablets (30 days supply) ^

The Menopause Exchange, which was established in 1999, is completely independent and is not sponsored by any companies. It provides impartial, easily understood information to women and healthcare professionals.

Peterborough’s Monthly Curiosity Shop, ‘HANDMADE FOR YOU’ is a regular monthly event, offering an addictive array

Previously based at the beautiful St John’s Church in Cathedral Square, the organisers have now taken these popular craft events on tour. They’ll be setting up at various locations in Peterborough throughout the year, and invite you to come and experience their Handmade ‘roadshow’ for yourself!

There are new stalls at each event, but regulars include stunning jewellery, beautiful knitted and crocheted accessories, fabulous felting, wonderful woodturning, and gorgeous handmade scented candles, spa sets, soft furnishings and cards.

Local artists often sell their work here too and what’s more, admission is free!

Original, hand-made jewellery designs from Stamford-based silversmith,

Stephanie Hynes. Bespoke work welcome.

t: 07712 001 664 serendipitysilver.net

SerendipitySilver my just turned 70year old Mother-in-Law exclaims. When I ask why not, she simply replies “because it’s full of old women”. You see, even old

women think the WI is full of old women and the fact is this is simply not true.

Admittedly there are many long standing WIs out there where the membership has aged, but you’ll find these mostly in outlying villages. move further in towards the cities or towns and you’ll find a whole new world of cocktail drinking, tattoo sporting, politically savvy, vintage revival, let’s celebrate all that is womanly, powerful and young(ish) women.

I joined my WI aged 40. I wasn’t the youngest then and I am still not the youngest now. It was a new WI set up simply because local women wanted to be able to meet and make friends with other women. It’s not until you get into it that you realise the WI is so much more than that preconceived idea so many of you share with my Mother-in-Law. In fact in December 2012, the Iron Maidens WI in Liscard, Merseyside was started. The branch is considered an ‘alternative’

one, with many members sporting tattoos, piercings and wildly coloured hair and was opened with the intention of being an option for women interested in rock music, burlesque, goth culture, steampunk and all things retro.

Yes, in the main, it’s still about jam, knitting, jewellery making, quilting and any manner of crafts and home-baking but it is also about celebrating women of all ages from all backgrounds and interests and more importantly it’s

about laughing so hard that you have to set yourself a reminder to buy some panty liners for the next month’s meeting!

However, look deeper still and you will find one of the largest non-political campaigning groups in the UK with over 205,000 members across 6500 WIs. That’s a whole heap of powerful forthright womanhood campaigning, on your behalf, for more midwives, action on climate change, action against domestic abuse, keeping libraries open, highlighting the need for more Organ Donors and much, much more.

So now you know! Hands up for anyone who wants to give it a go? www.thewi.org.uk ^

Parkinson’s

FactFile• Parkinson’s disease is a progressive

neurological condition

• It affects 1 in 500 people in the UK

• Symptoms and progression are different for everyone

• Parkinson’s is caused by the lack of dopamine, the chemical needed to send signals from the brain to the rest of the body that help co-ordinate movement and speech

• By the time a person is diagnosed, over 80% of dopamine has gone

• Parkinson’s is usually associated with a tremor, but can cause issues with finer motor and cognitive skills, balance, stiff and painful limbs

• There is no known cure as yet

• Parkinson’s is not life threatening

• Parkinson’s UK is a registered charity that is not statutory funded

• There are branches of Parkinson’s UK all over Britain. We have a branch in Peterborough. If you would like further info, please call our branch secretary, Sue McNally on 01733-229190 or email:[email protected]

By Louisa Parr, North Bretton, Peterborough

It’s safe to say that most people take their health for granted, including

me, once. But after feeling slightly ‘off kilter’ and with several futile visits to my GP, I eventually found myself, at the age of 42, sitting in a Neurologists office with a completely unexpected diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. My world and for all those in it, was to change, irrevocably.

That was seven years ago and as I look back, it’s obvious that my lifestyle has changed significantly. Having a progressive neurological condition hasn’t just impeded on the physical aspects of my life, it’s also had a huge impact on my attitude towards it too. To worry about what can’t be changed is a waste of my precious energy. Acceptance of the nuances and limitations of what Parkinson’s brings over time has been difficult, but with four beautiful sons (aged between 16 & 26) and my partner to consider, what were the alternatives? Crawl under a rock and

die or give Parkinson’s the

‘two fingered salute’ and

face it!? Needless to say,

I chose the latter.

The key to success at

A poll of 1,000 women has found that husbands who spent more than £1,000 on an engagement ring

were less likely to get divorced. The survey

interviewed 1,000 women from across the

country, and it revealed that 43 per cent of

women surveyed received an engagement

ring worth less than £300, while 26 per cent

had received a ring valued between £300

and £1,000.

Of those surveyed who are now divorced -

a total of 150 women - just one had been

given an engagement ring worth over £5,000

before the marriage came to an end. 54 per

cent of the divorced women had actually been

given rings worth less than £300, which didn’t

leave a great impression.

“I must admit my ex-husband, who was quite

wealthy, spent just £200 on my engagement

ring,” claimed divorced Sandra Graham.

“I can’t say I was very impressed when he told me how much it cost, but we had six good years

together and are still friends, although I do rib him about how much he spent now and again.”

Marlow’s Diamonds, a leading provider

of diamond engagement rings, takes

a keen interest in reports such as this.

A spokesperson provided this statement:

“Perhaps the results of this survey shouldn’t be too surprising, as you can’t imagine many women being happy with a ring worth less than £300! An engagement ring is something to cherish for your entire life, so it makes sense to take the time and effort to find the perfect one for your partner. You can get all kinds of different designs and styles, but if you need help choosing any reputable diamond specialist should be able to give you all the assistance you need.”

Marlow’s Diamonds are one of the UK’s

leading certified diamond specialists and they

take great pride in sourcing all diamonds with

extreme care and due diligence. They only

LIKE IT OR NOT, we all have them. Little. Large. Firm. Soft. Some which pass the pencil test, others that swing pendulously

somewhere around your navel. The sheer diversity of knockers is immense. But whatever you’ve been blessed with, your breasts need looking after.

Recent research shows that more and more women over the age of forty-seven, are being called for routine breast cancer screening but are delaying booking their appointments. In an alarming number of cases, some are simply not going at all.

Earlier this year, I visited my doctor regarding a pain in my left breast. I’d had it on and off for about six months. She examined me and neither felt nor saw anything to cause alarm but because the pain was in only one breast, she referred me to the Breast Clinic. I felt apprehensive but seeing as no lump had been detected, I was confident I was absolutely fine and the pain must be down to the fact I was trying to squeeze my 36G hooters into a 34F bra in the vain hope that they might ‘look a bit smaller’.

I was telephoned the very next day with an appointment for a mammogram in a fortnights’ time. As the day loomed closer, I started to get a little jittery but as I strolled into the clinic with my partner, just a few days after my forty-fifth birthday, I was more concerned about my breasts exploding in the mammogram machine than anything sinister being discovered.

I sat in the waiting room, surrounded by women just like me, some younger, some older, some who were obviously going through treatment and others who were there for their five-year check. I was amazed at just how many of us there were.

I was called in to see the surgeon and she examined me. Like my GP and myself, she could feel nothing abnormal. I asked her if the mammogram hurt, having been told it was a similar pain to ‘trapping your tit in the fridge door’. Now, I don’t know about you, but that particularly harrowing ordeal has never happened to me before so I had no idea what to expect. The surgeon laughed and said it may be a little uncomfortable but it didn’t hurt. I almost fell of my chair when the nurse in the consulting

room with us raised her eyebrows and asked her how the hell she knew that, seeing as she’d never had one before! I frowned and told her that she needed to practice what she preached and maybe give it a whirl.

I was ushered through into the mammogram room, with its mood lighting and monster machinery. I eyed The Puppy Pulveriser suspiciously and was told to strip to the waist. Within seconds, I’d been contorted into a very peculiar lopsided position with breast number one lifted and arranged, like a loaf of bread about to be sliced, on the flat-plate. The mammographer turned a dial, the upper plate moved down and my breast proceeded to flatten. I braced myself. But the pain never came. And it wasn’t particularly uncomfortable. In fact, I hardly felt a thing.

Mammogram over, I was told to dress and sit back in the waiting room. If the mammogram was clear I could go home. Great! Ordeal over!

Seconds later I was guided into another dimly-lit room and told somebody would be with me shortly. A radiographer appeared and informed me my mammogram was normal but because my breast tissue was very dense, I needed an ultrasound. I almost told him there was no need to insult my breast tissue but I didn’t think he’d get the joke.

I whipped my bra off yet again and he asked me where I’d been feeling the pain. He put the transducer on my boob, pressed down a little and said four words that I will never forget. You have a tumour. The following few minutes were a blur. I was just about to go home, now I’m bloody dying. At first he tried to aspirate the tumour in case it was a fluid-filled cyst. It wasn’t. Next came anaesthetic and four separate biopsies. I was cleaned, stitched and patched up. I was told my tumour was a double tumour connected by a stalk. All I could visualise was a couple of vine tomatoes

growing in my boob. I burst into floods of tears and the nurse gave me a hug. The tumour was measured, I was told not to worry and I’d be called back in two weeks time for the results.

Two weeks time… The most anxious, frightening, exhausting two weeks of my life. I prepared myself for bad news. I booked a hair appointment to have my long hair lopped off. I even mentally planned my own funeral.

Fourteen traumatic, tear-soaked days later I was given the all-clear. My tumour was a benign fibroadeoma that had probably been lurking there since I was a teenager. The relief was overwhelming. I went out and got drunk on champagne.

But the stark realisation is, many, many women don’t get the all-clear. 49,900 women get diagnosed with breast cancer each year. That’s one hundred

and thirty women a day. Putting it into visual terms, imagine all the mums in the average school playground at home time. THAT many women.

Early detection is the key to survival. If it wasn’t for the ultrasound I received, my hidden tumour would never have been detected. I was fortunate. I didn’t have cancer. But at least I now know I have a couple of cherry tomatoes residing in my left boob. How many women out there right now,

are walking around, oblivious to the fact that they too

have tumours? If you can’t feel a lump, how can you possibly know it’s there? And that is why 32 women a day die from this terrible disease. Quite simply, they get

diagnosed too late. >

Big or small; let’s save them all!

< Whatever your fears, your anxieties, your concerns about attending routine screening appointments, the bottom line is they could save your life. Ok, you will have to endure the The Puppy Pulveriser but hey, it’s no worse than getting your tit trapped in the fridge door and I’m pretty sure Anastasia Steele’s bangers encountered much more discomfort during a manhandling by Christian Grey than you will ever encounter having a mammogram. If, like me, you’re breast tissue is intellectually challenged, insist on a follow-up ultrasound. If a lump is found, don’t panic. Eight out of ten lumps are benign. And if you do end up joining The Club, as it is affectionately known, just remember breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer in the world. You will receive the best possible treatment from our wonderful NHS and you WILL get better.

Remember the only person who can save you is you. When you get that letter, head straight for the phone, make that call and make like you’re in Mr. Grey’s Red Room ^

VoluDerm is a new technology designed to treat pretty much the entire gamut of skin concerns. An innovative non-surgical treatment for wrinkles, scars, wrinkle prevention and skin

rejuvenation, it’s a firm favourite with celebrities, including the Britain’s Got Talent judge, Amanda Holden, who reportedly ditched botox in 2012 for a less invasive approach. It can work wonders on fine lines and sagging skin and can also smooth out and revitalise scar tissue including stretch marks

This minimally invasive procedure, delivered by Elysia Aesthetics & Beauty Clinic in Oundle, uses ultra-fine micro-pins to deliver radio frequency energy deep in to the layers of your skin. This stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which results in significant skin resurfacing. The procedure is virtually pain-free and requires no downtime. You may start to see an improvement after just one or two treatments, but expect to see full amazing results after three to eight.

This skin analysis images shows just how effectively VoluDerm technology works. On the left is before any treatment to the skin; on the right shows the skin one week after the first treatment. It is clear that the procedure has softened fine lines and eliminated dark spots after just one treatment.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND VOLUDERM

The key advantage of Hybrid Energy (HE) Technology is the combination Hot and electrical Invisible micro Ablation (IMA) provided via the HE applicator.

A disposable tip comprised of an array of micro needles is attached to the end the He applicator to facilitate treatment. Hot IMA facilitates smooth and painless penetration of these micro needles to target the deep dermis.

Electrical IMA then selectively ablates the target area using safe non-thermal energy, creating micro-wounds in the deep dermis. This triggers wound-healing and creates a dual effect in both the Epidermis and Dermis that delivers Dermal Volumizing, Collagen Regeneration, Elastin Growth and Auto-production of Hyaluronic Acid - all this without side effects or downtime.

Elysia Aesthetics & Beauty Clinic specialise in advanced facial and skin treatments which deliver exceptional results. They offer many treatments including paramedical procedures and permanent makeup, with a Platinum Elite makeup artist on hand for eyebrow, lip and eyeliner tattooing.

Before After

QB What made you decide to set up Larrington Life Coaching?

JL I had been working in the weight loss industry within a franchise format using counselling to help people to learn about their eating behaviours. Counselling generally looks back at the reasons behind unwanted behaviour patterns and can be quite challenging. I decided to train as a Life Coach as coaching is all about helping the client to move forward in a positive and goal orientated way.

QB What was the most difficult aspect of getting up and running?

JL Being self-employed is a challenge in itself. Knowing that you are entirely responsible for bringing in customers to earn your living is daunting for many people. For me, it offers freedom and choice. Yes, there are moments of self-doubt and

a regular wage packet can seem appealing, but choosing to do what I love, and working the hours I want to, more than compensate.

QB Who or what has been the biggest influence into helping make a success?

JL my dad had his own business and both my brothers have their own businesses, so I guess it’s in the blood. To be a success, I believe it’s important to have a consistent programme of learning and self-improvement.

QB What’s the best piece of advice you can give to someone setting up a business in Peterborough today?

JL Decide what you want to do and choose something you are passionate about. If you really believe in yourself and what you are doing, it’s easy to sell yourself as you will want to share your passion

QB What’s the one thing you wished you had known before you started your business?

JL It would be great to start a business with 15 years’ experience! It would save so many costly mistakes, but,

that’s not possible so it’s just a case of taking one step at a time, asking for advice and making the best decisions you can.

QB Why has your business been so successful?

JL Self-belief. That’s it really. I know I offer a great service. I know I am good at what I do and constantly improve my skill set. If you don’t believe in yourself, then no-one else will. Make sure you know what you’re doing, be willing to learn and self-improve and then let your customers know where to find you ^

Belinda has just celebrated seven years in practice, having set up on her own in May 2008. She was previously a partner at Peterborough solicitors Buckles for over

20 years. Her office is in Thorpe Wood, which she shares with her Associate, Michele Fielding, who is also a very experienced Family Law practitioner.

Together Belinda and Michele represent clients in all aspects of family law including divorce and cohabitation breakdown, financial settlements and child welfare cases dealing with the sharing of the children’s time between the separated parents.

Belinda’s expertise is in child welfare cases, being a long-standing member of the Law Society Children Panel and with an extensive background in acting for children and parents in the challenging arena of care proceedings. Belinda doesn’t have a legal aid franchise now but still represents foster parents and extended family members in public law cases, alongside the private law residence and contact applications. She will also advise on and make applications for adoptions and special guardianship orders.

Belinda Smith & Co is a strong supporter of clients using mediation as a way of resolving problems, particularly in child welfare matters, but mediation can also be a cost effective way of reaching a financial settlement. >

michele and Belinda are also qualified collaborative lawyers; a special accreditation with the national family law group Resolution, offering an alternative to traditional divorce proceedings. Collaborative law involves each party and their lawyers signing a binding agreement not to go to court on any disputed issues. Instead of the numerous exchange of letters and documents between the two parties, four-way meetings take place at a frequency and duration of the parties’ choosing, working towards a compromised settlement in respect of finances and child arrangements. If the process breaks down

because one or both parties decide they have to go to Court, everyone parts company and new lawyers are instructed.

Clients tend to come to the practice for help after a relationship has broken down, but Belinda Smith & Co is very keen to promote prevention rather than cure with the

drafting of pre-nuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements. Increasing numbers of people choose to live together as a family rather than marry but forget that such an arrangement carries with it very little legal protection. A cohabitation agreement near the beginning of a relationship will provide peace of mind for both of you ^

Founded by mary Green and her

daughter, Charlie in early 2014,

Backthenbags upcycles vintage scarves

into bags. The scarves are sourced and

carefully selected through vintage/antique

dealers by Mary who has to “feel” it to want

to upcycle it. Sounds pretentious, but mary is

anything but pretentious! She simply has an

absolute love of vintage and the energy and

stories that each scarf has to tell.

She says “I just love the thought that each scarf

has had adventures, has maybe travelled, has

gained experience marks and has real stories

to tell. My mind goes into overdrive when I find

a beautiful vintage scarf - I start to imagine all

of the things that may have been experienced

by the person who was using it. For instance, I

once had a lovely silk 1950s scarf advertising

Pontins holiday camps; I think about it and the

fact that it was probably bought by a lady as a

souvenir of her holiday - who was she with? Did

she have a good time? Amazing! Or there was

the 1950s American scarf advertising a Tobacco

Exhibition; the bathing beauties on the scarf

were holding a giant cigar - it was incredible

and it would never be allowed now!

We make each bag lovingly and line them with

a contemporary lining for strength and stability

(remembering that some of these scarves

are 70 years old and more!) We also use >

Swarovski crystals to

give them a three

dimensional feel.

Each bag has a number

of authenticity as each one is absolutely unique

and there will never be another the same.

The sad thing is that a lot of vintage scarves are

shoved in the back of a draw and forgotten. Having

them made into a bag can really give them a new

life. A lot of our clients have “special” or “precious”

scarves - maybe a scarf that their mother or

grandmother wore and they don’t want to get rid

of it - we make them into bags so they can have the

memory of that special person with them to use on

a daily basis. It is a very popular service.

We are currently in discussions with a large London

shop and a store in New York, so who knows where

the future will take us!

We show at vintage and craft shows throughout

the southeast and supply selected shops in the uK.

Cosmetic skin treatments may seem a world away from dental work, but for dental surgeon Victoria Victorova,

it has been a logical progression from one to the other. Victoria is a dentist at Herlington Dental Practice in Peterborough and during the last 15 years has been mainly involved with restorative and cosmetic dentistry – but, increasingly, she has been working with injectable wrinkle reducing agents and skin rejuvenation. ‘What is a bright smile without a beautiful looking, healthy complexion?’ she says.

Victoria believes that clean living – healthy diet and exercise, a good amount of sleep and avoiding or minimising smoking, stress and alcohol consumption – is the best foundation for a good complexion, but small amounts of Botox, natural dermal fillers and ‘skin needling’ procedure can also help to enhance ones features achieving a youthful, refreshed look. The latest anti-ageing treatment is the so-called “skin needling”. “It brings a new dimension to facial anti-ageing treatments,’ explains Victoria. ‘It naturally targets and stimulates the skin’s ability to regenerate itself”

Victoria administers this treatment via a new device called Rejuvapen, a micro-needling system from the US, launched in the UK in June 2014. ‘Rejuvapen offers the latest needle design and accuracy, and improved, controlled patient specific settings for optimal

results. It avoids epithelial tearing and bleeding – a common problem with many needling systems on the market such as Dermarollers. What’s truly unique is it’s used in conjunction with growth factor serum which works on a cellular level, regulating cell cycle and enhancing cell proliferation, healing and regeneration.’

Naturally, the word ‘needle’ may sound a little scary. But is the treatment painful? ‘Not at all,’ says Victoria. ‘We use a numbing cream, so it feels just like a relaxing 1hr facial treatment.’ In spite of this, Victoria stresses that the treatment is not something you would expect to find in your average high street beauty salon – for quite significant reasons. ‘Rejuvapen is a sophisticated piece of equipment which should be administered by a medically trained professional with a clear appreciation of facial and skin anatomy. Strict infection control protocols have to be followed during treatment that only a surgery can provide. It works on a deeper level than your average beauty facial or a peel treatment.’

‘Rejuvapen is a great natural booster for tired looking skin as it encourages collagen production which is crucial in keeping skin taut, just as in youth. Rejuvapen has also been designed to treat acne scarring and skin pigmentation. And the best thing about Rejuvapen is it is 100% natural!’

Treatment sessions last up to one hour, and the initial consultation is free ^

I am delighted to announce that we can exclusively offer the

most powerful, innovative micro needling system on the market

at the Herlington Dental Practice. This latest fractional collagen

induction therapy system is called Rejuvapen. Straight from the

USA Rejuvapen utilizes 9 precisely spaced micro needles in a small

cartridge to create invisible, vertical, micro perforations, into the

dermis of the skin. This triggers the self-repairing property of the

skin and is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out.

Your skin will become firmer and, regains its elasticity, fine lines

and wrinkles visibly reduced, pores become finer, circulation is

stimulated and the overall condition of the skin improves. Rejuvapen

also treats acne scarring, burns and pigmentation. The results speak

for themselves and it is 100% natural and pain free. Each patient will

have a free initial consultation to discuss their individual anti-aging

requirements. As part of your treatment plan you will also receive a

Patient recovery kit, which will continue to turbo charge the healing

process, maximise results and address all the core aspects of

maintaining a youthful complexion. Each session lasts about an hour

and the results are visible within weeks.

Magical Matcha

Wowee! Have you tried super-concentrated, energy-boosting, metabolism-stimulating, anti-aging matcha green tea yet?

This potent Japanese green tea powder is unlike traditional green tea; matcha preparation involves growing the tea plants in the shade (increasing the chlorophyll level) before they’re harvested. The leaves are then handpicked, steamed, dried and ground into a fine green powder with not a tea bag in sight! This means the whole leaf is ingested, making it a more potent source of nutrients than traditional green tea.

Used by Zen Buddhist monks to stay awake for meditation weeks, and by Japanese students cramming for exams, it is now becoming very popular over here... and I’m not surprised! In addition to providing vitamins and minerals, matcha is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been linked to protection against heart disease and cancer, as well as better blood sugar regulation, and blood pressure reduction. Without any kind of edginess or anxiety that sometimes comes with a strong

coffee, the caffeine content in matcha creates an “alert calm” due to a natural substance it contains called l-theanine, which induces relaxation without drowsiness.

It’s been shown to reduce cortisol (a stress hormone known to drive appetite and increase belly fat), lower inflammation (a known trigger of premature aging and disease), curb impulsive eating, lower blood pressure, and boost self-esteem and compassion. What’s not to love?

It is expensive, but you only need half a teaspoon per cup, so it goes a long way. You can also add it to fruit juice, smoothies, baking, ice-cream and lattes if the taste isn’t for you. I have mine in a shot of fruit juice each morning and it gives me sustained energy throughout the day. I definitely feel more ‘zingy’!

Available online or in selected health food shops. There are several brands out there, but go for a premium grade as you get what you pay for with matcha. Tea Pigs have a 30g tub for around £20 available from Ocado ^

Too few cooks... by Stef Hynes

A friend dropped by this week for an early morning cuppa. He caught me at that stage in between getting up, and starting work, still pottering around the kitchen and

gazing out of the window.

As I filled the kettle up, he stared, with undisguised confusion, into the recently-used porridge pan still resting on the stove.

“What is THAT?” says he. I swear, he couldn’t have sounded more surprised if I’d had a simmering cauldron of newt’s eyes and frog’s toes.

“Errr...Porridge” I replied. He then eyed the syrup on the kitchen counter and asked, “Do you put syrup in it?”

I confirmed that I did indeed (defensively adding that it’s a good, healthy breakfast!). Now, there is a point as to why I’m relating this somewhat mundane story. My friend then informed me, in a tone suggesting that I am astonishingly unaware of the ways of the world, “You can buy that in a bag y’know.”

Well, I’m happy to share with you all that I did not know that, but this little exchange had me mounting my ‘cook proper food’ hobby-horse in no time flat.

Why, oh why, would anybody, who is in their own home, with full cooking facilities at their disposal, buy ready-made porridge in a bag? With the syrup already added, no less! I know some of you will be reading this and saying there’s no time, rushing around in the morning etc. But seriously, I put the kettle on, put the porridge on, make tea, and leave the hob on the lowest heat. By the time I’m out of the shower it’s ready. My friend cited having to

clean up the pan as a good reason to buy it in a bag. However, I challenge this! Surely, having to scrape sticky, gloopy porridge out of a bag has an equal, if not higher, hassle-factor. Quite apart from the fact that someone else made it, and it probably won’t taste as good as mine!

I’m very old-school about cookery, the subject of ‘proper cooking’ is one I frequently find myself debating with friends. Honestly, my friends are a pretty smart bunch. They have jobs, families, HD eyebrows, homes, gym memberships and all that jazz. Therefore I am constantly astounded by the fact that so many of them choose to buy ready-made, packaged, chemically-enhanced foodstuffs because they are of the belief (mistaken in my opinion) that it takes too long to cook from scratch, or, that they cannot cook.

It’s just not that complicated... if you can read, you can cook. Let’s take the humble tomato soup, for example. Hands up... who loves soup? Like any child of the seventies, I was raised on Heinz tomato soup. And whilst I have nothing against this staple of British homes, and yes, it does only take five minutes to have it steaming in a bowl, (or 30 seconds of you’re a microwave person) if you can allow half an hour, you can have your own home-made version, and absolutely to your own taste ^

REAL FOOD top tip QUICk & EASY SOUPChop up a pile of tomatoes, a large onion and a large potato - chuck ‘em in a baking tray, add some olive oil and bang them into a hot oven for half an hour. Put your feet up, read QueenBee, then whizz your concoction in a blender and

season to taste. You can add a handful of basil, parsley, or a swirl of cream. You can make it taste exactly the way you want it; it’s fresh and healthy and you can impress your

friends. Keep it simple boys and girls! > Watch this space in the next issue of QueenBee for another Real Food top tip.

Hello! I’m so happy to have the opportunity to write about a subject I’m so passionate

about - growing your own food!My name is Lucy and I’m a 22 year old mother and music student in Peterborough. I want to spread the word about producing your own food, at home, as a family. A diet rich in nutrients, minerals and antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, grains etc) not only boosts your immune system, detoxes your digestive system and boosts your brain function, but also slims down your chances of developing many diseases and conditions that are common in modern society. Introducing a good mix of wholesome foods nurtures your body from the inside, as well as your mind – giving you a physical, emotional and psychological boost whilst helping to protect you against lots of nasties!

Food is something we all need from the very first day of our lives to the last. That’s quite radical; a life-long dependency on food intake. Fuel the

body with the right food = cells function = we function. So, I think it’s important to know what we’re putting in, and how that, in turn, affects how our bodies function. What’s the ingredients in our ingredients? What are these ingredients doing to us when we can’t even see them?

A huge majority of food products readily available to us (and our budgets) contain a vast array of dangers to our bodies – huge amounts of

detrimental sugar is added to make us enjoy the product (addiction to sugar is quite normal!), trans-fats are added to give food a longer shelf-life, whilst boosting our bad cholesterols. MSG damages our nerve cells and increases risk of illness and disease… this is to name a mere few - of thousands (each of which having a thousand names!). It is no wonder so many health problems continue to affect so many

of us and our families.... it’s all a money game and our health is losing.

But we don’t have to play! We have the resources in simple research to find out what we’re doing to ourselves. And what better way to know what’s in/on our food, than to grow it from scratch, as a family, for the family – not tampered or interfered with… pure nutrients for our bodies! >

Food for thought...Get growing...You’ll need a few square metres of outdoor space, a few packets of seeds, some pots and a sack of compost. Carefully sourced (Pound Shops are great for garden products in-season) all of this can cost you just £5!

The fascinating process of growing and nurturing life is great for everyone in the family, even the tiny ones. My two year old daughter just loves pottering about in the garden with her little watering can!

Start off with small pots, fill them with compost and press a seed or two (check the packet) roughly a centimetre into the centre, covering it back up. Keep lightly, regularly watered in a dark place until your babies sprout up in search for sun. Then, a warm, sunny windowsill is perfect if you don’t have access to a greenhouse. Let them grow stable roots into their pots - keep them regularly watered and then take them outside. Plant them into a sunny spot treated with a little compost and love them throughout the season for a full, satisfying, delicious crop packed with pure nutrition for all the family. Happy growing! ^

BUSINESS ADVICE HIVEBusy Bee

Q

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Exciting times ahead Daisy! Setting up your own business is challenging and rewarding. Here are some tips to get you started.

Learn to manage money To succeed in business you must be able to manage money. After you’ve worked out your start up costs and decided how you are going to fund your business you will need to be able to manage cash flow, invoicing, credit control, banking, tax returns and so on. A good idea is to open a business account so the money from your business is kept separate from your personal account. Online business banking has many benefits.

You may want to consider using invoice software like Debitoor, www.debitoor.com for invoicing and excel spreadsheets for accounts. Either manage the accounts yourself or consider getting a book keeper or accountant.

Be realistic Decide how much time you can afford to commit; part-time, full-time, spare time and how much money you ideally would like to earn. Be realistic. A business can take up to two years to establish.

Your business name Now the exciting bit! Coming up with a name for your company. Your business

name must create the desired impression in your potential customers minds, what your business does and what you stand for in the market.

The name will be part of your branding development and communications plan too. It will play a key part in promoting your new business to your target market and help decide which marketing communication tools to use.

It’s also worth checking if the domain (website and email addresses) are available for the name you have chosen before you register your business.

Good luck Busy Bee! ^

A sting in the tailby Tracy Hefferon

WE ALL KNOW ALCOHOL is bad for us. We are repeatedly told by public health officials that we must limit

ourselves to fourteen poxy units a week. Alcohol damages your health, your looks, your bank balance and makes you fat.

So what? So do men. But do we abstain from them? Do we heck.

Alcohol– namely wine – is one of life’s staples. For many, a day without wine is akin to a major electrical appliance catastrophe. We couldn’t manage without our fridge, for example, just as we can’t manage without a chilled glass of rosé at the end of the day.

Wine lifts the spirits. It relaxes us. Calms us. Our days are long and stressful! Wine helps alleviate the pressure of our busy lives. And, contrary to popular belief, it is good for us… extraordinarily good for us, in fact. Granted, we must limit ourselves to 175ml a day, maybe just a splash more, but that one precious glassful is the elixir of life. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, promoted wine as part of a healthy diet. He even went as far as saying it should be used to alleviate the pain of childbirth, which sounds infinitely more enjoyable than sucking on nitrous oxide for hours.

Red wine is king when it comes to delivering the best health benefits, although white wine has been proven to boost both lung health and function, so it might be worth considering incorporating a glass into your weekly quota; just so you can breathe easy…

As for the ruby red variety; where to start? It reduces depression and helps prevent a wide range of cancers from breast to colon to lung. It raises levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the body, which safeguard against heart disease and, amazingly, reduces the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by half compared to those who never touch a drop.

Red wine’s miracle ingredient is Resveratrol – a chemical found in red grape skin – and this stuff is literally the marvel of the medical world. It helps prevent everything from diabetes to blindness, ageing to sunburn damage!

So, go ahead! Open that bottle of Cabernet, kick back and enjoy – safe in the knowledge you are preserving your body from the inside out. And remember… if it was good enough for Jesus then it’s good enough for you. Cheers! ^
