VISIT OF THE PATRONESS

Her Majesty the OEeen graciously expressed a wish to pay the College an informal visit on Wednesday, 16 February 1949, and arrived accompanied by her secretary, Major Harvey and by the Lady Hyde. In the absence of the President in British Guiana she was received by a small group of Fellows and their wives, with whom she had lunch in the Lodge. Afterwards she visited the Library, and, before leaving for King's College, spent some time in the Gallery.

A further token of Her Majesty's interest in the College was a suggestion that the wording of the grace in English, used at the end of Dinner in Hall, might be modified. The following form of words, suggested by Her Majesty, is now in use:

For these and all His mercies, for the Q±eens our Foundresses and for our other Benefactors, God's Holy Name be blessed and praised. God preserve our King and Church.

We place on record the earlier form of grace:

'For these and all His mercies God's Holy Name be blessed and praised, for our Foundresses and Benefactors ... God preserve our King and Church.'

THE SOCIETY

The President returned in March from British Guiana, where he had been since early in December as Chairman of the Commission, whose report is now published, investigating problems in the sugar industry. He has also been re-appointed to the Borough Council of Cambridge as a University member.

Mr Seltman has· proceeded to the Degree of Doctor of Letters. Dr McCullagh represented the University at the Commemora

tion in September 1949, of the Centenary of the foundation of the OEeen' s University of Belfast.

Mr Bevington and Mr Latham, formerly Fellows, have both proceeded to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

On 4 December 1949, the christening took place in the Chapel of Charles Paul Seltman, son of Arthur John and Nathalie Frances Seltman, grandson of Dr Seltman.

THE FABRIC OF THE COLLEGE

1949-50

The main work undertaken during the past year has been the repair of the banks of the river just below the wooden bridge. Before the big floods of 1947, the wall which forms the west bank of the river along the Grove had showed signs of subsiding, the worst symptoms being a few yards downstream from the wooden bridge. Before the floods occurred, a length of this wall had fallen into the river, and the damage was made much worse by the high water in March 1947. Eventually, about 120 feet of the wall was destroyed, leaving the path in the Grove rather unsafe.

Further inspection of the damage to the banks was possible when the river was lowered at a later date, and some erosion was found under the wall of the President's garden, on the east bank. The College decided early in 1949 to repair all this damage at the same time.

In planning the work, the College had a great deal of help from Mr H. E. Midgley (1899), whose wide experience of civil engineering has been of the greatest value during the repairs. The College entrusted the work of repair to Messrs John Howard and Co. Ltd., of Buckingham Gate, London.

While the necessary licences were being obtained for repairing the walls, the President drew the attention of the engineers to signs of movement which were apparent in the Lodge, where cracks had appeared in the plaster of the walls and one of the doors jammed in its frame. It was decided that, while all the engineering equipment was on the spot, the underwater foundations of the Lodge should be inspected.

Accordingly, when work started in July 1949, steel sheet-piles were driven in on both sides of the river, on the east bank around the President's Lodge from the wooden bridge to the start of the existing timber piles at the end of the garden wall, and around the damaged part of the President's garden wall. On the west bank, about r20 feet of piles were driven from the wooden bridge along the damaged wall of the Grove.

The foundations of the Lodge were inspected, when the water within the sheet-piling dam was pumped out, but fortunately

5

Page 6: QUEENS' COLLEGE 1948-1949 · LEONARD JAMES POTTS, M.A., Director of Studies in English. EDWIN ARTHUR MAXWELL, PH.D., Praelector, Keeper of the College Records and Director of Studies

there were no signs of extensive damage to the foundations of the

Lodge. One large hole in the foundations had been plugged with

bags of cement in the course of the repairs to the Essex building

which were carried out in 1938. To make sure that there should

be no movement of the Lodge foundations, the space between

the sheet-piles and the footings of the Lodge foundations was

filled with concrete, and the top parts of the sheet-piles removed.

This provides lateral support to the Lodge foundations. All the

concrete is some distance below water level, so that the appearance

of the building is unaltered. The repair of the wall of the President's garden gave little

trouble, and the work then moved to the rebuilding of the wall

along the Grove. The old wall had mostly fallen into the river,

and so it was possible to fill in between the sheet-piling and the

bank with concrete, to give a level foundation for the new wall.

The steps down to the river near the wooden bridge had partly

collapsed, and these were rebuilt. A new wall has been built

along the whole length of the damaged part, reproducing exactly

the line of the old wall. The only difference in appearance is caused

by the enforced use of red brick for this part of the wall, in place

of the original grey. When the wall was complete, the upper

part of the sheet-piling was removed. At the time of writing (February 1950) the work is almost

finished, and by the summer the bank of the Grove should be

re-turfed and all signs of the damage removed. Throughout the

work the College has had several visits from Mr Kerley and

Mr Widger, of Messrs John Howards and also from Mr Midgley.

The actual operations have been carried out by Mr F. Day,

John Howard's foreman, who has lived in the Grove during the

work.

THE UNITED CLUBS

ROWING

Captain: D. T. Holland. Vice-Captain: A. Bazille Corbin.

Secretary: E. A.G. Warlow and C. P. Warren (Summer Term).

Commit!ee: F. R. Spink.

The club started the year with a membership of sixty-six. In the

Clinker Fours a ~eens' boat reached the final only to be beaten by L.M.B.C. In the Fairbairn Cup the six eights entered went up

a total of I08 places, the first boat finishing 14th. H. B. Cochrane won the Phillips Sculls. In the Lent Races the five eights entered

made ten bumps, the first boat going up two places to finish 7th.

Six eights were entered for the May Races and the first boat

finished 7th; the 3rd and 4th boats each made four bumps. At Henley, the first eight reached the second round of the Ladies

Plate, the first four was beaten by Trinity Hall in the Visitors Fours and the second four reached the fourth round of the

Wyfold Fours.

RUGBY FOOTBALL

Captain: W. B. Holmes. Vice-Captain: M. T. Maloney.

Secretary: I. W. Purvis.

The club had a large membership and ran three XV s but results

were not as good as in the preceding year. 1n the Leagues the

first XV had a struggle to avoid relegation, but the club's first and

second XVs played many other fixtures against neighbouring towns. In the Cup the club beat Peterhouse but succumbed to

a very strong Downing side in the 2nd round. The club regrets to record the tragic death from typhoid of

its Captain W. B. Holmes who brought so much honour to the College.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

Captain: F. G. Farman. Secretary: J. T. Stone.

Committee: G. R. Canner.

The club had a fairly successful season but as many men were chosen for the 'Varsity and Falcons the first XI tended to be inconsistent. Nevertheless, the club finished 4th in Division I of the League. In the Cup Competition the team had two easy victories over Trinity and Sidney Sussex but lost to St Catharine's by 3-2, after a dour struggle. The second XI played very well. It lost only one match during the season, and won the second XI League in both terms. Many friendly matches were played against outside opposition.

HOCKEY

Captain: D. I. Pearce. Vice-Captain: R. S. K. Riddle.

Secretary: D. Bryant.

The club fared moderately in the League and managed to retain its position in the First Division. In the Cup Competition the dub reached the final only to be beaten by King's. The second and third teams also enjoyed successful seasons.

SQUASH RACKETS

Captain: J. A. S. Mowat. Secretary: D. P. C. Stileman.

The first team was a strong one but did not really fulfil expectations. However it managed to win more than half its matches, including the fixture against OEeen' s, Oxford. The second team was enthusiastic and did well in the League. T. Griffith-Jones played several times for the Ganders.

ETON FIVES

Captain: J. W. E. Jones. Secretary: G. M. Cochrane.

In the pairs competition in the Michaelmas Term, two pairs reached the third round. In the Cup Competition in the Lent Term, OEeens' lost to Clare in the second round.

RUGBY FIVES

Captain: R. F. Thomas. Secretary: G. A. Cranfield.

In the Fives league the first and second pairs won half their matches. R. F. Thomas and G. A. Cranfield reached the quarter finals of the pairs competition.

TABLE TENNIS

Captain: M. E. Monk.com. Secretary: D. E. Cronin.

In Divisions I, II and III of the University League OEeens' three teams achieved comfortable final positions, the first team finishing fourth, and in the Knockout Competition the College team was unfortunate in losing in the semi-final.

LAWN TENNIS

Captain: S. P. 0. Kumi. Secretary: D.R. Cawston.

Committee: E. A. Wilson.

The two lawn tennis teams finished the season with a mediocre league record but the matches won were won decisively. If the players who were called upon regularly for the University had been available for College matches it is probable that the record would have been very good, for their presence in the team entered for the Inter-College tournament resulted in our winning both the Singles and Doubles competitions. In the University Open Tournament K. G. L. Isaacs won the Singles for the second year in succession and he and S. P. 0. Kumi won the Doubles.

LACROSSE

Captain: D. B. Wallace. Secretary: P. B. Bagnall.

The club was top of the Inter-College League and reached the semi-final of the Inter-College Cup competition. The season was very successful and the club is increasing in numbers.

SWIMMING

Captain: H. P. Gray Secretary: J. W. Ridgway

The club had a fair season, reaching the second round of the Water Polo Cup competition, and going down by 4 goals to 3, to opponents who, on their record, seemed invincible.

RIFLE CLUB

Captain: E. A. G. Warlow. Hon. Secretary: S. H. Thomas.

The club has been well represented in all branches of shooting during the past year.

In the Full-Bore shooting H. W. Symons represented the University at Bisley in the Chancellor's Plate, which they won. He was in the King's 300 also. I. C. Dow was also at Bisley. During the Lent Term H. W. Symons won the Caldwell Cup.

In the Small-Bore shooting the College supplied half the victorious team in the Heslop Cup match against Oxford: E. A. G. Warlow, S. H. Thomas, H. W. Symons and P. F. Dixon.

In the Easter Term H. W. Symons and S. H. Thomas won the College Pairs Cup (Macdonald). S. H. Thomas won the Individual (Cronin) Cup. E. A.G. Warlow and S. H. Thomas tied for the leading average and were both awarded the Captain's Spoon. R. A. Biddulph shot for the University second VIII.

In the College Revolver Pairs H. W. Symons and S. H. Thomas were placed 5th out of seven.

SAINT MARGARET SOCIETY

The Gramophone Concerts were held on Sunday evenings throughout the year in the Dean's rooms. In the Michaelmas Term there were two concerts performed by members of the College; the first, in the Chaplain's rooms, was so well attended that the second, which attracted an exceptionally large audience, was held in the Upper Fitzpatrick Room. During the Lent Term there was an Organ Recital in the Chapel, given by Mr R. G. Harris of Oriel College, Oxford. The May Week concert was made particularly memorable by the harpsichord-playing of Mrs_ Potts and the singing of Mrs Chadwick and by the revival of the St Margaret Singers.

SAINT BERNARD SOCIETY

President: D. J. Y absley

Vice-President : J. F. Kingham.

Secretary: C. J. Cunliffe Pugh.

Committee: E. G. Rayner, M. J. C. Wheeler.

The year started badly for the Society. There was only one meeting in the Michaelmas Term and that was ill-attended. In the Lent Term the Committee started an advertising campaign and the attendance at debates was trebled. Attendance remained high

as assistant producer. Four performances were given from 14 to 16 June 1949. The weather was reasonably kind; save on one occasion, when the cast was considerably encouraged by an audience which bravely ignored the rain and stayed on until the end of the play.

The Cambridge Theatre Group Revue in the Easter Term (Hey Nonny No), with lyrics by A. J. Bristow and music by Dr Beament, incorporated several items from the Bats Lent Term Revue (Now we are Eight) and several members of the Bats took part in it.

THE WAR MEMO RIAL

Donations have not come in as well as we had hoped, though the scheme for the conversion of the Old Chapel into a War Memorial Library has had wide approval. We shall be glad to receive further donations. In particular, we draw attention again to the benefits of subscribing under seven-year covenant, by which the College receives not only the subscription but also the income tax on that amount. As the table below shows, we have already received nearly £'100 in reclaimed tax by this means.

The state of the fund at the time of going to press 1s as . follows :

From 755 subscribers From 66 covenants .. . From the Club (further £200 to come) From Chapel collections From tax reclaims

£ 3181 301 600 198 93

£4373

When allowance is made for future subscriptions under covenant and tax reclaims, this means that we are rather under half-way towards the total.

Future Arrangements

There was a considerable amount of informal discussion at the Club Dinner in Jtme about the effect of the October Dinners. They have, without doubt, been greatly appreciated, but many members have stressed the sense of incompleteness which arises in June when a whole section of years is not represented. To avoid this, the Governing Body has decided to discontinue the special October Dinners, but to arrange for a marquee to be erected in June. All members of the Club (and therefore of the College, since membership is open to all) who wish to be present can then sit down together. The new proposal will be put into effect this year.
