Introduction
The University Library holds a significant proportion of the Queens’ College archives. These records,
on deposit at the University Library since 1968, chiefly relate to the College’s foundation, estates and
household. The records include charters, statutes, deeds of title, estate papers, annual accounts,
buttery books and court books. There are no student records.
The Queens’ College archives held at the University Library are not catalogued. The following list is
an attempt to bring together the various summary descriptions, some of which were inherited from
John Foster Williams, archivist at Queens’ until 1949, and some of which reflect the work of Dorothy
Owen, Keeper of the University Archives. This new, single list incorporates descriptions of the
following records:
- Queens’ College books (numbered 1-99, with gaps, as referenced in John Twigg’s A history of
Queens’ College, Cambridge, 1448-1986);
- Queens’ College boxes (numbered 1-157), listed by Dorothy Owen and her predecessors at
the University Library;
- Over 700 previously unlisted volumes, including buttery books, bursar’s accounts and court
books. Many of these volumes had been assigned a simple running number by Dorothy
Owen;
- Assorted uncatalogued rolls, maps, plans and other oversize material.
In compiling this list, to aid browsing by readers, the archival descriptions have been arranged
intellectually by function: foundation and governance; academic and tutorial; administration;
external relations; asset management. An additional section is included for secondary material not
obviously relating to the College’s primary functions. Of these functions, asset management is by far
the most extensive; this has been further sub-divided into household management and estate
management.
The following sets of classmarks are used in the list:
- QC Box 1-157: comprising mostly deeds and estate papers, but also occasional volumes and
other papers.
- QC 1-1003: comprising a large series of volumes as well as rolls, charters and oversize
material.
- A small number of the original, idiosyncratic classmarks have been retained.
The numbering sequence does not reflect archival order or hierarchical relationships. The classmark
to order material for consultation in the Manuscripts Reading Room is indicated in blue font.
This list is not an archive catalogue. The material has not been examined in any great detail. A large
number of the boxes have only approximate covering dates and rough descriptions of content. There
has been no comparative analysis of, for example, the various large series of accounting records.

Queens’ College itself retains a quantity of relatively modern material including Conclusion Books
(from 1734), College reports, governing body minutes, tutors’ books, records of College clubs and
societies, and personal papers of former members. Dr David Butterfield is Fellow Archivist at
Queens’: [email protected].

Classmark Description Date Former classmark Comprise a record of bursar’s bills (sums paid out on a quarterly basis) and often includes, as loose inserts, a summary of rental [College chamber rents] for each quarter for Masters, fellows and their tenants. These appear to represent the working papers of the bursar, perhaps in preparation for drawing up the formal bursar’s accounts. Other loose inserts include cook’s bills, butler’s bills and records of sedges, sheaves and sacks of coal. The volumes are in poor condition, with many loose insertions.

Bursar’s memorandum books [dividend books] A series of volumes similar in form and content, labelled by Dorothy Owen as ‘dividend books’. This series appears to be a form of memorandum book; the bursar’s record of money paid out on a monthly basis, including named accounts of fellows and College officers such as the cook and butler. Later volumes (1799-1800 onwards) provide a list of resident fellows followed by named accounts (Officers and fellows).

Buttery books This is not a complete series; there are gaps in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Accurate dating of volumes pre c. 1670 is difficult. The pre-1700 volumes are in especially poor condition, with a combination of mould, insect and water damage. These volumes are unfit for production.
