All Signs Point to Accelerated Dairy Herd Expansion. After years of heavy culling, milk herds arein great shape, but a tighter-than-normal heifer supply is constricting fast growth. All signs point toaccelerated expansion in the dairy herd despite a tighter-than-normal heifer supply. As of July 1, 3.9 million hei fers were available to enter the U.S. milk herd, according to USDA’ssemi-annual Cattle report released late last week. Excluding missing 2013 data, which was notreleased due to last year’s sequester, heifer supplies have fallen to six-year lows, while milk cowinventories are now at a six-year high at 9.27 mil lion head, up 68,000 head since bottoming out inNovember 2013, according to USDA data."After years of heavy culling, milk herds are in great shape, but heifer supplies are not large enoughto allow producers to expand as quickly as theywould like," says Sarina Sharp, agriculturaleconomist with the Daily Dairy Report,Chicago, Ill.The number of heifers available forreplacement will gradually increase movingforward, but demand for heifers will remain

high. Holstein springers last week were bringingbetween $2,000 and $2,950/head at a livestockauction in Turlock, Calif. "Producers arecompeting fiercely for heifers, so prices willremain high," says Sharp. "It is clear that dairyfarm profit margins are high everywhere, and producers are either trying to expand or are payingdown debt, with the latter part icularly true in the West."Last year, weak dairy farm margins and strong beef prices caused a steady flow of young heifersto feedlots. "Many dairy heifers went to slaughter without ever producing a drop of milk," notesSharp. "Last year’s slaughter of heifers contributed to today’s diminished supply, but the reductionis only temporary, because the economic incentive to sell heifers to the beef industry dried up nearthe end of last year."Today producers are likely culling their heaviest, low-production cows when they bring heifers intothe herd. Heavy cull cows are currently bringing around $1,600, about $600 short of the cost of anew, quality heifer, according to Sharp’s calculations using U.S. national average prices. Bycomparison, producers probably spent about $1,000 or more net of their beef-cull revenue to purchasea heifer in 2008, when dairy exports were booming and beef prices were relatively low.According to last week’s Cattle report, the July 1 beef herd was the smallest since USDA begantracking it in 1973. Beef cattle inventories fell 3% below 2012 levels, beef cow inventories were3% lower, and beef heifer inventories dropped 2%."The beef industry has been decimated by years of high feed costs during the ethanol era followed

by more than three years of severe drought in the southern plains," says Sharp. "Beef supplies willonly get shorter as the industry tries to rebuild, because producers will have to hold heifers andcows back from slaughter in order to expand."Lower feed costs, an ongoing tight beef market, adequate hei fer supplies, and high milk prices allpoint to strong dairy farm margins leading to accelerated expansion in the mi lk herd.Best to go cautiously, however, because the market can be volitile.

SIGNATURE SONGS IN SALEM FOR ONE WEEKENDWhen you hear “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” you think Tony Bennett. “People who needpeople are the luckiest people in the world,” and it’s Barbra Streisand. “My Way:” Frank Sinatra’sway. Those are Signature Songs, the songs that made famous singers famous. Those signature songs, and many more, will fill the Mainstage at Fort Salem Theater for one weekend only, August 15-17, Friday and Saturday at 8 PM and Sunday at 2 PM.The aforementioned great singers unavailable to sing their songs at Fort Salem’s audience-friendlyticket prices, with group and senior discounts to boot, the Fort’s artistic director, Jay Kerr, has donethe near impossible: not by bringing back Sinatra from the Great Beyond, but by bringing former FortSalem mainstay Kathy Beaver back from retirement for her first Mainstage performance in Salemsince 2006. Beaver is joined by Broadway stalwart Bill Carmichael, whose credits include Cats, LesMisérables, Forbidden Broadway, and Peter Pan. Rounding out the ensemble in the spirited musicalrevue are teen Saratogians Brendan Dailey and Carolyn Shields, last seen in Salem costarring in NoBoundaries with Jessica Layton and Benita Zahn, and Fort Salem’s mom-and-pop singer/producers,Lynne and Jay Kerr.Brendan Dailey and Carolyn Shields salute the teen idols of the sixties, Dailey singing “Venus” andShields topping Lesley Gore with her rendition of “It’s My Party.” They duet with a medley of “Closeto You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Lynne Kerr gives elegant readings of Judy Collins’ “Send inthe Clowns” and Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.”If the goal of Signature Songs: Songs That Made Famous Singers Famous is to outdo the original

artists, it is an ambitious one. That said, the revue promises to bring back the wonderful memories of the fifties and all the decades beyond, with some of the Fort’s favorite performers and Kathy Beaver’striumphant return. More information, including ticket prices, is available on the Fort’s website(fortsalemtheater.com) or by calling the box office at (518) 854-9200.
