Project title Recognition Plaque for Bribie Island and Local servicemen who served WW1 and WW2.

Project description There are three persons identified as residing Bribie Island or nearby on WW1 Nominal Roll and there are 10 who are recorded "Residential Locality on Enlistment = Bribie Island QLD", 6 from Toorbul and 4 from Donnybrook in WW2.

There is little recognition given to these servicemen and women from Bribie Island and close by and this project will remember them.

We will need to get high-resolution copies of all service records of people listed from the Australian War Memorial and the National Archives of Australia.

We will then list the names on a bronze plaque (A3 size) showing Name, Service Number, Service (1 x RAAF) and the Bribie Island address given on enlistment, if they returned and the part of the service they served.

Organisation name Lions Club of Moore Park Beach

Project title Moore Park Beach Anzac Memorial Refurbishment

Project description Our Anzac memorial is a well-loved, respected and well-utilised community asset, constructed in 1990 by volunteers. Over the last 23 years, the memorial walls have deteriorated and are a potential hazard. The memorial is dated, lacks a focal point and cannot cater for the increased support from the community for events such as Anzac Day, Armistice Day, Vietnam Veterans Day etc.

Our project will revamp the gardens for the Anzac Centenary. We will replace the existing brick walls with rock walls, provide new commemorative name plates and plaques, stone benches for quiet contemplation, flagpole, extensive landscaping and a 1.8m bronze statue of an Anzac soldier.

The project has many community benefits. Many veterans and other memorial attendees are aged with some infirmity. The memorial gardens will be more accessible, safer and will allow marquees to be erected for shade and seating.

The community will have a memorial that is safe, accessible and functional for the ever-increasing crowds attending memorial days such as Anzac Day.

Organisation name St Augustine's War Memorial Church

Project title St Augustine's War Memorial Church Hamilton - Completion of the Eastern Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows

Project description St Augustine’s War Memorial Church was built and dedicated as a thanksgiving for victory and a monument for fallen soldiers in the Great War. After WW2, the Church organ was dedicated to Royal Australian Navy and Merchant Marine personal who perished. In 1964 a Memorial Bell Tower was constructed and dedicated to the Royal Australian Air Force fallen.

In 1925 the Church ordered war memorial stained glass windows to be installed in the Sanctuary as a mark of thanksgiving and reconciliation. These windows were manufactured in Germany. When the local and national community became aware of this, serious objections were raised and the order was cancelled.

The Sanctuary East Window remains as opaque glass. All other Church windows were filled with stained glass in the subsequent decades.

This proposal seeks funding to complete the final (and first) window of St Augustine’s and will reflect the century of service and sacrifice.

Project title Buderim Anzac Day Services and Anzac Centenary Tree

Project description This project was initiated by Buderim War Memorial Community Association (BWMCA) Anzac Day sub-committee. To commemorate the Anzac Centenary, the committee approached council to host the dawn service in Buderim Village Park, which is located adjacent to the BWMCA hall.

The committee wishes to utilise the park’s new village green for the 2015 service and ongoing years, as they have outgrown their existing facilities. The park will accommodate the large crowd and create a new dawn service experience for the community.

The project comprises planting an Aleppo Pine, a decedent of the Gallipoli Lone Pine, at the new service location. The Lone Pine planting will present an enduring, tangible link to Anzac Cove, while enhancing the ceremony by being a focal point and legacy of the centenary commemorations. The project will provide essential components, such as power connection and flag poles, in order for the commemorative event to take place.

Project title Embroidering History: A Community's Contribution to the Great War

Project description This project will produce a commemorative embroidery documenting a school community's experience between 1914 and 1919. Inspired by other commemorative embroideries such as the Bayeux Tapestry, the Overlord Embroidery, and the Parliament House Embroidery, this artwork will make use of the medium of textiles which have traditionally been used throughout history to commemorate important events.

The embroidery will measure 10 m x 70cm and will be divided into six panels, one for each year of the war and a panel for demobilisation in 1919. Each panel will incorporate images that communicate the story of the school's experience of war and the immediate aftermath. The experience of specific members of this community will be contextualised within the broader narrative of Queenslanders at war. It will be exhibited in a specially built case in a heritage listed building that houses the school museum and is accessible to the public.

Organisation name North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum Assn. Inc.

Project title Stradbroke 100: Remembering North Stradbroke Islanders Overseas and at Home During the First World War

Project description Stradbroke 100 will research the WWI history of North Stradbroke Island, both overseas and at home. At least 13 Islanders - Indigenous and non-Indigenous - went overseas to fight. Their war records will be thoroughly researched, their personal stories will be documented, and their family stories of recruitment, embarkation, war service, repatriation and resettlement will be explored.

The people living on North Stradbroke Island in the war years consisted of a significant population of Quandamooka people, some European pioneer families and the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum inmates and staff. The impact of the servicemen leaving a small, isolated and close knit community will be researched, and oral histories conducted to learn about the experience of living on North Stradbroke Island during the war years.

Outcomes for the Stradbroke 100 project will include creating an archive of historical material, the digitisation of "at-risk" material, an exhibition, a publication and the development of educational programs for visiting schools and groups. Stradbroke 100 content will be included in a Queensland Museum exhibition.

Project title We Answered the Call – Blackall and Tambo Commemorates their Hundred Years of Anzacs

Project description In 2015, three days of Anzac Centenary commemorative activites will be centred on Blackall and Tambo’s war memorial precincts. Blackall’s focus will be a 'pop-up' outdoor museum adjacent to Memorial Park, with heritage military vehicles, artefacts and a memorabilia display. In Tambo, the Anzac Day March and Service will be extended with military, horse and memorabilia displays.

To promote and extend the 'museum' and displays, reproductions of pre-war posters will be placed around town reflecting the 'excitement' of the pending war, supported by local media articles. Two days of small vignettes re-enacting aspects leading up to the war including enlistment; and reflections on the consequences of this sacrifice will prelude Anzac Day.

A precursory, collaborative research project between the RSL, historical/heritage groups, students of all schools and interested locals will underpin these activities and their promotion, providing stories, details, imagery and display items; whilst simultaneously growing community awareness, involvement and contributions.

Project title The Boys from Barambah: Cherbourg's ANZACS

Project description It is little-known fact that the streets of the Aboriginal town of Cherbourg are named after the local men who fought in the First World War. Twenty-nine men from Barambah, as the settlement was then called, enlisted to fight. Although the Defence Act, 1909 banned non-Europeans from serving, some men were deemed ‘white enough’ or recruiting officers turned a blind eye, so long as a man was willing to put his life on the line, as these men certainly were.

This project will uncover the hidden history of Queensland’s Black Diggers, ensuring their rightful place in the Anzac Centenary commemorations. The project will bring to light the men’s individual stories, with multiple outcomes: an exhibition at the Ration Shed Museum, a commemorative plaque, a family reunion, an educational publication for schools and an online film.

Project title Coominya Soldier Settler Commemoration

Project description Properties surrounding the Coominya township in the Brisbane River valley were subdivided into over 100 30-acre blocks and allocated to discharged servicemen from the British and Australian Armies following WW1. Legislation was passed in 1917 and the first recruits signed up in 1920. They were paid to clear the land and were provided with a house, ploughing equipment and fruit trees and grape vines. When the scheme closed in 1929, only 2 farms were still operating; all the other farmers had walked off or been allocated farms in other areas. This research project will seek to determine who were the ex-servicemen who came to Coominya, what was their war record, which block were they on, where did they go, do their descendents have any memorabilia and photographs of that era, can they be found and would they allow their name to be used on commemorative plaques on the properties and on an commemorative honour board?

Project description Tinana State School proposes to build a memorial wall to commemorate the service and sacrifice of men and women during WW1. Our memorial wall will be made of bricks inscribed with the names of past students who have fought and/or died for our country in WW1. A Lone Pine sapling will be sourced from a descendent tree through our local Legacy office and a WWI timeline will be added to the wall. We will have a dedication to WW1 soldiers in the form of a brass plaque and a rising sun emblem. We feel that having a permanent reminder will personally connect the school community with the past students who fought for their country. With this, they will have a better understanding of the significance of WW1 in Australian history. Project description The proposed project involves research into 25 soldiers on a WW1 honour roll to develop a profile on each of the diggers. From the research we hope to discover photos relating to the soldiers and uncover some interesting facts about the battles they encountered and develop this into story form. From the imagery we will create life size cut outs of the soldiers printed in black and white. Over the body of the soldiers, some of the highlights of the soldiers' careers indicating significant battles and medals will be printed. These will be mounted outdoors in the grounds of the Julia Creek RSL in a memorial walk. We will put together a framed profile to display inside the RSL and also at the McKinlay Centenary Museum, where the original honour roll will be hung. To our knowledge there is no acknowledgement of these soldiers on any public war memorials.

Project title Toowoomba Mothers Memorial Centenary Wall

Project description The Centenary (of Anzac) Wall is proposed to hold all future plaques required to be placed in the Mothers Memorial Gardens precinct. It was relocated to its current location in 1985.

The intent of this new wall is to ensure that the Mothers Memorial remains the dominant memorial in this war memorial precinct, by providing a location for new plaques.
