TIME LINE Q.C.U.& S.A. FROM PRE 69/70 TO 2018/19

1956/57 to 1969/70

Called QCA Umpires Body after earlier Umpires Association was disbanded because of a “strike” in the early 50’s. Few facts are known about the Association during this time. The Umpires’ Body was under the control of Mr. A.E. Wyeth who was a member of the Q.C.A.Executive and was referred to as Umpires’ Liaison Officer. He had complete control. Lou Rowan was invited on numerous occasions by members of the Q.C.A. Executive to form an Umpires’ Association. John Mc Knoulty drew up a constitution which was adopted at a public meeting of Q.C.A. Umpires. Mr. Wyeth opposed this Association and vehemently fought against it and refused to allow discussion of the Association at a Q.C.A. meeting. Many friendships and relations with Q.C.A. were put under severe pressure.

1970/71 As in 69/70, elections were held to elect all positions including delegate to Q.C.A., Exam Board and Coach. These would gradually change to appointed positions. Player behaviour had become a real concern with Q.C.A. & Q.C.A.U.A. working together to try to stop the mis-conduct. Players such as Chappell, McLean, Seib, Thompson & Dymock helped in creating situations at a “Field Day” at Souths. Tom Vievers became Q.C.A. secretary. *New *After discussions with Q.C.A. 1982/83 will be the last year of allocations done by QCA via club stalwarts, e.g. Messrs Harris, Fox, Littledyke. From the 83/84 season an allocation panel made up of our own umpires both practising and retired will appoint umpires to Grade games. A Seminar was held at the Gabba featuring speakers such as Greg Chappell, Col Hoy, Bob Spence (scoring) and Peter Dornan (physio). Disappointingly, only 23 people turned up over the 2 days. F.A.C.U. meeting in Launceston sounded the death knell of the organization for the time being. Our Association started providing umpires for Junior Cricket, Schools & Womens Cricket. A video, with finance coming from an Art Union was seriously considered. The Annual Dinner was held at Brentleigh’s Theatre Restaurant. Raffles at monthly meetings continued to bring in much needed finance. Qld Cricket Association granted money for recruitment seminars Bank Balance: $731

1st Grade Final: P. Parker, C. Timmins Our name was changed to the Q’ld Cricket Umpires’ Association and there was significant amendments to the Constitution. We are now responsible to communicate to Umpires’ and Cricket Associations throughout the state. In the first year, 16 Umpire or Cricket Associations corresponded with us. Celebrate our 20th year with a dinner at Q’ld Cricketers’ Club. 80 people attended. A weekend seminar was held in August 1989 in Maryborough for any umpires throughout Q’ld. (Q.C.A. assisted with $500) Q.C.U.A. Honour Board was unveiled. All members received a Ground Directory. Mr. Alan Pettigrew, the new QCA Chairman attended 2 of our meetings and agreed to Association having a member on the Brisbane Grade Committee. Approval was given for members to purchase a maroon dress blazer. 100 Game Badge was struck. Umpires allowances increased to $32 per game with a partner and $35 alone. Mel Johnson announced his retirement from all levels of umpiring.

Lapel pins were made mainly for umpiring bodies throughout Q’ld. A proposal for an Umpires’ Retirement Fund was submitted to the QCA. The Bob Spence Medal rules were amended so that umpires needed to be available on more Sundays to gain maximum points. All umpires now must have a Blue Card to be appointed to games. The executive donated $1000 to the Tsunami Appeal. First grade badges made available to members who have stood in at least 25 First Grade games. All new umpires to be accredited.
