Music is something fundamental to the human experience; it speaks directly to our very being without the need for translation, without regard for age, gender, race or status – music can just ‘move’ you.

This year Queensland Music Festival has more ways than ever to get you moving to the music, with everything from opera to pop, country to jazz, Persian to rock and duets to symphony orchestra. You can join in playing Afro-Brazilian drums or make history as part of the World’s Biggest Orchestra. You can hear Australian debuts and world premieres, sit on the grass at Brisbane’s Riverstage or attend a black-tie dinner in Birdsville. How about taking a Soundbath provided by Tibetan bowls, or singing along to your favourite Bee Gees hits? It’s that diverse. In fact, if you have a musical bone in your body (and everyone does) then July 2013 is going to have that bone singing in harmony with the entire state of Queensland.

A state-wide festival is also the chance for people to connect in ways that are only possible through music and a number of events see communities come together in celebration to tell their story. The Yarrabah Band Festival hosts young Indigenous musicians from across Cape York, while Tambo celebrates 150 years and Gladstone stages the epic Boomtown.

Being a musician is a privilege and I’m very focused on having everybody share the experience, so you’ll find a number of ways to ‘be in it’ in this year’s program. I urge you to get out there and hear everything you can, join in whenever you can and energise your life (and those around you) with music!

FROM THE FESTIVAL CHAIRFROM THE MINISTER FOR THE ARTS

The 2013 Queensland Music Festival is a wonderful opportunity for music-lovers across the state to celebrate and enjoy a vibrant and diverse program.

Led by Artistic Director James Morrison, the Queensland Music Festival will work with communities large and small to make the joy of music accessible to all. For 17 days, the Queensland Music Festival will create unique experiences that connect people with place and community, and celebrate the richness and variety of Queensland.

This year, the Queensland Music Festival brings nationally renowned performers to cities and remote communities alike. We will see a home-town tribute to the Bee Gees at Brisbane Riverstage and large community events with locals performing alongside professional artists. For the World’s Biggest Orchestra, thousands of people will come together in a record-breaking attempt to make musical history.

These events all contribute to the enormous power the Queensland Music Festival will generate across our state in July.

As part of the Newman Government’s Arts for all Queenslanders commitment, the Queensland Government supports Queensland Music Festival to deliver more great arts and culture for more Queenslanders.

THE HONOURABLE IAN WALKER MPMINISTER FOR SCIENCE, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION AND THE ARTS

Queensland Music Festival 2013 is my second Festival as Chair, and I am extremely pleased to see the growth in the program and support for our organisation since 2011. James Morrison’s artistic directorship has seen a substantial increase in participation opportunities in the Festival, with programs across Queensland that feature significant community involvement alongside internationally acclaimed musicians.

The geographic reach of this year’s Festival will include 36 communities, taking in locations as diverse as Birdsville, Normanton, Goondiwindi and Yarrabah. Regions hosting major regional events with large-scale community participation include the iconic Boomtown project in Gladstone, the largest regional event in our history, as well as Heart of an Open Country which is taking place as part of Tambo’s sesquicentennial celebrations. QMF is also proud to be part of Mount Isa’s 90th birthday, with Swingin’ Utes joining their celebrations.

Similarly the Brisbane program brings together the best of international talent and large-scale participation opportunities. From fully-staged concert events and world premiere performances, to the ambitious GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ challenge of the World’s Biggest Orchestra, audiences will have the opportunity to hear music from all corners of the world, in what will be truly our most diverse and accessible festival program ever.

Our commitment to making musical excellence accessible to all Queenslanders could not be accomplished without significant partnerships. Queensland Government provides critical core funding support for the organisation, which allows us to plan effectively and with certainty. Still we must raise nearly half of our budget through other sources, including local government partnerships, corporate partnerships, project funding and philanthropic support. We are extremely grateful to each of our partners for their support, and for their belief in our vision to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences.

KATE FARRARCHAIR / QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL

Our vision is to transform lives through unforgettable musical experiences. Over 17 days in July 2013, the best of local, national and international talent brings every conceivable style of music to Queenslanders from all walks of life, in Brisbane and in 35 regional and remote centres. Many events are free, and more events than ever feature large-scale collaborative community engagement, creating works that truly reflect the life of our diverse and vibrant state.

Increasingly QMF projects take place over months or even years, as is highlighted by some of our regional community projects including Boomtown in Gladstone, Heart of an Open Country in Tambo, Swingin’ Utes in Mount Isa and Roma, and the inaugural Yarrabah Band Festival. Each of these events is the result of extended periods of consultation, creative development and skills development through work with professional artists. Elsewhere two significant regional tours – Tedeschi and Cooper

and Piano Lessons – bring internationally renowned artists to audiences in communities such as Birdsville, Normanton, Goondiwindi and Cunnamulla.

Opera at Jimbour reaches new heights through a partnership with Opera Queensland and Camerata of St John’s, performing an all-Verdi program. Elsewhere in Queensland songs of a different kind fill the air, with free community concerts in Moranbah and Emerald by Paris-based Australian songstress Tina Arena in concert with Queensland Youth Orchestra.

For the first time our Brisbane program also features large-scale community participation, with World’s Biggest Orchestra providing an opportunity for one and all to be a part of QMF, as part of a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM challenge.

The world premiere of a spectacular double concerto by Australian

composer Matthew Dewey is presented as part of Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Maestro Series, while international artists and musical styles grace the stages of Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane Powerhouse, with performances by vocal ensemble Take 6, the inimitable Brodsky Quartet and an absolute feast of music as the international language presented in the Esperanto program.

Once again, our signature Brisbane event is at Riverstage; How Deep Is Your Love is a tribute to the prolific songwriting career of Queensland’s legendary Gibb Brothers, performed by an amazing line-up of top Australian artists.

QMF 2013 brings the best of international and home-grown music to your doorstep. With more than 40 events to choose from and performances spanning the state, there are more ways than ever to find your transformational musical experience.

There’ll be no mistaking the start of the Festival as more than 1,200 trumpeters gather at King George Square for the formation of the Largest Trumpet Ensemble. They’ll be led pied piper-style through the streets of Brisbane – what a fantastic commotion they’ll make – marching up Queen Street Mall before travelling to Suncorp Stadium, where thousands more musicians await them to form the World’s Biggest Orchestra.

There are easy parts and more challenging parts written for each instrument, so whether you’re a beginner, accomplished soloist, or even someone who hasn’t played for years – start practising to make musical history.

And remember, even if you don’t play you can still participate. After all, every orchestra needs an audience. Come early and stay on afterwards to enjoy some of the best musical entertainment brought to you by Queensland Music Festival.

QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL, BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL, NETWORK TEN AND THE COURIER-MAIL & THE SUNDAY MAIL PRESENT

OVER TWO GRAND EVENINGS, AUSTRALIA’S FINEST SINGERS AND MUSICIANS WILL GATHER TO CELEBRATE AN EXTRAORDINARY SONGBOOK.

More than a tribute concert, How Deep Is Your Love is a soulful homage to the Gibb brothers, whose vision and versatility transcends the ordinary and whose talents contributed to a musical legacy unparalleled in the history of pop.

From humble beginnings in Queensland, singing between races from the back of a flat-bed truck at Redcliffe Speedway, the Bee Gees went on to pen an astonishing 970 songs, selling over 220 million albums.

Embracing everything from blue-eyed soul to country blues, R&B to disco, the Gibbs also wrote chart-topping albums for Diana Ross,

Barbra Streisand and Kenny Rogers. They have been covered by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Nina Simone and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Hear Australia’s finest singers perform their versions of To Love Somebody, Stayin’ Alive, Words, Islands in the Stream and other Gibb Brothers classics spanning four decades, backed by the Deep Love Orchestra.

Truly a rare moment in Australian music history, How Deep is Your Love is an unforgettable one-off salute to one of the world’s most successful songwriting partnerships.

BOOMTOWN

QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL AND GLADSTONE REGIONAL COUNCIL IN ASSOCIATION WITH QUT CREATIVE INDUSTRIES FACULTY PRESENT

GLADSTONE GOES LARGE WITH BOOMTOWN – A PRODUCTION SO EPIC, NO MERE STAGE CAN HOLD IT.

Gladstone is a proud boom town and its people love to share stories of the good and the bad that have come with these waves of settlement over the past 50 years. Of course, there is no better way to tell a community story than through a community musical; but Boomtown is no ordinary musical.

The largest QMF project to date, this is a musical theatre production on a scale you’ve never, ever seen before. With an original commissioned script and score and with a 300 strong cast – all from Gladstone – the spectacle that is Boomtown engulfs the entire Gladstone Marina foreshore

with the waterways and Spinnaker Park as the dramatic and inspiring backdrop. Told through a young boy’s eyes, Boomtown is a fantastical journey through Gladstone’s past, present and future to its true heart.

An incredible industrial set, a massive fire-breathing dragon, ethereal floating sculptures and a rather large number of Hi-Viz Zombies. With four astounding performances, these creations – forged in steel and sweat and light and spirit – provide the exquisite framework upon which the people of Gladstone share what it means to them to be a community.

This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and from the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gladstone Regional Council to support local arts and culture.

This event is part of the Rise and Shine Queensland tour visiting regions affected by severe weather events earlier this year. An initiative of the Queensland Government and Queensland Music Festival.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Queensland Music Festival would like to acknowledge the generous assistance of Gladstone Ports Corporation.

BRINGING THE WORLD TOGETHER ONE SONG, NOTE, VOICE AND DRUMBEAT AT A TIME.In this world of ours, full of conflict and difference, there is an intriguing idea that resurfaces again and again. If only we could all find a commonality, the entire world and its different cultures, religions and ideologies could be brought together.

In 1887, Ludwig Zamenhof came up with what he thought was the solution; an international language – Esperanto – for everyone to speak. One language. One world. But his beautiful idea never came to pass. If only he’d looked to the piano, the violin or to song for inspiration, he would have discovered an international language already existed, one that crosses cultural and emotional boundaries effortlessly. That language is music.

James Morrison has curated a program that embodies the spirit of Esperanto, filling every crevice of Brisbane

Powerhouse with music from a variety of cultures. Experience an array of genres including Australian Indigenous, Brazilian, Indonesian, Maori, gypsy, R&B, flamenco, pop, bluegrass, jazz and more.

Esperanto is a truly immersive cultural experience across multiple venues, genres and cultures. Come along and learn the one and only truly international language.

Barefoot Divas: Walk a Mile in My Shoes is a stunning tribute to female creativity, cultural diversity, endurance and life affirmation. Strengthened by deep connections to their land and indigenous cultures, this powerhouse combination of six extraordinary women celebrates honour, identity, joy and pain, love and hope through song, language and story.

Award-winning singer-songwriter, Kate Miller-Heidke and her long-time collaborator Keir Nuttall, join award-winning Brisbane musical genius and multi-instrumentalist, John Rodgers, in this striking exploration of the fluidity of music.

This show plays with music, combining the vocal power and sheer talent we expect from Miller-Heidke with the virtuosic diversity of Rodgers. Showing both artists in a new light, John re-arranges Kate’s original and popular material as well as a selection of cover versions from their favourite artists.

As well as releasing her latest album Nightflight in 2012, Kate’s extraordinary vocals and piano have recently seen her performing at Coachella, with the English National Opera and international tours with Ben Folds Five, stunning audiences worldwide with her gloriously elastic performances that glide effortlessly from angelic whisper to operatic passion, soaring from melancholia to joy in a single song.

MUSICAL MINDS CELEBRATE THE JOY OF CREATING AND RECREATING MUSIC.

In turn, John has created works across numerous mediums and genres that have been performed around the country and worldwide. From festival shows (Sydney Festival/ Vienna Festival/ Bogota) to theatre – Hamlet (Belvoir St) and Exit the King (starring Geoffrey Rush) – orchestras to cult bands (Madam Bones Brothel), Rodgers has his talented fingers in many musical pies. His ability and diversity are limitless, making him a perfect pairing for Miller-Heidke.

A show in which expectations are surpassed as musical curiosity collides with an abundance of talent and an innate sense of fun.

HEART & CRAFT: KATE MILLER-HEIDKE & JOHN RODGERS

Multi-instrumentalist, world class performer and Artistic Director of Queensland Music Festival, James Morrison, can do anything he likes musically with the festival – as the spectacular, genre-busting program shows. So what would you expect him to do on the last night? With whom would he choose to play? Where would the music go?

The Meeting is a convergence of three outstanding artists each with a

FEATURING JAMES MORRISON, DARREN PERCIVALANDDAVID JONES

distinctive voice in the world of music and with something unique to share.

Master percussionist, David Jones, brings a bubbling well of creativity to The Meeting; an unsurpassed energy and humour woven through the diverse rhythms of Japan, Brazil, India, jazz, funk and more.

Darren Percival may be known as the tall, suave singer from hit TV show, The Voice, but he doesn’t just sing. Darren

creates moving soundscapes and primal grooves that remind audiences and fellow musicians that music is a direct expression of the soul.

So, what happens when you bring together three such forces? That’s what James wants to know too. Don’t miss this melding of musical genius – an exceptional finale to QMF 2013.

With eclectic instruments including the kamanche tarhu, the kaval, the ney and the darabuka, combined with the more familiar violin, guitar, double bass and accordion, Mzaza uses driving gypsy rhythms, multiple languages

Tambo: Heart of an Open Country is the result of hours of generous story sharing between Tambo residents, both past and present, Queensland Music Festival and writers Michael and Margery Forde.

Stories of their lives, of a town, of a past and a future are beautifully reflected in this world premiere musical theatre production, which brings to life the characters, the adventures, the hardships and most of all the heart of a remarkable western Queensland town.

Directed by Michael Forde with a band led by Music Director, Shenzo, the musical heartbeat of Tambo: Heart of an Open Country is provided by country

music legend, Graeme Connors. His deep, rich body of work is the perfect vehicle to carry the narrative of the past 150 years of Tambo. But the real star of the show is the community itself.

Performing alongside professional musicians and actors over two magnificent nights, the people of Tambo, adults and school children alike, come together with one heartfelt commonality – to honour their town.

The Tambo: Heart of an Open Country celebration is part of T-150 A Week in the West.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Music Festival have jointly commissioned Australian composer Matthew Dewey to write a double concerto for Morrison (trumpet) and Bliss (clarinet).

With his fresh musical voice Matthew Dewey has delighted audiences in both the United States and Russia. This concert premieres Dewey’s classical yet jazz-fired language; tailor-made for two extraordinary musicians.

Both Julian Bliss and James Morrison began their distinguished careers at a young age, and both have enjoyed unparalleled success on the international stage. Morrison is an exceptional and acclaimed multi-instrumentalist. Bliss is also

feted for his versatility and recently launched A Tribute to Benny Goodman celebrating the life of the ‘King of Swing’.

Dewey’s Double Concerto weaves their distinctive styles and sounds together, bringing the talents of these renowned musical giants together for the first time.

This exhilarating concert also features Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Ives’ rich Symphony No.2 infused with borrowed fragments from hymns, folk music, other composers’ repertoire and the pop songs of his day. These two pieces, combined with Dewey’s new work are an excellent fit in this adventurous and much anticipated concert.

Queensland Music Festival 2013 collaborates with OperaQ to make this imagined beauty a reality once again with festival favourite, Opera at Jimbour, where good food, wine and incredible song abound.

An iconic outdoor event attracting more than 8,000 music lovers, this stunning spectacle delights opera aficionados and opera first-timers alike.

TEDESCHI & COOPER: CLASSICS, GYPSY AND JAZZWHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU SEND TWO VIRTUOSIC MUSICIANS ON A WHIRLWIND TOUR ACROSS QUEENSLAND IN A LIGHT PLANE, ARMED WITH ONLY A KEYBOARD, A FIDDLE AND A SENSE OF HUMOUR? TEDESCHI & COOPER, THAT’S WHAT!

Simon Tedeschi (piano) and Ian Cooper (violin) are two of the finest classical musicians Australia has to offer. They’ve played for presidents, queens and princesses and performed to audiences of thousands, from Paris to New York and London to Sydney.

They’ve been everywhere, man – but they haven’t been to Georgetown, Normanton, Mareeba, Winton, Birdsville, Quilpie, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Goondiwindi or Warwick.

That’s all about to change. The self-proclaimed city slickers paint a musical landscape that encompasses classics, country, jazz, gypsy, swing and blues.

Described by Artistic Director James Morrison as ‘mixing nitro with glycerine’, this is an aural explosion of the craziest and most brilliant kind.

Tedeschi & Cooper – it’s not just a concert, it’s an experience.

The Tedeschi & Cooper tour received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland’s Playing Queensland Fund – Boost to Touring, and the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Murweh Shire, Carpentaria Shire and Tablelands Regional Council to support local arts and culture. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL AND ARTOUR IN ASSOCIATION WITH QUEENSLAND PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE PRESENT

A MUSICAL MEMOIR OF PURE ENCHANTMENTConcert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir, Piano Lessons, comes to life once again after its world premiere at the 2011 Queensland Music Festival. Due to popular demand, this sublime piece of music-theatre is back in 2013 with a state-wide tour.

Goldsworthy’s award-winning book, which recounts her musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its release in 2009.

Goldsworthy herself stars in the stage adaptation alongside doyenne of the Australian stage and screen, Carol Burns. Like the book, the

production is an exquisite exploration of the intriguing relationship between the young pianist and her Russian teacher.

This charismatic enigma inspires and challenges her young pupil in equal measure as they work through a spellbinding selection of piano pieces, including pieces from Mozart, Liszt and Chopin.

Part concert and part theatrical production, Piano Lessons is a profound insight into the lives and inspirations of the great masters to expose the process of learning, interpreting and creating music.

Piano Lessons is published by Black Inc.Tour managed and coordinated by arTour, an initiative supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

In his Australian premiere tour, Romanian-born virtuoso Marian Petrescu unleashes his stunning pianistic brilliance in this definitive jazz performance.

The peerless Petrescu, who has been playing since the age of four, treats the piano as friend, sparring partner and lover. His eclectic and adventurous style combine with dazzling technique and dynamic interpretation, rich in imaginative nuances.

With a soul-deep affinity for Oscar Peterson (arguably the most loved and revered jazz pianist of the 20th century), Petrescu’s A Tribute to Oscar Peterson receives standing ovations around the globe.

Called ‘The Horowitz of Jazz Piano’ by French jazz great Martial Solal, Petrescu’s sound rings of Peterson reincarnated. His fingers fly over the keys with Peterson’s spellbinding fluidity and swing, yet Petrescu has a vivacity and brilliance that is all his own.

A festival exclusive not to be missed, Marian Petrescu plays alongside Artistic Director and multi-instrumentalist, James Morrison, who will also narrate this unforgettable performance.

BRODSKY QUARTET & TOPOLOGY: IL SOGNOTHE WORLD RENOWNED BRODSKY QUARTET CONTINUES THEIR COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH TOPOLOGY IN AN EXCLUSIVE BRISBANE PERFORMANCE.

Centred around Elvis Costello’s acclaimed ballet suite, Il Sogno (recreated as a chamber work for the two inimitable groups), this exhilarating evening also includes Elvis Costello songs and other original compositions, including Robert Davidson’s (Topology) unique ‘speech melody’ work, Three Men & a Blonde.

The Brodsky’s previous collaboration with Costello was a true meeting of musical minds where Costello famously laboured over mastering musical notation and the Brodskys found themselves in the wilds of improvisation – now

that fascinating experience leads to this, another equally unique and engaging pairing.

The Brodsky’s energy and musical curiosity, that has seen them perform more than 3000 concerts on the main stages of the world, is a perfect match for the distinctive and unique creative ethos of Brisbane’s very own Topology.

An exuberant celebration of musical virtuosity and imagination, Il Sogno blurs the lines of musical genre and melodic adventure. This is not a must see, but a ‘must experience’.

BRODSKY QUARTET:

THE SHOSTAKOVICH CYCLE

Shostakovich was a man completely and utterly emotionally connected to his music. The fifteen string quartets – collectively thought of as one of the great works of 20th century art – communicate his inner life as well as mirroring the highs and lows of life in Soviet Russia. The cycle reflects his stylistic evolution across the years – from youthful brash humour and experiment through introverted melancholy and nationalistic fervour to defiance and bleakness – a compelling life and death battle of ideas, truth, ideology and existence.

Experiencing them as a complete cycle gives the listener a profound insight into Shostakovich’s life.

The UK-based Brodsky Quartet is as flawless as it is engaging. With five achingly beautiful performances across three days in the intimate Visy Theatre, the Quartet brings Shostakovich’s intensely personal works to life in a manner unmatched by any other. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the entire string quartet cycle performed by the world’s best.

THE PRE-EMINENT INTERPRETERS OF SHOSTAKOVICH IN THE WORLD, THE BRODSKY QUARTET, PERFORMS THE ENTIRE CANON OF HIS STRING QUARTETS AS PART OF THIS YEAR’S QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL.

“THE BRODSKY QUARTET IS THE NO.1 INTERPRETER OF SHOSTAKOVICH IN THE WORLD TODAY.” Corriere della Sera

MANTRA

A MESMERISING PERFORMANCE THAT STRETCHES MUSICAL BOUNDARIES TO THEIR LIMITS.This is the first Queensland performance in almost 15 years of Stockhausen’s seminal work, Mantra. Performed by the piano duo of Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg, the program also includes a world premiere by Australian avant-garde composer, Matthew Hindson. Commissioned by the University of Queensland, the innovative new work is for two pianos and electronics and is inspired by glitch and 8-bit video game music.

Hindson is known for his use of popular idioms and radical ideas – a perfect companion for Stockhausen’s profoundly influential work.

Mantra is uniquely scored for two grand pianos electronically processed through ‘ring modulators,’ kaleidoscopically expanding the sound palette of the piano. The pianists are equipped with antique cymbals, wood blocks, and a transistor radio that at one point transforms cosmic static into Morse code and channels it into the fabric of the composition.

The award-winning Viney and Grinberg have performed worldwide and are renowned for their striking repertoire spanning classic two-piano literature, modern masterpieces and new works.

YARRABAH BAND FESTIVALWE’RE GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER!Yarrabah has a rich history of instrumental music with the first brass band being formed in 1901 and touring across the state, taking the sounds of Yarrabah far and wide.

That tradition has been dormant for more than 40 years… until now!

Yarrabah Band Festival sees not only the first performance of the newly-formed community band but also a coming together of Indigenous players from across

the region. Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy students from Aurukun, Coen and Hope Vale join local performers for an evening of music that heralds the return of Indigenous bands to northern Queensland.

As part of the celebrations, visiting musicians Darren Percival (The Voice), Thelma Plum (Deadly Award Winner) and the Morrison Brothers will take to the stage before an all-in, massed-band finale. The band is back!

SCORE IT!QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL AND BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL PRESENT

A FILM WITHOUT MUSIC IS LIKE A PUPPET WITHOUT STRINGS – IT IS UNLIKELY TO MOVE. Introducing Score IT! a film-scoring contest for emerging Queensland composers.

The musical score of a film is as integral to its emotional impact as the script, cinematography and even the actors themselves. So, for the fourth time, Queensland Music Festival has thrown down a challenge to young composers state-wide (from Years 8 -12) to create their original composition to accompany a short film. There are three categories – Score IT! Junior, Senior and Plus.

To enter Score IT! Junior and Senior, students create a musical recording using any instrumentation to accompany the film.

Score IT! Plus is a new category for age groups from Years 8 -12.This is a more challenging opportunity to compose for specified instruments and submit a written score.

Award-winning screen composer and orchestrator Cameron Patrick will be the judge of this new category.

Originally from Brisbane, he is now based in LA where he has worked on projects with DreamWorks, Warner Bros, Disney, Pixar and Paramount Pictures.

Score IT! encourages learning opportunities by linking the most outstanding entrants with industry professionals. In 2013 the contest will culminate with an awards ceremony, where the winning Score IT! Plus composition will be performed by students from the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium.

ENTRIES CLOSE FRIDAY 7 JUNE 2013. THE SCORE IT! 2013 COMPETITION WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ONLINE FRIDAY 26 JULY.VISIT QMF.ORG.AU FOR MORE DETAILS.

Adapted for the stage by Dan Evans with original music composed by award winning singer-songwriter Jake Diefenbach and directed by David Fenton, this combination of evocative narrative and stunning songs hearken back to the darkest roots of cabaret.

Under the banner For the Love of Singing, voice teachers of all styles and genres from more than 25 countries are gathering for the Eighth International Congress of Voice Teachers, held in Australia for the very first time. The program is overflowing with presentations by eminent international teachers and researchers, celebrating the art of vocal performance. Voice teachers can register to participate in the full four-day program or for one day only.

Everyone is welcome to attend a series of free concerts on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday featuring performers from Mexico, Spain, Singapore, America and Australia.

FEATURED FREE CONCERT: AILAN KORES

In a special Queensland Music Festival performance, Ailan Kores travels to Brisbane to perform their joyous and iconic devotional pieces for the opening of the International Congress of Voice Teachers.

Singers from six islands across the Torres Strait, the Ailan Kores, came together in 2011 to perform

an evening of sacred choral music. On Thursday Island Ailan Kores performed with the Queensland Youth Orchestra in a celebration of the unity and diversity of Torres Strait culture. The combined voices performed a program of local hymns startlingly transformed to express their tradition of exuberant music worship.

The works will be re-interpreted again by composer Damian Barbeler and Alison Rogers returns to conduct Ailan Kores. With songs chosen from the Eastern, Central and Western language groups the choral works reflect the Torres Strait’s cultural and linguistic distinctiveness.

QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL PRESENTS

STRADBROKE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALThe Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival is a series of six concerts held over three days, in the magnificent natural surroundings of North Stradbroke Island. The festival draws on Australian and international musicians to perform gems from the chamber music repertoire at intimate venues in the island’s townships.

This year, concert goers will enjoy an eclectic mix of music, including quartets with a gypsy touch, a cabaret-style evening, rarely performed versions of Strauss’s Metamorphosen for septet and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for sextet, along with a riotous family concert of animal-themed music. And they can delight in the natural splendour that the island has to offer – whale-watching, nature walks, endless beaches, freshwater lakes – and the succulent local seafood.

MADAME CARANDINI’S TRAVELLING MUSICAL CURIOSITY SHOW A STAGED CONCERT OF WORK-IN-DEVELOPMENT Secrets, lies and killer anthems.

Madame Carandini’s Travelling Musical Curiosity Show is inspired by the legend of explorer, Christie Palmerston. Known as a enigmatic anti-hero, his notorious legacy is a colourful embellishment between fact, legend and cultural extremes. The wilderness of North Queensland is enrolled as an unlikely backdrop to an innately Australian gothic tale, by Stephen Carleton.

This staged concert of Madame Carandini’s Travelling Musical Curiosity Show, currently a work-in-development at Metro Arts, features the original composition by John Rodgers, performed by acclaimed vocalists Sandro Colarelli and Geraldine Turner, and renowned musicians Mark Atkins, Sallie Campbell and John Rodgers. The concert weaves together the exotic sounds of such curious instruments as the bowed psaltery, nyckelharpa, glass harmonica and didgeridoo.

This project is part of the work-in-residence program at Metro Arts, and its creative development has been funded by the Australia Council, Arts Queensland and the Brisbane City Council.

Public events, such as Heart of an Open Country (Tambo), Boomtown (Gladstone) and the Yarrabah Band Festival are the culmination of many months of work with community members, who collaborate with QMF artists to build skills and create productions that reflect their unique identities, hopes and aspirations.

Music can be an effective vehicle for effecting positive change in individual lives and whole communities. These projects provide opportunities for skills development, strengthening social networks and telling stories that help to shape our identity and understand each other. Music helps us to celebrate who we are, as well as providing a safe ground for exploring stories that are difficult to tell.

Queensland is home to many diverse communities, and QMF seeks to engage with people from a wide range of geographic places and cultural backgrounds. We are extremely proud to have contributed to building community resilience in places affected by

floods and cyclones, as well as helping to address gaps in regional and remote education, through providing music education and participation opportunities in partnership with schools and communities across the state.

Cape York Instrumental Project is a great example of a program that aims to address educational disadvantage, providing Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy students in the remote communities of Aurukun, Hope Vale and Coen with a stage band program that is equivalent to those offered in metropolitan schools. In addition to providing professional development for teachers in remote communities, students received intensive training with one of Australia’s best instrumental teachers. More than 700 community members turned out to support the Aurukun group for their first ever end of year concert in December 2012, and in 2013 students from all three campuses have the opportunity to attend band camp for the first time, before performing as part of the Yarrabah Band Festival.

This Festival our choral work with Torres Strait Island communities culminates in a performance for The Eighth International Congress

of Voice Teachers (please see page 53), adding to national awards and extensive media coverage for Ailan Kores in recent years.

QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL’S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECTS ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR VISION TO TRANSFORM LIVES THROUGH UNFORGETTABLE MUSICAL EXPERIENCES.

In other community projects including Boomtown (Gladstone) and Heart of an Open Country (Tambo), participants of all ages have been training with leading musicians and theatre directors as they prepare to present their stories as part of QMF 2013. Yarrabah will present the inaugural Yarrabah Band Festival, where up and coming Indigenous musicians will play alongside talent including Thelma Plum, Darren Percival (The Voice) and James Morrison.

Queensland communities face a whole spectrum of issues including geographic isolation, socio-economic stress, racial tensions and lack of access to education opportunities. QMF projects help to

address disadvantages in its many forms, and we are grateful to our diverse partners who are committed to helping build community programs over the long term.

These include Arts Queensland, Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, John Villiers Trust, Perpetual Foundation, Australia Council for the Arts, Regional Arts Fund, Festivals Australia, Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, Link-Up Queensland, Gindaja Healing and Treatment Indigenous Corporation, Creative Recovery and the Regional Arts Development Fund. A number of generous individuals have contributed to our community programs through donations to the Transformations Fund, with special

thanks to Damian Bender whose donation provided instruments for the Yarrabah Band Program, the Golding Family, the Waterson Family and the Lloyd Family for their support of the Gladstone community project and QMF Board Chair, Kate Farrar. We are deeply grateful to each of our partners for their assistance and support.

We invite you to experience some of the amazing community outcomes through festival events this July.

If you are interested in supporting our community projects through the Transformations Fund, or would like to find out more about any of our initiatives, please contact Simon Buchanan on [email protected].

Formal evaluation over 2009 – 2012 has consistently demonstrated the value of our programs in delivering benefits.

Improved education outcomes for students experiencing disadvantage in regional and remote areas, including greater completion rates and increased likelihood to seek further education and training (Cape York Instrumental Project, Torres Strait Islands, Charleville, Tambo and Cooktown).

Strengthening of social cohesion through increased awareness and appreciation of diverse communities, and building a strong sense of community identity and pride (Bowen, Gladstone, Tambo, Cooktown/Hope Vale).

Stronger community networks that extend beyond arts and culture networks, with greater participation across all areas of community life (Song Trails communities 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, Charleville, Cooktown).

Increased regional profiles that contribute to greater opportunities in tourism and trade (Whitsundays, Torres Strait Islands).
