TRANSCRIPT
The annual Year 11 Prom
was held on 23rd June and
once again, it was an
amazing night. The theme
this year was "The Great
Gatsby", harking back to a
bygone, Golden Era of
glamour and fun.
Students looked amazing
and arrived in a variety of
very stylish modes of
transport.
Parents and staff have
long been an integral part
and great supporters of
the Prom and this year
was no different. A
fabulous number of
Queensmead parents
turned out to cheer the
students in and staff were
on hand to celebrate with
the students and
congratulate them on all
their hard work in the lead
up to exams and wish
them all the best for the
future, whatever their
chosen path.
A big thank you to
everyone who made the
night so special.
Mrs Gibbons
Assistant Head of Year 11
Year 11 Prom
On 24th May, sixty students
from Year 8 and 9 who had
displayed outstanding
behaviour and attitude to
learning were rewarded with a
trip to Laser Planet in
Watford.
Upon arrival the students
were split into teams of
fifteen, two from Year 8 and
two from Year 9. They then
received a full briefing from
the referees about the do’s
and don’ts when inside of the
arena.
Everyone was given a laser
gun and fitted with an LED
vest which would glow if they
had been hit. At the end of
each battle, the team with the
highest number of hits was
victorious.
The teams that were not in
combat refuelled on slush
puppies and hot dogs while
watching the action from the
arena on the many screens
dotted around the refuelling
station.
It was delightful to see the
students’ teamwork and
strategy skills being put to
excellent use, with
handshakes all round at the
end of each battle.

Assistant Head Year 9
Year 8 and 9 Rewards Trip
On the weekend of
Saturday 9th June,
Queensmead DofE
students travelled to Tring
to complete their assessed
qualifying expedition with
students from other
schools in the borough.
The challenge for the first
day was to navigate to the
Bridgewater Monument
and then back to camp,
which all groups completed
successfully.
The next task was to set
up camp, which is usually
straightforward, but
despite the sun students
battled against ferocious
winds to put their tents up.
All teams worked together
to take on the wind and set
up each other's tents and
after an hours collective
work, we had ten tents
standing and only one set
of broken poles!
After a hard day of
walking, team chefs took
to the Trangias to prepare
the evening meal. The
menu consisted of
Spaghetti Bolognese, Pasta
Neapolitan and Hotdogs.
With no mobile phones
allowed, due to the twenty
conditions of the Duke of
Edinburgh assessment,
students were left to
entertain themselves
without the use of
technology. Queensmead
students became trend
setters when they invented
a new sport, which they
named Volley Circle.
The students set a
campsite record of a score
of fifteen volleys and
remain the undefeated
champions of town farm
campsite.
As the sun set over camp,
tiredness from the days
trekking as well as the
intense Volley Circle
competition, started to
kick in and everyone
settled into their tents for
the night.
On day two timings were
key. The assessor chose to
focus on the route cards
and checkpoint locations.
Students had to ensure
they were at the
checkpoints along the
routes at the specific times
to ensure they passed the
expedition section.
With this in mind,
everyone quickly packed
up camp and set off at
8.30am after a hearty
breakfast of porridge and
cereal bars. They set off
along their routes
enthusiastically ready to
take on the seven hours of
walking they had ahead of
them out on the hills.
Along the routes students
also worked on a group
project, which they had to
present at the end of the
weekend, in order to pass
the expedition section.
This year teams projects
were very creative. From
creating a collage of the
Bridgewater monument to
making a horror movie
along the route.
First team back into camp
and to complete the
expedition was Andreya
Shehova (Leader) Karina
Jhuti, Kristina Morrison,
Medina Muhammad and
Mikayla Edwards.
They all worked
fantastically as a team,
showed grit and
determination and never
gave up.
All five teams met the
twenty expedition
conditions and the
assessor passed and
congratulated them all,
particularly for the high
levels of teamwork
demonstrated and the
creativeness of their
group projects.
Congratulations to all
students who took part, I
am extremely proud of
you all for your efforts
over the weekend and
hope to see lots of you
continue on and complete
the silver and gold
awards.

Sixty six Year 9 Geography
students went on a trip to
the Natural History
Museum on Friday 16th
June to explore our
Hazardous Earth. Students
have just recently finished
their first topic in GCSE
Geography on how
hazardous our planet can
be in relation to Volcanoes
and Earthquakes. This trip
was a fantastic opportunity
for students to expand
their knowledge and
understanding on this
topic.
Before entering the
museum we were able to
enter the Butterfly
Exhibition and were
amazed by how many
butterflies there were and
the different colours on
display. Some students
were overwhelmed by all
the butterflies making a
home on their heads which
forced a few not to last
inside the exhibit for very
long.
Inside the museum we
visited the newly designed
Volcanoes and
Earthquakes exhibit, where
students were able to
explore a range of
different information and
materials that are related
to GCSE Geography. We
were able to witness the
casts of the victims of the
Pompeii Volcano disaster
and see what
volcanologists wear when
they enter a volcano.
It was also great to see
students participate with
all the interactive
resources that the Museum
offers. They were amused
by the Kobe Earthquake
simulator, a case study we
have explored in Year 9.
Students were also given
the opportunity to explore
the other areas of the
Museum, including the
Dinosaur/Mammals exhibit
and the Solar Systems,
which is explored in Year
10/11 GCSE Geography.
Everyone was thrilled to
see the real life T-Rex.
Special thanks to
Miss Jupp, Miss Wilkinson
and Mrs Cusack for
attending the day and
ensuring the students had
an enjoyable Geography
trip.
Well done to the Year 9’s
on the day! All students
demonstrated a positive
attitude and behaviour and
made the day an
overwhelming success!

Jeudi le quinze juin, je suis
allée avec mes copains et mes
professeurs au Institut
Français pour regarder un film
qui s’appelait ‘Les Aventures
Extraordinaires d’Adèle
Blanc-Sec, et aussi, nous
avons fait des activités sur le
film. Nous sommes allés en
métro, il y avait beaucoup de
personnes et c’était un peu
difficile de ne pas se perdre,
heureusement, nos
professeurs étaient très
organisés.
Avant d’aller au ‘Ciné
Lumière’, qui est où on a vu le
film, nous avons fait les
activités et nous avons mangé
le déjeuner. Selon moi, je
pense que les activités
n’étaient pas trop difficiles et
elles étaient amusantes.
L’après-midi, on a vu le film, il
s’agit d’une jeune femme qui
s’appelle Adèle qui ne s’arrête
pas jusqu’à elle a sauvé sa
soeur Agathe. À mon avis, je
pense que mon personnage
préféré du film est
Espérandieu parce qu’il est
très intelligent et aussi
amusant.
En ce qui me concerne, je
pense que l’excursion à
l'Institut Français était
absolument incroyable et je
me suis beaucoup amusée.
On Thursday 15th June a few
students and teachers
travelled to the French
Institute to watch a film called
'The Adventures of Adèle
Blanc-Sec' and take part in
various activities related to
the film.
We went by tube and the
journey was very busy, I was
worried in case we got lost
but fortunately our teachers
were very organised.
When we arrived at the
Institute we did the activities
that had been set for us and
then had our lunch. The
activities were not too difficult
and they were fun.
After lunch we saw the film at
'Ciné Lumière'. The film was a
fantasy adventure set in the
early twentieth century about
a young woman named Adèle.
My favourite character from
Trip to the French Institute
the movie was Espérandie
because he was very smart
and great fun.
I think the trip to the French
Institute was absolutely
amazing, I had a wonderful
time and learnt a lot while I
was there.

Mathematics Challenge
A team of four enthusiastic
and able mathematicians
from Year 7 travelled to
Stockley Academy on
Thursday 29th June to take
part in the Hillingdon
Schools’ team maths
challenge. They had been
practising at lunchtimes
and afterschool and were
faced with a group round,
a cross number and a relay
round.
The team’s strongest
round was the
crossnumber in which they
scored in the twenties, but
unfortunately did not make
the top three. The team
tried very hard and
enjoyed themselves and
should be very proud of
what they achieved. We
hope they will continue to
enjoy solving maths
puzzles in future
competitions.
Thank you to Mrs Kaur and
Mr Hay who took the team
and helped with the
marking and scoring and a
huge well done to the team
who represented their
school in this way.

The Youth Travel
Ambassadors (YTA) joined
twelve other schools at the
London Transport Museum
in Covent Garden on
Thursday 22nd June to
celebrate our successes
and plan ahead for the
next academic year.
As we have had a
successful year winning
both the Modeshift Award
in November and
Excellence in Walking in
February, we were greeted
warmly by the staff of the
London Transport Museum
and YTA Coordinators from
five different London
Boroughs.
We started the day with a
small reception in the
theatre room, where we
were split into groups and
were introduced to the
other schools. Some of our
group then got up and
showcased our campaign
to other schools who then
had the opportunity to ask
questions and gain
inspiration from us.
We were then allocated to
the Pink group where we,
with our coordinator
Michael Kitchen, went
around the Museum,
piecing together the past,
present and future of
London’s transport
infrastructure.
We also had a cycling
competition where
students competed against
each other in a race. As
proof that our group was
amazing, the overall
winner was Nimpreet
Khaneja, who received a
voucher as a reward.
We then had a talk from
one worker at TFL who
spoke about his job with
the YTA and how this links
in with TFL and the Mayor
of London. An employee
who was part of a
graduate scheme also
came to talk to us about
how we could get involved
with a career in TFL and
about their Youth Panel.
At the end of the day I had
the opportunity, together
with a student of
Claremont High, to say a
few closing words about
my experiences in YTA for
the past three years.
I talked about all the
groups successes and how
we were not just a group
anymore, we were a
family. I received a
wonderful reception from
the other schools, which
made me feel proud to be
part of the group.
After our brilliant
performance as a team,
we were introduced to a
member of staff from
Cardinal Wiseman, who
discussed our previous
campaigns and invited us
to visit their school’s YTA
to support the newly
created team there.
I, on behalf of the team,
would like to thank
Mrs Oakley for giving us
space, time and support in
our campaigns.

This term has been very busy
for the gardening club by
making Queensmead bright
and colourful. The students
have had great feedback from
teachers all noticing the
colourful baskets and pots.
On Tuesday 11th July two
judges from Hillingdon council
visited Queensmead to judge
the pots and baskets for the
‘Hillingdon in bloom’
competition. Keep your
fingers crossed as this is the
first time we have entered the
competition.
The students deserve a big
thank you for all their time
and effort in making
Queensmead look colourful
and lovely. They have been
giving up their own time to
maintain the flowers by
coming into school earlier and
spending lunchtimes watering
them.
I wish them lots of luck with

The new mosaic artwork was
designed by Miss Brady for a
project brief which requested
a creative exterior visual and
the piece certainly exceeds.
69,500 mosaic individual tiles
were carefully hand placed to
create a stunning array of
colour and pattern.
Selected students from Year
8, 9 and 12 worked really
hard, alongside Miss Brady, in
the production of the design
over the course of several
weeks.
Each of the six sections
represents a subject and
illustrate a symbol of
relevance on the curriculum at

Over the course of the year,
our aim has been to train
every KS3 student at
Queensmead to be able to
administer CPR and use an
Automated External
Defibrillator (AE) in an
emergency situation. Thank
you to Sarah Walker-Smith, a
volunteer from Harrow Unit,
St John Ambulance, we have
succeeded in achieving that
goal and can now proudly
state that all 720 students in
Years 7-9 have received and
practiced this life saving
training.
Riding on the back of that
success, The Apprentice Club,
headed by Mrs Gibbons, were
offered the opportunity to
work towards their First Aid
certificate. Over the past five
weeks in addition to CPR, the
students have learnt:
How to make an
accident scene safe and
prioritise casualties
Treatment of an
unresponsive casualty
Treatment of bleeds,
burns, choking and
asthma
Treatment of Angina,
Heart Attack, fainting,
stings and sprains
Feedback from
Mrs Walker-Smith has been
overwhelmingly positive:
It has been fantastic to see
the students embracing this
practical training and learning
how a few simple techniques
can save someone’s life. It is
great that the school has an
AED (defibrillator) and giving
the students this training in
how to use it makes the
environment safer for
everyone and gives them an
important life skill.
Massive congratulations to all
students who undertook the
training. Special recognition

showed patience and
dedication in successfully
completing their First Aid
certificate.
