Barkerville Historic Town’s renowned Theatre Royal opens its 2014 season with a gala event and dance party on June 21.

The event begins with the annual general meeting of the Barkerville Heritage Trust at 11 a.m. and ends with a boot-stomping shindig from 9 p.m. onwards at the House Hotel Saloon.

Between 4 – 7 p.m., the cast and crew of Newman and Wright Theatre Company will manage to squeeze in the premieres of two brand-new musical shows, as well as raise some much-appreciated funds in a hilarious charity auction in support of their authentic theatrical endeavours.

“Rehearsals are over and once again they’ve been well worth the effort,” Theatre Royal producer Richard Wright said.

“We are very excited to present The Return of Lafont and Ward’s Musical Revue, and our newest musical drama, Camp res and Trails: the Captain Jack Crawford Story.”

Every summer season since Barkerville was rst declared a provincial heritage site more than 50 years ago, a passionate troupe of actors, singers, dancers and musicians assemble in the historic town to re‐create the joy and creativity of the original Theatre Royal, which was built in 1868 to provide much-needed respite to generations of Cariboo miners, businesspeople generations of Cariboo miners and families throughout the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

“Barkerville has always been fortunate to attract creative and talented people from all over the world who come together each season to help us celebrate the opening of the Theatre Royal,” Barkerville’s manager of Visitor Experiences James Douglas said.

“The Barkerville Heritage Trust is proud to support this tradition and we are thankful to those members of our local and provincial governments, businesses, and the community at large who support us year after year.”

Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk vio-lated spending rules as a university board member in 2010-12 and he should not be allowed to contin-ue as the cabinet minister responsible for enforcing those rules, NDP leader John Horgan said Wednes-day.

Horgan was commenting on the findings of an in-vestigation into the hiring

of two senior executives of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Virk should resign from cabinet or be fired by Premier Christy Clark, Horgan said.

The review found that extra “consulting fees” of $50,000 paid to Kwantlen president Alan Davis and former vice-president Anne Lavack were not reported as part of their compensation, and were

paid separately to get around compensation lim-its when they were being hired.

Horgan said Virk, an RCMP inspector in Lang-ley before running in the 2013 B.C. election, knows he broke the rules.

Virk spoke to reporters Tuesday when the report from assistant deputy minister Rob Mingay was released.

He called it “a humbling moment” and said that he was not properly informed on the financial reporting rules for hiring university executives at the time.

Virk vowed to make sure current directors of public institutions are properly trained.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong ordered the re-view after the extra pay-ments were raised in the

B.C. legislature by NDP advanced education critic David Eby.

The results are “trou-bling,” de Jong said when the report was released.

The government’s Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC) set salary ranges for Levack’s position at $125,000 to $175,000. When Levack was hired in 2011, she received the maximum salary, plus a

$20,000-a-year research allowance and a $50,000 “consulting fee” before starting work that was not reported to PSEC.

In the case of Davis, a Kwantlen official’s 2011 email that was copied to Virk inquires about pay-ing the new president an extra $100,000 above PSEC guidelines, from the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation.

Minister should resign over Kwantlen payments: NDPBCNEWS

Why You Need Power Of Attorney

Do you have arrangements in place for someone to handle your financial affairs if you become sick or incapacitated? Have you left clear instructions regarding the type of medical care you want if you can’t make your wishes known?

These two important areas of financial and personal planning shouldn’t be overlooked. While they may seem trivial when you’re healthy, an illness or accident can put your financial and personal life in a state of disarray.

Power of attorney is your best defence. Power of attorney is a legal document that allows a person or institution you choose to manage your affairs when you can’t. (In Quebec, this is known as a “mandate.”)

Power of attorney for property allows someone to manage your financial affairs. This can include anything from banking and expenses to looking after investments. You can appoint your spouse, a family member, a trusted friend, legal representative or a financial institution such as a trust company. You can assign general power for all your financial affairs, or restricted power of attorney giving responsibility for a narrow range of your finances-for example, investments only.

Power of attorney for personal care gives someone the right to make medical decisions on your behalf. (Depending on where in Canada you live, this may also be known as a “health care directive” or “living will.”)

When you’re incapacitated by illness or injury you won’t be able to direct your own care-particularly when near death. This could result in treatment you don’t want, such as being kept on life support with no possibility of recovery. A power of attorney for personal care will make your wishes known and assign somebody the legal right to ensure they are carried out. For example, you can specify the degree of medical intervention you will allow, steps to be taken to relieve pain and suffering, or your choice of a nursing home. This type of power of attorney also relieves family members of the pressure of making decisions on medical treatment and prolongation of your life.

It’s not difficult to set up power of attorney. Your lawyer can prepare the necessary documents for you. But before you take that step, think about the instructions to be included and to whom powers of attorney will be assigned.

For finances, make sure the person you appoint has the capability, time and desire to manage your financial affairs. If those affairs are complex, a financial institution may be the best choice.

For personal care, consider your spouse or other close family member. This should be someone who knows you and your wishes well. Discuss your instructions and desires with your potential representative. It’s also a good idea to speak to your doctor about what you should include in your power of attorney for personal care.

You should also specify under which circumstances power of attorney will take effect. For example you can specify that one or more doctors must declare that you are no longer able to physically or mentally manage your financial or personal affairs.

If you don’t have powers of attorney for property and personal affairs, speak to your lawyer and financial advisor right away. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

The federal Conservative government has approved Enbridge’s Northern Gate-way oil pipeline project, despite widespread opposi-tion in B.C. that includes the provincial government, First Nations, environmental or-ganizations and residents of the intended oil tanker port of Kitimat.

Natural Resources Minis-ter Greg Rickford signalled the government’s approval in a low-key statement Tues-day that endorsed the 209 conditions imposed by a fed-eral review.

Rickford noted that the proponent still needs to con-sult with aboriginal commu-nities and secure provincial permits.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has emphasized it is in the national interest to open a new pipeline route to the Pacific Ocean to carry Alberta oil sands bitumen and break the Canadian oil industry’s dependence on U.S. markets.

But a continuing battle over the pipeline plan is expected in the courts, and potentially on the land, where civil dis-obedience has already been threatened.

Opposition demands to re-ject the project dominated question period in the House of Commons Tuesday.

NDP leader Thomas Mul-

cair called the review panel process “a sham,” and Skee-na-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen warned that opposition in B.C. may up-set plans to develop liquefied natural gas exports in the province.

The project doesn’t yet meet Premier Christy Clark’s five conditions for new heavy oil pipelines, which in-clude world leading marine and land spill protections, resolution of aboriginal con-cerns and a fair share of ben-efits for B.C.

B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak said the deci-sion means the project meets the first of five conditions required by the province, a successful federal review.

“We recognize the benefits that the Northern Gateway project may bring, but they will not be at the expense of our environment,” Polak said.

The decision by the Harper cabinet follows last Decem-ber’s ruling by a federal re-view panel that the $6.8-bil-lion project should proceed, subject to 209 conditions.

That followed Enbridge’s earlier pledges to improve the project’s safety with thicker steel and other mea-sures along the 1,177-kilo-metre route.

The twin pipelines would carry 525,000 barrels per day of diluted bitumen from the oil sands west to Kitimat and send condensate to act

as a thinning agent east to Alberta.

Opponents gear up to battle northern

oil pipeline

From Kitimat to Victoria, opponents are preparing to fight the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, after it was given federal ap-proval Tuesday.

A group of B.C. aboriginal communities issued a state-ment Tuesday vowing to go to court to protect their ab-original title and rights on the land affected by the twin pipeline and tanker port for diluted bitumen on Douglas Channel.

Aboriginal opponents in the North Coast region in-clude the Haida, Gitgaat, Heiltsuk and Haisla First Nations, as well as commu-nities in the B.C. Interior.

Haisla Chief Councillor El-lis Ross, whose community is at the end of Douglas Chan-nel and who is involved in a natural gas export project, said it is too late for more consultations.

“Every mistake they’ve made we actually pointed out to them and said ‘this is not following our case law principles, you’re making a mistake’,” Ross said Tues-day. “But they went ahead and did it. It is going to be court.”

Northern Gateway proj-

ect leader Janet Holder said she will continue to work to build on the 26 equity agreements the company has reached with aboriginal communities along the pro-posed pipeline route.

Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan said her coun-cil has made its opposition clear, after an April commu-nity vote that came down opposed to the project.

“I think most of the coun-cillors are of the opinion that they really don’t want to see bitumen going down the channel,” Monaghan said. “They would rather have it refined and have a product that’s refined going down the channel.”

B.C. NDP leader John Hor-gan said he wants resource development that creates jobs in B.C., particularly for aboriginal communities. Horgan said the B.C. Liberal government gave up its op-portunity to oppose North-ern Gateway.

B.C. Environment Minis-ter Mary Polak rejected that claim, saying the province gave a clear “no” in its final submission to the federal re-view panel.

Discussions with Alberta, Enbridge and oil producers continue to see if B.C.’s con-ditions for land and ocean protection as well as a “fair share” of benefits for B.C. can be met, Polak said.

Waitinggame

“Life is about timing.”– Carl Lewis

They say the key to good comedy is timing. The same could be said of

labour action. The B.C. teachers strike, which

began in full this week, is an example of questionable timing. It appears to be a gamble, which

may not pay off.The strike is taking place at a

time when students are normally preparing for final exams. This is a time when some children have the most need of a teacher’s help.Classes designed around

reviewing the year’s curriculum will be lost and while the government has assured that exams will go on, you have to wonder if the students are properly prepared to take those tests. If the teachers were hoping that

a mid-June strike would provide the needed pressure to bring a quick end to the dispute, they appear to be mistaken. On Monday, talks collapsed

between the two parties and the strike is on.Now comes the waiting game. With negotiations stalled and

the school year winding down, the pressure to sign a new deal will soon evaporate. If the strike continues into July,

why would either side feel the need to make concessions? What will result is two long

months of speeches, saber-rattling and rhetoric as both sides claim to be fighting for a just cause.Worse is the fact that parents,

and the general public, will begin to lose interest as normal summer vacation activities begin.

–Black Press

Years before I was a mother, my husband and I babysat our young niece and nephew for the weekend. We were living in Vancouver and wanted to show them a good time so we took them to restaurants for meals, ice cream parlours for desserts and costly tourist attractions for entertainment. We also took them to the arcade and the movies.

After two days of running around town, emptying my pocketbook and trying to keep up with the two Energizer bunnies, I felt exhausted and wondered if I would ever be ready to be a parent. And then I heard two words I felt confirmed the answer was no: “I’m bored,” the older one sighed loudly.

I was shocked as I heard the younger one agree: “Me too.”

I couldn’t believe it. We’d been having a blast and I couldn’t imagine what more we could have done to entertain these youngsters.

“Only boring people get bored,” I responded.

I don’t think they understood what I meant by that, but it was something my mom said to me when I was a kid and it always stuck.

It seemed to work on them as well. At least temporarily. Our next activity was blowing bubbles, and though it was far less expensive and much simpler than anything else we’d done, the kids seemed to have the most fun with it.

The next day, after they’d gone home, I told my friend about the experience and my concern that I’d never have enough energy to be a mother. She laughed and said it’s different when the kids are your own. She was right.

 I have two children now.

Sam and Daisy are turning 14 and 11 this summer, and while I’ve treated them to things like I did with my nephew and niece, the bulk of their entertainment is left up to them, just like it was left up to me when I was a kid.

With school breaking for the summer, it’s a good time to remind myself of that. I want to hang out and make memories with them, but they have a lot more vacation time than I do.

And if they run out of ideas of things to do, a reminder of inexpensive activities could be helpful to them, so I made a list and attached it to the fridge. Part of it I got from suggestions I found when I searched the internet, and part of it was from a brainstorming session with Sam and Daisy.

We had fun compiling the list and came up with some great ideas on what we could do together – with friends and family as well.

Most of my best memories as a kid weren’t from the pricey vacations,

but from simple pleasures that didn’t cost much at all. Playing games, riding bikes, running through sprinklers, throwing water balloons, skipping rope, tenting in the back yard – the possibilities seemed endless.

Solo pursuits were enjoyable as well. My kids tend to turn to electronics such as the computer, phone or television when they’re on their own, so we made a separate list of solitary activities that don’t involve technology, things that kids from the old days used to do.

While Sam and Daisy can easily amuse themselves with the digital world, I want them to appreciate the simple, pure fun of life that surrounds them. Just like I did in the olden days, so far back, the kids tease that I traveled by wagon.

Well, some us did travel by wagon I guess. The station wagon was one sweet ride.

Editor:When I have a serious

discussion with staff and I want my opinion to be heard, I use the words “what I know to be true” and I try to present the facts.

Today I will share what I know to be true about my experience as a B.C. teacher.

I know that to become a teacher in this province nine years ago, I had to earn a bachelor of education degree. To receive a spot in the program I had to have excellent grades in my first bachelor’s degree and I had to prove that I had done many hours of volunteer work

with kids. I had to have proof I was willing to work for free to help kids. I was actually happy with this aspect of the criteria.

I know that once hired as a certified teacher, I won a .2 contract.

This means I worked one day per week as a paid school employee. I worked three to four days a week creating individual programs for the learning disabled and special needs students.

I was recognized with pay for about 60 days in total that year and my income was probably similar to a person in a minimum wage join. I was

willing to do this because I looked forward and saw that eventually, I would have a more sustainable income.

I know that I am now going into my eighth year as a certified teacher and many of those years have been fulfilling contracts that did not suit my personal or professional goals.

I have often worked at two to three schools per year, sometimes three schools in one day, as this was the only way I could combine my wages into a reasonable family income. I have given up many of my lunch hours and recess for travel between

schools, meetings and parent conferences. My family don’t ask for my school phone number because honestly, they don’t know which school I work at anymore (they’ve lost track.)

I know in my heart, I still want to teach children. I want to be the safe place that children can land when home is broken. The world is changing so fast and I am willing to work hard to figure out how to make the best use of the time we have, to prepare youth for the challenges of tomorrow. However, I feel our public system is stretched too thin. It

promises an education for every child but often children cannot participate because they are two or more years below their peers and there is no assistance available. I, as a resource teacher, can offer no support to many of those teachers. I feel my heart breaking when students ask to work with me and I have say “sorry”, because I do not have enough time to do all that I know needs to be done. This what I know to be true.

ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

From the rst words in chapter one, Alone, a novel

by Lin Weich, paints a terrifying picture. A young girl is running from vicious bullies at her school and because of that ongoing torment, her family makes a decision that changes everything.

Already fed up with city life, the parents decide to construct a new life in a wilderness setting, hoping to give their two daughters a safer, better life. The ensuing hardships, challenges, rewards and joy they experience on a small homestead on the northern coast of B.C., creates positive and negative aspects to their new life.

Paralleling that family’s life-changing decisions are the equally dreadful choices being made by a young man who grew up on the same homestead now occupied by the Lindholm family, but lived his life, since his teen years, far, far away in Vancouver.

His was a dif cult life, made more dif cult by the choices he made.

Over the seven years the story covers, both plot threads move the characters closer and closer to catastrophe.

Alone is a riveting read where the reader becomes invested in the success or failure of the characters.

Unless you are okay with spoiling the story and chose to read the end before nishing the book, most readers wait for the climatic end. Not so for author Lin Weich.

“I usually know where the book ends up, then have to get the characters there,” she said.

Although Alone has two main story threads, Weich admits sometimes that’s just not enough, so she adds other twists and characters.

“I nd the story and character development fascinating,” she said.

“And the more I write the more I’m thrilled with the challenge.”

As with her two previous novels, Strength

of an Eagle and Half-Truths, Total Lies, Weich does her research into all aspects of the story. For Alone, she consulted with professionals regarding such details as the interior of a Beaver aircraft, the mind and behaviour of someone with an anxiety disorder (exactly what could be correctly expected), the world of gambling and the setting of the homestead.

She’s always appreciative of living in a small town where fellow residents are often more than willing to share their experiences and expertise on a whole lot of subjects. Research can sometimes be the person next to you in the library or City Hall.

Weich is also very grateful to the three people who took the time to read and critique her nished manuscript before it went to press.

“Each brought different skills to the process and I was satis ed they covered the areas with suggestions and recommendations,” she said.

“And I really appreciated their input.”

Alone, as with all her books, was an opportunity for Weich to grow as a writer and explore fascinating subjects outside her normal expertise.

What’s next for this emerging writer? She’s still contemplating that but says she has no shortage of story ideas.

Although her reading public has urged her to consider a sequel to any one of her books, Weich admitted she might but is also enticed by all the new material residing in her fertile mind.

From beginning to end, Alone took a year to complete and Weich said much of that time was the publishing process. After the book actually appears in print, Weich says she takes time to appreciate the book, put her marketing plan in place and consider her options for the next project.

Olive is a chubby happy

ginger cat that loves cuddles and does her best to rid the yard from mice. That is Olive today.

Olive was born blind and by the time she was surrendered to the Crooked Leg Ranch (CLR), she had been neglected and allowed to become obese. Being so large meant that she could not clean herself well so by the age of two, she was in terrible shape.

CLR volunteer, Christy Wheeler, fostered Olive while she was cleaned up and xed up. Within a few months, she was transferred to a facility for special needs animals in Vancouver and everyone had hopes for nding a wonder-ful forever home. During the routine inspection, they dis-covered that Olive had feline leukemia, a fatal and conta-gious disease. No one wanted to adopt poor Olive so within a month she was on her way

back north. Christy, upon hearing of Olive’s plight, offered to adopt her.

Now, three years later, Olive is thriving. She is still chubby but is more active and doing well. She climbs her

scratching post, plays with her older house mates and loves going outside in the summer. Showing that her senses of smell and hearing are very acute, she successfully hunted a mouse. And, she even likes having a bath!

At present, she is not on any medication and is expected to live 10 years or more. The regular shots regime includes the vaccine that protects cats from feline leukemia so if Olive had been well cared for in her early years, she might not have leukemia today. Regretfully for CLR, since the leu-

kemia is contagious, Christy can no longer foster other cats because younger cats are more susceptible to contracting the disease.

As Christy shared this story, it was obvious that her heart is huge and that Olive is very much a loved member of this family.

For the record

The correct dates for Legion Week activities are Open House, June 22, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Truckless Bottle Drive, Wednesday June 25, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Wrap-up Party at Legion Beach June 28, 3:30 – 8 p.m.

When we consider Jesus and the example He is

to us, we cannot help but be challenged to our very core. Challenged, not in an overwhelming way, but liberated in the knowledge that He is able, in and through us, to empower us to be more like Him – making the challenge possible.

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul says “I

pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to

which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints and His incomparably great power for us who believe.

That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated Him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and

dominion and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.”

That’s the key of pressing in to Jesus – that we would know Him, understand

the life to which He has called us and live in the knowledge that His power enables us.

Then we are liberated from a ‘gospel’ without power, freedom or reality.

Then we become those who really reflect Jesus – not in private faith, rather in a public display of His character.

Happy With Yourself

Let’s sing a song of glory, ‘cause it makes our hearts feel good,If we’d let the Lord control us, I know He truly would.

We’d be happy with our work, and also in our play,We’d get up rejoicing at the start of every day.

The Lord could do so much, if we’d give Him half a chance,He could brighten up our soul in the quickness of a glance.

Oh our God in Heaven, my Spirit’s really bright,The load upon my shoulders is oh so ever light.

I’m happy and contended and joyous just to live,With the guidance from above, for the little that we give.

He can control our Spirit and make us what we are,And guide us with his wisdom like the twinkle of a star.

Oh dear God in Heaven, I’m delighted just to be,Among the souls of the living, in this land so ever free.

I often sit and wonder as I talk to you above,About the problems here, and your everlasting love.

The thrill to know you’re there will put the mind at ease,And dear Lord above, I know you’ll try to please.

You take the time to listen and answer all our prayers,We should all be grateful for the knowledge from upstairs.

If we put our mind in motion and put our heart in trust,A daily prayer to God above, would surely be a must.

So let us pray together, and take an active part,At being ever happy from the inside of our heart.

Elaine Couldwell

Enough

When I was young I didn’t know enough,I didn’t know that I didn’t know enough,When I found out I didn’t know enough,

I didn’t know enough to care that I didn’t know enough,Life was good enough.

When I stumbled into middle age I didn’t know enough,I had absorbed a lot of stuff , but it was still not enough,

I was learning a lot of new stuff , but not enough,I found there is so much stuff I could never know enough,

Life was still good enough.

Suddenly I was old and realized I had always know enough,When you can feed cloth and shelter yourself, that is enough,

The rest is good stuff , but it’s fl uff to the main enough,Those that are capable of feeding,

clothing and sheltering themselves and choose not to, are not good enough,

Life always was and still is good enough. So enough of enough,

Already.

R. Ray

I am blessed

Life is fairto that I contest. Some are dealt such hardshipwhile others, so blessed.

There is so much sadness;too much death.Hunger and sickness;poverty and stress.

Some handle their fateoblivious to grief;while others give inand fold with defeat.

It’s hardly humane, what some must endure;especially the young ones,so innocent, so pure.

I have been fortunateand truly blessed;misfortune and griefhave steered clear I confess.

I have witnessed such griefsuff ering and sorrow;and have learned that we mustalways look to tomorrow.

I am humble and weak, having not had to suff er;for strength lies with thosewho have succumb to the other.

I look up to them, although it won’t show.Their strength is a blessingsomething they should know.

In the end what I’ve learnedwithout sounding mundane;we are all tested at some pointand challenged with pain

How we come through it allIs the reward we are given. We’re natural born fi ghterswe don’t quit ‘till we’re winning.

So when you are challengedor see others as such;just keep your head held highand your spirits up.

Remembering Starla!

Safety Tip:As schools begin their summer break, there will be more children around the roads. Road safety is not always top of mind for kids, so make sure you pay extra attention, especially around

playgrounds where speed limits remain in effect year-round.

Question of the WeekFour-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel got behind the wheel of a kart when he was just three-and-a-half years old and was racing at age eight. Should we encourage teens to follow that example, as a way of learning about vehicle speed and control before getting their first license at 16?

Hot laps with F1 World Champ Sebastian VettelBOWMANVILLE, Ontario. Four-time Formula One world champion Se-bastian Vettel has been driving since 1991 – 20 years less than yours truly. The Infiniti-Red Bull Racing Team lead man was only three-and-half years old when he took the wheel on a kart in his native Germany. He began racing four years later at the ripe old age of eight. He has a few years under his safety harness but he’s always up to learn from his elders.Last year, the 26-year-old wunderkind showed off his driving skills to me and buddy Brian Makse – a man also with racing pedigree – in an Infiniti FX50 Vettel Edition FX on the Paul Ricard Circuit in the south of France. We both figured his cornering needed work. Seb’s seat time with us clearly paid off as thereafter he won his fourth straight F1 championship. It came as no surprise then that he would jump at the opportunity to take the wheel again alongside me. Brian wasn’t available but I headed here to the Canadian Tire Motorsport in Ontar-io to work the magic again. The affable young guy has had a tough start to the F1 season, battling with the new hybrid technology.I put in some time first with retired F1 driver and now ace BBC TV F1

commentator David Coulthard on an auto cross track, laid out in the shape of the Infiniti logo. As I finished my turn at the wheel of the Infiniti Q50, the Scot sent me off to Seb with the words: “No cones were hurt in this filming . . . ”I’ll take that as a compliment for my error-free drive.Buckled up in anoth-er Q50S ($47,450), I wondered if Seb would demonstrate an improved cornering technique as we did a hot lap together around the reputedly fast 3.95-kilometre track. He

greeted me warmly, I thanked him for a hat he had kindly autographed, which I recently auctioned off. He was pleased to hear it had raised hundreds of dol-lars to help send local leukemia-strick-en teen Ryan Fagnan and his family on a last vacation, shortly before he died. We roared out of the pit lane through the first turn and continued to accel-erate downhill – close to 170 km/h – towards the second turn. Locals told me the stretch to the turn features a number of camber changes down to the second turn, scene of most of the track’s fatal crashes. Gulp.Obviously, nobody had cautioned him as he whipped the family sedan effortlessly round, talking about how he relaxed as we drove. Movies with happy endings apparently. Ah, the same conclusions he likes to F1 races.

“There haven’t been too many of those lately,” he joked, pressing harder on the metal, perhaps to make a point. As Infiniti Director of Performance, Vettel is truly playing a role in the development of future road products, rather than merely offering his name as a celebrity endorsement. He talked enthusiastically about the new com-pact, performance-oriented Q30, which should see the light late next year in Europe and a little later in Canada. The 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 Q50S we were riding in also benefitted from a little of his input. He’s clearly looking forward to Infiniti giving the go-ahead to the Q50 Eau Rouge concept, which features the Nissan GT-R’s growling 560-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Another corner loomed and I leaned into the door, as he barely slowed from the rapid pace we had zipped along the straight. “Your cornering has improved since last year,” I offered cheekily.

“Thank you, I think I’ve got the apexes about right,” he grinned. Hours earlier, it’s doubtful he had even heard of the tricky track, nevermind driven it. Harkening back to his references to happy endings, I reminded him that after driving with me last year he had enjoyed nothing but success.“That’s right . . . it’s all down to you,” he said with what I believed was a thoroughly genuine smile of appreci-ation.The end was nigh. Time flies when you are having fun: our hot lap and friendly chat took less than four minutes.Last Sunday, he enjoyed only his second podium finish of the year taking third place at the Montreal Grand Prix. You’re welcome, Seb. Same time next year, in the Eau Rouge?

You can feel your voice get deeper when you climb aboard this big guy.The 2014 Chevy Silverado HD I tested recently featured a 6.6-litre Duramax Turbo V8 diesel engine, mated to an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission, capable of putting out 397 horses and provides 765 lb ft of torque. It gets deeper. This guy can carry up to 1706 kg and tow up to 8119 kg. And the truck box has load-bearing upper hooks are rated to hold 113 kg each.InteriorThe interior is very well or-ganized, comfortable leather 12-way front bucket seats

that are heated and cooled. The rear seats are a 60/40 split. Heavy use of dark wood burl is very prominent and gives the truck a different level of sophistication. The navigation screen is positioned perfectly and is easy to program without distracting you from the road. Steering wheel controls help with all radio functions and incoming phone calls. The dash could have been better, lots of plastic and not that appealing. SafetyThere is a single stage driver and front passenger airbag. An OnStar protection service is available, and offers direct communications between emergency services and the vehicle. An electronic immobilizer is standard equipment and prevents the vehicle from being started without the key. Forward collision alert, lane departure warning and safety alert driver seat are all standard.RoadworthyThe steering is very direct and responsive and makes driv-ing a large truck very easy. There is no fighting the steering wheel which can be a problem with other trucks in this category. The cab is very quiet and you can barely hear any road or tire noise. The diesel engine is a little noisy but not a big concern. The EZ lift tailgate is a nice feature, espe-cially opening with one hand, gone are the days when the tailgate just drops and almost takes out your hips.Towing CapabilityThis vehicle can tow up 8,119 kg and combined with the improved trailer sway control makes towing enjoyable. The stabilitrak control system can sense if your trailer is swaying and help control it by combining the power of the

engine and the braking system to keep the trailer under control. The rearview camera is a nice touch helping to align the trailer during hookup. Hill start assist is a good feature and helps prevent you from rolling back on a hill by maintaining brake pressure until the engine delivers enough torque to move the truck up the hill.Fuel economy15.8/10.2 L/100 km (city/highway)VerdictNot too long ago driving a heavy duty truck with a diesel engine meant you were in for a bumpy ride, not to mention the noise and smell of diesel fuel. Not now. Fast forward to today and the ride is smooth, the noise is greatly reduced and you can hardly smell the fuel. These trucks still work hard as ever, but are also used as mobile offices, meeting rooms, and for family outings. Price as tested $65,[email protected]

2014 Chevy Silverado HD.

You need not be a Formula 1 fan to enjoy this comput-er-generated film about the Red Bull Ring, the location for this coming weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.It features the man from today’s Driveway cover story – four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel and Infiniti-Red Bull Racing’s young gun Daniel Ricciardo racing around the track. Driving RB10s, Daniel and Sebastian explain the track's unique characteristics as they dual around the 4.3 km circuit. As the Red Bull racers contend with changing weather conditions, they explain the circuit's elevation changes, the four best overtaking opportunities, the track's nine corners and the four high-speed stretches. In certain sections of the circuit, Sebastian's RB10 becomes transparent, showing the intricate inner details of his 2014 racecar.http://bit.ly/[email protected]
