How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Question 2

RaceThe main male character in our film is portrayed as being dangerous and scary. His ethnic background is African Caribbean.

One of the other main characters is a female, who is illustrated as being innocent and getting herself into a dangerous situation. Her ethnic background is White British.

We thought it would be a good idea to use various genres within our film, we did this because our film is based on a true story in the UK. Within the UK there are many different ethnic backgrounds which create its diverse atmosphere.

Gender The dominant character in the film is a male, we chose to do this because predominantly males are seen as being masculine. Due to our film being a thriller we thought by conveying the message of the male having power over the female we could relate it to everyday situations which may occur in the audiences life.

The weaker more venerable character is a female, we chose to use a young female because this would convey the message that the female is in danger to the audience.

AgeOur age for our target audience is from around 16 to young adults. We chose this age because our film is about the consequences of using social media in the wrong way.

Our male actor is presented as older than the female victim, he is supposedly 22 and she is 16. We chose these ages as they’re the same age as our target audience, we thought this would be good because then the audience can relate to the situation and this will make the situation more hard hitting.

Mise-en-sceneOur film is based at a train station, we chose a train station because this reflected London’s urban feel. This would also be a typical place for young adults to meet. We didn't’t use any props within our film as we wanted to make it as realistic as possible.

Costumes were very casual, however we decided to dress the characters in dark colors. We did this because black, grey and navy connote danger, this foreshadows what is yet to come in the film. By the male character wearing a hood in some sections of the film it presents the idea that he is up to something and wants to hide his face. He is also wearing a rucksack, this makes the audience question what may be in the rucksack, and builds suspense.

Mise-en-sceneBy Sophia (main female character) creating a shocked facial expression, the audience is able to see everything isn’t what it seems. She is on edge and starts panicking, we enhance this by adding a heartbeat sound effect underneath.

The lighting is gloomy which creates an uneasy atmosphere and portrays the genre of the film.
