  • 1. 3. What have you learnt fromyour audience feedback?

2. To get audience feedback, we undertook a focusgroup, for this we had 9 people watching our trailerand getting feedback off of them, to get feedbackwe used a questionnaire which consisted of openand closed questions and also held and opendiscussion throughout stages of it. This type ofaudience feedback was very useful after finishingour film promotional package because all people inour focus group were in our target audience. Thishelped as they could identify mistakes or anypossible improvements which would be make theproduct more effective once complete. Thisfeedback gave us as a group an idea of weather ourfilm promotional package was successful andweather the audience understood the film trailer. 3. Focus Group 4. We were informed from the trailer that the audiencemainly thought that the protagonist was the father in thisfilm trailer, this was exactly what we was hoping for as wetried to make the father seem guilty through the use of ared herring. Nobody presumed that the protagonist wasEmily, but Emily was the protagonist in our trailer, so thiswas a success, one of the people from the focus groupquoted on their questionnaire that Emily was innocentcompared to the sinister nature of the villain.During the open discussion, everyone said that theywould go and watch the full film just from watching thetrailer, this shows the success of our trailer as everyone inour target audience claimed that they would go andwatch the film if a full version was released in the cinema. 5. Film Trailer QuestionnaireTo get more feedback about the trailer, we decided to create aquestionnaire with questions all based on the film trailer. We asked them to fill out the questionnaire directlyafter watching the film trailer. As we had already establishedthat their age fits into the target audience, we didnt ask fortheir age, as we wanted a mixed opinion of all ages in ourtarget audience. On the questionnaire which we had given out, we asked thefocus group if they would make any changes to our trailer andif so, to add comments of different shots which they believedwould fit in with the trailer and improve it, we were informedby a 2 people that they believed there wasnt much of a senseof location, therefore we added an establishing shot of theoutside of the house at the start of the trailer, we believedthis would create more of a sense of location. 6. Film Trailer QuestionnaireFor the first question, we asked "Which gender do you think this film isaimed at?" The majority of people believed that the film was targeted atmixed genders, this was evident by the 7/9 people who said this, 1 personsaid that it was predominantly targeted to a male audience and 1 personsaid that it was predominantly aimed to a female audience. This showsthat our film trailer was a success for this as the majority of the targetaudience said that it was aimed at mixed genders, this shows that theyunderstood the film trailer. I think the use of both of the main charactersbeing different genders, potentially gives the film a wider range of atarget audience as both genders can be appealed to the film. For the second question, we asked "What do you think the targetaudience for this film trailer is". 100% of people we asked respondedsaying that they thought the target audience was between 15-25, theywere all correct and established that they were the target audience, thisalso shows that they believe it attracts to them, and that maybe theycould relate to other people in the target audience which would enjoy thisfilm, this is a positive thing as they have shown that they believe mostpeople in their age category would understand and go and watch the fullfilm. 7. Film Trailer QuestionnaireFor the third question we asked "What genre do you believe this filmtrailer is?" 5/9 people said that they thought the genre was horror dueto the element of "panic and danger" which was associated with a lotof the shots. A reaction was that "the short clips, shrill noises andconstant theme of fear" makes it sound like a horror film. On the otherhand 4/9 people associated the trailer as a psychological thriller. Oneof these 4 said "The trailer suggests mind games and a situation whereone hides is psychological". The genre which we were hoping to comeacross was that it was a psychological thriller, but this could be apositive thing because now we could be targeting a wider range of anaudience if it is associated as a horror film or psychological thriller film, therefore more people may want to go watch the full version of thefilm. These results do show that we stuck to the codes andconventions of a psychological thriller, but maybe the audience werefeeling fear rather than thinking about the mystery behind who thekiller was. 8. Film Trailer QuestionnaireFor the fourth question, we asked "What were the 3 most memorableshots from the trailer?" From this, there were several shots which stoodout to the focus group, the shot of Emily hiding as 4/9 people found it tobe the most memorable shot, we felt this was an important as we wantedthe element of the game "hide and seek" to attract the audience as itplays a great amount of significance in the plot to the film. Another theshadow figure which was moving towards the camera, as 3/9 peopleassociated this shot as the most memorable due to "the element ofmystery to who/what the shadow is". Another popular answer was theshot of the shadow figure which was moving towards the camera, as 3/9people associated this shot as the most memorable due to "the elementof mystery to who/what the shadow is". The shot of Emily being trappedin the house and banging on the door as 3/9 people associated this as themost memorable shot, this is a positive thing from our prospective as ouraim was to hide the protagonist and to make her seem innocent by usinga red herring. Evidence of her being hid as the protagonist is suggested asone of the responses for the hiding shot was that "the secrecy added tothe panic and fear", and another response from the shot of Emily beingtrapped was "that there was no escape for her" and there was "fear anddesperation being associated with Emily being trapped". 9. Film Trailer QuestionnaireDuring the process of creating our trailer, our aim was to hide the villain, and to makethe villain seem innocent as a victim rather than a killer. To find out if we successfullyhad hidden the protagonist, we asked "Who do you think the protagonist/villain wasand why?" The most popular answer for this question was that 4/9 people believedthat the protagonist was the father and the most important response was that nobodyidentified Emily as being the protagonist. This is a positive thing as we tried tomake Emily seem too innocent to hurt anyone, we wanted Emily to look the victim toher father by the use of a red herring. This obviously worked as one response was that"Emily seems innocent compared to the sinister nature of the father". This proves thatthe goals which we set to represent our characters were successful.Creating the soundtrack was a very hard process, as sounds/ music for a psychologicalthriller were hard to find and not many of them would work with our trailer. For thesixth question, we asked "Do you think the soundtrack compliments the trailer?" 100%of people in the focus group said that the soundtrack complimented the trailer andcreates a sense of "fear", "panic" and "suspense". One person stated that "there was asense of danger and panic which is fitting with the images within". We were alsoinformed by one person in an additional comment that although the soundtrackcomplimented the trailer, they believed that there wasnt a lot of consistency of the"booms" throughout the trailer. We understood their comment and created a secondversion of our film trailer and added sound to the background where we thought itwould be appropriate, this worked so therefore we placed it on the background of thefinished product of the trailer. 10. Film Trailer QuestionnaireAs we disguised the villain to the plot with a red herring, we wanted toknow what spin the audience believed the plot would take, so wedecided to ask the focus group on the questionnaire "What would youpredict the story of the film to be based on evidence given in thetrailer?". From this 4/9 people identified that the plot to this trailer issurrounding a game of hide and seek between the brother and sister, this is important as we wanted the game to appear as important to theplot, the majority of the focus group realized this. Nobody in the focusgroup identified the protagonist as Emily due to the red herring, but2/9 believed that the protagonist was the father and that he hadsomething to do with the murders. This is exactly what we werehoping the focus group would respond with, as we wanted the plot toseem a mystery to the audience. 11. Overview of the Film TrailerQuestionnaireAs an overview question we decided to ask "Wouldyou go and watch it in the cinema?". 8/9 peoplesaid that they would go and watch this film in thecinema, this is positive as the age range of thisfocus group was 16-25 which matches our targetaudience. Therefore on average, we can come tothe estimation that 89% of people in our targetaudience would go and watch this in the cinema, therefore I have come to the conclusion that thepresentation of our product was a success. 12. Film PosterDuring the focus group, we carried out an open discussion for feedback on thesuccess of our film posters. From the focus group I got feedback from the colourscheme, 100% of the focus group believed that the colour scheme was effective onmy film poster and that the colour scheme does work and it was said to have lookedprofessional. The aim which I had for my film poster was to create mystery behindwho the killer was going to be, I did this by having the image of a females eye, Iattempted to make the female look innocent and be represented as a "victim"rather than a villain. They believed that the most memorable feature on my posteris the main image as she is being represented as the "victim" in my poster, and sheis "hiding and something has happened to her so she looks scared", and "as ifsomething is coming to get her due to the image of the hand". But another persondescribed the image to be presenting Emily as the protagonist due to the expressionof the eye showing that "she cant believe what she has done and looks as if she mayhave killed someone". Therefore it created a code of enigma, which is exactly what Iwanted as the killer is being disguised, but due to the expression, there is also achance that it could be her, this successfully made connections to the film. Overall100% of the focus group said that they would also go and find the trailer online ifthey had just seen this poster being advertised, therefore I would deem the productof my film poster to be a success as it advertised the film trailer well. 13. Film Magazine QuestionnaireBefore creating my film magazine, I wanted to know whatmy target audience would want on the cover of my filmmagazine. To do this I handed out a questionnaire toeveryone in the focus group to fill out.I created a questionnaire based on the ideas for a filmmagazine and have handed it out to nine members of myfocus group to ask what they would like and would theythink would make a good film magazine. I am going toconsider their responses whilst creating my magazinefront cover as I will have an idea of what my targetaudience want to see/read. 14. Film Magazine QuestionnaireThe first question I asked on my questionnaire was What age groupare you in . I had six responses saying that they were aged between18-21, two responses saying they were aged between 16-17, noresponses from anyone aged 11-15 or 27+ and one aged 22-26, thissuggested to me that I would be aiming my magazine at young adultsbetween the age range of 16-26, just like my film trailer. The second question which I asked on my questionnaire was Whichgender are you?, I asked this question to make sure I realised whatthe males wanted on a magazine and what the females want on amagazine, but from the results of the questionnaire, it seems theyhave very similar opinions. I had six responses from males and threeresponses saying that they were female. 15. Film Magazine QuestionnaireThe third question which I asked on my questionnaire was Which ofthe following articles would you be more interested in reading? (ticktwo) I had 5 responses saying that they would be interested inReading film reviews, I had three responses for actor interviews andtickets to an opening premiere. I had two responses for the latest filmsreleased and behind the scenes shots/interviews and one response fora look at the latest award winning films. The fourth question which I asked on my questionnaire was Whichtitle for the magazine (masthead) do you prefer? I had mixedresponses from this question, mainly from only two options, Motionhad four responses and Spotlight had three responses, some of thepeople attending the focus group also recommended some of theirown for me, for example Action and Spotlight. I will not consider whichmasthead I will use for my film magazine. Screen, Audition andbroadcast had no responses. 16. Film Magazine QuestionnaireThe fifth question which I asked on my questionnaire was Whichslogan do you prefer? I had a lot of responses for Lights, Camera..Action at six responses, getting behind the scenes had two responsesand the film guidebook had one response. Get all the latest film infohad no responses. The sixth question which I asked on my questionnaire was Whichcolours should the magazine be? (choose three) White and blackwere very popular responses having nine votes each, so everyonevoted white and black as 2/3 main colours to be used. Red had sixresponses and blue had two responses, one of the participants in thisquestionnaire also came up with an answer for me, they came up withthe colour yellow to be used, I will consider their responses oncecreating my film magazine. 17. Film Magazine QuestionnaireThe seventh question which I asked on my questionnaire was Wouldyou buy a film magazine? I had 7 responses saying yes that theywould buy a film magazine, and for those who said that they wouldntbuy the film magazine, I asked them why on the question, bothresponses stated that they wouldnt buy the magazine as it is onlybased on one subject and they prefer to read something which givesinformation about a variety of subjects. The eighth question which I asked on my questionnaire was Howmuch would you pay for a film magazine? I had mixed responsesfrom this question which I asked, a majority of options were chosen.two people said they would pay between 1.00-1.50 for a filmmagazine, three people said that they would pay between 1.50-2.00and 2.00-2.50 for a film magazine, one person said they would paybetween 2.50-3.00 and nobody said they would pay more than4.00 18. Film Magazine QuestionnaireThe ninth question which I asked on myquestionnaire was What would you prefer tosee on the front cover? The most popularresponse was that they wanted to see thecharacter which they re playing in a hit movie(for example Emily from my film), that had 7responses and there wasnt many people whowould prefer to see the actor themselves insmart attire as there was only 2 responses forthat option. 19. Overview of the Film MagazineQuestionnaireOverall this questionnaire has helped me come toimportant decisions which my magazine will have. I haveno got ideas on what my target audience like and dislike, Ihave took in their opinions and will consider them whilstmaking decisions for my film magazine, for example withthe masthead, over the next two days I will make adecision weather to use the masthead Motion orSpotlight. Every single question has helped me gatherinformation which is key to creating a successful filmmagazine. I am now going to look at more professionalmagazines and think of which codes and conventions Ican display in my own film magazine. 20. Overall view of audience feedbackOverall, the focus group allowed us to gatherfeedback from our target audience to improveupon the products within the film promotionalpackage in order to create a more professionaland successful product. The feedback whichI received was very helpful and will helpcontribute towards the improvements of myproducts as a whole.
