Page 2: Question 4

Colour scheme: The colour scheme I used consisted of the colours black, blue, white and red. I used my questionnaire to help me decide what colour scheme to use by asking the audience what were their favourite colours. Red and blue were the most popular answers followed by black and purple. I swapped the purple for white to make a consistent colour scheme that looked professional together. Therefore the colour scheme should attract the audience into buying this magazine.

Model: When picking someone to model for my magazine I tried to

pick someone who the target audience could relate to; therefore I

picked a 17 year old girl which appeals to girls and boys. She wears

heavy eyeliner, wears dark clothing and fits in with the colour

scheme of the magazine.

Cover lines: I also used my questionnaire results to decide what

artists would feature on my front cover. My questionnaire didn’t

succeed in picking a few favourite rock artists/bands so I decided to

use popular rock singers/bands that I knew were headlining for a

popular rock festival called ‘download’.

I added the strip at the bottom of the magazine which is popular

with professional music magazines because the audience can

then see what other bands are featured in the magazine as well

as making the magazine looking full of bands and artists that the

audience wants to read.

Photograph: I wanted a really eye catching photograph for my front cover however I decided simple was sometimes better after attempting to get the photograph I wanted. The model is outside as I initially wanted the cover line to say “Catherine Bunting opens up” which explains the location however many teenagers do hang

around the streets when their parents don’t allow them and their friends in one house which

means the audience can relate to this.

Cover lines: After looking at my questionnaire I decided to use most of the audiences favourite rock artists/bands as my cover lines. Some people had included artists/bands that were not in the genre of rock so I decided to also look at the next question on my questionnaire of what other rock artists/bands they liked. This meant I could create articles that the audience wanted to read as they went interested in the artists/bands which should attract everyone who answered my questionnaire as well as other rock fans.

Layout: I decided to use a simple layout for my contents page as I knew that I could include good quality photographs to make the contents page look more interesting therefore I could stick to a simple layout which was quick and easy to arrange. I also included coloured boxes behind text this meant I could incorporate some of the colour scheme onto the contents page quickly and easy and therefore should attract the audience.

Photographs: Photographs were really important for the production of my work, I wanted really good photographs to attract the audience therefore I went to a few gigs to get some live pictures as well as taking the images needed for the cover lines i.e. the main cover line on the front cover and the double page spread article. I aimed to get photographs that appealed to the target audience and attracted them to buy the magazine therefore I got some live pictures of some really talented local rock bands which means local rock fans should be able to recognise them as well as be interested in them.

Photographs: For my double page spread I also wanted fantastic images. I went to see Steve Swaby’s band live and managed to get some great photographs. I definitely wanted to include these photographs in my double page spread, so I used a simple layout and added the photographs to make the article much more appealing. This should attract the audience as the live photographs should convey the atmosphere at the gig and help them imagine what it is like to see Refrain live. Also the main photograph contains direct address which should interest the reader.

Colour scheme: Coincidentally all of the photographs I had chosen for my double page spread included red tones from various lights this meant that the colour scheme is still carried on from the front cover which should attract the audience.

Article: The intention when I wrote my article was to keep it short and sweet, I wanted to tell fans what Steve Swaby’splans were as well as introduce him to new fans and therefore attract the readers as a whole.
