QUESTION 5- HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?

Page 2: Question 5 how did you attract

The colours that were used in my magazine were bold and mostly consisted of pink which has deep connotations linked to things such as love. This colour was used as the audience is expected to be at the age of developing crushed and so can feel as if they can relate to this magazine.

The colour blue was also used on my front cover and contents page as well as the masthead as it related to the feeling of peace and tranquillity, and above all else, promoting both physical and mental relaxation. It shows that the magazine is an outlet for the reader to escape reality and a world full of glamorous artists, fashion and makeup.

The background throughout all 3 practical pieces was a simple white so that the supporting images and sell lines really catch the attention of the reader, and to suggest the dominance of the font.

MASTHEAD

The word ‘totally’ is in blue which connotes calmness as well as innocence which reflects the target audiences’ young age. It is also has a sparkling effect to show creativity and femininity which may appeal to the readers. The word ‘pop’ is in a very deep pink to stand out against the blue of the ‘totally’ and the white background.

I followed conventions of a stereotypical pop magazine by placing the masthead on the left had side of the front cover, but I placed it on the right hand side of the contents page. This is great because the audience is addressed in a way that is suitable for young females.

The language used in this magazine is very casual, it isn’t to formal and some words are slang so the readers attention could be draw in because of this.

Many images are used on the front cover and contents page such as pop artists, fashion boxes and even pictures of the audience. Pictures are used to make the audience feel important enough to buy this magazine. They are also used to make the product look less visually boring.

Direct address is also used (words such as “you” “your "or “you're”) making the audience feel they are being spoken to personally. Direct address is also achieved in the front cover by the artist making eye contact with the audience.M

The price of my magazine is written in a very small font compared to the rest of text, this is done so that the audience do not get put off buying the product just because of the price. It is placed at the top of the magazine just underneath the mast head so that people who are interested in buying the magazine know how much they need to get it, this way they do not have to go searching for a price tag as this may de- motivate them. The contents page is bold and attractive for the main audience because I have used a variety of different methods to attract the audience. For example, I have used multiple images and I changed font colours to make the page look less visually boring. However, I have made sure that made font stays the same to continue brand identity. I have also used appealing stories such as rumours about boy bands and intriguing sell lines to draw my audience in. I have used the same type of font and colour scheme on my front cover so that the audience are clear that the contents page is from the same magazine as the front cover.

The double page spread is an important part of the magazine and so the layout must be aesthetically pleasing. There is so much information on the page and so it must be simple, yet bold. The article is something the girls can find entertainment from and escape reality by reading it. It is not visually boring as there are no blank spaces on the page, even the background is filled with hearts so that the audience can be attracted to it.

Blumer and Katz suggested the uses and gratifications model. This focused on 5 main points, Entertainment, Escapism, Information, Identity and Social interaction.

All three practical pieces include a sense of all these points in different ways, for example, the front cover has a main sell line about a rumour that has been trending and has a skyline about a quiz that relates directly to the audience (entertainment). There are also articles about rumours that may provide the reader with social interaction, they can talk about it with their friends and thus the magazine will gain in popularity. The contents page provides the audience with information such as the key to a long friendship and Halloween makeup tutorials. The double page spread provides the reader with escapism and also identity. This may be because the audience can relate with what the artist is saying.

Maslows hierarchy suggests that in life humans have an hierarchy of needs, which goes from physiological needs all the way up to self- actualisation. My magazine links to Maslows hierarchy, especially self esteem. This is very important for the magazine to have as the main target audience are teenage girls, who may be going trough a hard time, and so through this magazine she can feel as if she can learn how to grow her confidence and feel positive about herself. One of the sell- lines talk about confidence issues, from this the reader can relate the article to their own lives. Self- actualisation is also visible throughout the magazine, this is shown through fashion boxes and tutorials. It also shown from advice given, the reader can benefit herself from learning what needs to be done to improve her life.
