WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

When I was in the construction process of my magazine, I was really envisioning using lots of floodlights of different colours, mirrors and shots. I thought about using high angle shots for my magazine as well as midwaist, low angle and headshots.

To do this, I had to learn how to use a professional DSLR camera. As well as this, I learnt how to set up the photography studio for a session. This included:

• Best angles for the best shot • 3 point lighting – best positions and default positions • How to operate the lighting • How to focus and adjust the settings on the DSLR camera • How to get the most out of your session • How to upload the pictures to the pc

In addition to this, I used a lot of Adobe technology. Amongst the pack, I used Photoshop and InDesign the most. Because I started late in the course, I had to attend a catch-up seminar on how to use Photoshop, in design and other adobe technologies.Photoshop really helped me in terms of creating my preliminary as well as my final magazine covers. The colours available on Photoshop and the overall quality of the final results were absolutely stunning – the colours were so vivid, the resolution was perfect and it was just really nice to look at.InDesign really helped me in the creation of my contents pages and my double page spreads. I found the setup of InDesign easy to use, to scale the pages were fairly simple and the overall experience of using the software really paid off.

InDesign

I used Adobe InDesign™, originally, I was meant to do the contents as a single page spread, but I decided to do a double page spread with a rip out poster.

This made it look so much better. My page layout was portrait - and I used gutters to ensure I didn’t let the images/masthead bleed out.

DSLR CAMERA WORK

On November the 14th, Scott, (the head of the department), taught us all how to use professional DSLR cameras and the photography studio.

From this day, I learnt how to use 3 point lighting effectively, which really helped me in my photoshoot in terms of giving my coverstars a nice glow. I also learnt about the effects of the backdrop – and how the backdrop can affect or improve the quality of the pictures taken.

Scott additionally spoke to us about safety in the studio, rules and hazards. One of the hazards addressed was about the lights. Scott told us that the lights are extremely hot whilst on – to touch the bulbs would burn our fingers off and this is a danger to not only ourselves but the equipment as well.
